Forget Microsoft Surface: Tesla Delivers Mobile Computer With 4 Doors And 17-Inch Screen
http://www.forbes.com/sites/briancaulfield/2012/06/22/tesla-debuts-giant-tablet-computer-with-four-wheels-four-doors-and-17-inch-touch-screen/?partner=yahootix
"There’s a lot of jargon here, but the car will rely on the same ‘Tesla’ line of processors you’ll find in smartphones such as the HTC One X or tablets such as the ASUS Transformer Prime. In other words, this thing is basically a giant tablet computer with four wheels, four doors, and 600 pounds worth of batteries.“The Tegra VCM features the world’s first mobile superchip, which integrates a multicore ARM CPU, an ultra-low-power NVIDIA GeForce® GPU and dedicated audio, video and image processors.
One Tegra VCM will power the Model S infotainment system, which features a 17-inch touchscreen with a customizable and intuitive user interface for music, phone, navigation, connected services and climate control.
A second Tegra module will drive the all-digital instrument cluster, which features a high-resolution, 12.3-inch LCD display and advanced 3D graphics that can be personalized based on each driver’s preferences.”
When the highly anticipated Tesla Motors Model S electric sedan makes its debut Friday, so will the NVIDIA® Tegra® Visual Computing Module (VCM). Based on the same powerful Tegra processor used in smartphones and tablets, the Tegra VCM will power the vehicle's 17-inch touchscreen infotainment and navigation system -- the largest ever in a passenger car -- as well as its all-digital instrument cluster.
Tesla Motors is the first company to ship the Tegra VCM, enabling intuitive, interactive, high-resolution visuals inside its vehicles. For drivers, the system provides larger, more readable maps and a beautifully rendered instrument cluster that can be personalized from the multifunction steering wheel.
The Tegra VCM is a complete computing platform that delivers superb 3D graphics and multimedia capabilities as well as exceptional energy efficiency, a critical feature for all types of cars. The module provides automakers a highly cost-effective way to rapidly incorporate into vehicles the advanced technology customers are using in their consumer devices, but with a focus on safer operation by reducing the inherent driver distraction of handheld devices.
"To capture the interest of today's consumer, automakers must innovate well beyond the traditional transportation benefits of a car," said Thilo Koslowski, vice president and automotive practice leader at Gartner. "Automakers have to impress drivers with superior in-vehicle connectivity and interface experiences that leverage the best technology innovations available."

"Tesla has created a premium electric vehicle that is raising the bar on value, performance and efficiency while getting people excited about cars again," said J.B. Straubel, chief technology officer at Tesla Motors. "With the power of NVIDIA Tegra, we are able to deliver a visually stunning in-vehicle experience to our customers and put rich content at their fingertips."
"On the outside, Model S is a stunning blend of beauty, high performance and energy efficiency. On the inside, it's one of the most sophisticated consumer electronics devices ever built," said Dan Vivoli, senior vice president at NVIDIA. "Tesla Motors is at the forefront of innovative automakers that are delivering an enhanced driving experience based on NVIDIA's advanced processors."
Since forming its automotive business unit in 2004, NVIDIA has shipped processors in or won future designs in more than 20 brands of vehicles across 100-plus models. More information is available at www.nvidia.com/automotive.

Windows Phone 8 unveiled: Microsoft modernizes its mobile system
It's shaping up to be a huge week for Microsoft. On Monday, the company announced its Surface tablet platform at a hush-hush event in Los Angeles, and now Microsoft has unveiled Windows Phone 8 Apollo at its Windows Phone Summit in San Francisco.
Microsoft announced eight specific platform updates for its upcoming mobile OS. We've already covered one of the most consumer-facing updates, the new Start Screen, but other changes include hardware-related features like multi-core processor and memory card support, a revamped Internet Explorer 10, shared native code between Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, NFC support, a new Wallet hub, Nokia Maps, and Windows Phone 8 for business.
Many of these updates shouldn't come as a surprise, considering all the leaks and reports that came out in February. Nor was today's announcement a full-fledged reveal like Apple's iOS 6 presentation at WWDC. Microsoft says it will unveil more end-user features in the summer. But in the meantime, these platform updates are significant, and Microsoft had a lot to say about them.
Here's a deeper dive into what we can expect from Windows Phone 8.....

Good thought.
I watched the cnet live feed and blog. The guys who are there are now getting to actually see it up close, etc. Sure will be intereting to read the press over the next few days.
Yes, looks terrific.
"Well, one more mystery solved.
Microsoft has just told reporters just where in L.A. they are supposed to head for today’s event: Hollywood’s Milk Studios. That said, Redmond reminds folks that it’s an invite-only event — gate crashers will be forced to grab a star map and head out for la-la land.
To recap, there are a few things we know that Microsoft hasn’t said, namely that not only is it a tablet event, but Microsoft is doing its own tablet. The move could help Microsoft catch up to the iPad, but it also risks alienating Microsoft’s longtime PC partners.
That said, Microsoft has been chasing the tablet dream for more than a decade, so it’s understandable that it wants back in the game.
For more, check back here closer to the 3:30 pm PT start time for the event.
In the meantime, here’s one more Tegra-sized tidbit to keep you sated until then: Expect at least some of the devices shown off later Monday to be powered by Nvidia chips."

MINYANVILLE's take on who they should buy:
Four Hot Microsoft Rumors, and Fresh Info About Google's Latest Project
3. Microsoft doesn’t want to buy Nokia, but it will anyway.
Earlier this week, various tech outlets featured a story by The Register that stated that Microsoft had been considering a buyout of Nokia in late 2011, but promptly bailed upon learning the dire situation of the target’s finances. Added on to the disproved rumors from last Friday of a purchase by rival Samsung (SSU.SG), we might expect a good deal of uncertainty in Nokia’s future.
It now appears, however, that while Microsoft may have preferred to keep things casual, it has bought so much Nokia milk that it may be forced to buy the telecom cow as well. Considering all the Nokia technology wrapped up in Windows Phone 8, trouble for the Finnish firm could risk the viability of the device. To ensure the stability of its new mobile phone, Microsoft may find a buyout to be the safest option after all.

Microsoft to make 'major' announcement on Monday
Posted on June 14, 2012 Tweet Facebook LinkedIn Google Plus 0 Comments
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Microsoft is being secretive about a "major" announcement it plans to make in Los Angeles on Monday.
The company invited media to an afternoon event, but it says it won't divulge the location until that morning. In an email, the company says, "This will be a major Microsoft announcement — you will not want to miss it."
Microsoft declined further comment Thursday.
The venue suggests it has to do with the entertainment industry.
In recent months Microsoft Corp. has made more TV programming available on its Xbox 360 video game console. Netflix Inc. is among the offerings on the Xbox, and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is on Microsoft's board.
Microsoft is also preparing to release a new operating system, Windows 8, that works across laptop computers, tablets and even televisions.

Can This SUPER Alliance Be Intel’s Foil?
Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:TXN), Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD), and ARM (NASDAQ:ARMH) are leading an effort to overthrow Intel’s (NASDAQ:INTC) dominant position in the computing processor market and bring about a thematic change in the main product currently prevalent in the market.
The companies, along with MediaTek and Imagination Technologies, have created a nonprofit that will work on standardizing the architecture for low-power computer chips and multicore graphics processors. Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) have reportedly also been extended invites into the Heterogeneous Systems Architecture Foundation. The foundation is said to be already working with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE).
"OCZ is very pleased to be a part of this leading technology conference and to partner with Microsoft in the development of upcoming products, while helping to drive SSD compatibility, encouraging SSD adoption over hard drives, and bolstering additional relationships with the latest Microsoft solution providers," said Ryan Petersen, CEO for OCZ Technology. "This collaboration with Microsoft extends the benefits of our SSD technology to the Microsoft universe delivering superior application performance and data access for next-generation data centers."
"We're excited to see OCZ Technology Group build on Windows Server 2012 capabilities and demonstrate Talos 2 SSDs, at the Microsoft Partner Pavilion at Microsoft TechEd in Orlando, FL this week," said Ian Carlson, director of Windows Server and Management product management at Microsoft.

“Intel’s deployment of Mellanox InfiniBand silicon is a testament to the high performance and efficiency of our solutions,” said David Barzilai, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies. “Server and storage OEMs looking to roll out faster and more powerful systems will maximize their products’ potential with Mellanox InfiniBand solutions.”

Speaking of bloggers, this is rather robust:
http://beta.fool.com/shamapant/2012/06/08/perfect-growth-stock/5532/?ticker=MSFT&source=eogyholnk0000001
-- Fun Fact? OCZ Technology's expected revenue for this year is roughly equal to the total size of the SSD market in 2008.
--4 directors each buying 40,000 shares in April.
-- Indilinx controllers are outperforming the Sandforce controllers, and OCZ's movement into controller production gives it a vertical integration that is an inherent advantage in the battle for market share.
--OCZ is growing at insane speeds now (expecting 80% revenue growth this year)
--Right now, OCZ sells for less than last year's revenue. To give you some context for that, competitor Fusion-IO sells for 9x last year's revenue ...
--Last year, OCZ guided for 300-330M in revenue. OCZ ended the year with 360M in revenue. This year, management guided for 630-700M in revenue and the stock plummeted, clearly focusing on higher cash burn rather than huge scaling up of revenue. Again, however, we can expect OCZ to beat guidance as in their conference call, the CEO admitted that guidance did not include c?ontroller or SANRAD revenue because they were tougher to calculate. Admitting that controller revenue was growing at twice the rate of OCZ's core SSD business, the CEO is clearly understating OCZ's market potential.
Agreed. The "our sources" for The Register could be a bunch of bloggers somewhere. Would be nice, if true, to see an official PR.
.....The new "storage hardware" is thought to include solid state drives (SSDs) and these are, informed sources say, OCZ drives.
According to a Gigaom source, Azure's "all-SSD block storage infrastructure boosts performance and differentiates Azure from AWS, which offers solid state storage, but only with some higher-end services like DynamoDB."
OCZ CEO Ryan Petersen said in the latest OCZ earnings call that the company had recently won business from "a leading cloud and content delivery provider." This is now thought to be Azure.
Our sources close to OCZ tell us that the world's largest independent SSD company is supplying SSDs, possibly Z-Drive R4 drives with VXL caching software, to Microsoft for use by the Azure cloud. That would be a huge win for OCZ and elevate its credibility as an enterprise SSD supplier sky-high. ®

Vanguard Natural Resources to Acquire Natural Gas and Liquids Properties in the Arkoma Basin
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun. 4, 2012-- Vanguard Natural Resources, LLC (NYSE: VNR) (“Vanguard” or “the Company”) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire natural gas and liquids assets in the Woodford Shale and Fayetteville Shale of the Arkoma Basin for a purchase price of $445 million from Antero Resources. The effective date of the acquisition is April 1, 2012 and the Company anticipates closing this acquisition on or before June 29, 2012.
Scott W. Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “As we stated on our last conference call, we believe it’s a great time to purchase natural gas assets and we believe this transaction will prove to be an excellent addition to our portfolio. This acquisition is primarily natural gas with some associated liquids and has an existing hedge book that will allow us to achieve above market pricing for the next several years. With this acquisition, we have established a new operating area which we believe has potential for future growth through other acquisitions as well as development drilling as natural gas prices improve.”
Significant benefits expected from the acquisition:
•Immediately accretive to distributable cash flow;
•Proved reserves of approximately 420 Bcfe (58% proved developed and 82% natural gas);
•Reserve to production ratio of approximately 15 years;
•Current net production of approximately 76 MMcfe/d (91% natural gas) from 833 gross wells (134 producing wells to be operated by Vanguard in the Woodford Shale);
•Approximately 66,000 net acres in the Woodford Shale play and 5,300 net acres in the Fayetteville Shale play;
•Approximately 180 proved drilling locations with an average 22.5% working interest that are expected to generate superior returns even in a low gas price environment. We have also identified an additional 1,100 future proved drilling locations on acreage that is held by production that can be developed should natural gas prices return to the $4-$5 range; and
•Existing natural gas hedge book valued at approximately $100 million which at closing we intend to restructure to cover 100% of expected proved production through 2017 at prices significantly higher than current market.
The Company intends to fund this acquisition with borrowings under its existing reserve-based credit facility. Vanguard has requested that the banks perform an interim borrowing base redetermination to include the properties from this acquisition and anticipate an increase of approximately $300 million to the current borrowing base to take into account the additional value of the assets being acquired. Pro forma for the borrowing base increase, the Company expects to have liquidity in excess of $200 million after closing.

"Flame" computer virus strikes Middle East; Israel speculation continues
"....Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the "Flame" virus was unprecedented both in terms of its size and complexity, possessing the ability to turn infected computers into all-purpose spying machines that can even suck information out of nearby cell phones.
"This is on a completely different level," Kaspersky researcher Roel Schouwenberg said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "It can be used to spy on everything that a user is doing."
The announcement sent a ripple of excitement across the computer security sector. Flame is the third major cyberweapon discovered in the past two years, and Kaspersky's conclusion that it was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation that the virus could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage aimed at archrival Iran....."

"Nomura Securities on Semiconductors: Intel Plus NVIDIA Would Be A Scary Combination
May 29, 2012 8:16 AM EDT
Analyst, Romit Shah, said, "Semiconductor stocks could outperform in the second half of 2012, but we would be more aggressive on confirmation that bookings and backlog are holding up in June. Our sector view is Neutral. Top long ideas are Broadcom (Nasdaq: BRCM), Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA), and Avago (Nasdaq: AVGO). Top short ideas are Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL), and Altera (Nasdaq: ALTR)."
"We believe Nvidia would make a good strategic fit for Intel. On the surface, a merger between two companies that want to capture a larger share of the PC bill of materials and become larger in mobile seems an obvious thing to consider. However, we are not implying that any such combination will take place, as regulatory hurdles could be high and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang’s estimation of what Nvidia is worth may greatly exceed what Intel would be willing to pay."
"Most important, if Nvidia’s chips were manufactured internally at Intel, this could deliver a major blow to TSMC (and by definition Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM)), which relies heavily on Nvidia to amortize costs at the leading edge. Nvidia accounts for roughly 40% of 28nm wafers at TSMC. Considering premiums (50-100%) on recent acquisitions, Nvidia’s shares could fetch $18-$24 per share or a valuation of about $11-15bn, and still be modestly accretive."

Google did not infringe Oracle patents -
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/google-did-not-infringe-oracle-192323058.html
By Dan Levine
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc's Android mobile platform has not infringed Oracle Corp's patents, a California jury decided in a high-stakes trial fought by the two Silicon Valley giants over smartphone technology.
Because the same jury could not unanimously agree on the copyright allegations earlier in the case, the latest verdict on patents effectively puts an indefinite hold on Oracle's quest for damages.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday in a San Francisco federal court, and confirmed by a Google spokesman. An Oracle attorney declined to comment on the decision.
The jury found earlier that Oracle had proven copyright infringement for parts of Java. But the jury could not unanimously agree on whether Google could fairly use that material.

NVDA: Needham Sees Lift from MacBook GPU Slots
By Tiernan Ray
Needham & Co.’s Rajvindra Gill this afternoon reiterates an Overweight rating and a $20 price target on shares of Nvidia (NVDA), following a report this morning by TheVerge’s Nilay Patel saying forthcoming MacBook laptops from Apple (AAPL) will dump Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) graphics processing units (GPU) in favor of Nvidia’s.
Writes Gill, “If these reports are true, then NVDA would supply discrete GPUs into the 15” and 17” Macbook Pro models (see below), which currently use AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 6770M GPUs.”
Gill thinks that could be a measurable contribution to Nvidia’s roughly $4 billion a year in sales:
If we assume a 28% increase in CY13 MacBook Pro sales to 8.6MM units from an estimate of 6.7MM in CY12, and the 15” and 17” models account for 50-60% of Apple’s total yearly MacBook Pro shipments or 4.3MM-5.2MM; then at estimated discrete GPU ASPs of $25-$30 per unit, we could see NVDA generating $27MM-$39MM per quarter or $107-$155MM per year in incremental revenue. Our FY14 (CY13) Non-GAAP EPS would then increase by roughly $0.05-$0.10 to $1.25-$1.30 vs our published estimate of $1.20 based on 40% gross margin.
Nvidia shares are up 10 cents, or 0.8%, at $13.23.

NVIDIA today launched one of the most significant initiatives in the history of the company that, if delivered as promised, could propel them into a position as a top enterprise technology player.

NVIDIA chips to power graphics for upcoming MacBook Pros
Theflyonthewall.com (so, pretty much speculation only imo)
..Apple's (AAPL) next MacBook Pros will feature Nvidia (NVDA) graphics alongside Intel (INTC) Ivy Bridge processors, according to The Verge, which cited confirmation from Joanna Stern at ABC News and its own source, though the report did not identify which specific Nvidia chip Apple will use in the devices.

"Meanwhile, ABC News claims that Apple plans to use NVIDIA's graphics chips in the new MacBook Pros this time round. Apple had used AMD's graphics chip in the current generation MacBook Pros.
The new laptops are expected to be powered by Intel’s latest processors, called Ivy Bridge. Those processors will be faster than the current generation of Intel processors and improve graphics. However, the laptops will also get a graphics boost from Nvidia’s latest graphics, the GeForce GT 650M card. ABC News has heard the same from its sources, which say Apple will move from AMD to Nvidia graphics chips in this version of the MacBook Pro.
If the rumors turn out to be accurate then the thinner new MacBook Pros with Retina Display, support for USB 3.0, NVIDIA graphics chip, Intel's new Ivy Bridge quad-core processors, flash memory would be the most significant upgrade since 2008."
