Okay here goes.
First in response to your post. "Idol has Celebrity Judges" How do you figure, Paula Abdul was a has been 'disco singer, and did you ever hear of Randy Jackson or Simon, ... They were nobody .... Idol turned them into Celebrities...
FACTS:
1. The production quality was perfect, all the lighting and sound was right on.
2. It is shot in HD. I have a 52 inch HD set and the video itself looked great.
So, from a technical perspective. The production quality is right on.
3. Did you all notice the MAJOR advertisers in the show, Miller, Cingular, Applebees, Chillies, Pontiac. Those more than likely were adversting spots that were owned by SPIKE. That means that the agencies that rep those programs saw the show, and allowed or wanted their ads to be run in them. If you notice, the show had NO, "vegamatic" "Land Deals" or "Call Now For this Special Offer" Type of Ads. THAT IS HUGE.
4. The Challenges. (Except for Idol and Dancing) Other Reality TV Shows 'Challenges' have very little to do, with "Prize" of the show. Again I reference Apprentice and them washing dogs in NY, come on ... what does that have to do with running a billion dollar realesate empire? So, I don't see the problem with dumb little challenges, like getting into a fire suit
6. Buzz. I had Jet Ski racing buddies from all over the country call me and ask me "how they can get on the show!" When I told them about tryouts in LA a few months ago and the one in Florida, they could care less, now they all want on.
Everybody can critique.. So here goes.
1. Get Rid of the interviews, let the contestants talk directly into the camera, especially after they are told to 'Hit the Road' (and how cool is that, almost as good as 'Your Fired'
2. More Challenges, the dumber the better, How about a Soap Box Derby, How about a Pit Crew Competition, Like Changing tires, filling up the gas tank...Do you know that NASCAR has a Pit Crew Competition.
3. Casting: Contestants are really 'casted talent' How about choosing, and maybe they have some real oddballs coming, how-about Billy Bob the hard core Red Neck, How about some Hip Hop kid from Harlem, maybe a surfer dude from Cali, or a punk rocker with a mohawk. Reality Shows have alot to do with their contestants.
4. Lee, the Commissioner. Trump can get away with it, cause he is a billionaire. Don't know if Lee can pull it off. But how-about, if the person he kicks off gets to 'Challenge' him to stay, it would be pretty funny to see Lee running around trying to get in a Fire Suit, or into one of those Mini-Cars.
Bottom Line:
The show did air, it was watched, I laughed a few times, SPIKE has some BIG advertisers in it, and R&R owns the 'rights/concept' ... Sometimes studios and TV networks, just pay for an idea on a piece of paper. Think about the potential when they can actually see 'proof of concept' on the screen.
That's all for me today.
See You next week, same time, same station!
Please note: As someone who is very involved in the industry I can tell you ALL your points were made about Survivor, American Idol, Apprentice, So You Think You Can Dance, etc. The Youth of America, this network viewers have accepted, this type of programming g as their own. All you need is to watch the crap on You Tube.
That being said, RR is following what is now a 7 year old proven formula created by the first show Survivor.
And if you look at the crew shots, you can see it is not a 'low budget' production. They are using a standard network two camera HD crew.
That makes good sense. I agree. Let them know your ideas. Del, is a great guy, and a very open minded person. Send the producers your thoughts!!!
Good idea
Slinky39, where have you been, great and articulate post on the show. Hell, almost no even better than some of my observations.
All good points!!!!
Right On with that statment, Agree 100%
There are different challenges each episode. Del Weston a well known producer out in LA, is using the 'Apprentice Formula'
Please note ALL the other Reality Shows at there. They ALL look low budget,
Except Survivor and American Idol. Watch a few, Americas Top Model, Hell Bull Run looked like crap, Nanny 911, Who's Your Mommy, Real World, Simple Life, UFC.
Thats the point, Reality TV is 'suppose to look' like YOU did it.
Hey MiMi
And.."their driving Go-Karts", and Apprentice Contestants Sleep in tents and sell hot-dogs, and Survivor contests have water balloon fights and MIMI it has already been established that the top racing schools in the country teach their racers in GO-Karts.
Not for looks, but maybe all they are getting from those companies are product. gas, oil, tires, car wax etc
Yep, I agree, with post.
Yep, as a 'racer' getting sponsors, pretty much sucks, and I feel your pain!!
Your right, Planning is important. But lets just say, Pennzoil didn't sign up till one, two, three or even four weeks ago. There is still a good chance that 'permission' to use their name in a press release is still sitting in legal department limbo.
I am currently dealing with one of the largest event companies in the world, and no less than 15 people have to 'sign off' on every email or note I send.
Additionally a major sponsor would not 'come on board' till the program was in production, with an air date, As we all know was just three weeks ago,
That being the case, Pennzoil would have only been on-board for a few weeks, not enough time to get 'permission' for a press release out of 'legal'
I agree, and Pennzoil may not have allowed them to post a press release.
Every Press Release i do with a major client has to get approval from their legal department. And that alone can take weeks!! And believe it or not, is completely different then airing a sponsor in a commercial.
No, most producers pitch a 3 year cycle.
It is a TV network, they do what they want. There is no method, maddness, etc. Some guy is sitting in a cubical, trying to figure out how to make a program schedule work, don't read anything into that, as there is nothing to it at all.
The program airs again in syndication, then again in international territories, then again on the web, then again as a compilation DVD. Can generate revenues for up to 5 years.
I did not like the show, every-time they were in the cars at night, the lighting was so terrible that sometimes it was just their voices and a black screen and sometimes really dark, muddy, grainy video. I have a big HD set and it looked like crap.
A lighting director on the set could have easily fixed those problems.
There is a description on the SPIKE program calendar...
I know of Two Girls in Indy Car racing,
One Pro Drag Car Racer
I don't think any in NASCAR?
That is a freaking great story!
How many is that now, two, three, four coming out of Florida Local papers promoting thier local boy Jay!!!!
There is room for both.
Idol has amateur singers. and Dancing with the Stars have celebrities.
could bring up the awareness of RRGI
Great post!
Agree all the way. Supporting your position with this post
For those who are new or dont' get what's 'real' about Reality TV.
Reality TV is not REAL. All are scripted and re-shot countless times, to 'get it right'.
The Networks don't care about the 'contestants' (sorry contestants) they just hope that they can magnify all their faults for the camera and create drama.
It doesn't matter who on this board likes the show or not, the quality, the concept or Lee's haircut. It only matters if the show has ratings and viewers.
Jay being from Florida and them filming in Florida is already starting to get them good local press.
One last thing. You really don't want the host of a Reality TV show to cast a shadow over the show. If they would have used a bigger NASCAR name, All the press would have been about that name. If you notice ALL the hosts of Reality Shows are/were pretty much unknown before their Reality Shows took off.
What I like in what I am seeing RRGI do as far as producing the show, is following the accepted, standard, traditional production for making successful Reality TV Shows, not race car shows..
Just compare what they are doing to iDol, Dancing with Stars, UFC, Wife Swap..
So, dffhogs, so are right on with your post..and this long reply of mine to your post is that support..
Hey Thanks,
Moving my sister from The mountains to the desert today, taking a break at Starbucks. The post on SPIKE can be from any one, just make up a name and an email and post. No moderator, no rules, it's the wild west.
According to ALL press releases posted anywhere Reality is doing 13 shows. "full season" Not just a Pilot. However, a network reserves the right to cancel any-show at anytime for any reason. Number one reason is 'no viewers' however, Reality can hang in with just 100,000 to 150,000 viewers, which should be no problem just based on the subject matter.
Love to visit, it's always a blast!!! Off to my 4-shot expresso and the movers,
Wow that wasn't very nice of him. Very unprofessional. If you dont' know TV, know this getting a program, any program on the air is major! Television Properties and that what Reality Racing is, when the 13 shows are done will have a market value as a commodity. The program can be sold and licensed around the world. It could make money for the next 5 years. And with the growth of internet video, it could get re-sold again and again. The point is the stock will always have a value, cause the show will always have a value. Right now the going rate for Television Programming on the web is $150 per minute, and that is per just ONE site. There are now tons of video sites that pay for professionally produced video.
I did not say 'everyone' just 'someone's'
There are people on this site that know about racing, and production. If you notice I never post about 'stock trading' as I do not know about it. I only post what I know.
I am not a rocket scientist, and never posted that i was, but thank god you don't have to be one to figure out, that unlike you, many people on this board don't have racing experience, don't know production, and have never, ever watched SPIKE, to prove my point, all you have to do is read some of the post on SPIKE.
Yes keep up the name calling, quit posting about RRGI and stock and buying in and telling your dad, and how 'cool' or 'great' or 'special' the show is.
Kids don't talk like that.
Have anyone you watched this network? The network hosts the Video Game awards, they are home to UFC, they are full of T and A programming, they target the 15 to 30 year old 'which just happens to be the most coveted demographic'
More name calling!!!!
they do not moderate the boards. Have any of you watched 'jack ass' that is the demographic of SPIKE. Hell they are voting on hot babes on the front page. Posting stock stuff will not be good for that board. Do your kids really give a crap about stocks. On the other hand good old MiMi might think she/he is trashing the show, but those post that look like a 3 year old posted them, now that is great. That should get the SPIKE viewer interested, Go Mimi!!!
Great post agree 100%. Promo's are not important at all. SPIKE has a dedicated audience that will 'pick up' on the show. If they like it, it will move forward on 'word of mouth'. we know they are filming, we know it is listed on the SPIKE website. it is airing. and it does not need huge numbers to be profitable 250,000 viewers would make it a very successful cable TV show and appealing to sponsors. I am a big UFC fan, and the only promo they ran when the UFC reality show first came on the air was during one of the UFC fights on SPIKE. Bitching about promos and making it into some-kind of secret conspiracy is way off course.
About Letterman and shows like that, and getting 'free' promotion on Network TV. There is NO SUCH THING AS FREE PROMOTION. When you see a movie star on a talk show pitching his latest movie. The studio PAID A FEE, either by paying the star to be on the show (this way the show gets a big star and they don't have to pay for them) or the studio runs an ad during the show, or the flat out pay a fee). Or, the show airs on the same network. Newspapers work like that too. Ever notice a story about a product and then the same paper has an ad in it for that product.
I live in LA, and in our paper it will tell you that 1000's of shows are pitched to Networks each season, only a select few make it on. RRGI is on, that in and of itself is huge.
And it does not matter if they pay for the time, the networks will not let crap on, just because you paid for the time. They want productions that fit the look and feel and standards of the network. Oh and more than likely, the network kept some of those ad spots, no mater if RRGI paid or not.
BE CAREFUL on SPIKE POSTS!!!
Hey I just read some of your posts, you really need to be careful as not to sound like 'salesman' you will turn off their viewers in a heart beat. One already commented that the posts look like 'spam' and the show must be 'ghey'
Think about their demo, 'kids' 15 to 30...
They don't care about investing, or stock, or "poems"
And I am not 'trashing' anyone who posted on SPIKE, I think it's great, but these internet 'kids' are not dumb, if you 'hard' sell them, they will blow off the program.
Great networking, good post, promote the show!!!
Thanks I just want ti make available the 10 years of 'stuff' I have gone through in motosports competiton and how it relates to TV. Knowing what I now know, I should have purchased a Starbucks!!! That is where the "real" money is!!
Speed Channel is dedicated to Motorsports, I agree. Reality Racing is not a motorsports show, it is a Reality TV show. NASCAR can't get more than 80,000 people in the stands for their races here at Cali Speedway, in the 2nd largest market in the country. "they don't care about NASCAR" I would prefer to have the 'wider option' of getting RRGI in front of a larger, non-motorsports group, for successful ratings and viewers, then putting it on a network that limits itself to only motosports. You catch way more 'fish' with a net, then a line.
1st tier Networks are broadcast Networks like ABC, FOX, NBC, you can get them over the air with rabbit ears, or they are offered without exception on every cable system (it is Federal Law) and is called (must carry) ESPN is a 2nd tier network like FX, Sci-Fi and MTV and SPIKE. That means that most if not all cable systems and satellite offer it in their basic cable package. You can receive those networks without getting your cables system digital package. 3rd tier networks like Speed, Water Channel, Fuel, the BOX, G4 are only available on digital cable and are offered in various packages that may or may not be included in different pay plans. That is why, ESPN is available in 100 million homes on cable and FOX Sports Net is only in 60 million cause FOX Sports Net is on Digital. Fuel another 'sports network' is only in 24 million homes cause it is on a different digital price package. So, RRGI on SPIKE will have an opportunity to be seen in 100 million homes with cable and the 'Other Show' on Speed will get a chance to be seen in 40 million homes. That was the comparison I was making.
Well if that show is so good, why is it on Speed TV. Speed is a 3rd tier network, that is only on Digital Cable or Satellite. Speed TV is only a sports network. Even on its best days, Speed numbers don't even match up to SPIKE on its worse days.
SPIKE has all kinds of programming 'like a real network' not just sports. SPKIE has one of the top rated cable shows as in UFC. SPIKE is a top tier network that comes in basic cable.
As with any TV show, it can be the greatest produced product in the world, and it does not mean anyone will watch it. And it can be crap and everyone will watch, "nanny 911 comes to mind'
Just say'n
Great idea
I agree and if you are creative, you can get a bigger bang out of money spent.
I wasn't getting enough press one year, so I took out my own full page ad in one of the Jetski mags, it cost me a lot of money, but I got all my sponsors into the ad, and it paid back 10 times as much in the long run.
I agree, it is not up to just the network to promote the show.
I would have had all the contestants on the website, or on a myspace site and let the on-line community start voting for their favorites to create some buzz.
I would have sponsored other forms of racing like Karting, Motocross, and yes Jet-skiing to get the word out.
I would have invited the 'local media' to come out and 'race' against the contestants.
So your not grumpy
Thanks, got a couple of privates post that I can respond too in public. You can't just call SPIKE to find out about when commercials run and don't run. Try calling Coke or Ford and asking them when their next drink or car is coming out. Chances of getting that info are as good as getting a network schedule.
The Jet Ski Tour has aired on four different networks in the past 10 years. ESPN, FOX, USA & SPIKE. As racer in the top three and national champion, I have worked with all the production crews, hosted a couple of shows, had a camera attached to my helmut for a season and had a crew embed with me on the road for a season. I have done a ton of stunt work in movies, and have met the Pres of HBO, Universal and Fuel TV. All the questions people on this board are asking about, when a show airs, when the promotion airs, when, how, why the networks do this, or that...
I have already asked or been asking them for the last 10 years.
What else can they say, the show is airing, they put up a teaser clip.
Commercials for show the amount they have and time are up to the network it is called 'ROS' Run Of Station.
From experience this is what SPIKE will do. Maybe RRGI gets one spot tonight during one of their 'motor shows/and/or their reality shows like the UFC show.
Two to three on Friday night, one per hour,
Sat morning .. in RRGI's Time Slot a spot or two and maybe another 4 or 5 throughout the day after that.
Sunday 5 spots and then nothing till next Wed. 3 night spots. Thursday 3 night Spots and Friday 5 spots
Now they might run some after midnight
RRGI would not have any idea at all when these spots will run, as the network assigns the spots daily and use them as filler.
Remember, the network makes money off of advertising so, promoting a ;new; show is secondary to them.
Cool, maybe you and I should race!!!
Glad it was Florida and not Kansas, and I think I know those names and the school.
Plus I must admit, my direction was toward 'road racing' not making lefts,
Okay, bird is on the grill
CYA
Starbucks sounds good,
