Rather than sending down the jaws of death, If I had a pipe(drilling riser) laying on the ocean floor spewing oil out, I would send this baby down.
Might need a boost to the hydraulics and some modification to the ram,
seems if you set this over the pipe and activated it, would make one hell of a pinch off tool.
"So far the efforts have not been successful. “They seem to be having hydraulic issues,” said the person familiar with the effort."
I do recall Deep down building 3 SAMs Subsea Accumulator Modules
for taking a large charged tank of hydraulic fluid to the ocean floor to activate hydraulic valves.
Perhaps a modification on the connectors..
people are thinking about the problem.

btw
I heard on the news all safeties failed, even the shear to cut and close the pipe at the well head.
You know where the Co. pictures are, might be time to take another look.
Could it work? I really have no idea. Just speculating possibilities.
This video is interesting in that it shows a 7000 ton turntable, how tensioners are used, another type of lay chute, and a tie in with a ROV, All in one cable laying operation.
Turntables (carousels)
Tensioners
Lay Chutes
Are all products manufactured by Deep Down
Deep Down also supplies ROVs on a rental basis to customers.

To get a better idea of a 3200ton carousel, zoom in on this one lower right, sitting on a barge. I have seen much better pictures of this before, but it gives you an idea.

That looks like a drive unit HDU for a SDB, Subsea Deployment Basket.
They built a number of these units, powered by Hydraulic gear motors to rotate the table. Many here will recall the 30 plus carousels they made to sit on and into the steel guides your picture shows clearly.
The carousels were all lined up out in the west yard after they returned from the paint shop.
These baskets or carosels were loaded with umbilicals and lowered to the seabed for deployment.
Some where in these posts are the photos of all these being made.
The baskets had a big X on the bottom and sat on the HDU.
Having been here a long time, I have no problem at all waiting a little bit longer to see what kind of numbers the drilling riser order will bring in.
Flotation up to now really has not produced and sold any substantial amount of Drilling Riser. That is about to change, and we will finally get to see if there might be a silk purse somewhere in this lipstick painted pig, to quote Hank.
"DDI is a partner in the ~ ~ supply of the heave compensated winches,"
Very interesting concept here Spec, rapid response ROV vessel.
A perfect fit for Mako to rent or lease also.
I am reminded of Mako's involvement in the search for the missing girl a couple years ago.
Interesting info you found here.
Thanks
OT They will be discussing GS over on the Goldman Sachs board.

If I felt that strongly about the character of management, I would not let them get my last 12 cents. My sell order would be my final vote of no confidence.
I agree here Testrage. We have some things to consider about our investment and offshore drilling and what it may or may not mean to us. We also have some links and WE EACH HAVE OUR OWN SOURCES for further PERSONAL study and consideration.
Lets drop the political discussions here and now.
Thank you.
I will feel better when the drilling risers stacked in the west yard start to disappear as that would probably indicate delivery.
Tom, there will not be a 10-Q forthcoming this month...

Thanx for that dd Spec, ibox updated.
Float increase of ~4.6 M, pp owner perhaps?
Since the DPDW cameras went down some months ago
I find myself having much less to comment on.
Of course the cameras presented just a small picture of the
of the total operations. Still the manufacturing process was fascinating to view.
The photos also dressed up the i-box nicely and we all thank you Sagewise
for your part in putting that all together.

DPDW on the GOLD Rush List A+
PENNY HARVEST BOARD
Some of you are familiar with kgoodrich (881 people marks)
who runs that popular board.

These are of the overflowing employee parking lots you mentioned.
And a view of the original loading docks, as they look now.
The expansion is just to the left, not shown.
Thanks for the photos Tom. Yes I am still around and read this
board several times a day. Nice stock action recently and nice board action too!
This is recent loading area expansion.
I don't find any paperwork showing any sales yet,
although the public postings can lag the actual filing by about 2 weeks.
"there are currently no Predictive Insiders for this stock"
has been awarded a contract in excess of $600,000 to provide Steel Tube Flying Lead (SFL) installation equipment to a European Installation Contractor
Nice Sulfur, very nice
European Installation Contractor
I am just thrilled they finally have a product and a contract
that needs to have a portion kept out of public view.
If it was a once in a lifetime product, a once in a lifetime sale, there would be no need for secrecy.
Can you say repeat business?
If the cameras have been truly taken offline,
and I have no reason to think otherwise, this would be hard evidence that there really is a new hand at the helm.
Ron was always the strongest supporter of the public cams,
almost to an excess. For these to be offline, I would have to think Ron said something to the effect "Do whatever has to be done". Carte blanche imo
There are some serious changes being made, I wouldn't be surprised
to "see" (oops) fewer new or leased "toys" around the buildings too.
spec, In this weekly summary, the first picture of the courtyard
shows the white truck I was thinking might have had the Name or logo we are looking for. I remember one screencap where it was backed up into the side door of the assembly bay. If that photo is still in the archive, it may provide some detail.
#msg-30014328
I see so many of our screenshots are removed from the hosting service back then. It does give you a time period for your search.
That name sounds very familiar to me. I can't help thinking
I saw that name or logo on a vehicle or 2 by the assembly bay
during some fat tests or gamma weld tests.
It could have been somebody else too.
Spec machine, thank you for your continuous dd and coverage of Deep Down. Good or bad, whatever it is, you dig it out and bring it here for all to see. Good work to you and jk21 on the T/A share count updates also.
I didn't mean to say they were having any kind of problem with personnel, only that the specialists in the deep well commissioning, ROV operators, and people qualified for ultra deep services would be harder to find than someone in the manufacturing end such as a fork lift operator.
Yes DPDW is quite undervalued with a tremendous potential for growth in the future. I think part of the reason it is so undervalued is that buyers are looking for indicators of that growth and performance.
The division with the best chance for growth imo would be Flotation Technologies. I can see a potential for growth in the services sections, but growth there does require trained personnel, so that would seem to be at a slower rate than a manufacturing division.
You seem to be quite knowledgeable about Boogie Bands, and most of your posts about DPDW mention them. Do you have any interest in DPDW otherwise?

That is a very interesting find ftrplt.
While Smith and his colleagues still plan to pursue those business lines, they have recently received some interest
from the oil and gas exploration industry. That has become the company’s main focus.
In fact, Houston-based Deep Down, Inc. — a similar company name but no relation to DDU — liked the product so
much that it’s now the largest equity investor in Down, Deep & Up. Smith says the two companies are in
discussions to form a joint venture to manufacture and sell the Sub-Cat to companies in the oil & gas exploration
industry. The Sub-Cat will be manufactured in the Sarasota-Bradenton area.
â€oeThe Sub-Cat’s ability to move around the field [of work] at high speed and to submerge to perform the work
of a full class sub is a huge achievement,†says Ron Smith, Deep Down’s chief executive. â€oeHowever, the
unique feature of this product is the ability to submerge it, unmanned, below the wave action and then release a
remotely operated vehicle from its aft deck.â€
Ron Smith, who is not related to DDU’s Dave Smith, says he hopes to ultimately own a fleet of Sub-Cats he could
rent to the installers and contractors that troll the 20,000 miles of worldwide underwater pipelines.

SF Bayweb 2009: Planting the seeds of an observing system in the San Francisco Bay
A pilot project was recently completed in the San Francisco Bay from May 1-10, 2009, to demonstrate the feasibility of using advanced moorings combined with undersea and wireless networking to move environmental data to the internet in real time. The project was collaborative across universities and state and federal agencies and was hosted by SFSU's Romberg Tiburon Center (RTC) in Tiburon, CA. A new integrated system provided by the Naval Postgraduate School was used to sample the current profiles and transmit the data to shore in real time via an air/sea communications network. The current profiler, acoustic release, and acoustic modem were all housed in a hydrodynamic syntactic float designed by Flotation Technologies Inc. The data were transmitted to shore via a communication gateway mounted on a USCG navigation buoy. Many thanks to the USCG for recovering and re-deploying the buoy. Ship surveys were also completed by UC Berkeley, the Bodega Marine Lab, and RTC to help understand the observed circulation.
The long-term plan is to make such information available all the time, and use it to constrain the new community model of the bay circulation being developed by UC Berkeley and Stanford. The model output will in turn be used to address community needs in the areas of maritime safety, water quality, spill containment, and ecosystem health.
This website reports some first-look results from the project. It includes a locator map, data plots, photos of operations, a short video of a mooring recovery and a slide show with some additional information including a list of collaborators.
