The test of whether you have THC in your system is unrelated to whether you’re impaired at the time. It shows positive even if you used marijuana a week, two weeks ago. It’s basically like a morality test.
“With technology and time, and the fact that now there are 11 states that have recreational cannabis, I think that they are going to have the technology and the ability for a THC marker to be much more correlated to one’s impairment by THC as compared to just ‘I’ve utilized this in the last 30 days’,”

Breath gas analysis -
Breath gas analysis is a method for gaining information on the clinical state of an individual by monitoring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the exhaled breath. Exhaled breath is naturally produced by the human body through expiration and therefore can be collected in non-invasively and in an unlimited way.[1] VOCs in exhaled breath can represent biomarkers for certain pathologies (lung cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and others). Breath gas concentration can then be related to blood concentrations via mathematical modeling as for example in blood alcoholtesting.

Just a little refresher,
To date, oral fluid is the most studied and promising alternative matrix for DUID programs. However, THC is detected in oral fluid for 48 hours in chronic smokers during sustained abstinence.
"Exhaled breath may offer an alternative to oral fluid testing as cannabinoid detection in this matrix may better coincide with impairment."

One must first understand pulmonary anatomy to better understand the exchange of compounds between blood and breath.
Within the lungs, your bronchi branch into thousands of smaller, thinner tubes called bronchioles. These tubes end in bunches of tiny round air sacs called alveoli (al-VEE-uhl-eye).
Each of these air sacs is covered in a mesh of tiny blood vessels called capillaries. The capillaries connect to a network of arteries and veins that move blood through your body.
The pulmonary artery and its branches deliver blood rich in carbon dioxide (including VOC'S ) to the capillaries that surround the air sacs. Inside the air sacs, carbon dioxide (including any VOC'S) move from the blood into the air. At the same time, oxygen moves from the air into the blood in the capillaries.
The oxygen-rich blood then travels to the heart through the pulmonary vein and its branches. The heart pumps the oxygen-rich blood out to the body.
Hope this helps...

The Holy Grail for Law Enforcement: Accurate Roadside Testing for Driving While Stoned -
Someone, somewhere will be a zillionaire if they can make a field testing kit for reliable and actionable THC intoxication. So far, there have only been a few takers.
Cannabix Technologies, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has been working on a THC breathalyzer since 2014. The handheld unit analyzes breath instead of saliva for THC content. Development has been slow but steady. The unit is currently going into a pilot testing stage through a partnership with the University of Florida.

I like facts -
Hound Labs sensationalized claim of detecting the presence of marijuana’s "parent drug" THC in an individual's breath in reality isn't much different than testing saliva or urine. It basically confirms marijuana was ingested at some point and does little to definitively prove impairment.
The Hound device basically confirms recency of use giving law enforcement reasonable cause for blood draw.
If Cheech takes a single hit of a joint and blows into the Hound device, he will test positive and he goes for a mandatory blood draw.
Without being impaired!
Blood test (which tests residual amounts of THC as opposed to metabolites produced by the body) results come back positive due to past consumption for up to 90 days prior.
Result : Cheech goes to jail.
Without being impaired!
The distinction between "parent drugs" and "drug metabolites" is a critical one. The term "parent drug" refers to the identifiable psychoactive compound or compounds present in a controlled substance (i.e., for cannabis-based drugs, marijuana and hashish, the parent drug is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol aka THC). By contrast, the term "drug metabolite" refers to those byproducts produced in the body after a substance is metabolized. Though the presence of metabolites in blood or urine generally is indicative that a certain substance was previously consumed, not all metabolites are psychoactive (i.e., Marijuana's THC-COOH metabolite, which is readily detectable in urine is not psychoactive, but 11-hydoxy-THC is.)

Engineers may make additional adjustments to the BCU based on this early testing of the unit and additional units are planned to be built for field testing purposes.
Detection capability of the metabolites provides analysis of frequent users of marijuana who tend to retain THC in their body for longer periods of time, relative to infrequent marijuana users who tend to clear THC from their body more quickly. This data and analysis will be important for an eventual court approved device. Furthermore, 11-nor-9- carboxy-tetrahydrocannabinol is the primary metabolite from the liver, which is prevalent from the consumption of edibles.

Another interesting read:
Background on: Marijuana and impaired driving.
Marijuana impairment increases the risk of accidents. Nonetheless, the evidence suggests that acute impairment increases the risk of traffic accidents – though the magnitude of the increased risk is still a matter of study and can vary widely, depending on the study.
One literature review found evidence that 20 to 30 percent of crashes involving marijuana occurred because of the marijuana use. (This9 compares to roughly 85 percent of crashes involving alcohol that occurred because of alcohol use.) The review estimated that the crash risk increased 22 percent while under the influence of marijuana, controlling for concurrent alcohol use.
Another review found that someone driving under the influence of marijuana is 1.65 times more likely to be culpable in a fatal accident.
