Measuring trust with a brain scan
Researchers peer into minds of people who are sizing each other upBy Matthew Herper
Updated: 5:17 p.m. ET April 4, 2005NEW YORK - Researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine have developed new brain scanning software that allows them to uncover how people in business relationships develop bonds of trust -- or the kind of profound distrust that can scuttle a deal.
"There's no risk-free way to trust somebody," says P. Read Montague, director of Baylor's Human Neuroimaging Laboratory. In business deals, the problem of trust is especially weighty. How do to executives negotiating a big merger decide that they know each other well enough to get the deal done? And how does any individual learn to trust his or her financial advisor? Montague and his team performed an experiment that modeling such interactions and using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine to see what was happening in the brains of their subjects. Says Montague: "We found signals that predict what you're going to do next."
The experiments, published in tomorrow's issue of Science, revolved around what is known as a trust game, a simplified model of an economic exchange. One person, called the investor, is given $20, and told they can invest any portion of the money with a second player, the trustee. The money invested automatically triples, and the trustee decides how much money to pay back to the investor. Montague's team had its subjects repeat the exchange 10 times, allowing the investor to get a feeling of whether or not he was getting a fair deal. Because a lab at California Institute of Technology also participated in the study, the investor and the trustee were 1,500 miles apart.
Previous attempts to study how such games build a relationship have often lasted only a round or two. Alternatively, only one of the players has been in an MRI machine. "That's like having a cocktail party with one person," says Brooks King-Casas, a researcher on Montague's team. This time, both of the players were in the MRI for the whole time, so researchers could actually watch a financial relationship evolve -- and they found signals in the brain that predict whether or not people will trust each other.
Moreover, they found that increases in trust seemed to be far more powerful than decreases: Once an investor had learned to trust his trustee it was difficult to break the bond. The bottom line, says King-Casas, is that the research team was able to turn a fairly fuzzy concept like trust into something measurable.
The impact of work in this vein could be huge. Obviously, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley can use all the information they can get about how financial relationships are built. Furthermore, deficiencies developing trusting relationships play an important role in several mental illnesses, including autism, personality disorders and schizophrenia. For instance, in personality disorders, patients become trusting far too quickly and lose trust equally quickly at the smallest slight.
New information about these disorders could lead to new drugs for pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer or Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Montague sees the potential in his software, but he has decided to make it available as an open-source program, à la Linux, to ensure that academic researchers can use the program. He says that if any company wanted to develop their own version, as Red Hat did with Linux, that would be fine by him.

Mexico's President Says Border Fence Is A Bad Idea

(San Diego, CA) -- Mexican President Vicente Fox says "walls don't work" when it comes to dealing with problems at the border. Fox is quoted in "The Washington Post" as saying the border fence going up south of San Diego is "discriminatory" and "against freedom", adding that "no country that is proud of itself should build walls." President Fox is preparing for next week's trip to President Bush's Texas ranch to talk border and immigration issues with Bush, and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

LETTER FROM A FARM KID,
NOW A SAN DIEGO MARINE CORPS RECRUIT
Dear Ma and Pa,
I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. but I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc. but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you til noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route marches", which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice but awful flat The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.
Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6" and 130 pounds and he's 6'8" and near 300 pounds dry.
Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.
Your loving daughter,
Gail

A big Texas cowboy stopped at a
local restaurant following a day
of drinking and roaming around in Mexico.
While sipping his tequila, he
noticed a sizzling, scrumptious
looking platter being served at the next
table.
Not only did it look good, the smell was
wonderful.
He asked the waiter, "What is that
you just served?"
The waiter replied, "Ah Senor, you
have excellent taste! Those are bull's
testicles from the bull fight this morning.
A delicacy!"
The cowboy, though momentarily
daunted, said, "What the heck,
I'm on vacation down here! " Bring me an
order!"
The waiter replied, "I am so sorry Senor.
There is only one serving per day because
there is only one bullfight each morning.
If you come early tomorrow and place your order,
we will be sure to save you this delicacy."
The next morning, the cowboy returned, placed
his order, and then that evening he was served
the one and only special delicacy of the day.
After a few bites, and inspecting the contents of his
platter, he called to the waiter and said, "These are
delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the
ones I saw you serve yesterday!"
The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, "Si, Senor.
Sometimes the bull wins."

Merck makes a mess of the Dow
Vioxx recall sends the Dow components shares down 26%. Jobless claims jump, but Chicago PMI is strong. Was the Dow reshuffle the right decision?
Drug maker Merck blindsided the Dow this morning, announcing a complete withdrawal of its blockbuster arthritis treatment Vioxx.
Merck plunged 26%, losing about $25 billion in market capitalization, after the company said a clinical trial demonstrated that use of Vioxx increased the risk for heart attacks and strokes. Vioxx was launched in 1999 and had $2.5 billion in sales in 2003. Merck said the withdrawal will hurt annual earnings by 50 cents to 60 cents per share. The company previously forecast a 2004 profit of $3.11 to $3.17 per share.Check out your options.

If it wasn’t for Merck, the Dow would be close to unchanged, just like the Nasdaq composite. Instead the blue-chip index is down 80.82 to 10,055.42. Merck accounts for 3.27% of the Dow. To calculate the drug maker’s effect on the index simply multiply by seven, so Merck’s midday drop of $11.80 is pulling the Dow down more than 82 points.

Cosby Defends Remarks
Jul 29, 7:13 AM EST
The Associated Press
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Bill Cosby defended his controversial comments on blacks, adding that the music industry is "glorifying the wrong things" as he spoke about parenting and children at a college conference.
Cosby, 67, made headlines in May when he criticized some blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them. Then earlier this month, Cosby said blacks should not blame whites for their problems and urged them to re-examine their own lives
"I'm going to keep on saying what I've been saying," he said Wednesday, speaking to a group representing 118 historically black colleges and universities nationwide, the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.
On Wednesday, he said the music industry glorifies music that demeans women, praises life in jail and uses profanity.
He said college educators should prepare students to help poor blacks from backgrounds of violence and single-mother households.
Instead of joining the Peace Corps and going to Africa, "go across the street into the projects. These are people who need to see another picture, a brighter picture," he said.
I wonder if Mr. Buffett would like a poor little lady, age 72, to replace his wife. LOL
I would like to apply for the position....if in a month or so he is taking applications. He can keep all his money just treat me really good for the next 30 years.
This was an email I received from a friend. It would be nice to know Michael More's email address, maybe he forgot to read anything during the Clinton administration.
It is amazing how the facts are unimportant to so many, and how soon they forget! (read through to the bottom!)
"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." - President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998
"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." - President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998
Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.." - Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998
"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten time since 1983." - Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18,1998
"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs." - Letter to President Clinton, signed by Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI), Tom Daschle (D-SD), John Kerry( D - MA), and others Oct. 9,1998
"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." - Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998
"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies." >- Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999
"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has invigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies." - Letter to President Bush, Signed by Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL,) and others, December 5, 2001
"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandated of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." - Sen... Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept.. 19, 2002
"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002
"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power" - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002
"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002
"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..." - Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002
"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force-- if necessary-- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9,2002
"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ..... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction."- Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002
"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do" - Rep. Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002
"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weap ons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members.. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." - Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002
"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002
"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real" - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003
SO NOW EVERY ONE OF THESE SAME DEMOCRATS SAY PRESIDENT BUSH LIED--THAT THERE NEVER WERE ANY WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION AND HE TOOK US TO WAR UNNECESSARILY!
10 Life-Changing Technologies
Where would we be without organ transplants,
space flight, cell phones and PCs?
By Paul Boutin
Special to MSN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So many new technologies have appeared in the past half century that it’s impossible to list them all. But these 10 high-tech breakthroughs stand out over the last 50 years because they’ve revolutionized the way Americans live. We look back at their beginnings, as well as where they’ve taken us today.
10. Organ transplants. In 1954, Dr Joseph Murray removed the kidney from one human patient and implanted it in another. The recipient accepted the kidney as its own rather than rejecting it as a foreign body. It was more than skillful surgery: Murray had chosen a pair of identical twins, Ronald Herrick and his terminally ill brother Richard, in hopes their similar genetic makeup would reduce the likelihood of Richard’s body rejecting Ronald’s liver. Soon afterward, though, other researchers developed drugs that could squelch a transplant recipient’s immune system long enough for the new organ to become incorporated into its new body. Today, some 25,000 Americans a year receive a new heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas or intestine — and a new lease on life.
9. Robots and artificial intelligence. The term "robot" was coined by Czechoslovakian playwright Karel Capek in 1920 — "robota" being a Czech word for tedious labor — but the first real industrial robot was built in 1954 by George Devol. Five years later, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology founded its Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in a quest to mechanically mimic human minds as well as hands. Today, robots assemble products better, faster and often cheaper than manual laborers, while more than 8 million U.S. airline flights a year are scheduled, guided and flown with the superhuman assistance of advanced software. Still, some Americans eye such systems with the cynical view of novelist Kurt Vonnegut, whose 1952 story "Player Piano" warned that the machines might leave people without a purpose — or a job.
8. Electronic funds transfer. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco set up a paperless transfer system with the Los Angeles branch in 1972. By the end of the decade, instantaneous transfers of millions of dollars in value between banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions had become common. The real appeal of EFT today is its trickle down to the individual: You get grab cash from your bank account anywhere in the world, and use PayPal to buy and sell stuff on eBay without sending money or checks through the mail.
7. Nuclear power. When the Queen herself threw the switch on the world’s first atomic power plant at Calder Hall outside London in 1956, nuclear reactors were seen as a source of cheap, pollution-free energy. But a partial meltdown in 1979 at the Three Mile Island reactor in Pennsylvania soured Americans on nukes as safe power. Nonetheless, the United States today has about 100 active plants that generate 20 percent of the country’s electricity — second only to coal as a source of power — and have been steadily increasing their capacity. Will the next 50 years bring a better alternative?
6. Mobile phones. The idea for cellular phone service dates back at least to 1947, but the first call was made from the sidewalk outside the Manhattan Hilton in 1973 by Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher who rang up his rival at AT&T Bell Labs to test the new phone. Thirty years later, more than half of all Americans own one and cellular networks are beginning to serve Internet access at broadband speeds through thin air.
5. Space flight. Americans from 50 years ago would be disappointed to learn we never went further than the Moon — no Mars colony, no 2001 odyssey to Jupiter, no speed-of-light spaceships. Even the Shuttle is in trouble. But the space race against the Russians that dominated the national psyche (and a good chunk of the budget) in the ‘60s and ‘70s pushed the development of hundreds of enabling technologies, including synthetic fibers and integrated computer circuits, necessary to fly men to the Moon and back. And the astronauts brought back a lesson from space: "We saw the earth the size of a quarter, and we realized then that there is only one earth. We are all brothers."
4. Personal computers. Before IBM recast the desktop computer from hobbyist’s gadget to office automation tool in 1983 — followed by Apple’s people-friendly Macintosh a year later — a "minicomputer" was the size of a washing machine and required a special air-conditioned room. But the trained technicians who operated the old mainframes already knew computers were cool: They could use them to play games, keep diaries, and trade messages with friends across the country, while still looking busy. Today, thanks to the PC, we all look busy.
3. Digital media. "The camera doesn’t lie" went a saying not heard much since the release of Photoshop 1.0 in 1990. Digitized audio, pictures, movies, and text let even an amateur edit reality — or conjure it from scratch — with a keyboard and a mouse. A singer’s bad notes, a model’s blemishes, or an overcast sky in a movie scene can be fixed as easily as a spelling error. Just as important, digital media can be copied over and over nearly for free, stored permanently without fading, and sent around the world in seconds. It rightly worries the movie and music industries, but how do you put the genie back in the bottle if there’s no bottle anymore?
2. Genetic engineering. Everyone knows Watson and Crick, who unraveled the secret of DNA in 1953. But have you heard of Boyer and Cohen, who constructed the first organism with combined DNA from different species in 1973? They inserted toad genes into a bacterium that then replicated itself over and over, passing the toad’s genetic code down through generations of bacteria. Thirty years later, an estimated 70 percent of processed foods contain genetically modified ingredients, such as soybeans or corn engineered for higher crop yields. Of course, the much bigger potential — good and bad — is in engineering humans. It might prevent birth defects, and diseases later in life. But the side effects could be disastrous and unknown. Is there an ethical way to beta-test human beings?
1. The Internet. This one seems like a no-brainer, but the Net’s unique strength is that no two people will agree on why it’s so important. The world’s largest and most unruly library, it’s also a global news channel, social club, research archive, shopping service, town hall, and multimedia kiosk. Add to that the most affordable mass medium ever, and a curse to anyone with a secret to keep. Three-fifths of Americans now use the Net, but it remains to be seen whether the connections to one another will transform us, or prove that we’ll never change.

EMAIL FROM A FRIEND,
An Apology???
For good and ill, the Iraqi prisoner abuse mess will remain an issue On the one hand, right thinking Americans will abhor the stupidity of the actions while on the other hand, political glee will take control and fashion this minor event into some modern day My Lai massacre.
I heard some Arabs are asking for an apology. I humbly offer mine here:
I am sorry that the last seven times we Americans took up arms and sacrificed the blood of our youth, it was in the defense of Muslims (Bosnia, Kosovo, Gulf War 1, Kuwait, etc.).
I am sorry that no such call for an apology upon the extremists came after
9/11. I am sorry that all of the murderers on 9/11 were Arabs.
I am sorry that Arabs have to live in squalor under savage dictatorships. I am sorry that their leaders squander their wealth. I am sorry that their governments breed hate for the US in their religious schools.
I am sorry that Yasir Arafat was kicked out of every Arab country and high jacked the Palestinian "cause". I am sorry that no other Arab country will take in or offer more than a token amount of financial help to those same Palestinians.
I am sorry that the USA has to step in and be the biggest financial supporter of poverty stricken Arabs while the insanely wealthy Arabs blame the USA.
I am sorry that our own left wing elite and our media can't understand any of this.
I am sorry the United Nations scammed the poor people of Iraq out of the "food for oil" money so they could get rich while the common folk suffered.
I am sorry that some Arab governments pay the families of homicide bombers upon their death. I am sorry that those same bombers are seeking 72 virgins? I can't seem to find one here on Earth.
I am sorry that the Muslim homicide bombers think babies and innocent civilians are a legitimate target.
I am sorry that our troops died to free more Arabs. I am sorry they stopped the gang rape rooms and the filling of mass graves of dissidents.
I am sorry they show so much restraint when their brothers in arms are killed. I am sorry that Muslim extremists have killed more Arabs than any other group.
I am sorry that foreign trained terrorists are trying to seize control of Iraq and return it to a terrorist state. I am sorry we don't drop a few dozen Daisy cutters on Fallujah.
I am sorry every time terrorists hide they find a convenient "Holy Site". I am sorry they didn't apologize for driving two jets into the World Trade Center that collapsed and severely damaged Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church - one of our Holy Sites, and murdered 3,000 innocent American citizens.
I am sorry they didn't apologize for flight 93 and 175, the USS Cole, the embassy bombings, etc.
I am sorry Michael Moore is American; he could feed a medium sized village in Africa.
I am sorry the French are French?
I am sorry the French have forgotten that America, at great cost in American lives and taxpayer dollars, freed France from Nazi occupation and dictatorship.
I am sorry the French care not about freeing Iraq and the world of Muslim terrorists and their fanatical atrocities.
America will get past this latest absurdity. We will punish those responsible because that is what we do. We hang out our dirty laundry for all the world to see. We move on. That's one of the reasons we are hated so much. We don't hide this stuff like all those Arab countries that are now demanding an apology.
Deep down inside, when most Americans saw this reported in the news, we were like - so what? We lost hundreds and made fun of a few prisoners. Sure, it was wrong, sure, it dramatically hurts our cause, but until captured we were trying to kill these same prisoners. Now we're supposed to wring our hands because a few were humiliated? Our compassion is tempered with the vivid memories of our own people killed, mutilated and burnt amongst a joyous crowd of celebrating Fallujans.
If you want an apology from this American, you're going to have a long wait. You have a better chance of finding those 72 virgins.

With his vision he changed the world and made it a better place. Thanks for posting your two posts today. I like the guy in the back of his truck.
The best thing I have seen on T-V today was a father with two little boys dressed in Cub Scout uniforms saluting President Reagan and the Flag.
Jeff, Nice to know you are still around and your post.
This was sent to me by a friend. So I take no credit for it.
I have never read the Qur'an. I wonder if it is in The Prophet. In the 50's I received a gift from a neighbor of "The Prophet." I read it but can't remember if that verse was in "The Prophet". I was a Christian and knew it was not for me.
I wondered if that verse was true.
I really like the statement in bold. Bottom line, my belief is in the Bible.
The only thing I didn't agree with is your use of a prophetic verse from the Qur'an.As far as I have read and studied, there are no fulfilled prophecies in the Qur'an. Furthermore, that verse that you mentioned does not exist in the Qur'an.
Austin, (IMHA) I think our present President learned a lot from President Reagan. However, because of God's gifts to each of us, I think George W Bush, has a lot on his plate to deal with. I feel he has a plan and is trying to do the right thing for the world. I feel the media has not been fair to President Bush. But, he also has a strong faith in God, and remember "all things are possible with those who Love the Lord."
Most things are determined on the individual as to how that knowledge is presented. President Reagan used alot of humor that was short and to the point, and it was accepted most of the time. President Bush has had more rejection from the world because he was moving into a world of corrupted leaders who are using the United States while they run illegal (food for oil) scandals. The problem is we still need the world to help. We want Peace, not War.
However, God is in control, not us.
I posted this on Excel"s Board yesterday and I am going to post it here since we are off topic.
Just in case you might think of Iraq as "only" an oil-rich nation, ruled by an evil dictator for 30 years, whether it has been supporting terrorists or may not be very important, here are few important facts regarding the important history and roles that this nation has played down through history.
IRAQ ---- DID YOU KNOW?
1. The garden of Eden was in Iraq. (It sure doesn't look much like Paradise on earth today thanks to Saddam)
2. Mesopotamia which is now Iraq was the cradle of civilization!
3. Noah built the ark in Iraq.
The tower of Babel was in Iraq.
5. Abraham was from Ur, which is in Southern Iraq!
6. Isaac's wife Rebekah is from Nahor which is in Iraq.
7. Jacob met Rachel in Iraq.
8. Jonah preached in Nieveh - which is in Iraq.
9. Assyria which is in Iraq conquered the ten tribes of Israel.
10. Amos cried out in Iraq!
11. Babylon which is in Iraq destroyed Jerusalem.
12. Daniel was in the lions den in Iraq!
13. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were in the fire in Iraq (That's good news to know that Jesus has been in Iraq too as the 4th person in the fiery furnace!)
14. Belshazzar, the King of Babylon saw the "writing on the wall" in Iraq.
15. Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon carried the Jews captive into Iraq.
16. Ezekiel preached in Iraq.
17. The wise men were from Iraq. (where are the "wise" men today?)
18. Peter preached in Iraq.
19. The "Empire of Man" described in Revelation is called Babylon which was a city in Iraq.
Israel is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation is second? It is Iraq! However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. The names used are Babylon, Land of Shinar and Mesopotamia. The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots. Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is very significant country in the Bible.
Here's why:
. Eden was in Iraq -- Genesis 2: 10-14
. Adam & Eve were created in Iraq -- Genesis 2: 7-8
. Satan made his first recorded appearance in Iraq - Genesis 3: 1-6
. Nimrod established Babylon & Tower of Babel was built in Iraq - Genesis 10:8-97; 11: 1-14
.The confusion of the languages took place in Iraq -- Genesis 11: 5-11
. Abraham came from a city in Iraq - Genesis 11:31; Acts 7:2-4
. Isaac's bride came from Iraq - Genesis 24: 3-4; 10
. Jacob spent 20 years in Iraq - Genesis 27: 42--45; 31: 38
. The first world Empire was in Iraq - Daniel 1:1-2; 2: 36-38
. The greatest revival in history was in a city in Iraq - \
Jonah 3
. The events of the book of Esther took place in Iraq - Esther
. The book of Nahum was a prophecy against a city in Iraq -Nahum
. The book of Revelation has prophecies against Babylon, which
was the old name for the nation of Iraq-Revelation 17 & 18
No other nation, except Israel, has more history and prophecy associated with it than Iraq.
And also...
This is something to think about! Since America is typically represented by and eagle. Saddam should have read up on his Muslim passages---
The following verse is from the Korean, (the Islamic Bible):
Koran (9-11)-- For it is written that a son of Arabia would awake a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced; for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; and there was peace.
(Note the verse number...)
Groove, He was my hero, also.
I went to a luncheon in 1979 and he was the speaker. I remember thinking what a wonderful man. The country was blessed with his leadership.
Austin, I wish I knew the answer to your questions, I am as disappointed as you, I wish they could tell us more about what is going on.
I think JJ & Gm have given us a real good answer to the questions.
Thanks JJ & GM for posting that article. Austin I believe that is your answer. They have been telling us that all along.
