very nice.
Uploaded on Aug 24, 2014Sphere 3D is excited to announce the 2.5 functionality of its Desktop Cloud Orchestrator product which can provide an upgraded experience from a limited resource virtual desktop to a virtual desktop with more resources and then back again allowing the sharing of high cost virtual resources.
in the Briforum Boston video, PB indicated that we may hear more about context-aware desktops at vmworld.
Also, I remember from the Brian Madden podcast that PB talked about the microvisor and GPU de-duping, which certainly piqued Brian & Gabe's curiosity. So maybe PB's GPU tweet has something to do with that?
what was that word...simplexity :)
it wasn't Simon Bramfitt who wrote this article either :)
thanks petemantx, thats a nice complement. Just to be clear, I'm not a techie so my comments should be taken in that light. Collectively, this board along with HTFBS does some great research. I think we all feel the camaraderie :)
Its not a negative though.
The DX2 is a much less expensive appliance. Not all use cases require VDI workstations.
Thus we have the flexibility of providing different solutions according to use case requirements
I think PB mentioned in the Brian Madden podcast that eventually they will have an all in one appliance.
For VDI, distributed hyper-converged appliances have advantages, and one of the reasons Nutanix is doing so well.
http://searchvirtualdesktop.techtarget.com/opinion/Hyper-converged-infrastructure-lets-VDI-scale
Its an exciting development and both appliances will drive sales.
Thought they didn't want to jump the gun getting the sales force all pumped up to sell the V3/GW infused boxes
this may create some interesting opportunities for sphere

yes there are at least 4 people from Sphere in that photo, including John Morelli and Stoney Hall.
I don't think this video has been posted yet. JM & PB presenting at Briforum Boston. Peter is very excited about the commercial prospects for a distributed architecture model using hc appliances.
Also, he flags a new tech milestone coming in next few weeks... context-aware desktops

thanks pharminvestor..interesting
my first thought was that this could be google related, since NVideo Shield is smiliar to Chromebooks in the sense that software doesnt run on the device, its streamed to it over a network. Thus my thoughts were Glassware maybe working with google on the server side. But your right, it looks like it may be a direct relationship with nvidia
off course all just speculation... exciting nonetheless :)
NVIDIA SHIELD is kind of like a chomebook for gaming.
been wondering the same thing. Have they got something up their sleeve here.

nice post Progressive, this appointment has got to be turning some heads!
thanks Sons4, he is an exciting addition to our team, and fantastic further validation for Spheres technology
nice article on recent Dell/Nutanix agreement
http://www.crn.com/news/storage/300073226/hyper-converged-infrastructure-blockbuster-dell-to-oem-nutanix-software.htm
Nutanix makes converged appliances, that combines compute and storage, and is now said to be worth a BILLION DOLLARS.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/alexkonrad/2014/01/14/nutanix-101m-round-unicorn/
This is turning into a hot new market because it simplifies cloud architecture, making it much easier for enterprises to order and implement, requiring less technical staff.... like adding Lego blocks.
"We'll be offering to the market a converged appliance with compute and storage in scalable bricks,"
The TCO of internal cloud creation, usage and maintenance is often larger than one initially expect. Nutanix helped us bring this down significantly and the NX-3000 series continues this trend of savings through better density, lower latency, and keeping the simplicity. For us, at scale, simplicity is key.

here is a nice explanation from the bittorrent blog

Progressive, this is also interesting in relation to Chromebooks
there is currently another company that also offers a solution for delivering Windows Apps and Desktops to Chromebooks called ERICOM - and has been active in the education space.
http://www.ericom.com/education-chromebookrdpclient.asp
worth checking the homepage as well

In fact, Dan Shappir from Ericom will be giving a talk on Chromebooks in enterprise at Briforum in Boston. (Sphere will be there also)
http://briforum.com/US/sessions.html#chromebook
We know Ericom is watching because DS also made these comments after PB's BrianMadden podcast

I want to set the record straight: not only does Safari support canvas on all platforms, but it was, in fact, the first browser to support canvas. Canvas was introduced by Apple itself back in 2004 as one of the means for eliminating browser reliance on Flash.
Canvas support is pretty much universal in modern browsers. As you can see from the table here caniuse.com the only reason for working "canvas free" is to provide out-of-the-box support for clients using IE6-IE8.
There is a price to pay for not using canvas however: performance will be noticeably degraded. This is why all HTML5 remote access solutions that I'm familiar with use canvas.

yes this is exciting news with the potential to be a large and long lasting customer
Roth capital also reiterated coverage with a BUY recommendation
“In our view, the JV with Kolon reinforces HYGS’s position as a leading provider of hydrogen fuel cells and lays the foundation for expansion into a key Asian market”, Shen wrote.
yes, the fact they didn't PR the school use case got my mind wondering in that direction as well.
ANY Google PR would send the SP HERE into the stratoSPHERE :)
They said they have more enquiries than they can handle, so hoping for multiple announcements in near future
hilarious
Pepsiman, I noticed in one of your tweets to PB he mentions a new deal coming soon
some tweets from PB
RT @Wallstreet1975: @Sphere3D When is Mgmt gonna start talking about their great wins? >at least one use case coming very soon.
@guilhemdemilly @Wallstreet1975 @Sphere3D I expect we will be working with you for some of those as well soon Guilhem ;)
Yes, well said
worth reiterating Clipstreams advantages (from the 10K)
Clipstream® Advantages
A Clipstream® powered website does not require that its visitors download and install player software. Clipstream® just plays. Other solutions require intrusive codecs and new versions of their player in the background.
As Clipstream® is playerless, management estimates that at least 10% more visitors see the rich media content.
Clipstream® playback takes minimal CPU and memory resources, so the viewer's computer is free for other tasks. This means that many Clipstream® objects can appear on the same page. Other solutions often restrict to one piece of content per page.
The Clipstream® solution is less intrusive and, as a result, safer for users. Alternative solutions control a user’s device and can be used by malicious sites to install malware. Clipstream® content will never crash or compromise your machine.
Clipstream® content is uploaded to any brand of web server and just works. Alternative solutions require that you purchase, install and configure streaming server systems, running on dedicated hardware.
Clipstream® plays on any JavaScript and HTML 5 enabled device, so playback is not restricted to computers. This cross platform approach means the same object will work for any browser on any brand of computer or device at any bitrate. (An autodetect procedure automatically delivers the highest possible stream quality).
Because there is no player, Clipstream® encoded media never becomes obsolete and never has to be re- encoded. Content encoded in Clipstream® ten years ago still plays today. Other solutions launch new player software without backwards compatibility.
Clipstream® media will automatically cache because it is an ordinary web component, just like a graphic or a block of text. This means that Clipstream will save up to 90% on bandwidth cost (over 90% for ads), while providing much more reliable playback. This standards based approach means that there is no limit to simultaneous streams.
Clipstream® components can be uploaded to the cloud for third party hosting. Player solutions require complicated server farms to handle more than a few thousand simultaneous visitors.
Clipstream® objects can be embedded into databases for long term storage and easy context sensitive retrieval. Every aspect of the Clipstream® engine can be accessed by web authoring tools to create a customized look and feel.
Dozens of parameters provide functionality not available from any other streaming solution. For example, Clipstream® provides the only technology available to link every pixel or group of pixels in a banner to a different audio stream. This technology can be used for audio navigation of a website or to provide ads that do not require the visitor to leave the host site to listen to an ad.
all great stuff. the news and information flow has been super over the last few weeks - briforum video, brian madden podcast, midas letter interview and now the latest two gems
the use cases just keep piling up
Dell Drive Plus, Novarad
Ericsson, Leisure Pools, Nuvollo Corp
ICT Groep
Corel
Chesterfield County Schools... Chromebooks... Google???
and like PB said in the BM podcast
the calibre of the ISV's we are talking to, most of which we cant talk about yet
when you were asking about Dell and Ericsson, you know we've been around for a while, we know what the qualification process is and such for these, so thats why I say stay tuned
Doing a little pondering of my own, the future of the tape business is just great but me thinks the future lies in the past.
How does the tape business tie into the software (Glassware) business?
SanDisk buys Fusion-io for 1.1 Billion!!
www.forbes.com/sites/samanthasharf/2014/06/16/sandisk-to-buy-fusion-io-for-1-1-billion-slashing-370-million-from-2011-valuation/
nice post orion, bromium reference got me curious as well. PB also mentioned the applications are containerized suggesting applications are run in isolated user space.. of course there are many parts to the Glassware puzzle :)

Convergence -- the bundling of storage, compute, network and virtualization
According to tech target there is a new shift.. its called HYPERCONVERGENCE
searchstorage.techtarget.com/magazineContent/Convergence-reaches-a-new-level?pageNo=2
what does that mean?
But a new concept has appeared on the horizon, one that some might lump into this convergence category yet it’s factually different. At Taneja Group we call this concept hyperconvergence. According to our analysis, only three companies currently fit into this category: Nutanix, Scale Computing and SimpliVity. So how is hyperconvergence different, what is its value and who benefits?
Hyperconvergence blurs the lines between compute, network, storage and data protection, and almost creates an “infrastructure in a box” particularly for small to mid-level enterprises with limited IT expertise. Let’s look at the drivers bringing this concept to life.
Compute power is so inexpensive today that most storage arrays have tons of it to spare after storage processing is satisfied. There’s no point in wasting this power, especially when many unstructured data analytics prefer compute and data to be close together and not separated by latency-inducing networks. Virtualization is now a well-understood concept for far more technologies than the server, and storage virtualization can eliminate the need for a traditional SAN. Storage functionality is now easily defined in software and can itself run as a virtual machine (VM). Finally, inexpensive flash technologies that can be installed right next to compute and still act like storage fundamentally change the availability of IOPS. When you map all these drivers with most users wanting to manage their entire IT through a VM lens -- rather than separately for storage, compute, applications and so on -- you can see why hyperconvergence is here to stay.
nice find! another tool in our virtualization toolbox :)
putting aside the benefits it would bring as part of our total virtualization package, I wonder if they have come up with an edge here over other tape virtualization technologies?.... tape backup has been a good business for Overland. Tape is still important for off-site backup, especially large enterprises & gov
Another interesting thing to learn from yesterdays podcast was their strategy for protecting key IP. If I understood it right, they will use the Coca Cola method of letting only a select few be privy to the secret sauce, rather than relying heavily on patents.
Also interesting was their discussion on gaming at the end of the podcast. PB seemed very enthusiastic about their capabilities!
great work Peter Bookman! really interesting discussion.. wish it could have gone longer!!
software defined 'everything' on a chip... we are all eager to learn more about that!
nice Jan4! ... pharoah's army should be worried... is Moses about to part the red sea? :)
