Plug Power looking at Asia, expansion into retail stores, as revenue model shifts
Latham-based Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG) says that it is looking to expand into Asia as it looks to target sales of its GenDrive fuel cell to its customers for retail stores.
Currently, GenDrive fuel cells are used only at distribution centers for customers such as Walmart, Sysco and others to power fork lift trucks.
However, during a conference call Tuesday morning, CEO Andy Marsh said that those customers with retail sites might want to use GenDrive on fork lift trucks at those stores as well.
The company also said that its business model is shifting so that down the road, service and hydrogen sales and fueling infrastructure will make up 60 percent of its revenue stream, with fuel cell product sales making up 40 percent.
Hydrogen is used to power the GenDrive fuel cells. A major Plug Power investor is Air Liquide, a major hydrogen supplier.
Marsh said that the company expects to receive a non-compliance letter from the Nasdaq stock market because its stock price is below $1.
Marsh said the company will appeal, and he hopes to get an extension to get the stock price up to $1. The stock was trading Tuesday at 65 cents.
If that doesn’t work, the company will do a reverse stock split that would automatically raise the stock price, but lower the number of outstanding shares.
Marsh said the company will look to expand into Asia, but without using cash to fund the operation. Instead it will partner with companies that need a fuel cell supplier.
Shareholders have already approved a stock split, but the company would rather raise the price by driving orders and revenues up. The company, which has never turned a profit, says it could break even by the middle of next year.
Marsh also said that the company believes its fuel cell could be used in tandem with an electric vehicle battery in a utility vehicle, such as a delivery truck, to extend the range of the truck. That came after an investor asked about potential partnering with electric vehicle makers.
