Wall St’s poor start could bode ill for year
By Stephen Schurr in New York
Published: January 17 2005 19:17 / Last updated: January 17 2005 19:17
The new year is off to a lousy start. The S&P 500 is off 2.3 per cent, the Nasdaq Composite is down 4 per cent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has shed 2.1 per cent.
There are two more telling gauges of how much of a turnround 2005 has been from 2004. First, the bottom 50 performers on the S&P 500 so far this year have shed 11.4 per cent since January 1. Last quarter, the 50 stocks returned 24.4 per cent, leading the robust year-end rally that put the benchmark index up 9 per cent for 2004.
This stark change suggests support for the leaders of the post-election rally - a tech-heavy list that included stocks such as Advanced Micro Devices, Sun Microsystems and Delta Air Lines - has run out of steam. Second, in the first eight days of trading in 2005, less than $2bn has flowed into equity funds, according to forecasts by TrimTabs.
During the entire month of January last year, fund flows into equity funds reached an all-time high $44bn.
The poor performance - and absence of cash flows - has caught many off guard and raises the ominous question: is this the prologue to a bad year?
"This is a big surprise - you almost always get a rally at the beginning of the year as money comes in," said Fred Hickey, who writes the Hi-Tech Strategist newsletter, which holds a bearish view of the market. "It's following a pattern that we saw in Japan in 1990."
In 1990, the Nikkei stumbled out of the gate and ended up tumbling 39 per cent in the first year of a brutally long downturn.
The US market has stumbled out of the gate in the past and gone on to notch strong returns. In 1991, the S&P skidded 4.6 per cent in the first five trading sessions, and ended the year up 26.3 per cent.
In fact, some market watchers blame the rush by investors, especially hedge funds, to ride the rally that ended the year.
Charles Biderman of TrimTabs said: "Flows are historically strongest in January, so the market usually goes up, so the thousand hedge funds out there ended the year long. When everybody is long and fully invested, who's the next investor?"
The hope for bulls is that the weakness can be notched up to rapid-fire hedge funds acting like lemmings, setting up the overheated market for a short-term correction.
While the US markets were closed yesterday for the Martin Luther King holiday, this week should provide ample opportunity for stocks to recover, since earnings reports come from the likes of Yahoo, 3M, General Motors and Citigroup.
However, this reasonmeets difficulty when one considers that two early earnings reports from Intel and Apple delivered everything Wall Street could have hoped for - and the markets failed to notch rallies on either.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...I trust those here have enough shares by now that a decent buyout would be quite profitible tho certainly not why we have poured heart, soul
and our $ into this adventure?
Go Kite...it IS coming-WOW after so much endless suffering :)eom
Excelent response Brother Barge-ps anyone tired of lil ole wave
being a lil green so far these first two weeks of the new year
whilst all around us was red red red and on the two days where nas has been green, we do nothing or even go red?
Very Strange
ps "BatttleStar Galatica" the (2005 series) from the SciFI
channel starts tonight-hopefully all have seen the Dec 2003
miniseries that was the hihest rated cable miniseries of that year :)...it has been replayed this week and again Sunday.
Before Snacky swipes this REALIZE, yea I say, that it was the Cylons HACKING into mankinds defense grid whick nearly led to
its extinction!!! :)Wave must be integrated AND SOON!
Zarathustra the Wise
Damn Countryboy-not sure Ill be able to sleep tonight :)
Brother Barge,MANY more industries will give a dam besides entertainment! :)
2005 sure feeling good so far as a salmon...and we have had a couple incredible Feb/Mar's in the past. Yaya feels a dam may brake before the freesbies fly (of course its 70 today in the nation's Capital :)
Thanks for the effort WD...I take it, it is your creation
"Based on WAVX's 20-day average daily share volume of 2,796,580" not too shabby..as Snacky says "watch the volume"
TIMES SURE HAVE CHANGED-GREAT INFO-THANKS
519k traded....pos gains holding in a lousy market...eom
I hate da bastads but Wave showing some excellent strength!
Observation regarding recent share price:
In the past we almost always dropped to very penny of the PP
as "shorting against the box" etc took its toll. I must say
that our holding the line nearly 10% above last pp last few days of last week tells me we have/are entering new dynamics
for Wavx.
IMHO, it will not take much ie a lil news or some new serious
accumulation to see major momo in the positive direction.
Hopefully, I am making a sane judgement based on recent releases and extrapolations of such to wire $ into my account tommorow and await right moment/day to increase my holdings another 25%.
night all and dream of a very positive weeks & months ahead
FINALLY :)
OT Zen Zen

No '98 Im sure..."We are making terrific progress" "Things have never been better"
Gag me with a spoon
? when was the last time Wave ended the year under a dollar?
'99?
Sheesh
shame...all that momentum in volume and price and not a peep out of the company to perhaps keep the ball rolling??
again if we had 10M in the bank I would care not but ah we don't!
Thanks OK
You may solved the riddle :)
OT all, a client is asking me to deciper and get an answer?:
"have you there
Rongs the surf on A Aell (via Wave) security?
If can solve- I must relay in my language!
Thanks!
Surfs!
Try In-Bedded?
hehehe
ps Im going to sacrifice five goats to us getting over a buck
and beginning the long march back into luscious green!
Absolutely agree but maintain my position that a public company
experincing such gyrations after the most tight spread of two cents for a whole month and in need of a lil dough would have
(perhaps)added to our MoMo as more new investors having some grasp of the big picture may have been a great boost to get over the first hump...zee dollar!
TT have you not heard of my dream earlier this week when Lo & Behold I saw SKS approach and was dressed like Santa (and thankfuly not ringing a bell and holding out a pot :)
Excellent reflections yonder Web...one question as we have heard nought of any more action regarding the shelf registration then I may be too worried but on this point you may too comfy until such time as we hear of new money in the coffers it would seem to be our achilles heel )temporarily Im sure?)
No Problem-Looking forward to next week! eom
Big Daddy Bacteria
Nowhere did I advocate Wave putting a release out about volume??
The point was in this competitive market, when after a month of slumber (sh price wise and volume) the spikes draw attention...as a cash strapped company my suggestion Wed night and again today is whike shoppers are looking in the window say Hello!
Nice lil PR with qoutes from whoever stating how pleased
Wave is to see yada yada yada unfolding as recent releases and
DAILY NEWS BARRAGES ABOUT THE NEED TO SOLVE CYBERiNSECURITY
issues yada yada yada
The point is we need take advantage of these precious moments when Wave is being noticed-ALL safe and conservative but Something!
Sir Web-would love your thoughts on what I just posted regarding Wave the Mute during its first wild, positive week
in a long time???
I'd be happy Guv with something, anything that would help prospective newbies big and small get a handle on "whats Coming" Besides, wild days of volume all week except yesterday
as well as FREEDOM from the .80-.82 range we traded in all of November it seemed calls for something from a company needing
to raise a lil cash???
As Trippi used to say (of course times were a lil different)
when out of nowhere spikes in volume in price that wave met with silence was crazy: Qoute "I dont care if they put out something with SKS's shoe size just help the rally maintain momentum. If we were sitting on 10 mill in the bank and with all the progress and signs that we may really succeed then I wouldn't care-I would be stoic but that is not Waves current position.
Lets take that $1 hill gang shall we?! :)eom
Allshore-EXCELLENT...the mystery deepens why such an incredibly, ridiculous rich vein upon which Wave Wave sits and yet where are the investors? There shoud be a clamor???

ps I would hope Wave's PR nose is more attuned than in the past
a 500K Sh day followed by a 1M followed by a 1.5M would benefit
from someone taking the time to release a nice, neat picture of whats unfolding and (already anncd roles such as Safekeeper
and the IBM ref VH found)so potential Investors as well as Houses who may notice the spikes in price and volume can get a good, quick lowdown on what's unfolding. It would be quite smart eh?
Thanks Dig...makes sense, Cheers!
Agreed 246...but have you seen the financial condition of the company? No interest or concern "Oh Man 2005's gonna be great"
Ah, guys what is waves current cash position based on releases?
A reasonable guess would be 1-2M?
Can't sell if you dont have stall.
