WSJ: Intel Confirms Canceling Next Major Microprocessor
By Don Clark
Of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
SAN FRANCISCO--Intel Corp. confirmed it is canceling plans for its next major
microprocessor line, but said the move stemmed from progress with a different
chip technology rather than technical problems.
Chuck Mulloy, a company spokesman, said the company is accelerating plans to
introduce the equivalent of two microprocessors on a single piece of silicon.
Intel hadn't been expected to introduce such a "dual-core" chip until 2006, but
now believes it can deliver such a product in 2005, he said.
(This story and related background material will be available on The Wall
Street Journal Web site, WSJ.com.)
The accelerated timing would likely put the dual-core chip in the market just
a bit behind Tejas, Intel's code name for a new chip for desktop computers that
had been expected in late 2004 or early 2005. Because of the potential overlap,
the company concluded it would be more efficient to put engineering resources
into the "dual-core" effort, Mulloy said.
People familiar with the situation had speculated that technical problems
associated with power consumption were a factor in Intel's thinking. The
company's latest version of its Pentium 4 line - a design called Prescott that
is the first to use a new manufacturing process - has been criticized by some
analysts because it consumes more power than earlier Pentium 4 chips without
much improvement in performance.
Besides Tejas, Intel's move affects a separate chip, code-named Jayhawk, that
was expected to use similar technology but be used in server systems, rather
than desktop computers.

SAFLINK and SSP-Litronic Announce Merger Agreement
BELLEVUE, Wash. & Irvine, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 2004--
Merger Expected to Create a Security Industry Leader in Identity
Assurance Management; Facilitates Commercial and Public Sector
Adoption of PKI-infrastructure and Biometric Security
SAFLINK Corporation(NASDAQ-SMALL:SFLK) (Nasdaq:SFLK), a leading provider of biometric security solutions, and SSP Solutions, Inc.(NASDAQ-NMS:SSPX) (Nasdaq:SSPX), dba SSP-Litronic, a leading provider of secure identity management and information assurance products, today announced the signing of a definitive merger agreement.
Pending stockholder and regulatory approval, SAFLINK will acquire all outstanding shares of SSP-Litronic in a stock-for-stock transaction. Under terms of the merger agreement, the security holders of SSP-Litronic would receive approximately 49% of the combined company's outstanding fully-converted shares at closing and the security holders of SAFLINK would continue to hold the remaining 51% of the combined company's outstanding fully-converted shares at closing. As approved by the boards of directors of each company, the merger calls for each share of SSP-Litronic common stock to be exchanged for 0.60 shares of SAFLINK common stock.
The merger is expected to be accretive to 2004 earnings and to provide significant upside potential in existing and new sectors. The merger is intended to qualify as a tax-free transaction and is expected to close in the second or third quarter of 2004, depending on regulatory review.
By combining SAFLINK and SSP-Litronic into one entity, the merger uniquely positions the new company to solve the personal privacy issues that have slowed the adoption of important government security initiatives. SAFLINK and SSP-Litronic believe that a combined product offering can answer new legislative requirements in healthcare and financial services, and can help meet the growing demand for the new "smart" passport and driver's license. In addition, the new company's combined technologies can provide a foundation for security initiatives being implemented by large global enterprises and the United States Government's Department of Homeland Security.
The powerful combination of SSP-Litronic's identity management products with SAFLINK's biometric software creates a 100% American-owned, military-grade authentication solution. The combination of biometrics and smart cards brings advanced security to the enterprise, helping to secure sensitive access points from doorways to desktops. The combined company will be able to provide commercial enterprises with a scalable, reliable, and secure framework for identity and assurance management that covers network and application security, physical security, time and attendance, and regulatory compliance for automated manufacturing systems.
"Similar to what we've seen with the convergence of logical and physical biometric technologies, many security analysts and experts have anticipated that a combination of biometrics, smart cards and PKI would ultimately be required to address enterprise security needs," said Glenn Argenbright, CEO of SAFLINK. "The development of high-profile government security projects such as the Department of Defense's Common Access Card (CAC) program reinforces this concept. As a security leader, SAFLINK has long recognized the need for this type of convergence and has been closely monitoring the progress of this technological evolution. In pursuing this strategy, we carefully analyzed each of the major technologies in this field. It is my belief that SSP-Litronic provides the most secure and scalable smart card and PKI technology available today for integration with our software products. SSP-Litronic has outstanding technology that has been validated by some of the most security-centric organizations in the world. I believe that together we will deliver on the promise of biometrics, smart cards, and PKI integration."
For over three decades, SSP-Litronic has helped set the standard for high assurance in communications, data protection, and network security. For more than a decade, SAFLINK has defined enterprise security using biometric solutions for logical, physical, manufacturing automation, application access control, and time and attendance.
The addition of SSP-Litronic to the SAFLINK solution team builds on SAFLINK's acquisition of physical security technology from Biometrics Solutions Group (BSG) in December 2003, allowing the unique combination of biometrics, smart cards, and digital certificate management solutions to be applied to the identity assurance needs of the entire enterprise.
By joining forces, the combined company will enjoy compelling advantages that are expected to benefit the customers of each, including:
-- Over 12 years experience delivering biometric technology based
products and services.
-- Over 33 years experience delivering high assurance
cryptographic security products and services.
-- A scalable, reliable, and secure framework for enterprise-wide
identity assurance management.
-- An application portfolio delivering enhanced business security
for a wide variety of secure messaging, remote access,
electronic commerce, strong authentication, secure storage,
and media encryption.
-- A broad shrink-wrapped product offering targeted to meet the
needs of the most discerning commercial enterprise information
technology managers.
-- Proven military-grade solutions targeted to meet the needs of
the most demanding federal government security officer.
-- A broad and strong network of strategic partners, including
Microsoft, Dell, Novell, Computer Associates(NYSE:CA)
, Bearing Point,
Citrix, Verisign, Unisys, EDS, Atmel, Schlumberger, Lockheed
Martin, Iconics, Computer Sciences Corporation(NYSE:CSC)
, Documentum,
and Panasonic.
-- A proven track record with a wide range of government
organizations including the National Security Agency, the FBI,
the CIA, the Department of Defense and Armed Forces, the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of State, the
U.S. Department of Treasury, the U.S. House of
Representatives, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the
Environmental Protection Agency and the Transportation
Security Administration.
"I believe our combined technologies will provide the government with higher levels of national security, while building-in the appropriate safeguards for individual privacy," said Marvin Winkler, Co-Chairman and CEO of SSP-Litronic. "This merger opens the door for accelerated deployment and acceptance of both public sector and enterprise security initiatives, and allows them to standardize on a single, secure identity management solution. I believe an integrated smart chip, biometrics and PKI technology are the keys to deployment. With similar philosophies and complementary technologies, we believe the combined company will be positioned for growth and operational leverage going forward."
Added Argenbright, "Independently, both companies are extremely well-positioned on the largest smart card plus biometric projects in the industry -- most notably in the government sector. I believe this merger dramatically strengthens our collective position on these initiatives."
Upon completion of the merger, SSP-Litronic will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of SAFLINK. The new company will be led by a management team and board of directors selected from both companies. Richard P. Kiphart, formerly chairman of Memphis-based Concord EFS and a managing director of William Blair & Company, LLC investment banking firm will become Chairman of the board of directors of the combined company. Glenn L. Argenbright, President and CEO of SAFLINK, will remain President and CEO of the combined company. Kris Shah, Co-Chairman and President of SSP-Litronic, will maintain his role as President of SSP-Litronic. Marvin Winkler, Co-Chairman and CEO of SSP-Litronic, will become the Vice Chairman of the board of directors and is expected to assist executive management with strategic initiatives. Other executive management positions and members of the board of directors will be designated prior to the closing of the transaction. The transaction is subject to the approval of each company's stockholders, regulatory review, as well as other customary closing conditions.
SAFLINK and SSP-Litronic anticipate filing a Joint Proxy Statement/Prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in connection with the merger. In addition, SAFLINK and SSP-Litronic will file other information and documents concerning the merger and their respective businesses with the SEC. WE URGE INVESTORS TO REVIEW THE JOINT PROXY STATEMENT/PROSPECTUS AND OTHER INFORMATION TO BE FILED WITH THE SEC BECAUSE THEY WILL CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE MERGER. Any offer of securities will only be made pursuant to the Joint Proxy Statement/Prospectus. These documents will be available without charge on the SEC's web site at www.sec.gov and may be obtained without charge from the SEC at telephone number 800-SEC-0330. A free copy of the Joint Proxy Statement/Prospectus may also be obtained from SAFLINK and SSP-Litronic. INVESTORS SHOULD READ THE JOINT PROXY STATEMENT/PROSPECTUS CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING ANY VOTING OR INVESTMENT DECISIONS. The officers and directors of SAFLINK and SSP-Litronic may have interests in the merger, some of which may differ from, or may be in addition to, those of the stockholders of SAFLINK and SSP-Litronic generally. A description of the interests that the officers and directors of the companies have in the merger will be available in the Joint Proxy Statement/Prospectus.
C.E. Unterberg, Towbin acted as SAFLINK's financial advisor on the transaction, and rendered a fairness opinion to SAFLINK's board of directors. Burnham Hill Partners acted as SSP-Litronic's financial advisor, and Wedbush Morgan provided the fairness opinion to SSP-Litronic's board of directors.

Join security technology architects from Atmel, IBM, Intel Corporation, and Wave Systems as they discuss how you can protect your vital business data using Trusted Platform Modules. These hardware components, embedded into desktop PCs and notebooks, can be more effective than software-only security. The TPM provides a protected space for key operations and other security critical tasks that are not protected today. Using tamper-resistant hardware and software, the TPM secures encryption and signature keys at their most vulnerable stages - operations when the keys are being used unencrypted in plain-text form. The TPM is specifically designed to shield unencrypted keys and platform authentication information from software-based attacks. We will take a look at how TPMs and available applications and services can help you manage network security more effectively. And we will review the role of the TPM in authenticating users and handling other security functions.
You will hear real examples of enterprises using TPMs to manage and protect data in healthcare, finance, pharmaceutical and other environments. You also will hear about cutting-edge research into network security, authentication and data management, and learn how you can benefit from this research, which is being funded by dozens of computing industry companies worldwide.
Immediately before and after this informative programme, you can browse demonstrations of live applications and systems using Trusted Platform Modules to maintain data integrity, ensure users are authentic and keep transactions safe.

FINREAD comes to America: A Global and Universal Solution to Secure on-line Transactions
(extract from a Cardsoft email update)
Since the inception of FINREAD, the universal standard for secure smart card readers, Cardsoft has been one of its strongest backers, especially in North America, by providing a number of comprehensive FINREAD application platforms that meet various industry needs.
It is therefore our pleasure to announce that Cardsoft will be associated in the upcoming FINREAD trade shows in North America.
Knowing your interest in secure on-line payments and sensitive related transactions over the Internet, the FINREAD Consortium and Cardsoft have teamed together and invite you to take part in an Information Day to be held in the USA during the 3rd week of November 2003. Sessions will be held on both the East and West Coasts.
FINREAD is a set of technical specifications for an intelligent smart card reader to secure essentially, but not exclusively, financial transactions on open networks.
This Information Day will address both business and technical issues pertaining to the standard, especially in the light of the emergence of EMV in North-America and elsewhere in the world.
"The market in North America has matured tremendously in its acceptance of smart cards and associated technology. While in its pure financial transaction form, the smartcard still has much room to grow, the security feature has been largely embrace at the government level, corporate identification and to secure on-line data access (incl. SIM card)" said Sebastien Taveau.
"The swift emergence of FINREAD in North America will reinforce the industry perception of FINREAD technology as being one of the key player today and in the future in many different markets in need of strong smart-card based security on open networks" said William Vanobberghen, FINREAD Coordinator.

*DJ CBOE To List Options On Flamel Tech, Inamed, Wave Sys eom
NGSCB and TPM version 1.2
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/news/NGSCB.asp
Highlights -
Q: What is the Next-Generation Secure Computing Base?
A: The Next-Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB) is new security technology for the Microsoft® Windows® platform. It will be included as part of an upcoming version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, code-named "Longhorn." NGSCB employs a unique hardware and software design to enable new kinds of secure computing capabilities to provide enhanced data protection, privacy and system integrity.
NGSCB will transform the PC into a platform that can perform trusted operations spanning multiple computers under a trust policy that can be dynamically created and whose integrity anyone can authenticate.
The technology being developed as part of NGSCB includes new software that will work on a new breed of PC hardware. This new architecture will provide unprecedented capabilities for enabling secure processing on the Microsoft Windows PC platform. In addition, it will preserve the flexibility and extensibility that contributes so much to today's PC ecosystem.
Microsoft is building base-level software components, including a new operating system module called a nexus that will enable secure interaction with applications, peripheral hardware, memory and storage. A nexus-aware PC will be designed to offer four categories of new security features:
Strong process isolation. Users can wall off and hide pages of main memory so that each nexus-aware application can be assured that it is not modified or observed by any other application or even the operating system.
Sealed storage. Information can be stored in such a way that only the application from which data is saved (or a trusted designated application or entity) can open it. With sealed storage, a nexus-aware application or module can mandate that the information be accessible only to itself or to a set of other trusted components that can be identified in a cryptographically secure manner.
Secure path to and from the user. Secure channels allow data to move safely from the keyboard/mouse to nexus-aware applications, and for data to move from nexus-aware applications to a region of the screen.
Attestation. Users have the ability to authenticate software or a combination of software and hardware. With attestation, a piece of code can digitally sign or otherwise attest to a piece of data and thus assure the recipient that the data was constructed by an unforgeable, cryptographically identified trusted software stack.
Q: What is the "SSC" component of NGSCB?
A: "SSC" refers to the Security Support Component, a new PC hardware component that will be introduced as part of the NGSCB architecture. The SSC is a hardware module that can perform certain cryptographic operations and securely store cryptographic keys that are used by the nexus and nexus computing agents (NCAs) to provide sealed storage and attestation functions. At a minimum, the SSC provides RSA public-key operations (encryption, decryption, digital signature generation and verification), Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption and decryption, and Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA-1) hash computation. The SSC also contains at least one RSA private key and an AES symmetric key, both of which are private to the SSC and are never exported from the chip.
Q: What is the "TPM"? Is that the same as the SSC?
A: The term "SSC" is generally interchangeable with "TPM" or trusted platform module. The TPM is a secure computing hardware module specified by the Trusted Computing Group, an industry consortium made up of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), HP, IBM Corp., Intel Corp., Microsoft and many other companies working together to promote open industry-standard specifications for trusted computing hardware building blocks. The upcoming version of the TPM (version 1.2) is expected to serve as the SSC in the NGSCB architecture.
Q: What is the difference between NGSCB and per-processor serial numbers?
A: A per-processor serial number (or ID) is a piece of unique state that can be read by any application with access to the processor. The content of the ID is revealed to anyone requesting it, and there is no way to hide the ID or use an indirect identity. More important, users cannot control which software can have access to the per-processor ID. A key design principle of NGSCB is that no processor or user identification is enabled without the user's permission. In addition, nexus-enabled PCs will give users in-depth control of any such use or disclosure. A corollary is that users may choose to run nexus-aware software that hides or renders anonymous any identity (in most circumstances but not all; for example, users will probably always want their bank to be certain of who they are).
To understand the difference between the NGSCB architecture and a per-processor serial number, it is first necessary to look at what unique, per-machine state exists in a PC with NGSCB. One of the components of NGSCB systems is the Security Support Component, a small hardware module with a small amount of persistent, on-chip state. Each SSC includes a unique RSA public/private key pair and a unique AES symmetric key. The AES symmetric key and RSA private key never leave the chip; they are used by the SSC to seal data so that only the SSC can retrieve it and to make signed attestations, respectively. The SSC also will include a digital certificate for the RSA public key, issued by the manufacturer, stating that the private key corresponding to the certified public key is indeed the private key of that SSC.
Because the RSA key pair that ships with each SSC is unique, it could be used to identify the PC motherboard that contains the SSC. To protect against this sort of data aggregation, Microsoft envisions a model in which each nexus generates random RSA key pairs for itself and uses the SSC key only to prove that the random keys were generated by a specific nexus on a NGSCB machine. That is, Microsoft envisions there being a number of non-Microsoft "pseudo-identity providers" that will accept as input an RSA public key signed by an SSC key as well as the digital certificate for that SSC key provided by the manufacturer, and in turn issue a new certificate for the random key. The new certificate would attest that the key is associated with an NGSCB device but would not include any per-machine details or references to the SSC key. These pseudo-identity providers would be trusted third parties (TTPs) that would have the technical means to maintain mappings between the per-machine key and any random keys submitted for certification, but it would be these random keys, certified by the TTP, that would normally be used when communicating with others.
Note that, for some applications, the TTP could be the user; the user (or an organization that the user is part of) could self-certify keys. Organizations or people who trust that user could rely on that intermediate key.
An NGSCB machine will not allow any applications to gain access to the SSC machine key without the user's consent, and Microsoft expects that key to be used only when generating new pseudonyms (random RSA keys) or when migrating sealed secrets from one next-generation device to another.
Q: How is NGSCB related to the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) and the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance (TCPA)?
A: TCG is an industry standards body comprising system manufacturers, device manufacturers, software vendors and others with a stake in enhancing the overall security and trustworthiness of computing devices. TCG announced in April 2003 that it has adopted the technical specifications created by TCPA (TCPA has been discontinued). Microsoft is a founding member of TCG and anticipates that some of the industry standards being developed by the group will be incorporated into NGSCB.
Q: Is NGSCB Microsoft's implementation of the TCG or TCPA specifications?
A: No, NGSCB is not an implementation of the existing specifications developed by TCPA or TCG. The upcoming version of the trusted platform module (TPM 1.2) is expected to work as the security support component in the NGSCB architecture. However, TPM 1.2 is expected to be employed for other secure computing scenarios beyond the NGSCB SSC. (To learn more about TCG technology, those interested can download information and specifications at http://www.trustedcomputinggroup.org.)
Q: In what ways do TCG and the NGSCB architecture differ, and what do they have in common?
A: The NGSCB architecture encompasses a much broader set of functionality than TCG, but both efforts are designed to enable a more secure and trustworthy computing platform.
TCG has defined a set of functional specifications for a component known as the trusted platform module (TPM). The upcoming TPM version 1.2 is expected to work as the security support component (SSC) in NGSCB to provide certain cryptographic and data storage services. In addition, NGSCB involves the following enhancements to further secure the platform:
CPU and memory controller changes to enable strong process isolation (each application has its own execution memory space)
Changes to secure user input (keyboard and mouse) and output (display integrity and confidentiality) to enable a secure path to and from the user
Authenticated booting of nexus
Q: What is the status of Microsoft's engagement in TCG?
A: Microsoft is a founding member of TCG and actively participates in the organization. Microsoft is participating in TCG to advance the level of computing security and privacy. The current TCG specification, TPM 1.1, is not natively supported by Microsoft Windows, nor will it work to enable functionality in an NGSCB machine. TPM 1.1 chips are supported on Microsoft Windows systems via a Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) provided by the hardware manufacturer, which is written to the Windows Cryptographic Applications Programming Interface (CryptoAPI). Currently, IBM ships PCs that include security-related features based on TPM 1.1.
Microsoft continues to work actively with the other TCG members on a new version of the TPM specification that will meet NGSCB requirements and provide a superset of the current TCG requirements.
Q: Will other software products still run on machines with the TPM?
A: Yes. If the software runs on systems today, it is very likely that it will continue to run on systems with a TPM.
Q: Which versions of TPM are available, which are planned, and how will they support NGSCB architecture?
A: The current version of TPM is 1.1 and is available from three sources: Atmel Corp., Infineon Technologies AG and National Semiconductor Corp. Additional vendors are developing future versions. It is important to note that the TPM 1.1 will support TCG functions defined today; however, systems built with these parts will not support NGSCB.
Microsoft is actively working within TCG to define a new version of the TPM specification that will meet NGSCB requirements and provide a superset of the current TCG requirements.

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The Securities and Exchange Commission has held up Wave Systems Corp.'s (WAVX) plan to have shareholders approve an increase to the company's total float to 120 million shares from 75 million shares.
David Collins, a spokesman for the security software maker, said the SEC is currently reviewing its proxy statement after having finished a review of its 10-K filing. The vote, which was originally set for Monday, can't be rescheduled until the SEC finishes its review, he said.
Collins said he didn't know what the SEC is reviewing.
The shareholder vote is part Wave Systems' effort to keep itself afloat. In a June 30 SEC filing, the Lee, Mass., company disclosed it has only enough cash to fund operations through approximately Oct. 15. Moreover, its auditor, KPMG, expressed "substantial doubt" of the company's ability to continue as a going concern beyond the second quarter of this year.
"In order to fund our business beyond the fourth quarter of 2003, it will be necessary for us to raise additional capital. Wave is uncertain as to the availability of financing from other sources to fund any cash deficiencies," the filing states. In order to continue as a going concern for the next 12 months, the company said it needs to raise $9.3 million.
The company said it wants to use the additional authorized Class A shares for a number of purposes including selling for cash and issuing additional options, all without further shareholder approval.
Wave Systems said it plans to issue Class A shares for its stock option plans, upon conversion of its outstanding convertible securities and upon issuing dividends accrued on its Series H stock, according to the filing.
In the first quarter, the company recorded a net loss of $6.5 million, or 12 cents a share, compared with a year-ago loss of $11.3 million, or 22 cents a share. The company generated revenue of $16,000, compared with $246,000 a year ago.
Shares recently traded at $3.62, down 20.1%, on volume of 15.1 million compared with average daily volume of 2.8 million.
The company's stock saw a huge spike in the last several days amid very heavy volume after the company released two press releases announcing relationships with Intel Corp. (INTC) and International Business Machines Corp. (IBM).

Wave Systems Makes Enterprise Applications More Secure Than EverIBM's Independent Software Vendor (ISV) Program Helps Wave Systems Create More Secure Applications for the Enterprise User
BUSINESS WIRE - August 04, 2003 09:05
LEE, Mass., Aug 4, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Wave Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:WAVX) today announced that the new Document Manager Vault and SmartSignature security software applications in Wave's EMBASSY(R) Trust Suite client software family work with the IBM (NYSE:IBM) Embedded Security Subsystem, a hardware and software-based security solution available on select ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktops, to create more secure applications for the business user.
The compatibility of Wave's security software applications with IBM's hardware and software security solution is a result of Wave's successful participation in IBM's Independent Software Vendor program. This partnership is another example of IBM's commitment to help independent software vendors use IBM's hardware and software-based security system to make computing as secure as possible for the end-user.
"The early stages of any emerging market are critical. IBM has clearly established their leadership in trusted computing with their family of Embedded Security System personal computers," said Lark Allen, executive vice president, Wave Systems. "Wave's partnership with IBM will significantly help us in our objective to deliver open and interoperable solutions to business customers as trusted computing continues to evolve."
Leveraging the IBM security chip for personal computers, the Wave EMBASSY Trust Suite Client Business Edition includes the first of many new applications aimed at business users: Wave's Document Manager Vault and SmartSignature. Wave's EMBASSY Trust Suite represents one of the first portfolios of user software applications, administrative tools, and trust-based systems developed specifically around the new Trusted Computing Group (TCG) specification.
Wave's Document Manager Vault application offers a user-controlled vault for storage of private data, such as encrypted files and folders on personal computers. Document Manager Vault offers the choice of a simple drag-and-drop mechanism, as well as a set of integrated plug-ins for popular office tools to encrypt and decrypt any type of file on a local PC. By using IBM's Embedded Security Subsystem in conjunction with Document Manager Vault, sensitive data is protected even if the PC is lost or stolen.
SmartSignature is the digital signing portion of Wave's eSign Transaction Management Suite - a complete document signing and management solution, which complies with ESIGN, HIPAA and UETA legislation that sets standards for electronic legal contracts. SmartSignature uses the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem to protect the user's identity credentials and provide trusted document signing capabilities.
For instance, a human resources department can create and distribute e-forms (i.e. beneficiary change forms for group life insurance), which can then be digitally signed by employees, automatically forwarded for additional approvals or processing, and then archived in a secure back-end vault. Also, if the employee's PC is lost or stolen, the information is still encrypted and protected on the hard disk.
Industry Leadership and Expertise
IBM is a founding member of the Trusted Computing Group, which is committed to industry-wide security initiatives that create additional privacy, trust and confidence in computing. IBM was the first in the industry to ship PCs compliant with TCG's standards-based security architecture. Since IBM began shipping personal computers equipped with embedded security almost four years ago, IBM has received numerous patents for security technologies, listened to thousands of customers and been involved in the creation of industry standards organizations for security. IBM has determined that the network infrastructure is at risk if end-user PCs are not protected. The PC is the first point of entry to the network infrastructure. If those machines are not secure, the network is easily accessible and data and intellectual capital is at risk.
The IBM Embedded Security Subsystem is an example of IBM's ThinkVantage Technologies, a set of tools designed to help customers reduce their IT costs. ThinkVantage Technologies help customers manage their networks, secure their information assets, and simplify wireless deployment.

PORTLAND, Ore., Jul 31, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Wave Systems Corp. (NASDAQ:WAVX, www.wave.com) announced an agreement today with Intel Corporation that will help enable both companies to accelerate the development and deployment of trusted applications and services for safer computing on personal computer platforms.
The agreement will enable Intel to bundle Wave's software and services with a future Intel desktop motherboard, targeted for trusted computing platforms.
"Wave helps fill a critical requirement for trusted computing services," said Michelle Johnston, acting director of marketing for Intel Desktop Board Operations. "We believe the EMBASSY(R) Trust Suite software will provide good value for our customers looking for trusted computing applications."
"Wave has been working closely with Intel on the development of application and service solutions," said Brian Berger, senior vice president, Global Business Development, Wave Systems. "Both companies believe that in order to accelerate adoption in the marketplace, it is critical to identify and offer an attractive introductory set of services and high value applications. We are delighted to be working with Intel by providing solutions for this emerging market.
"Wave believes that a portfolio of services will make trusted computing an important part of the personal computing market going forward. It is our job, to work with industry leaders like Intel, to help identify and develop those services that will bring the most value to the enterprise - as trusted hardware is deployed and a more secure computing environment becomes a reality." Berger said.
The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) is a new industry organization dedicated to embedding trust and security more broadly into computing platforms and devices. The TCG has defined a semiconductor device known as the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) to serve as a root of trust for protected activities on enabled platforms. TPMs provide the trusted hardware resources used by Wave services to extend trusted functions within a PC.
Through acceleration of the design, use, management and adoption of trusted systems for a variety of computing platforms, the TCG is helping enterprise computer users realize increased security through open standards. Earlier this year, Wave was among the initial industry leaders promoting the TCG to develop, define, and promote hardware-enabled trusted computing and security technologies, including related hardware building blocks and software interfaces, across multiple platforms, peripherals and devices.
Wave recently announced a licensing agreement with National Semiconductor to bundle Wave's EMBASSY(R) Trust Suite with National's PC21100 SafeKeeper(TM) trusted platform modules. At Comdex in November 2002 it was announced that Wave's solutions have been enabled on the Infineon Technologies TPM to make a secure computing platform, complete with an out-of-the-box suite of secure and trusted services, available to personal computer manufacturers.
