Rexahn Pharmaceuticals Inc. is gearing up for what it says will be a banner year in 2010, capped by a partnership deal that could eventually yield the Rockville company three times the amount of cash it has burned through in its eight years of existence.
With plans to run an unprecedented five clinical trials on experimental drugs next year, Rexahn officials said they hope to pay the bills in a way that would dramatically change the tenor of the small biotech. They are deep into discussions with seven pharmaceutical companies to sign a funding partner for a depression drug they estimate could bring home upward of $1 billion over the next several years.
Such a blockbuster partnership would catapult the company into a new league, remaking a cash-strapped biotech that survived as an over-the-counter stock and under-the-radar drugmaker for much of its lifetime. A billion-dollar deal would show the maturity of a one-time incubator company that struggled this past summer to stay listed on the American Stock Exchange.
“Anything sizeable, even on paper, would be a blessing for such a small company,” said Elemer Piros, a biotechnology analyst with New York investment bank Rodman & Renshaw LLC, who agrees a billion-dollar deal is conceivable for Rexahn next year. “It would represent a big validation step of their program by a sizable partner.”
As illustration of Rexahn’s size, Piros and his partner at Rodman & Renshaw are the only Wall Street analysts who follow Rexahn.
The company employs 14 people and leases a little less than 5,500 square feet for its Shady Grove Road headquarters, along with some labs at the Germantown incubator. Rexahn has made about $500,000 in total revenue since its founding.
But its pipeline pits the diminutive biotech against the world’s most goliath pharmaceutical companies. With a former National Cancer Institute scientist in the CEO’s spot, Rexahn is working in the crowded cancer space with its Archexin platform, which blocks the production of a cancer-boosting protein. The biotech will also launch a new midstage test next year of its sexual dysfunction drug, Zoraxel, which regulates the body’s serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters to uplift a man’s libido — in direct competition with Pfizer Inc.’s Viagra, Eli Lilly & Co.’s Cialis and Levitra, marketed by pharmas like GlaxoSmithKline PLC and Bayer AG.
The same biological tactic factors into Rexahn’s third key product, Serdaxin, which regulates serotonin and dopamine levels to control a major depressive disorder, an
$11 billion-plus market.
Serdaxin is the subject of Rexahn’s partnership discussions, 15 of which required signed confidential disclosure agreements and two of which involve a top 10 pharmaceutical giant. Interest spiked in October, when Rexahn scored positive results from a midstage drug trial of Serdaxin, and by next March the company expects to test how the drug works on Parkinson’s disease patients in a new trial. If animal models prove true, Rexahn said Serdaxin could be a fix for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
“Simply put, there’s no other drug that can do both,” said CEO and founder Chang Ahn. “Stopping the neurodegenerative process at the same time as treating depression.”
With a forecasted monthly burn rate of $800,000, only $10 million in the bank now and a minimum $4 million expected in 2010 from its first-ever partner, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., Rexahn would have to postpone its ambitious clinical testing plans if it failed to negotiate a high-priced partnership. But company officials said they’re optimistic for an announcement as early as the first half of the year.
“If that happens, we will not have a need to raise any more money or go to the equity markets,” said Rexahn President Rick Soni. “And that’s a big plus.”
Holy shit!! it made it to heaven now, what is the reason for this massive run? unfreaking believable

By leveraging the value of his fund, Soros was able to take a $10 billion short position on the pound which made him US$1 billion. This trade is considered one of the greatest trades of all time.

Shit, ive owned all the bad boys over the years CEMJQ at .039 hit 1.48, APWR at 3.50 hit 20 bucks, ATSG at .27 hit 4, GSAT at .50 hit 2 too freaking bad I didn't do this shit right or else i'd be a millionaire, where is that rope at cause I need it!

Hey gail, I noticed in the charts that the sar flipped, it used to be at .0024 now its 0045, I dont like when that happens, whats your take on our situation?
http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=igsm&p=D&b=5&g=0&id=p63930393275
Hey, check out RNN and tell me what you think? you seem like a smart guy so i went ahead and person marked you.
im looking for the next HGSI and i think RNN could possibly be that one, but its risky the company must obtain a partnership deal
This can all change once we get real money coming into this play, who knows when that will happen for sure.
