Although I've clicked "Hide Board Info" it seems like every time the pictures change I get the board info on the screen... have to reclick "Hide Board Info"...annoying at best. Suppose I should contact the board people... but want to keep a low profile.

Don't go nuts on me...
Deerhunter was a male movie... saw it the day it opened in Manhattan with the current boyfriend... I thought it was a piece of crap... he was devastated...
From my POV... did not see the motivation for going back in there... too many obvious symbolic shots... one of which was the last supper.
You're a guy... ergo you get it and I can't...
Cimino went on to prove his mediocrity with Heaven's Gate... saw that circa opening with a cinematographer boyfriend ... we went to check out an X million dollar failure... when he got home he received word that his dad had died while we were at the movie. Still believe his dad was taken to a finer place because we were seeing him through Heaven's Gate when it happened.
Silly me.
Thanks for the free association memory...

Just got off the phone with magic house mama... told her I'd email her the post... asked to speak to the 9-year-old for a minute... a first in my lifetime... I've never had the desire to talk to a kid... but this one is absolutely special... truly heartwarming... mama had to wrestle with her to get the phone back...
Thinking about an Ann Landers reply as of late... someone wrote in about how her in-laws were cold toward her children... that the kids would climb on their laps looking for affection... my gut reaction... yuck... control them. Annie's reply... don't inflict your children on others... they should not be climbing on people's laps... right on Annie... their s.h.i.t. does not smell like ice cream...
Kids are great... they are the future of America... but they are kids and they need adult supervision and good examples.
Not willing to do it from this end... but am eternally grateful to those who are and who do a good job of it.
As to family dinners... those were once every other year... the reason my folks left IL for NJ was to get away from their families... kind of made me think twice before putting anymore relatives on the planet... though I am glad my sister did... the nieces (2) and nephew are exquisite... my job as an aunt is to think they are perfect... they are ... her job is to keep them in line... she and her husband do.
I prefer my job...

Welcome back, trkyhntr...
Glad Easter was bearable...
Am with you 100% on your education post. I see what's coming out of the colleges these days and it is appalling... these kids cannot write at a junior high level, much less a college one... try to decipher their emails... appalling... they think spelling, grammar... any kind of accuracy doesn't count... it does.
What they fail to realize is... to those of us who have these skills and take the time to proofread sans the machine tools... they come off like congenital idiots.
I lay the blame on the parents too.
They are so afraid of being disliked and so desperate to be their kids' friends they forget what their job is.
One of the reasons I find the magic house family so delightful is that the parents are parents... magic house mama said to me, "I'd love to be my kids' friend and their mother, but I can't... and since I have a choice... I choose to be their mother." It shows. There are boundaries. These kids know that there are activities reserved for adulthood and that it is worth the wait so you have something to look forward to.
Think that is one of the reasons so many extremely young ones are getting into drugs and alcohol at such young ages these days... their parents never draw the line between childhood and adulthood with them... their children are not their peers, yet too many treat them as though they are... and include them in adventures and conversations that are over their head.
One of the best things about childhood visits to the extended family in IL and the huge parties was the fine tradition of the Kindertisch... children's table... kids ate together... adults separately... far more fun than everyone having to behave in front of each other... you knew you hit the bigtime when you were allowed to join the adult table.
Sigh... so glad I do not have children... and also glad there are folks like the magic house couple who are willing to share their bright, spirited but well-mannered children with me.

Hey, Paule... it was a dang fine piece... otherwise it would have been ignored... think you held up a mirror at angle most don't view themselves from... kind of funny. What the heck, you guys like to eat the meat and there's only one way to get it... I adore eating meat (save the cracks) and am grateful to the folks who do the processing.
killing is not antiseptic...
learned that during my month on homicide grand jury in Manhattan... every afternoon... five days a week... for four weeks straight... I was nauseated. We got to see pictures as well as hear stories... as secretary... I got to take notes... very enlightening.
there were light moments though... one of the murders happened in front of a Mexican restaurant a block away from me... good food... one of the witnesses who walked in was a well-groomed, casually but impeccably dressed black man... who looked incredibly familiar... turns out he was one of the local "beggars" who made his living from his wheelchair... was probably making far more money than I was in those days... he gave his testimony and at the end the A.D.A asked him what he did after he saw the shooting... he said...
"I hauled ass out of there."
A.D.A.
"Excuse me?"
"I picked up my wheelchair and ran."
A BLOODY MIRACLE! Cured!
Dang I digress...
Write away Paule... I enjoy reading you.

Will never reach us...
will just hit the third world... and not much of it.
Lived on Kwajalein which was in close proximity to Bikini Atoll where most of the atmospheric testing of the nuclear bomb in the Pacific was performed. May have been about 200 miles away... atoll was unlivable at the time, but we were swimming in those waters and breathing the air... no reports of excessive cancers from the group... that was in '62-'65... still healthy... don't glow in the dark... and I've always been this foul-tempered... actually I was worse when I was younger, so maybe it was a good thing. Japan is habitable.
Just don't think it is necessary and am seriously worried about the repercussions here if Arafat and his gang of alleged terrorist leaders holed up in the compound are killed... nothing more inspirational than martyrs.
What a stinking mess... my heart goes out to the civilians who are just trying to go about their day to day business when these whack jobs decide to blow themselves and everyone around them into oblivion... can feel the fear more now that NYC got its hit... my prayers are with this nation.
I propose camp for suicide bombers... we'll reserve an isolated place in the desert for you and provide the explosives... just don't take anyone with you on your one-way trip to Allah.

Welcome back Paule...
Glad the hunt was successful... quite the graphic description... know that I'd have to be starving before I could kill an animal... rough work... someone has to do it so I can eat, but eek...
Years ago I had friends with a large property... they had a pony run out back for their daughter... when she outgrew the pony, her father still had the run and decided that if his daughter was going to eat meat she should know where it came from... so he bought a piglet and raised it in the run... when it was little, it was cute. His daughter named it Snorty... he named it Dinner.
By the time the pig reached slaughtering size, she thought it was gross and shed no tears when it went off to the meat packing house... managed to enjoy her share of the meat too...
Around the same time, this friend had another friend who had bought himself a little 10-acre farm in west central NJ with a fully restored 200-year-old farmhouse... paid cash... amazing the kind of money that two coke deals can garner (he wasn't into it... preferred pot)... he was raising pigs... decided to butcher one and have a luau for the gang... the guys dug the pit, heated the stones, and buried the pig... when we went there the day before for the preliminaries, the owner started talking about the slaughterhouse process... I began to faint... had to go sit down on the other side of the barn to get my bearings... to this day, I'm still not sure sure if it was the pot and the summer heat or the story... probably the combination of factors. Fully recovered and thoroughly enjoyed the food the next day.
Long out of touch with all of them... Dang I miss my youth.

Evening Castle...
Glad Easter went well for you and I hope your folks are healthy soon... Thanks for the egg timing... I do have it where I see it every time I open the door... it is so pretty... the kid sure knows how to warm this cold heart.
Nice day out here though someone forgot to tell the March winds that April has arrived... made for an interesting ride home... sun is high and bright enough to warm the house above my normal settings (60-62)... I do turn the heat down to about 50-55 when I'm not here and I'm coming home to a toasty warm house that's about 66°. Neat.
Checked out the Hash Bash site and got confused for a minute when they said it was the 31st... checked the chronology and yes, it did start in '72... I'm not that confused... so 30th anniversary and 31st event... amazing... remember it being a gorgeous sunny day, sitting on the grass catching a buzz with the current boyfriend... he had his super cool high end black Frisbee with him and decided to play catch with a strange dog... the game went well until he realized that the dog was biting holes into the plastic when he caught it... pretty funny... I was trying not to giggle 'cause he was not happy. LOL now.
So, thanks for the link... have to add it to my home favorites... think I'll keep it off the office machine...
Hope you're having a good one and thanks for the rain wishes.

No, but not for any moral reasons
or love lost... there are too many of them loose on the planet and they'll only regroup and start blowing themselves up in our restaurants and marketplaces... which they may start doing anyway... especially if Arafat is killed... not worth killing the innocent and there are one or two innocent people there. A coworker has relatives in Tel Aviv and north of Haifa where the current "action" is... we were talking about the situation at lunch... he is worried sick about his cousins to put it mildly. Wouldn't want a nice man like him to lose part of his family to a nuclear blast.
What a stinking mess.
Tom Friedman had a great editorial in the Times recently... I'll grab the link.

Who's doing the pictures here?
Sharon (spelling?) has a personal vendetta against Arafat...

When one side is dead... there will be peace in the Middle East... if we did not need the oil... we would not care what the heck was going on in that Godforsaken part of the planet. They are fighting over nothing. It will come back to haunt us... from an East coast former Manhattan POV... hope they strike west of where I am... and may that not happen.

Hey Castle...
Doing anything special for the day? I spent the late morning/early afternoon at the magic house... the little one decorated an egg just for me... quite beautiful too... dang she is a sweetheart... how long can I keep it in the refrigerator before it's too old to eat? Much too pretty to destroy... love that family... kids are delightful... we get our visit in... then... adults not afraid to tell the kids to get lost for a while so we can have a decent conversation... there are things the kinder don't need to know about yet... preserves their childhood for a bit... harkens back to the good old days of children being seen and not heard... very relaxing.
Hope your day is going well... very cloudy... promise of rain overnight... will believe it when it happens...

HOW TO WRITE GOOD
Avoid run-on sentences they are hard to read.
No sentence fragments.
It behooves us to avoid archaisms.
Also, avoid awkward or affected alliteration.
Don't use no double negatives.
I've said it once if I have said it one thousand
times: Resist hyperbole.
Avoid commas, that are not necessary.
Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky.
Writing carefully, dangling participles should not be
used.
Kill all exclamation points!!!
Never use a long word when a diminutive one will do.
Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.
Take the bull by the hand, and don't mix metaphors.
Don't verb nouns.
Never, ever use repetitive redundancies.
Last but not least, avoid cliches like the plague.

Happy Easter... eom
I hear you like gin...
her hostess blurted out, instantly afraid of appearing tactless. But the Queen Mother thought it delightful.
"I hadn't realized I enjoyed that reputation," she replied. "But as I do, perhaps you could make it a large one."
The Queen Mother died peacefully in her sleep this afternoon... she would have fit in well with this crowd... horse racing and trout fishing were among her favorite activities. She was the fourth daughter and ninth child of Lord Strathmore born in Glamis Castle, Scotland where Macbeth murdered Duncan.
Her father was a bona fide aristocratic eccentric... Dragging dead branches from his woods in the middle of the night. Dressed in an old rain coat tied with string, he would then split them into logs for the fire.
She won the love and respect of Britain during WWII when she refused to leave London during the Blitzkrieg... kept her children with her as well... enthusiastically taking target practice with a revolver given to her by Winston Churchill. When Buckingham Palace was bombed she made her now famous comment, "No I feel I can look the East End in the face."
Rest in peace dear lady.
