Retail - Future Sh** v. Best Buy
Today I received a flyer "Scan & Save". Yeah you are suppose to use their credit card. Then you get up to $500 in discounts. And you must do this between Apr 23 and 25th. (I am out of breath just thinking of this).
But the issue I have is - they appear to be opening another - "In Celebration of Our Markham East Grand Opening".
I remember when Best Buy took them out, the concept was (IS) - keep Future Shop open and "generate" fake competition.
I will say people must be that stupid to think they are different stores. I mean the fact the flyers are almost identical, the flyers use the same models (the same as used with Pizza Pizza promotions) and the prices are the same with the same promotions that appear each week, and last but not least, both share the crappy character terminal POS units.
Like are people that stupid? I think it is wasted energy. Not that they aren't a great company - they are still number one in most books for electronics, but to have such a path in Canada doesn't seem logical to me.
If they were to have a Future Shop as a main stream store and Best Buy comparable to say "Costco" or "Sams" I would say that might be ok (akin wo Walmart v. Sams). But this just seems moronic.
Loblaw - they had in the West end "Fortinos" - and yes the Italians were/(are) fooled. I still don't think seeing PC products they get the link... but that I can see as good branding. I haven't seen much more from them - no Chinese version of Loblaw. Must be something thought of before and has since fizzled (they have shut down the one east of myself. (FYI: When I ask people at my work they thought Fortinos was Italian and were surprised to know that it was Loblaw)
Their discounter is No Frills - someone today thought No Frills was a privately run company and unrelated to Loblaw - oh shock or whorer - I suppose if you can't figure out why most of the "yellow" no name products are the same in both, and that both stock President's Choice, then I suppose people still haven't caught on that Best Buy and Future Shop are the same ....
Question: How many people drive to both Future Shop and Best Buy to compare prices do you think?
SoB
(A: Trick question. Most Best Buys are "literally" and "seriously" around the corner from Future Shop - planned that way - am I crazy? Like isn't that insane? Such an expense. Now Circuit City is coming - I bet if they start building stores - you will see the Best Buy/Future Shop path axed -- but Best Buy might be holding onto a few extra leases they don't want -- perhaps Bankruptcy of Future Shop will follow??)

HA! Bubble bubble .. toil and trouble..
I laugh at those boomers with their café latté in one hand and yappin on their cell on the other, driving down the street in their SUVs and burning cash as they wait in traffic.. who think (principly because they own one) they can actually drive them..
I drive a 95 Mercury Sable (2nd) -- I owned a Topaz before (1st), both cooling problems to the hilt - they are guilty of substandard equipment - which never is improved during the life of the car (all the fixes) - but I still believe with domestics on features alone - Ford is the best - innovators. Stuff on my Sable - can't even get on the higher end Buick (the name escapes me). The non-luxury GM cars are so bloody old in designs - the interiors are junk. (FYI: I am not talking overall vehicle quality; I swear I will never buy a Ford, but when I go car hunting - it just amazes me how many good features you get with Ford that others do not offer; like adjusting pedals - like standard on a bunch of them - other makers don't even offer them; and yes we need them).
Anyways a lovely Lincoln or older style Caddy would suit me just fine. These days as I sit in traffic - I just want to enjoy the blossoms and listen to CBC Radio Two... in luxury..

NBR: The DangDang.com Craze
(bos - whats next? Hello Kitty? Har har har)
(Kastel.. pay courier.. not exactly but like Jobbers?)
SUSIE GHARIB: As Internet access spreads across China, online activities like cyber-dating and gaming are becoming popular. But Internet shopping is just starting to catch on among consumers. From Beijing, Celia Hatton looked at one online retailer that's leading the way in business to consumer shopping.
CELIA HATTON, NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT CORRESPONDENT: The staff can barely keep up with demand at this warehouse in South Beijing. Online orders for books, CDs and movies are flowing in from all over the country as Internet users catch on to DangDang.com, Mainland China's version of Amazon.com. Peggy Yu launched DangDang during the dot-com boom in 1999, using U.S. companies like Amazon as an example. Since then, the business has grown steadily, bringing in profits for the first time last year.
PEGGY YU, CO-PRESIDENT, DANGDANG.COM: We survived the bubble and we are still in business and growing strong.
HATTON: But DangDang's road to success hasn't been entirely smooth. China lacks a national courier service, making it difficult to deliver items. Customers here also prefer to examine products in person before buying. And when they do make a purchase, it's usually with cash. The company has overcome these obstacles with a unique business model which takes advantage of readily available resources. Orders are picked up from the central warehouse here in Beijing and are delivered to customers using bicycle couriers companies located across China. Customers have the option of giving cash payments directly to the bike couriers, who then wire the money back to DangDang headquarters. At DangDang's call center, however, it's clear that some consumers still haven't quite got the hang of online shopping. The staff here speak with hundreds of worried callers each day.
YU: About 45 percent of the phone calls and e-mails we receive at the customer service department are questions such as: How do I really shop online? What do you mean by shopping cart? Order submission, did you really get my order?
HATTON: People between the ages of 23 and 38 make up DangDang's core customer base, but critics argue that most people on Mainland China have no real reason to change the way they shop.
LONG JUNSHENG, PROFESSOR: They have time, they just don't have any money, so they (UNINTELLIGIBLE) of small shops and compare price to get a deal.
HATTON: In a country undergoing massive change, few can argue that online shopping doesn't have great potential for the future. More than 80 million people in China now use the Internet; second only to the United States. Maybe it's fitting then that the name DangDang was chosen partly because it sounds like a cash register ringing in sales. Celia Hatton, NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT, Beijing.
GHARIB: Well, Paul, if it takes off, just those bicycle couriers are going to be pedaling everywhere.
KANGAS: They will be. That's true.

Today whilst exercising.. (nothing as major as a heavy duty bike ride.. they had the CEO of EW Scripps - a cute little broadcasting/media play.
They are into newspapers, cable & satellite, interest in sports broadcasting, stations like Food TV and HGTV [their star of late] (US versions - not Canuck CRTC controlled knock offs) etc. I just love watching stories about companies like them - 126 years in business. Good growth. $105US mind you so it isn't on my radar. Nonetheless.
On the jobs, a minor comment, Joe asked about the want ads (good barometer on jobs) - and the CEO defintely felt there was a positive move with increased wanted ads of late.
Here is where I differ with Buffett on not splitting stocks. Yes they do (should) have zero impact to the value of the stock (though splits give a little pop up and consolidations cause a gush down), but the material impact is the small investor.
Perhaps at 3:1 or 4:1 split, I would be tempted into moving into this company. I dumped Time Warner of late - I think the growth for them is over. SSP would fit the bill - under the radar, diversified, reinventing themselves, great history and on and on..

Options.. What a difference a day makes..
I watched the ROB TV program.
My overall impression - Croft implied risk with options ("very risky") but seemed to dumb it down a bit - I expected a bit more "high risk" comments. My opinion.
Regardless a very good program and he was very knowledgeable. One thing that caught me off guard was how index traded options were treated tax wise in Canada.
Typically if I buy an option and then sell the option, the difference is either a capital gain or loss.
If I buy a call and then never sell and it ends up in the money, I will receive the underlying security - and I believe (not 100%) - that the gain or loss comes from when you sell the security. Buy 2 contracts of a stock for $300 and it stays in the money, I get 200 shares of the stock. I then sell the stock. The cost of purchase is $300+commish, and the proceeds of despotism, is the sell of the stock.
But what I did hear was - when I buy a index option, and it expires in the money, I don't get the underlying index obviously, but I get the cash equivalent and that is treated as interest income. Seems like a stupid technicality to me - if I sell on the day before it expires, it is treated as a capital gain.
Thanks Kastelco for the RRSP stuff. Oddly, Croft seemed to suggest though that the PUTS in an RSP were in second reading and not law yet. But other sites suggest they are allowed.
What Croft did say was basically what is quoted here from TaxTips.CA
-call options - these give the writer (seller) the obligation to sell the property at an agreed upon price should the purchaser of the option elect to purchase the property. Call options may be written (sold) as long as the underlying shares are held in the RRSP (covered call option). Call options also may be purchased inside an RRSP.
-put options - these give the writer (seller) the obligation to purchase the property at an agreed upon price should the purchaser of the option elect to sell the property. Put options may be written (sold), but they may not be purchased. However, when puts are sold, if the RRSP is required to have cash on deposit (margin) to cover the possibility of the puts being exercised, this would cause a problem because those assets may then be representing security for a loan. The Income Tax Act does not allow assets of an RRSP to be used as security for a loan. If assets inside an RRSP are determined to be security for a loan, then the market value of those assets will be included in the income of the RRSP holder for the year.
In any case, most brokerage firms do not allow the sale of put options inside an RRSP. Some brokerages do not even allow the sale of put options outside of an RRSP.
Croft basically said that PUTS are now allowed because during the tech wreck, RSP investors were unable to protect themselves. As for the inability to SELL PUTS in an RSP - my take on what he said - without the proper tools how effective can you be. In otherwords, to be a serious options trader you cannot use an RSP account.

Cookies and other lodged sharp foreign objects
I visited a site once and, it happened so quickly, something started to download and I accidently said YES to trust and boom I had a pretty bad ad product on my machine. Popups on my computer when I booted up amoungst other fun.
Without going into the gorry details on getting rid of it - it was BRUTAL. Registry searching; windows/system32 searching. Anyways it was non-stop - it was all over the place named differently.
I ended up buying Pest Patrol - the program is about $35US and comes with a year worth of updates. Basically like a VIRUS checker it runs in the background monitoring stuff placed in memory and cookies etc.
No they are not viri - to be caught by Norton or McAfee - these are things that are not considered viri but are troublesome. I found ad cookies from Sympatico.ca no less. Anyways the program scans specific directories (as you choose) and also the system registry for "programs" that start. Once found you can go to their site and see what this "candidate" does. And eliminate them. Once the main scan is done, the memory and cookie "patrols" work on a regular basis (no different than how a virus program works).
Caveat: I did have some issues in removing the main one I found (above). You see I removed it all manually then somehow it reappeared when I went back to the site (I am a masochist you know). I gave up wasting fixing it and bought this. This program did a good job overall but I did find a few KNOWN pieces of this software still on my system - perhaps they were just unharmful remains though. I was sort of expecting all parts to be removed - perhaps if I persued with the company tech team - but I had spent no less than about 2 hours EACH OCCURRENCE to fix this so I was in no mood to keep this going on.
I would, however, recommend this product for those people that visit lots of sites. I had a LOT of these cookies and other crap on my machine - now it is free - you can even have a vocal sound telling you that an ad cookie was removed.
My time is worth more than $35US. And it buys piece of mind too.
Blather ended..

EDIT: Mostly: Classical....
Mostly Classical site - is at 128bit rate - but other Digitally Imported stations are only 96k unless you pay.
Ari, the site owner says:
The reason that it is called "Mostly" Classical is because I wanted to introduce some more contemporary works as well, besides all the classical, since all of it flows well for the desired mood.
Wink...
Over a rainbow, why can't we???
RIMM oui. Question is - will they fall by themselves or will it be a broad based (commerical "bro-band"), decline with all techs. Techs are doing pretty good last few days though (at least what my eyes are seeing).
I would like to have things like this and QQQ PUTS at the ready for a quick buy but it takes a bit of work to review that each day.
Lots out there though to take advantage of...
Someone from parts unknown said something about the name of this forum Mostly: Classical.
[EDIT]Got chopped..
Listen Here to Mostly Classical...
(No foolin Beaver, I think FP has his head tied up with sensors and the music coming out is the digital version of his brain waves whilst he scans for stock picks...)
Darn good feeds for 96K - and I listen to that along with Digitially Imported (the company that runs MostlyClassical) all the time. My tastes anyways. If their middle plan $8.95 was around $5.95 I might bite. I use to be able to stream rip this stuff but they have imposed a password for the higher bit rates and there was an issue with that I think.
Cheers!

Hugely OT: Canadian Legal Account Types
(By all means point me to someplace here or SI if there are better suited forums).
This is leading up to a review of a number of brokerages I have queried based on some responses here - with some interesting twists.
Currently I have two joint accounts with TD. (Gov'ment cheese wants to know the "SIN" of the primary). Basically here is the setup:
Joint #1
Myself - (prim) MY SIN
My Wife -(sec)
My wife - (prim) HER SIN
Myself - (sec)
Before I use to have a single joint and separated (within Quicken - blah) all transactions between us. Except things like interest were mostly attributed to me due to the mere impossibility of splitting that. Plus we had a money market - it was split but hell of a lot of work.
So yes I have added commish costs but in the end, the ease of doing the taxes is worth the price - a lot cleaner. Lately the number of transaction has just exponentially increased - so at least I don't have to worry about all the numbers.
Here is the question:
What is the fundamental difference between a JOINT account and an INDIVIDUAL account with full POWER OF ATTORNEY?
My understanding is that I can give my wife a PoA and say "allowed to withdrawl money" or "not allowed to withdrawl money" - basically give her free reins to do anything.
To me the main difference I thought was during PROBATE period (in case of death). With a JOINT, the account is open and unaffected but any personal accounts - regardless of PoA would be frozen during probate.
Said in another way, are both accounts treated equally during a period where dealth of one has occurred, (able to trade; able to move out cash etc), or are there major or subtle differences between the two?
[EDIT: Death is the only case I can think of; but I suppose one could be arrested or "other"... "force majeure Jerry..."]
My gut says there are differences and Joint was the best method to go with.
Anybody versed in this subject? Have I made radically incorrect statements?
Most appreciated.

Hey Huesos - always look before you LEAP!
I have never looked at the payback of LEAPS - call them very long CALLS - but sniff sniff - smells similar to reg options. In Canada apparently they are the only kinds of "options" allowed in a retirement account (RRSP etc).
However, your statements seem to suggest "sure thing".
So today gold is up to $429 - you wait for a pullback - it ends at $432 - you wait - it ends at $435 - no pull back - you buy - it hits $440. It (GOLD/BARRICK) then starts to tumble. You are just slightly underwater - it continues down - even if the price of gold were to stay at $420 until Jan 2006, you have lost all your money if you never sell. Again it would be good to know the decay rate over such a period.
If you are a good guesser of direction and succeed a lot - then options might be your bag. You only need one or two great payouts to offset all the disasters.
The decay might not be as bad as short calls - typically if the call is in the money, the greatest payback is close to expiry. If you are out of the money and the stock stays out of the money, the option quickly loses most of its value and you have kissed your investment goodbye.
The most negative culprit of this stuff is the commissions eat a lot of money.
If you read my first posts (not too far back) you will see some option stuff posted.
A better strategy might be:
LONG on BARRICK (for example)
and
PUTS on BARRICK (LEAP PUTS - might not get the return that is expected)
If GOLD crashes, and Barrick follows suit, you won't lose as much - if GOLD continues higher as you believe - you lose the "insurance" you paid.
LEAPS to me are more akin to Warrants - as most Warrants are really out there. The risks are perhaps similar.
Forget your net worth - get like 1 or 2 contracts at most - and stick with a low number (even if a one time thing) like that until you can really make serious money and you CAN if you bet right. Bet wrong, and you lose money fast. Most investors/fund managers etc feel that capital is your most important asset - options are the greatest tools to erode that.
Then again, Sexton knows no LEAPS - and if the gov'ment cheese makers say they qualify in your retirement fund - they can't be all that bad... NON?
My deux cents...
Here's to your success.. let us know..
Cheers!

Totally Off Topic (Systems Survey..)
I am using Steam from Valve (Makers of Half-Life ...)
Anyways they requested myself to take a survey. I only asked what my NET connection was and then they scanned for all the various sundries.. CPU type & speed; OS type; Memory; Video; quantity of porn (somehow this part said 'mask overflow' for some reason)...
The link to the results (still being updated - currently 294,200 respondents) is:
http://steampowered.com/status/survey.html
What I found amazing - the AMD & INTEL are as close to 50/50 as you can get. The latest was "147,107" AMD and "147,072" Intel. No domination which I sort of found interesting. (should I be?) Could this be the reason why Intel trimmed their sales for Q1?
I am in the "0.22%" of the survey with the 2GB RAM.
Appears Nvidia leads all video cards shown (for non-other) but for whatever reason the OTHER is like 40%. (perhaps older cards I suspect). ATI still leads the pack on my machine for the only app to constantly GPF under XP Pro.
On a more important manner - I like CPST's recovery yesterday from below $3; plus the fact RRI is over $8.
Cheers all!
