Is Altria's 9% Monster Dividend Yield Safe?
Given Altria's (MO 2.73%) dividend, one can forgive casual observers for assuming Altria's cash yield is a dividend trap. The yield currently comes in at 9.1%, more than five times the average S&P 500 dividend return of around 1.75%.
Nonetheless, while Altria is a troubled stock on some levels, its more prominent issues do not relate to its finances. Considering the continuing long-term growth of its payout, income investors could profit from taking a position in this tobacco stock.
The state of Altria and its payout
Since the Surgeon General's report on the dangers of smoking came out in 1964, both governments and social groups have campaigned against tobacco. Moreover, Altria has faced numerous lawsuits as medical professionals tied millions of deaths to tobacco use. Settling these cases cost the company billions of dollars over the last few decades.
However, none of these challenges prevented Altria from offering more passive income. After approving a 4.4% dividend increase earlier this year, Altria's annual payout now stands at $3.76 per share.
Also, its annual payout has risen in 30 of the past 33 years. The only reason it is not a Dividend Aristocrat is that it cut its dividend in 2007 and 2008 amid the spinoffs of Kraft (now a part of Kraft Heinz) and Philip Morris International.

Rail services in the UK will be disrupted on Wednesday as around 9,000 train drivers in the Aslef union take part in another large-scale strike.
The 24-hour walkout, in a row over pay and conditions, will mean no trains on lines run by firms such as Northern, Avanti West Coast and Southeastern.
Others are running limited services, and the rail industry has warned passengers that trains run by unaffected operators will be busy.
Some stations will also be closed.

A Banking Crisis Looms
Authored by Tumas Malinen via The Epoch Times
My columns have turned rather apocalyptic of late, but for a valid reason. Just this week, we got confirmation that our financial system is, again, on the brink of collapse, when the Bank of England (BOE) was forced to enact, de facto, a bailout of the pension funds of the United Kingdom.
Snip
It is now clear that an outright financial collapse threatens all Western economies, because if pension funds, often considered very dull investors because of their risk-averse investing profile, face a threat to their insolvency, it can happen to any other financial institution. I consider that the banking sector will be the next in line.
Banking is a business of trust. If the trust in a bank or in the unlimited support of authorities for the bank, disappears, a bank run commences.
One of the most prominent scholars of financial crises, Gary B. Gorton, defines a financial crisis in his book “Misunderstanding Financial Crises: Why We Don’t See Them Coming” as “an event where holders of short-term debt issued by financial intermediaries withdraw en masse or refuse to renew their loans.”
In common language, Gorton says that during financial crises, a large number of holders of banks’ financial liabilities, such as deposits, want to cash out. Hence the name: a bank run.

U.S. Soccer investigation into women's game finds systemic abuse,
misconduct
The independent investigation into player abuse in women's professional soccer found a long list of failures by National Women's Soccer League coaches and executives, as well as the United States Soccer Federation itself.
"Our investigation has revealed a league in which abuse and misconduct -- verbal and emotional abuse and sexual misconduct -- had become systemic, spanning multiple teams, coaches, and victims," the report read. "Abuse in the NWSL is rooted in a deeper culture in women's soccer, beginning in youth leagues, that normalizes verbally abusive coaching and blurs boundaries between coaches and players."
The summary report, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, also details recommendations for the USSF to implement going forward. The investigation was conducted by former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, on behalf of the USSF.

'Confident' Race Thompson Continues Growing His Game
10/03/2022
Relationships matter. Race Thompson understands that, which is why, when it comes down to it, the Indiana senior forward says, he wants to be remembered most of all as "a great teammate, a good friend."
And then, "Someone who would do anything to win a game."
And finally, "All the good stuff. That's really it. That's all I could ask for."
Much has been asked of Thompson during his six Cream 'n Crimson seasons. He's endured injuries, disappointments, a losing season and a coaching change. He's persevered, grown his game from inside banger to versatile force who can bring the ball up the court, pass, hit the occasional three-pointer, serve as an all-around complement to All-America teammate Trayce Jackson-Davis and ...
Help the Hoosiers return to NCAA tourney participation.
Last season, Thompson averaged 11.1 points and 7.5 rebounds, 7.9 rebounds in Big Ten games. He added 50 assists and 24 blocks.

UN urges FED to pause interest rate hikes on global recession fears
October 3, 5:04 pm
The Federal Reserve and other major central banks risk triggering
a painful global recession followed by a period of stagnation with such aggressive interest rate increases, a United Nations agency warned Monday.
in its annual report on the global economic outlook, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said the interest rate increases and austerity policies in wealthy nations represented an "imprudent gamble" that risked backfiring, particularly on lower-income nations.
"There’s still time to step back from the edge of recession," UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan said. "We have the tools to calm inflation and support all vulnerable groups. But the current course of action is hurting the most vulnerable, especially in developing countries and risks tipping the world into a global recession."
The agency estimated that a percentage point increase in the Fed's benchmark federal funds rate reduces the economic output in other wealthy nations by about 0.5%, and in poor countries by about 0.8% over the next three years. Lower-income nations will already see economic output tumbled by about $360 billion over the next three years as a result of the Fed's rate increases so far this year.
"Excessive monetary tightening could usher in a period of stagnation and economic instability," the UNCTAD said in a statement accompanying the report. "Any belief that they (central banks) will be able to bring down prices by relying on higher interest rates without generating a recession is, the report suggests, an imprudent gamble."
The Federal Reserve has embarked on one of the fastest courses in history to raise borrowing costs and slow the economy.
Officials last week approved a third consecutive 75-basis-point rate hike, lifting the federal funds rate to a range of 3.0% to 3.25% — near restrictive levels — and indicated that more super-sized increases are coming.
