It's A Car! It's An Egg! No, It's A Twike!

EDINA, Minn. (WCCO) ― If you see something driving down the street that compact and looks a little bit like a gigantic, mobile egg, you're probably gazing upon a Twike.
The odds of seeing one in the Twin Cities aren't particularly high, though. There are only three of them in the area, and all three are owned by one Edina, Minn. man.
"This is one of 20 in the USA," said Carl Gulbronson, owner of an Edina Bike and Sport. "People will follow you to your driveway and they'll say, 'I'm not stalking you, please tell me about it'"
Many find the most surprising feature is that bicycle pedals are inside.
"Right now, I am pedaling and I'm getting an aerobic workout," Gulbronson said.
Due to vehicle performance limits, Carl pedals less than 10 percent of the time. The vehicle's top speed is 60 miles per hour, so it can drive on the freeway.
"The beauty is that is accelerates to 35 mph at the same rate that a regular car can, so I'm not slowing anyone down," said Gulbronson.
The driver uses an extension cord and plugs it in each night to get 40 miles of driving range the next day. The German-made vehicle is about $35,000, but Gulbronson said the weak dollar has made it more expensive in recent years.
A different electric vehicle with a far lower sticker-shock value is the Zap from China. It's a mini-pickup truck that costs about $12,000.
Gulbronson actually sells the Zap. Its demand is increasing with the skyrocketing gas prices, but he also admits the very pricey Twike will likely remain a novelty.
"Don't get an electric vehicle unless you like the attention," he cautioned.
The Twike has the horsepower of the typical lawnmower. There are a few hundred of them in Europe.

Evening News (WHAS11) - What if you went from spending $60 to fill up your car to less than a dollar? It's possible with the Zap car.
Zap Xebra
The vehicle is all electric and it's making its way into Kentuckiana.
WHAS11's Renee Murphy checks it out to see if it's really a Smart Savings.
Its not much to look at, but it could save you money. Larry Cottingham is opening Kentucky’s first all electric car dealership in Shepherdsville.
“Under the hood we have a pretty simple configuration you have 6 basic batteries you can buy at any auto parts store, 5 horse power motor a gear box and two computers,” says Cottingham.
The all electric car runs anywhere from $13,000 to $60,000. The more expensive high end prototypes won't be out for a few years, but they are slated to get 325 miles per charge.
The Zap Xebra has three wheels. The federal government technically recognizes it as a motorcycle. The Zap cars have no emissions.
Just plug it to any standard outlet, charge it up and you're off.
So, Renee tried it out. She says its no Mercedes, the wheel is a little hard to turn, you have to mash down on the pedals and once you get going, its a little loud.
She says it would only be an option for a family’s second car or maybe something for a teen driver. But then you have to factor in the safety. Remember it’s basically a motorcycle that can only get you around town.
These little electric cars are legal in Indiana on city streets, but not the interstate.
So far, the cars are not allowed on any Kentucky roads. There is a petition online right now to change that.
So is it a smart savings? That’s for you to decide.
We should be swinging a dollar by now...
Thanks, We'll put that link right on top...

Hybrid RSS NEWS - Ohio lawmakers OK electric 3-wheelers
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The state Legislature has approved another option for Ohioans looking to spend less on gasoline.
A massive spending bill that cleared the Ohio House and Senate on Tuesday includes language opening Ohio roads to electric vehicles that resemble small cars with only three wheels.
Rechargeable three-wheelers such as the Zap Xebra (ZEE’-bruh) and the Myers Motors NmG — which stands for “No more Gas” — are currently illegal in Ohio. The legislation would allow them to be registered as motorcycles.
While Gov. Ted Strickland plans to veto some portions of the $1.3 funding billion bill, his spokesman says Strickland supports the electric vehicles and will leave that provision alone.-- ECOmph.

RSS NEWS - ZAP: Former President of Pirelli Tire North America Asks Corporate America to "Walk the Talk" - Guy Mannino, former president and CEO of Pirelli Tire North America (PTNA), at least agrees with the current presidential candidates on one thing... it's time for a change. In his own words, Mannino is "calling on all retired and current CEOs of corporate America to join with me and just stop talking 'green' and start driving 'green'!"
"Now is the time for corporate America, as well as Federal, State and local governments, to take action and proclaim our independence from oil and gas," he continues. "Now is the time for electric vehicles that lower fuel costs, as well as combat pollution and global warming."
Strange for a man who has spent the better part of the past 25 years driving high-performance cars on road and track.
Mannino, a veteran executive with 28 years of international sales, marketing and manufacturing experience, has a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rome and a Masters in e-Business. Mannino's career with Pirelli spanned three continents (Europe, South America and North America) where he managed multi-million-dollar investment projects, including site definitions for manufacturing, warehousing and distribution centers. His tenure at PTNA was highlighted by skyrocketing sales and a strong brand image. In addition, Mannino developed outstanding relationships with state and local governments.
Mannino's commitment to "clean and green technology" is so strong that heleft Pirelli last fall to found Verdek, a consulting and trading company with corporate headquarters in Rome and offices in Connecticut and Rome, Italy. Verdek-EV, the e-commerce division, was created to market and sella line of ZAP electric vehicles and portable energy devices to help businesses and consumers become more efficient.
"We need to stop blaming the oil companies and start taking action ourselves," commented Mannino. "If every corporate fleet in America would make the decision to convert 20% of their fleets to electric, the impact would be significant and immediate."
Based in Santa Rosa, Calif., ZAP (OTCBB: ZAAP) stands for 'Zero Air Pollution' and offers a full line of Xebra electric cars and trucks, Zapino scooters and off-road vehicles, as well as charging accessories.
"We fully agreed that the time is now to make the switch from gas to electric," said ZAP CEO Steven Schneider. "This is the easiest way to start saving money on gas and, at the same time, helping the environment."
"I have done the research and am convinced that the technology is here; theprice point is right," states Mannino. "ZAP Xebras and the Zapino aretruly cost-competitive alternatives that can meet a myriad of fleet and corporate applications today."

ZAP Acquires Interest in Electric Wheel Motor Company
SANTA ROSA, CA, - Electric transportation pioneer ZAP (OTC BB:ZAAP.OB) announced today that it has acquired an ownership interest in an electric motor company to develop and manufacture a new line of wheel motors for future vehicle developments and global distribution.
Under the agreement, ZAP is collaborating and investing in the development of a line of wheel motors for various types of electric vehicles, from an electric bike or scooter to an electric car. ZAP and its partner have also agreed to work together on the optimum process for manufacturing all motors and controllers. ZAP has been granted exclusive rights to the wheel motors under the agreement for international distribution.
"So many have focused on batteries as a way to improve the performance of electric vehicles, but wheel motors are truly a giant leap forward," said Gary Starr, who manages product development for ZAP. "Today's ZAP wheel motor vehicles can nearly double the range of similar vehicles we brought to market ten years ago."
ZAP and their partner expect to increase the power, performance and efficiency of wheel motors through the use of a proprietary, brushless, multi-pole wheel-motor technology. ZAP is developing a 7000-watt wheel motor for larger vehicle applications.
ZAP was one of the first electric vehicle companies to market wheel motor powered vehicles with its ZAPPY3 electric scooter, which uses a 350-watt motor. Last year, ZAP introduced the Zapino scooter with its 3000-watt wheel motor, which ZAP says is one of the most powerful systems available on the market today.
Wheel motors can significantly increase the power-to-weight ratio of electric drivetrains. Having motors built into the wheels decreases the weight, eliminates the transmission, and saves space inside the vehicle for more battery capacity and features. Eliminating a chain or belt transmission increases the efficiency and can result in less noise, vibration and overall maintenance.

Ford reportedly working on compressed air powertrain
28th May 2008
An article on alternative fuels in the Toronto Globe & Mail reports that the MDI compressed air car being worked on by Tata Motors uses an onboard heater to expand the volume of compressed air in the car’s tank when the vehicle exceeds 35 mph; the heater would reportedly use an unspecified fossil or biofuel. The car's top speed will be about 150 km/h, and it can be driven about 1,300 km with the heater running and 60 km on compressed air alone, according to a spokesman for MDI.
The same article asserts that engineers at Ford Motor Company are collaborating with engineers at the University of California, Los Angeles, on an air-hybrid design.

Electric Car Firm ZAP Sparks China Earthquake Relief Fund With $50,000 Donation
ZAP Challenges Others to Match or Exceed Its $50,000 Donation
May 15, 2008: 08:06 PM EST
California electric car pioneer ZAP (OTCBB: ZAAP) is starting a relief fund with the factory for its Xebra electric car and truck to aid victims of the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan, China.
ZAP is asking the public and Corporate America to make donations to assist the relief efforts in China. ZAP will match donations up to $50,000 to the American Red Cross.
ZAP CEO Steve Schneider said that one of the factories that builds electric vehicles for ZAP is very close to the epicenter of the 7.9 magnitude quake. Chinese authorities estimate the death toll could reach 50,000.
"Mr. Lu, the President of the Shandong Jindalu Xebra factory, told us the government was asking for assistance, so we responded quickly," said Schneider. "ZAP has a very special relationship with China and its partners and we wanted to help."
Others are stepping forward to help with Earthquake Relief. China's most famous athlete, NBA star Yao Ming, was planning to donate $285,000 to the relief effort.
Investors who would like to make stock donations to benefit the Sichuan Earthquake relief can do so through a program with the American Red Cross (https://www.redcross.org/donate/donatestock.html), similar to a program that helped raise funds for the Katrina Hurricane Relief and others. ZAP announced arrangements with leading discount stock brokerage firm, Muriel Siebert & Co., Inc., a subsidiary of Siebert Financial Corp. (SIEB), whereby, in order to maximize the value of contributions, Siebert will eliminate commission charges on stock donated to the American Red Cross for this effort. Donors do not need Siebert accounts and may call John Lally or Carol Liversedge at 800-728-3352 for more information.
Muriel Siebert, chairwoman, president and CEO, said, "We are honored and delighted to help."
ZAP and its partners are the first automotive venture to design a vehicle and have it manufactured by an automaker in China for export to the United States; and it's electric. ZAP has contracted electric vehicle production with factories in five different cities in China.
According to ZAP Founder Gary Starr, "Mr. Lu has been a leader in social responsibility by pioneering with ZAP in the manufacturing of one of the world's first cost-effective electric vehicles."
Starr said that the Xebra factory has made several initiatives in support of the environment and to improve employee relations. As part of its commitment to fight global warming with ZAP, the factory has planted 1000 trees at a park nearby. The factory has also worked to meet the highest standards for employee relations in China. All workers have health insurance, unemployment insurance and retirement insurance. They are also entitled to overtime if they work more than eight hours in a day and are served complimentary meals by the factory. The factory relocated last year to a modernized production facility.

Save Gas With ZAP Electric Car in California's Central Valley
May 14, 2008: 09:30 AM EST
A new kind of electric car and truck are taking gas prices head-on in California's Central Valley. The gas-free vehicles are from California automaker ZAP (OTCBB: ZAAP) and are now available in Visalia.
Mike Brackett is opening the new dealership with sales and service for the ZAP Xebra. This week he plans to roll the Xebra out at the annual Porterville Fair, May 14-18 in nearby Porterville, California.
ZAP says record gas prices are driving up sales for the Xebra. As of April 18, 2008, ZAP reported orders in hand of $6.8 million for the city-speed sedan and truck.
Brackett says he traded in his Lamborghini for a ZAP car and hasn't filled up with gas since. The cars and trucks sell for about $11,000 to $12,000 and come in bright colors. Brackett has sold four vehicles so far and warns people to prepare to be noticed. The unique design is an attention-grabber as you drive around town. ZAP says they wanted the Xebra to be unusual looking because electric cars are different from gasoline.
Brackett's dealership was the focus of a recent FOX TV news segment with local affiliate KMPH. View the story and online video at the link below.

Electric cars like the ZAP Xebra are much more quiet in operation than normal ones. While it is easy to fill up your gas car today for $60 or more, it costs about 60 cents to recharge a ZAP Xebra, which can save you hundreds of dollars per year on your fuel bill. You can avoid the gas station altogether and recharge at any normal household 110-volt outlet. Without gasoline, there is no need for oil changes, tune-ups or smog checks. Speaking of smog, electric vehicles reduce automotive emissions by more than 90 percent compared to gas, according to studies by the California Air Resources Board.
The Xebra was designed for city-speed driving up to 40 MPH. ZAP says its customers are homeowners with more than one car or businesses, governments and other entities that operate fleets of vehicles.

ZAP Launches Sale of Plug-In Hybrid Electric Car, Tests Show up to 120 Miles per Gallon
SANTA ROSA, CA is now offering plug-in hybrid conversion systems for the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape Hybrid through a collaboration agreement with Hybrids Plus.
Hybrid vehicles retrofitted with systems from Hybrids Plus of Boulder, Colorado can achieve a significantly greater fuel economy. In tests these systems increased hybrid fuel economy up to 120 miles per gallon in the city and up to 90 mpg on the highway. The cost for the conversion ranges from $24,000 to $36,000 depending on the vehicle and size of battery pack.
All gasoline electric hybrids currently produced by major automakers today are essentially gasoline-powered vehicles. They reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency compared to conventional cars, however they are fueled exclusively by gasoline. The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) will allow the owner to charge their vehicle from a normal household wall outlet. By integrating a larger battery pack and a plug-in charging system, it becomes a new vehicle drawing energy from two fuel sources.
Hybrids Plus has sold PHEV systems to private individuals, fleets, power companies, and governmental entities. Deliveries can be provided in approximately four weeks from the initial order.
"This is a natural extension of our growth plans," said Hybrids Plus CEO Carl Lawrence. "ZAP has sold more city speed electric vehicles than any other company and has an established, growing dealer network that can provide sales and service for our vehicles."
"This collaboration allows more hybrid owners to have the most efficient vehicles on the road today," said ZAP CEO Steve Schneider. "ZAP dealers are preparing to offer a new level of service in the coming years involving mass-market hybrid and electric cars from Detroit Electric, so experience with plug-in hybrids can accelerate this process."
