My guess is that Pantera thought CELG was a buy here but what do I know?
I would love to know what he is thinking about stocks like FTO, DO, and if he likes RIG better these days. Maybe one of these days we will get lucky and hear from him. Soon, I hope.
Sounds like you are doing great, cy. I caught the CELG reco too but I have held some for awhile. I bought some more today but don't know how long I'll hold this second position. I remember it to be a fav of Pantera's. Speaking of Pantera, it would be great to hear from him. I hope he is doing ok.
cy, still waiting on POT? One of the guys at Fast Money likes it. Actually, I think two of them do. Don't know when they reco getting off the ride but it was touted as a play yesterday.
It looks like CELG is crawling back a bit from its hole.
I believe that the company decides if the stock dividend is a taxable event. At least this is what Schwab told me yesterday on a similar situation. The stock then has a taxable basis so you can sell the shares at a gain or loss.
Thank you!
Not so much a find. It said he speaks from experience. Not sure if he wrote the book quickly after finding out he was ripped off, (published in 2008) or if he wrote it beforehand.
AD, In the article you referenced, I liked the part where the professor who wrote the book in how not to be duped was one of Bernie Madoff's investors.
if the rumor is true!
Baletwine on Ico's thread wrote this earlier:
<<11:11 Market chatter that govt requesting delivery of stock certificates held by AIG, thus preventing short-sellers from borrowing the shares; rumor is contributing to buy action/short-covering in market today>>
It was my understanding that last fall the end of trading for QQQQ, SPY and the like was changed to 4 PM. I don't trade these so I couldn't say for sure.
Your purchase of CYMI is paying off nicely. I just learned yesterday about the higher lazer utilization rates - which bodes well for the semis.
Another botch job in the works for SNDK. This will take awhile. I'm surprised it has taken this long to float another rumor. I guess it will eventually come to fruition.
thanks phill
What's up with SNDK?
At this rate we could blow past spx 750.
I love it!!! LOL
I was just wondering if you were still interested in solars, Joe. LDK keeps disappointing however. It might belong in the trash heap.
Plan it for the next meeting and you can clean up on the movie rights.
If the uptick rule has little effect, it is then a perfect thing to re-enact to show they are doing something. I don't hear much about naked shorting except from the usual suspects (deep capture et al).
After a particularly profitable day in the markets, Zeev would comment on having a fine Lafite to celebrate. I have a fine Shiraz in my glass and I raise it to the warmth and kindness of his soul. So sad for the world to lose such a good person. We are all the better for knowing him.
One of my favorites.
I thought I read that too -- about long levered ETFs having less slippage than their short counterparts.
Since I own some QLD that I have held for more than overnight, I figured I should do a little math to see what kind of trouble I am getting myself into and how much of a sucker I am. So far, in spot checking various days in the recent past, I don't see that much of a problem. If anything, most of the the downside days have not been as bad when compared to Aug 15th. Maybe this is the weakness in my analysis as when I compare Nov 21st to March 9th I get a huge discrepancy.
I suspect if/when volitility comes down with a rebounding market, the QLD could have a bit more trouble keeping up with 2X, but a 15% haircut seems like a lot.
For example:
Comparing Aug 15 '08 close with Nov 21st close
NDX was 1974 to 1086; a loss of 45%
QLD was 84 to 22.25; a loss of 74%
Comparing Aug 15 '08 close with Mar 9 '09 close
NDX was 1974 to 1044; a loss of 47%
QLD was 84 to 19.60; a loss of 77%
Comparing Nov 21st close with Jan 2, 09 close
NDX was 1086 to 1264; a gain of 16.39%
QLD was 22.25 to 29.26; a gain of 31.51%
Comparing Nov 21st close with Mar 9, 09 close
NDX was 1086 to 1044; a loss of 3.87%
QLD was 22.25 to 19.60; a loss of 11.91% (ouch - making up for prior lags?)
Comparing Jan 2'09 with Feb 10
NDX was 1264 to 1229; a loss of 2.77%
QLD was 29.26 to 27.58; a loss of 5.74%
Comparing Jan 2'09 with March 9
NDX was 1264 to 1044; a loss of 17%
QLD was 29.26 to 19.60; a loss of 33%
I did not include any dividends, which are pretty small anyway.
If I am missing anything, I would love for someone to point it out to me.
I think Zeev would want us to make a lot of money and proclaim "What a country!!!" We could also donate a portion of our profits to his favorite charity.
According to Faber apparently. I have no $ in the game. It was just another example of the stacked deck so to speak.
Think there is a news leak on ROH?
I can't begin to say how envious I am. Enjoy your summit trip. Maybe the markets will act in concert.
Is Earlene in the SI swim issue too?
When you pair "market risk" and "upside", it made me think that the risk is increasing in the market - which makes me think of the $VIX and with increased volitility typically meaning selling. But the rest of your sentence didn't seem to indicate that, hence my confusion......
Hey, aren't you near a beach somewhere?
Not sure what you mean, gtober, although it looks as though Joe and JimQ figured it out. Are you saying the least resistance is to the upside? If yes, that what I'm thinking too. But in this market things turn on a dime.
Anyone playing BBBB? It's an old Zeev play and seeing a bit of lift off. Might be a good future short - fill the gap play.
Hi Newly, I'm hanging in there and starting to get back more into what is going on in the markets. Family obligations basically kept me away for most of December and I enjoyed the break. I'm glad to hear that you are still having a blast on your travels.
I was not the one that mentioned Cloudcroft, as I never heard of it. However, I was going suggest someplace I read about - the wildflowers in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park - 90 miles east of San Diego. If they get enough rains (and I think they might be) then the flowers in March are said to be exceptional. Maybe someone here on the thread can tell you more.
It looks as though I might try a little road trip too - but probably on some snowy roads into CO. We hope to do a little skiing. I hope I can handle the altitude.....
Happy trading to you too - whenever you are able to connect!
Hey Newly, still trading AAPL? It looks as though it might get to 100 today.
Yes, too long. Lots of excuses but it is good to be back with the occassional post.
It looks like Mosis wants to come out in force. Its about that time you know,
I read that Meridith Whitney put BAC on her survivor list.
Don't be sorry about CFCpB! Besides, it has already come up off its day's lows. I didn't buy that much and I knew the risk. So don't worry and keep the creative ideas going.
Hey gt, I think it was you that had the covered call on ISRG. Since it seems you might be in the Hawaiian Islands (wow, that sounds soooo good) perhaps you missed the old news resurfacing on JNJ's supposed interest. The rumors were floated again two days ago.
Spoke to a commercial real estate broker buddy last night. Listings are way down, but financing availability has improved. The lack of activity seems to stem from everyone waiting for that better price. At least here in the SF Bay area.
It seems that many of these resets could be quite favorable to the borrowers with the decrease in rates. However, if they have not been paying any principal and that starts then the people who couldn't afford it from the get go still can't afford it.....
Same story.
