ATi RD580 chipset preview (Manta reference board)
Smokin'! OC'd to 1600MHz+ HTT!

So, anyone heard anything on the Horus demo?
wbmw - What thermal virus? Prime95? F@H? UD/grid? ;)
Keith - Considering they've certainly seen both roadmaps, I like the sound of that!
Paul
cd, wbmw - and if I'm not mistaken, the CD suffix denotes a different family or stepping(?), which though it's "lower" and seems counterintuitive, does not necessarily mean an earlier one.

Samsung makes headway in handset market with OneNAND flash, introduces 90nm 512Mbit mobile DRAM
Latest news
Press release; Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Friday 11 November 2005]
Samsung Electronics reported that its production volume of OneNAND flash has jumped by 89% over the past four month, and the company is producing about 2.9 billion megabits per month. In addition, Samsung announced its has started mass producing 90nm-made 512Mbit mobile DRAM.
According to the company, OneNAND is a fusion chip that features a single-level-cell NAND core with SRAM and logic elements to emulate a NOR flash interface. OneNAND provides a sustained data "read" speed of 108 MB/s, four times faster than conventional NAND flash memory, and a "write" speed of 10 MB/s, more than 60 times faster than multi-level-cell NOR Flash memory.
Samsung has initially targeted the handset market with the fusion chip, and three of the top five wireless equipment manufacturers have deployed OneNAND flash in their handsets, Samsung said.
In line with its deployment of OneNAND flash for the mobile market, Samsung recently also announced it has started to mass produce 90nm-made 512Mbit DRAM for mobile products. The company can also provide 1Gbit capacities when two 512Mbit chips are stacked together in a dual-die package
The 512Mbit mobile DRAM chip transmits data in a 32-bit stream and can process it at 1.3GB per second, and the company stated the memory can enhance the performance of managing richly textured images on handsets, as well as lowering overall power consumption.
wbmw - The problem with your datapoints is that they're all at least 2 months old, except for that last one.
What seems to be happening is that in the past few weeks, new processors are appearing that are doing much better, 2.7-2.8GHz at stock Vcore is fast becoming the norm.
Paul
wbmw - No, no measurements so to speak. But there is a lot of talk around of better OC peak results, many even at stock Vcore. And something is new about at least one A64, the OPN prefix has changed from ADA to ADV.(Enough different for BIOS mods)

Even ol' Ed at overclockers suspects that AMD is doing something better, and he has not been an AMD fanboy by any stretch, and has a pretty close finger on the pulse of the OC community.

What To Do?
Gee, I don't know. :)
If you think this really is a case of cherry-picked processors/cherry-picked manufacturing, this may be the deal of a long time, even at inflated prices.
On the other hand, if you think AMD is just getting better at this, these improvements ought to spread to the whole processor line eventually, and/or AMD will put out more Opteron processors and retail prices will drop.
If you put a gun to my head, I'd say the latter, but I could be wrong.
What won't be wrong is all of us keeping a daily eye on this for a while. After all, it's the only game in town at the moment.
Ed
Granted, that doesn't mean they will introduce higher binned CPUs, but it does mean it'll be easier for them to do if they choose to than it was before.
Paul
tecate - I have little doubt that WiMax will happen, but whether it becomes a force to be reckoned with in the market remains to be seen. Lotsa cooks in the internet access soup, it's a jungle out there.
Folks once thought that ISDN and Rambus were "coming", but that didn't quite happen. Nothing is certain in this industry until it's already happened.
Intel gains advantage over AMD in flash?
Since AMD isn't in NAND, seems like a bit of a moot point, doesn't it?
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=27633
IGPs starting to come on strong.
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2603
wbmw - Could be that they're yielding and binning much nicer than you suspect.
Strange choice of words on Tech Reports' part. AMDzone didn't describe it that way.
Yeah, what a load of hooey! Software and peripherals, eh? And all those Dell customers are buying those processors to make pendants, right? Bookmarks? Paperweights?
Keith - Nothing new for Hans, I can't remember the last time he was positive on AMD.
bobs10 - Not to nitpick, but there is a convention when you're quoting someone to italicize and quote their text. While I can always figure out what you're saying, sometimes it takes a while to get down on the page to what you are actually saying, not that to which you are responding, and it often leads me to think, "What on earth - is that bobs10 talking? Then I'll finally get down to the "...Me" and it'll start to come together.
But it would certainly save me some effort comprehending your posts, if you know what I mean. :)
Paul
It certainly could be a case of CYA re: a lawsuit.
Thanks, gollem! Sometimes I can gist from the German I know, but that can also lead one far astray...
Paul
Just because!!
Socket F appears?
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/11/08/amd_socket_f_spied/
Looks oddly similar to socket 775. Is that Dutch? Can someone translate or gist? gollem?
Paul
Keith - re: PC marketshare graph - when did AMD kick off their lawsuit? Wasn't it June-ish?
Hmmm....
"... On June 27, 2005, AMD filed an antitrust lawsuit against Intel Corporation in U.S. federal district court for the district of ... "
Paul
:D Opteron 165 shipping - attractive price!

It'd be interesting to see this developed and integrated into AMD chips and connections in the future.

BUGGI1000 - re: "Research and development expenses in the third quarter of 2005 increased from the second quarter of 2005 primarily due to an increase in corporate bonus and profit sharing expense payable to research and development personnel"
Good to see that they're not just rewarding salespeople, but also those laying the foundations for their future! It may "hurt" us now, but if it helps secure the future...
Paul
highlandpk - Entirely possible. eom
wbmw - re: "It just seems to me that in terms of roadmap goals, Intel's has set theirs far higher."
Hard to say, since there's so little public info about AMD's roadmap at this point.
wbmw - If it's adequate to get the job done, that would be quite impressive, and likely very profitable!
smooth - Montecito is a relatively well-defined entity, supposedly quite far along in development, whereas as K10 is a total unknown. Very different situations.
Best to reserve your judgement until you see what replaces K10, if in fact that is what happens. It's not like we've heard any official word from AMD on it, unlike the Intel situation.
wbmw- Hard to get too excited(for now) without knowing what AMD is really planning and with no clue of what K10 was. AMD seems to be keeping the cards close to the chest for now.
Paul
Chris - I was wondering too, until it just occurred to me-
"Sorry If Already Posted"
:p
Paul
"People are much more knowledgable now. Incidently, he wants to stick with Intel, too."
Apparently not.
mmoy - Yes, the apparent correlation is very interesting!

drjohn has a good point, Dell has thousands of vendors I'm sure, and the problem part could be anything.
Ah - understood. eom
avatar - ROFL!
I agree, I think they'll do very well, it sounds like flash may be less of a drag, and CPUs are growing nicely. With the beginning of some marketing and channel efforts, though, I'm wondering if Q1 may be even more impressive YOY, if even still down from Q4.
Paul
Keith - re: "and IBM will actually prove that in the not-too-distant future."
Could you expand?
Paul
Keith - Thanks for the clarification, I guess I had a preconceived notion of what spam is and didn't look into IH's definition enough.
Paul
CJ, tecate - The closeset relationship(s) I have with AMD is owning some stock, building my PCs with their processors and working on some handheld devices with embedded AMD Elan 486 processors.
