Niobium
Pre-publication offer for The Economics of Niobium, 11th edition
The Economics of Niobium, 11th edition 2009
Niobium occurs in a number of minerals and has a wide variety of applications. By far the largest part of the market, around 90%, is for niobium that is derived from the mineral pyrochlore and converted to HSLA ferro-niobium for use in steelmaking. There are currently only three significant suppliers to this market: CBMM and Catal?o, in Brazil, and Niobec, in Canada. CBMM is the largest by a considerable margin and has become much bigger in the last few years. Its expansion still has some way to go. The company's production of ferro-niobium is set to rise from 85,000t in 2008, to 0.1Mt in 2009 and to 0.15Mtpy by 2013. Catal?o and Niobec, too, are expanding their production capabilities.
CBMM's dominance of the market, and its clear intention of retaining that position, is a strong disincentive to the development of new pyrochlore operations. The only two projects that seem likely to be brought into production are Niocan, in Canada, which will not be commercialised in the near future and Kanyika, in Malawi, which is due on-stream in 2011 for the production of ferro-niobium, in addition to niobium and tantalum oxides, uranium and zircon. Small quantities of niobium will also be produced from the Dubbo project in Australia.
Ferro-niobium is not used in all types of steel, and it has substitutes, but the overall rise in global steel production, coupled with the increasing use of stainless, HSLA and other niobium-containing steels, has resulted in strong growth in consumption in recent years.
Robust demand for ferro-niobium has put some pressure on prices, although the market has historically shown a fairly high degree of stability. The spot market accounts for only about 5% of ferro-niobium sales but the large increases in spot prices that took place from 2006 ? they had doubled by March 2008 ? have carried over into the long-term contract market. The average value of US ferro-niobium imports, which was around US$8,500/t during the first half of the decade, passed US$9,100/t in 2006 and reached nearly US$14,200/t in 2007. The benchmark contract price for Brazilian ferro-niobium announced for the fourth quarter of 2008 was 5-12% higher than in the previous period, at US$43-46/kg contained Nb.
In late 2008, the niobium industry seemed confident of continuing strong market conditions. There are, however, some dark clouds on the horizon. In November 2008 the IMF cut its forecast of global economic growth for 2009 from 3% to 2.2% and predicted a contraction in the advanced economies. Even in China, growth is set to slip back into single digits. Similarly, global steel output rose by 4.6% in the first nine months of the year. That is somewhat below the rates of increase that have been typical during most of the 2000s.

Iamgold (IMG.TO) can double the reserves at its Niobec niobium mine in Quebec using a paste backfill system to extract more ore, the Canadian company said on Monday.
It also announced cost-cutting measures at mines in Mali and Botswana.
Iamgold said a feasibility study had estimated capital costs of C$8 million to implement the Niobec plan, which would nearly double the mine's life to 20 years at current mining rates. The plan has not yet been approved by the company's board of directors, it said.
Currently, the company leaves ore grade material in the mine as supports as it moves to deeper levels. By backfilling to build supports, Iamgold will be able to extract more than 90 percent of the ore, rather than the 40 percent it currently gets, it said.
Niobium is typically used in steel alloys and jewelry.
The mine, located just outside Chicoutimi, Quebec, produces about 10 percent of world niobium consumption, Iamgold says. Daily milling capacity is 4,500 tonnes.
Iamgold also said it was hiring a new mining contractor at its 40-percent-owned Yatela gold mine in Mali and would take over mining operations at its fully-owned Mupane mine in Botswana from the current contractor.

Nov 04, 2008 (The West Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- MTGRF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Chinese groups have moved to acquire up to 40% of Western Australian iron ore miners Mount Gibson Iron and Gindalbie Metals. Shougang Concord and APAC Resources will help Mount Gibson raise $A162.5m at $A0.60 a share to increase their joint holding to 40.46%. Mount Gibson will sell its ore to the two groups at a 55% discount to the benchmark price for the remainder of 2008. Anshan Iron & Steel is to increase its stake in Gindalbie to between 30% and 40% through a $A162.06m share issue. The deals must be approved by the Foreign Investment Review Board and other authorities.
Here's a repost from the SRSR board that makes the statement that there is $$$ out there to invest in a JV with SRSR.
Chinese using global crisis to invest in raw materials

The Chinese are expected to use the global financial crisis to secure stakes in WA mining companies. (ABC: Diane Bain)
A stock market analyst says the global economic crisis is likely to encourage Chinese investment in some of the state's junior miners.
In September last year Gindalbie and Ansteel signed a 50-50 joint venture deal to develop the Karara Iron Ore project.
The Chinese have already made three payments for the project but Gindalbie's Chairman George Jones says it now wants to purchase shares in the company in lieu of the final payment.
"What that means is that the Karara joint venture will then be fully funded as to equity," he said.
"It's been received by the Gindalbie board. I personally favour it as being out of debt in these markets is very attractive."
Mr Jones says the deal would have wide ranging benefits for the whole state.
"We're a major base customer for the new power line that will be built between Perth and Geraldton," he said.
"We underwrite some capacity at the Geraldton Port and we are also a base customer for the establishment of the new port at Oakagee."
Analyst Peter Strachan says in the next six months there is likely to be a rush of similar activity.
"Those companies that have got cash in their balance sheet, they will be also able to look around at their peers in the industry, peers who are perhaps less well funded, and I'm sure there will be opportunities for joint ventures and even mergers and acquisitions going forward.
"Companies that have strong treasuries will be taking the opportunity whilst commodity prices are low of taking advantage and building up their position."
Because of the recession, with major miners preserving capital resources, I fear SRSR may not have that may JV suitors. Cash is really tight.
If this was 2006, we would be in a different economic environment and could realistically expect a large spike up in the pps after the National Instrument is issued.
I am cautiously optimistic here, as this is not the time to be drinking kool aid.
The dreaded TA.
Once the PPS starts climbing, I will become a student. My concern is the current recession and the damper it will put on raising funds and making jv more cautious in commiting capital.
With many corporations taking huge hits (Tech) in their pps, the list of candiates may be small.
Yes, you are right, there are the other zones that SRSR has to consider.
I've just been burnt on I-Minerals, IMAHF, that I bought at around .25. Went it went to $1.17 in 2006, I didnt sell a one share.
Now its all the way down to .30. Great little junior miner in Idaho run by an ex-Hecla Mining exec.
They are in the process of getting the state of Idaho to issue bonds to finance the mine operations. Glad SRSR doesnt need to do that.
Counting (the chickens before their hatched) the niobium and tantulum before issuance of the NI43-101.
If SRSR's price does spike up after the NI43-101, what profit taking strategies would you all use? I realize there will be an initial spike up and then a consolidation of price.
Niobe and Tantalus! The Greek connection is cosmic!
The name Sarissa, is what the long spear formation was called and was used by Alexander the Great and his father, Philip of Macedonia.
Hence, the three spears we see on SRSR's logo.
core samples = LAB = sample verification = NI43-101 = JV = $$$$$
When the NI43-101 is released, some of us will be heading to 12 step programs!
If Hawke is involved in the issuance of the 43-101, you know we are in for a good times for SRSR.
National Instrument 43-101
National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101) is a rule developed by the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and administered by the provincial securities commissions that govern how issuers disclose scientific and technical information about their mineral projects to the public. It covers oral statements as well as written documents and websites. It requires that all disclosure be based on advice by a "qualified person" and in some circumstances that the person be independent of the issuer and the property.
A qualified person (QP) as defined in NI 43-101 as an individual who:
a) is an engineer or geoscientist with at least five years of experience in mineral exploration, mine development or operation or mineral project assessment, or any combination of these;
b) has experience relevant to the subject matter of the mineral project and the technical report; and
c) is a member in good standing of a professional association.
NI 43-101, together with its Companion Policy 43-101CP and Form 43-101F1 Technical Report can be downloaded from the Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists website.
NOTE: Members are reminded that NI 43-101 is currently under revision. Many organizations, including APGO, have submitted comments and suggestions for consideration.
The definitions of resources and reserves approved by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petrolum and adopted by NI 43-101 are available from the Standards and Guidelines section of the CIM website.
What exactly is this 43-101 we all are eagerly awaiting and know will increase SRSR's pps once issued?

Well, SRSR's REEs are beginning to sound Greek to me.....cause it is Greek...orthoclase means to break...and polymorph means many shapes or forms and of course we all know that a prophyroblast is a nitrogen containing organic compound.
I'm sure we will unearth tons more Greek sounding REE's in Zone D and beyond.
Most of the technical mumbo jumbo boils down to complex systems for naming rocks that are mixtures.
Thanks Professor D for the explanation of REE's. I hope to learn more about them, especially the ones SRSR has up at Lake N.
Oh joy, its now official.
I just hope this does not drag down SRSR's pps. SRSR will have great lab results coming out in a couple of weeks. What rotten timing.

Recession started in December 2007: panel
Monday December 1, 4:28 pm ET
By Emily Kaiser
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy slipped into recession in December 2007, the nation's business cycle arbiter declared on Monday, and the downturn could be the worst since World War Two.
The National Bureau of Economic Research said its business cycle dating committee members met by conference call on Friday and concluded that the economic expansion that started in November 2001 had ended. The previous period of economic expansion, which ended in 2001, lasted 10 years.
Sounds good to me homey.......after the lab results confirm the presence of these REE's...we shall all become experts and talk about the wollastonite-garnet mineralization with massive and weakly foliated varieties that are uniform, fine-grained, crystalline, with the same scattered sodaorthoclase porphyroblasts as are found in the red alkaline fenites....that's what SRSR has...................
We will bore everyone at cocktail parties.......and football games.
What is a sodaorthoclase prophyroblast, anyways?
Oh my god, (dog spelled backwards) they can't see cause all that fur is in the way!
We have focused on the niobium and tantalum and I think SRSR has done one study on niobium.
The REE's are the wild card here, as homey_g posted.
If we have tantalum, and we know we do, we have to have REE's too.
Light weight cars with frames and wheels made with microalloyed steel that's fortified with niobium?
Is this the future use of niobium in the auto industry that you foresee Professor D?
And what about tantalum?
Once we get the lab results a lot more folks will start to get interested in SRSR.
Waiting for funds and then I'm on a SRSR Xmas shopping spree.
Nows a great time to be buying Mariner78, cause once the lab results are announced, we will all be chasing the pps.
I don't know how long it will take for the issuance of the NI$43-101, but I can't wait.
How can you tell the little snauzies apart, if you have no collars on them?
Yes, its only 59 degrees here in San Francisco and we consider that to be cold.
I suppose you can go ice fishing up at Lake N.
Good to see you here goforthebet.
Great pics of freezing Lake N and the drill equipment. More confirmation that SRSR management is doing exactly what it said it will doing and keeping its shareholders informed of all new developments. This is truly amazing for a pink sheet stock to provide so much detail about its company business plan and for it to be executing it, as we all watch.
I want SAnta to bring us some good lab results for Xmas, if not that than a pps of around .02.
Happy Holidays Gang and Awesome pics!
So, is that the drill apparatus in the blue container? What other bits of info can you all see from these pics?
The dude with the sunglasses and the ciggy, was styling.
Lake N looks like a nice spot for a swim.
WAMU out of the BK would be a great thing for us.
I am of two minds on this. I want SRSR to break out soon and have the share price reflect its "real" value before the lab results are announced. On the other hand, I want to continue to accumulate these extremely cheap shares at the current levels.
Once the lab results are announced, we are off to the races and we'll be chasing at .02, .05, .10, .20 and beyond.
homey_g,
So there was NI 43-141 issued back in 1956 to Gulf?
D
Yes indeed, all my other POS penny stocks have tanked on me. Should have sold them while they were in the green.
Looks like once the SRSR samples are taken to the lab, it could take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks for results. We all have to sit tight and wait for the results. Hopefully, Scott will post more pics and updates as he knows how important it is to keep us up to date on what SRSR is doing.
Yes, dogs love fish.
no, don't feed them caviar, send it to me.
Feed em some steak instead.
Goodmorning goforthebet.
-minerals Receives Public Comments on Permit Application
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Sep 24, 2008 (Marketwire via COMTEX) --
Company: I-Minerals Inc (IMA)
i-minerals inc. (the "Company") (TSX VENTURE:IMA) announces that further to its press release of August 8, 2008 wherein the Company announced the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers ("USACE"), the lead agency for the permitting process, had accepted the Permit Application, and released it for public comment. All comments have been received from regulatory agencies and interested stakeholders under application number 2006-640-CO1.
The comment period has now expired and I-minerals, along with the Corps, are currently in the process of responding and addressing comments received. Comments received have primarily included requests that i-minerals provide additional detail on certain design elements. This is a typical and normal part of the permitting process where authorizing agencies will request clarification or additional information on project design features. The application is advancing through i-mineral's response to these requests. We expect to provide this additional information to the agencies over the next 30 to 60 days when we will be closer to gaining final Section 404 permit approval.
On September 17, 2008 senior management of i-minerals and its environmental consultant met with the senior engineer from USACE to discuss the comments received as part of the normal course of the permit application process. In general, all of the comments are in line with management's expectations. Any issues brought forward in the comment process that were not already addressed in the Section 404 Wetland Permit Application or the preliminary National Environmental Policy Act ("NEPA") review for the Helmer-Bovill project were identified prior to the comment period and are being addressed on an ongoing basis.
"We are pleased with our progress to date in the permitting process," commented Roger Kauffman, president and CEO of i-minerals. "Our experts have compiled a thorough document which together with the fact our mineral deposit contain no metals or sulfides and the proposed process facility has zero water discharge give us great confidence as we pursue the permitting process."
A. Lamar Long, CPG, is the Qualified Person ("QP") for the Helmer-Bovill project under NI 43-101 standards. He oversees the quality control and quality assurance program and the selection and preparation of all samples for metallurgical analysis and reviews all analytical results prior to public disclosure

The core sample pictures that were posted prove that a "live drill was vertical and turning."
Good work tajitj digging up this info on Dr. Keevil.
Successful mining runs long and deep in the Keevil clan and will continue with SRSR.
Thanks Pmker.
I have a feeling that news and more pics will start flowing now making us all very excited and nervous. I know I have my pencils sharpened at the calculater ready to start clicking away at those numbers........
Great. We are moving right along.
Any thoughts on the uplisting?
Mooj, you really should take a trip up there to the site and check out the drilling. You will then verify that this drilling is indeed taking place.
Be careful you dont fall in Lake N, as it is very chilly up there.
So, they take these samples to the lab? Or do they need more samples?
Are these samples taken at any particular depth level?
How many more will be taken? Or does all this depend on the preliminary lab results?
This is getting to be very exciting! Everything that SRSR has told us will happen is taking place before our very eyes.
Will any future uplisting take place after the NI43-101 or before the NI43-101 is issued?
I agree that is a good strategy to wait until the National Instrument is released and the drilling reports are in.
However, if you wait till that time, you will be buying SRSR at a much higher pps. That is a decision that each investor needs to make in terms of their risk tolerance.
For me, the prior work that was done and the Hawke report make me feel confident that the reserves are present.
Your prediction is overtly pessimistic.
But, I'm willing to take a side bet on it and buy your cheap SRSR shares.
Alternative sources of energy, is where we are headed.
Biofuels will benefit from $$$ spent to investigate the feasibility of growing non-food crops, like jatropha, and turning it into fuel for cars.
Tyson is doing it with chicken manure.
Some companies will make it, get the research grants from the Feds, acquire facilities and start production. I hope BLDV is one of those companies. I know that they are working on it.
Fundamentals will trump this gap business. A NI43-101 instrument detailing and verifying the reserves of nobium and tantalum and other REE's will get this baby moving.
I don't need a chart to tell me that at these prices, SRSR is a great buy.
I'm buying more because I fully expect, that with a NI43-101 issued, the pps will be at least .15. Some, like Professor Downsideup, predict the pps to be around .30 after the NI43-101.
Thanks. I purchased the I-Hub service and I don't want to open am account at TDAmeritrade.
What's their commission structure like?
I have free trades at Zecco.
