Any report from the Lehman Conference today?
This is the only news I found so far:
Brocade Award-Winning SilkWorm Fabric Switches Provide Intelligent Storage Networking Platform for 2.6 Terabyte-Per-Hour Archival Backup And 2.2 Terabyte-Per-Hour Restore
PR Newswire - October 29, 2002 11:30
Brocade Storage Networking Infrastructure Optimizes Computer Associates and Microsoft(R) SQL Server 2000(TM) Application Performance for Enterprise Customers
STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD, ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (Brocade(R)) (Nasdaq: BRCD), the world's leading provider of infrastructure for Storage Area Networks (SANs), announced today that it has become a BrightStor(TM) Offering industry partner, along with industry leaders Computer Associates (NYSE: CA) (CA), Microsoft, Emulex Corporation, Hitachi Data Systems, and Quantum. In addition, the BrightStor Offering industry partners announced today that, using a Brocade intelligent storage networking platform, they have achieved a record-setting 2.6 Terabyte per Hour (TB/hr) archival backup and 2.2 TB/hr restore of a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database running on Windows 2000 Datacenter Server (view press release at http://www3.ca.com/Press/PressRelease.asp?id=2109 ). In addition to raising the bar in backup performance, the benchmark demonstrates how SANs can optimize mission-critical applications by providing the data performance and protection required in enterprise data centers.
"We are delighted to work with SAN market and technology leaders like Brocade in the BrightStor Offering," said Nigel Turner, CA Senior Vice President of BrightStor Solutions. "In addition to delivering the fastest backup performance in the Windows environment, our solution, with the help of partners like Brocade, provides integrated and fully qualified storage solutions for enterprise deployments of SQL Server-backed by industry leaders."
The backup was achieved through the BrightStor Offering, an effort designed to bring together storage industry leaders to deliver storage solutions that provide fast and continuous business availability during data backups. The BrightStor Offering focuses on delivering a high performance, high availability architecture that reduces enterprises' TCO. Effective large- scale deployment and upgrade of enterprise business applications requires effective management of storage resources and data that operate more efficiently in an environment of high availability such as a SAN. Brocade SANs support the significant performance and scalability needs of leading databases, like Microsoft SQL Server, while providing an environment of security and high availability.
"As data volumes continue to grow at a rapid pace, organizations worldwide are turning to SANs as a cost-effective means to implement a high performance infrastructure to enable their mission critical applications and provide a scalable, more reliable backup and recovery solution," said Jeffrey Brooks, Brocade Chief Marketing Officer. "As the exclusive provider of the switch architecture for the BrightStor Offering, Brocade is pleased to have participated in such record-breaking results. We look forward to our ongoing work with these industry leaders to continue delivering valuable business solutions to enterprise customers."
The BrightStor Offering is another example of the long-standing Brocade partnership with CA that has produced world-class storage solutions in data backup and SAN management for enterprise customers. The companies are currently working together to create SOLUTIONware based on CA BrightStor Enterprise Backup and the SilkWorm 3900 32-port Enterprise Fabric Switch- announced yesterday by Brocade -- that can simplify SAN implementation through proven and pre-tested "recipes for success" to address today's most challenging data management requirements, including high performance backup.

CHTR,
Hamvestor,I was hoping for a nice run when David Faber of CNBC quickly mentioned the investment by Mark Cuban, and that Paul Allen might continue to invest in the company. The stock sold off partly because there was mention of concern about CHTR's huge debt and the down Market.I was stopped out,but am watching for any further news.

If BRCD gets bought here,we are moving higher:
07:03 ET BRCD Brocade guides Q4 below consensus (8.25)
Due to continued weakness in the IT spending environment, co guides its Q4 outlook to $0.07 per share on revs in the range of $152-$153 mln (consensus $0.09 and $160.39 mln).
CHTR,
Hamvestor, you are welcome.I am glad someone else remembered Marc Cuban, who became a Billionaire by selling Broadcast.com at the height of the Internet craze. He was on CNBC last year when the Market was sliding and said that he still thinks the Nasdaq was overvalued.I made a mental note to watch his investments and was lucky enough to see that Briefing note on his 5.3% investment in CHTR.

BRCD running,
15:29 ET BRCD Brocade rises on positive preannouncement chatter (8.01 +0.64) -- Update --
We are hearing trading floor talk that BRCD may preannounce to the upside before Lehman's storage conference on Tues Oct 29; while there is no way to confirm this, traders cite ELX's strong results yesterday as well as a positive Lehman note which said the firm was confident in BRCD's numbers.
CHTR,
More fron Briefing:
14:11 ET Broadcast.com founder, Dallas Mavs owner Mark Cuban reports 5.3% stake in Charter Comm (1.00 +0.06)
CHTR,
14:11 ET Mark Cuban reports 5.3% stake in Charter Comm (1.00 +0.06)

16:07 ET ELX Emulex beats by 3 cents, issues guidance (13.80 +0.64)
Reports Q1 (Sep) earnings of $0.19 per share, $0.03 better than the Multex consensus of $0.16; revs were $70.4 mln, vs consensus of $70.7 mln. Expects Q2 EPS of $0.19 on revs of $72-$75 mln, vs consensus of $0.17 and $75.4 mln.
12:57 ET CSCO Cisco Systems seeing improving order trends -- Lehman (11.81 +0.55)
Lehman channel checks have revealed somewhat improved order trends for networking leader Cisco Systems during the month of October.
08:32 ET Jobless claims lower than expected
Jobless Claims fell 25K to 389K, below the 405K market consensus; the 4-week average is also trending lower again and now stands at 404K. Continuing claims fell 115K, which will also be greeted favorably as it indicates the prior week's sharp gain was an aberration. Really not much happening on the labor market front - conditions appear to remain flat with layoffs being roughly matched by hiring, leaving little net job growth.
08:34 ET Thomas Weisel downgrades select semi equipment names
Thomas Weisel lowers their sector weighting on the Semi Capital Equipment sector to Mkt Weight from Overweight; believes that industry is entering a period of bifurcation as the prolonged downturn has created a chasm between co's that are profitable, have strong balance sheets, and little debt, and co's that are burning cash and are more highly leveraged; unless the industry is bailed out by an unexpected near-term recovery, firm expects this trend to continue. Downgrades KLAC, AMAT, NVLS, AEIS, LRCX, MKSI, TER, and VECO (see upgrades/downgrades for details).

After seven years in business Amazon.com (NasdaqNM:AMZN - News) is still far from having a profitable year. It has posted net losses of $281 million over the last four quarters and has a $3 billion accumulated deficit. Yet investors still stuck in a bubble-era mindset have bid shares up 158% in the last 12 months.
Why all the excitement? Investors are enthused by partnerships with the likes of Target, Office Depot, Toys "R" Us and Expedia.com. In order to draw more big names onto its site, Amazon has been pushing deep discounts on items like bestselling books and offering free shipping on all orders of $25 and up. Previously you had to order $99 worth to get free shipping.
Problem is, says Billy C. Bowden, analyst at Crown Capital Partners, while Amazon's tactics may boost sales and customers, they'll likely squeeze margins even more. For each (low-margin) pencil sold in Office Depot's corner of Amazon, the online service gets just a small fee. And showing the complications of bringing on partners, Amazon is already in a beef with Expedia.com over $3.7 million the company says Expedia owes it. End result: Amazon's investors are going to wait longer than they expected for black ink. Short the stock. Cover at $10.

Salomon Smith Barney believes that AMZN could face as much as a $0.05 negative EPS impact for Q4 if the labor situation at West Coast port is unresolved and the ports remain closed through year end; while some retailers have stockpiled inventory to cushion the impact, firm feels that AMZN's low-inventory model may complicate contingency planning

ELN moving higher,
Shares in Elan continued their recent recovery in Dublin today as NCB Stockbrokers upgraded the company from 'reduce' to 'hold'. The shares were up 33 cent - nearly 10%5 - to €3.75 just before lunchtime.
NCB reviewed its recommendation following the implementation of a recent restructuring programme announced by new chairman Garo Armen.
The note said NCB viewed the programme and the aggressive measures taken to address the upcoming funding problems as positives, though it described the target of raising $1.5 billion in cash as ambitious. It said revenue targets appeared to be realistic.
Analysts David Marshall and Orla Hartford said Elan's recent strong share performance appears to have been driven by rumours of a takeover approach, but they believe any move is unlikely until the SEC has completed its probe into the company and the restructuring plan has progressed further.
