"No one seems to be arguing about the premises that job loss will likely occur at higher chip prices "
..........so the current zero job growth is better?
"No I don't ignore the possibility that Laidlaw might add tax revenue if it goes into operation, however I don't believe the revenue will be as high as the quotes I've heard from people on LLEG IHUB."
........so Clean Power's welfare handout from the town would be better?

citizens for a new vision
the angry hot dog salesman?
Square wheels? Too many truckers driving thru town with wads of cash in their pockets not staying long enough? We want a bombing range on the mill site? Good spot for low income housing? Frozen wood chips?
"Word is there is a major developer who is waiting in the wings for Laidlaw to go away so they can step in and create real opportunity and real jobs on the mill site. And since Laidlaw does not own the site, I suspect the real property owners have been contacted."

Do you favor Laidlaw? Sign the petition
To the editor:
A volunteer based citizens group named “City That Trees Built” has launched a website to serve as an informational portal for the Laidlaw Biomass project. The goal of the group is to educate the residents of Berlin and the surround-ing areas with factual and timely information on the project. The group was formed to assist the project owners with the dissemination of information, permitting and other activities to assist with the transition to the Berlin area. At the website listed below, there is a link to sign the petition in favor of the project, currently, there are over 1,000 signatures in favor of the project. For more information, go to: www.citythattreesbuilt.com

wouldn't happen to be a wind project full of hot air that now has 3/4 million dollar lein against it for non-payment?

"Those unemployed union laboreres will not quit!!!! "
Why should they? They're unemployed. They aren't paying taxes and neither are you, if I understood one of your post on B&C correctly. You walked away from your property because you were assessed thru the roof.
I'm riding free shares. I've trade this stock enough to do so. If LLEG succeeds, great. It'll help put Berliners back to work and keep em from sucking off my property taxes. But if not, I've lost nothing and Berlin's unemployment rate of 7.7% will continue to climb. With a population of 10109 http://www.nh.gov/nhes/elmi/htmlprofiles/pdfs/berlin.pdf and roughly 5689 taxpayers, thats a huge burden on the working folks.

I think it is time for the mayor and
Berlin City Council to stop closing doors
To the editor:
“Forty lousy jobs”, a very
bold statement to make
when the city of Berlin has
the highest unemployment
rate in the state. A very easy
statement to make when you
Mr. Goudreau have a secure,
stable job. I would think
that a man elected to run
city government would have
more insight and be able to
recognize the “spin off’ affect
those forty lousy jobs would
create.
A lot has been written by
Mr. Edwards about the wood
studies and in his opinion
the unavailability of raw
material needed to support
the Laidlaw project. Have
you Mr. Edwards or any
members of the city council
talked to any of the local
logging contractors? I think
you would be surprised to
fi nd the number of loads of
wood on wood yards across
the North County with no
market to sell to. These are
the spin off jobs that would
benefi t from those forty lousy
jobs. I wonder if the mayor or
any council members have
actually been to the former
mill site and walked the
river bank. I ask you what
tourist would stay and look
at the degraded riverbed
and adjoining riverbank, the
hydro dam and accompanying
pen-stock and turbine
facility. I wonder what the
view from the third fl oor of
a fi ctitious casino would look
like staring at the dilapidated
Notre Dame high
school and its blue plywood
windows. If the mayor and
council believe that its opinion
on Laidlaw is right then
have a referendum vote on
the Laidlaw issue and let the
chips fall where they may.
A majority of letters to
this paper have been in
favor of this project. Berlin
is an industrial town and
its people are hard working
industrial people. Instead
of cutting city services and
school and police budgets
it’s time for the mayor and
council to start adding to the
tax base of this city and creating
revenue with industry.
The mayor and council have
already lost a half a million
dollars of revenue a year by
not accepting the leachate
from the landfi ll and they
are in the process of losing
another half a million dollars
a year of revenue from
the wastewater from the new
federal prison. Turning away
an industry and potential
revenue streams that would
create jobs and tax base is
irresponsible.
The mayor and city council’s
agenda appears to block
industry and cut city budgets.
The council’s directive to cut
city departments budgets by
7.5 percent will have a further
effect on the tax payers
and workers of this city. In
the city managers budget
summary that Councilor
Donavan in his own words
said “he didn’t have time
to read” calls for fi ve men
to lose their jobs at Public
Works. Five men that will
add to the unemployment
rate of the city. Five men who
are taxpayers to this city.
When Mr. Goudreau doesn’t
care about “forty lousy jobs”
what’s another fi ve jobs to
add to the problem. Along
with this is the proposal to
sub contract garbage collection.
Currently the city provides
garbage collection for
businesses that may not continue
if it is contracted out
adding another expense for
businesses in the city. The
men who work on garbage aren’t only” garbage men”. These men
are also salt truck drivers, plow operators;
they perform snow removal operations
and many of the summertime
maintenance duties. One of these men
that is expected lose his job also performs
service and maintenance duties
and responds to emergency situations
on all the furnaces in city buildings
at a savings to the city and taxpayer.
With these men gone it will affect
these and other operations which all
means less services for the tax payers
of this community.
It’s time for the mayor and council
to stop closing doors and open the ones
that are available to them and building
a tax base and revenue stream
that will get people back to work and
create a business friendly environment.
