"Actually I was thinking more along the lines that it is just when a society achieves the maximum affluence for the maximum number of its citizens that the deterioration of the society from within begins. "
We have not achieved this, it is only an illusion. Maximum affluence is still in the control of a distinct minority. If that control is broken, the cycle of deterioration will not be realized.

How can any historical info on market trends be valid?
With the advent of on-line trading and statistical analysis and charts readily available to those who do trade - the shell game is coming to an end, the rules have changed, and what was will never be again.
My advice would be to find a GOOD broker. Local real estate agents may have one to recommend.
Be careful about applying too many places. I got my FICO score, called other lenders and shopped rates to see if I could beat his quote and I couldn't.
Be sure to get a good faith on the closing costs as they could be more important than the rate. The internet company I contacted had closing costs that were more than double that of the broker's loan.
Smoke signals?
Several of the stocks I have been trading are showing small pre-market buys in an upward support range. The conspiracy theorist in me says these are MM smoke signals for a move up later today.
Anyone agree with this theory? Anyone else seeing smoke signals?
JB - did you cover your MLNM short??
General advice needed -
I am doing very well with the trading, but would like to cut down to 3 or 4 days a week so I can have a life.
Can anyone suggest specific criteria (futures levels, etc) or days of the week that trade weaker so I can pick my days off effectively?
Thanks,
Paula
You said "They also tell me that I can hook up all three of our computers to any phone jack (using their modems and routers) and operate as a home network, something I had been thinking about doing anyway. "
Just get an external router an use anyone's networking equipment to share the connection.
I have a wireless network in my office and I use that to brige to my house, so now I only pay for one internet connection.
Let me get this straight...
You are shorting a biotech with a cancer drug waiting in the wings? Then you're going to leave it for a week? And what if it triples???? I know that is unlikely, but it is possible.
Zeev, I think OMG is betting the farm on new auto technology. The key is in the 13% increase in PM and the tooling up of new tech for later in the year.
If it works they're good to go. Their business will increase dramatically. Wasn't this acquisition the whole reason for the big debt and the current situation?
Unless there is a dramatic economic downturn, I expect their bet to pay off. Even a continuation of the weak economy will not stop the new technology in the auto industry, it is a necessary development.
Zeev, I found your remarks on OMG to be confusing.
"Still a loss" - didn't they show a small profit? What does that mean?
I am not an accounting type, but do you take out an asset before it is sold? Orchid recently had the same situation and they listed it as "discontinued", but they did not take it out. It seems that a company that was circumspect enough to write down the cobalt in the first place would not get sloppy at this point.
"If markets turn south again, they may actually run into debt servicing problems." I don't understand this either - what does the price of the stock have to do with their ability to service debt? Does you mean metal markets? Auto catylists are increasing - this was the reason for the acquisition that got them in trouble in the first place - and that bet seems to be paying off.
I am wondering if there isn't a touch of sour grapes here because you missed the run on this one.
I stay in or out of a stock as the charts and the tape dictate. What I have seen to date is constant accumulation by the instys and a spike up in price every time they stick a big toe in. There is an ensuing drop as the specialist works the stock down a bit, but then every time the blocks come back the price spikes again. Yesterday the instys backed off, but they were buying every day before then. The stock was whipsawed but volume was not out of the ordinary, showing ownership has stabilized.
The only way I can see this going back to the 6's is a major economic downturn that puts EVERYTHING down 50% and halts progress on alternative energy development in the auto indusry.
The most striking thing I found on the chart is the fact that hedge funds and small investors are mirror images since 10/00.
It is so striking that the only explaination I can come up with is some new software went on the market that helps them short the market and hedge with perfection, exploiting the emotional ups and downs of joe6pk.
Oil will be obsolete in 20 years -
I've said it before and been ridiculed, but it will happen:
http://www.msnbc.com/news/904814.asp
I have lousy lungs, so I can't afford to get sick.
I would suggest the following:
Regular doses of Vitamin C, as much as your system will absorb (you will get the runs when you have too much, and some people are less tolerant to the acidic properties).
Eccanacia and zinc at the first sign of a "cold". This supports the immune system and makes it more difficult for the virus to get a hold. Some people also recommend garlic.
I know, I know - there are scientific reports that say this is bunk; but personal experience says it works. A bad cold could land me in the hospital, so this is what I have done for the last several years. My colds are less severe. I seriously doubt that the "placebo effect" could be that strong.
Get a hold of the liason in your congressman or senator's office. They may have a "secret" number to use in calling the SEC or be able to contact them and stimulate a response.
That's what you pay them for...
I don't get it with IMCL - LOUSY PR, tax problems and it goes up?
I noticed blocks were dumped after the halt was lifted. Is it a short now??? Is this a pump & dump?
I don't trade this one because I don't trust their management, just trying to figure out the action. I'm tempted to short.
Not kidding - it might have happened but I didn't notice that it was a pump & dump. I don't follow a lot of the "popular" stocks, haven't been trading that long, and I'm finding my perception is changing rapidly right now.
I noticed SEPR and GERN both appeared to be pumped pre-market and then shorted? Is this a correct observation? Were there many other stocks manipulated this way this morning? Does this mark the beginning of a distribution cycle?
Many questions as I have not seen this sort of thing before.
AGIX - is anyone following it and can you give me a "read" on the current action? I've done great with a swing trade but I am more familiar with dead cat bounces than stocks entering high ground.
SIRI has been mentioned by a few people I respect on the boards, so I was just looking at the chart. Wether you buy or sell is based on personal objectves (long or short term), but if your objectives are long term, this chart suggests there is a lot more mileage in SIRI:
http://www.bigcharts.com/custom/datek-com/datek-rt2.asp?osymb=siri&symb=siri&time=10yr&f....
EP - that was the MOTHER of all shakeouts - I have never seen anything like it, but then again, I'm not that experienced a trader.
How common is a move like that?
I held my trading position through it because of the strength of earlier action, but I certainally learned the meaning of "keep your powder dry". I wish I hadn't already spent my wad when I saw it at $6.20.
I live in the US, Snowy Denver :)
I am happy with freetrade, especially since they changed their daytrading calculation.
The only drawbacks are:
1) no stock transfers in or out
2) cash transfers are by wire only
3) no support other than e-mail
It happens on three different machines...
"If they got rid of all pointless, lying, or just plain insane posts there would be very little left."
I disagree. I have found quite a few of the boards to be very informative. You just have to use the ignore feature heavily.
I did that a couple of weeks ago when this happened.
1) set up PaulaGem2 on domain #1... That worked for about 1/2 hour.
2) set up another alias on domain #1 - it was blocked so I assumed the block had been changed to domain level.
3) set up the third alias on domain #2 - it worked for a few minutes.
4) tried to set up a fourth alias on domain #3 - it did not work so I assumed the block was extenede to IP level.
I called Yahoo and spoke to mgmt. They said they had no record of an IP block but it disappeared a couple of hours after I complained in person.
This block was IP level immediately. I was able to sign in at the library and on a friend's computer. It is odd because it is only blocking a subset of the boards and this time it is a block on current data. I can access anything before that point if I already have the board bookmarked. I can post to those boards but not read my posts.
Taking your advice, I just tried using Netscape - same story. Sorry, I don't know how to "jump thru a series of proxy servers". The boards that don't work stop on 3/14 sometime after 4:40.
Who would be behind message board manipulation?
For a second time my Yahoo account is being messed with.
I am blocked on the IP level from: OMG MEDT ICPT BPUR GOJO CCUR FCEL CYTC AFFX ALLP AMLN ARDM BCII CALY CEPH EDSN SQNM GEB FHRX NTII ALT LSBC MDCO RTIX APPX GNVC CTIC CNCT CRXA CRY MLNM CBST CYTO STEM GNLB GILD HITK BLUD IMNR INCY INKP IPIC KOSP LJPC LGND MOGN NPRO PARS RGEN SERO SUPG VRTX CELG NEOT QSC. I am not being blocked from ORCH which is the board I post to most frequently.
Since the blocking is both selective and at the IP level, I believe it is a hedge fund or someone who has bought off an employee for the purpose of manipulation. I spoke to Yahoo management the last time my account was disrupted and they told me there were no blocks according to their records. Still, the block existed so it had to be "unofficial".
Some of the boards I am blocked from are only bookmarked and never posted to. My suspicion is that there is a specific employee involved that does not have access to the entire database.
Not to sound obtuse - but what is the "CME" symbol you are charting???
Can't find the chart you referred to..
Point taken - unfortunately with freetrade it is only e-mail, you can't phone.
Fortunately I had already made some money on the run-up so I just had to give back some of my profit.
If you're going to learn a lesson, I guess that's the way to go.
You can only wire funds in and out of Freetrade and they post the funds in a timely fashion.
No stock transfers and no phone customer service.
I may have missed something like that, it's never happened before. How common is this sort of thing?

Dear Valued Freetrade Client:
This is not a software issue on our part, we can not update the status of your trade
without receiving the fill report from the market. While automation has made the
process of executing and receiving a report of an execution faster, the Execution
Agents have up to 3 days to report a fill on a trade. Your order was never
reflected as "Canceled", which means you were not out on the order.
Sincerely,
Client Services

How can I trade an account that waits 50 minutes to show a fill?
Don't give me a form mail about my cache because the other trade showed up
immediately, as they usually do.
IT IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM ON YOUR PART and I should not be penalized for
the extra trade.
It seems I placed a limit order for 7.94 - I did not get the fill reported so I cancelled it and replaced it with a 7.95 which was filled.
50 minutes later they reported the fill @ 7.94 and posted it to my account. I guess they are saying they are not responsible becaues the "third party" reported it late.
How the heck can a trade get lost for 50 minutes with all of this automation?
AMERITRADE - is anyone else having software problems.?
They did not post a fill to my account and I replaced the order, ended up with a double posistion and a double loss.
Fortunately I had made a bigger gain on MLNM earlier but it still bugs me. This is the first time I have tried to trade a rapidly moving stock on Freetrade and I am not impressed.
In edit - I just got this e-mail:
Dear Valued Freetrade Client:
Please note, we do not execute your orders. All orders are routed to a third party
market maker for execution. Please read the terms and conditions regarding the
execution and reporting of trades.

Since I got no response from you I had to sell that 300 shares at market.
This is the first time I have ever tried to trade this account in a
rapidly moving stock and I am extremely disappointed.
You can't fill an order .28 above market 15 minutes after it was cancelled.
I was trying to buy 500 shares of MLNM @7.95-7.94 and I sold them at
market $7.66
You should credit me for any other trades and I am afraid to trade this
stock any more today because you have filled my orders so poorly.
I would be interested in your thoughts on the same chart but three year weekly. I always have to look at things in multiple time frames.
Yes, thanks. I later realized that I posted the link wrong.
Last week I got locked out of Yahoo and I believe it was related to an offensive stance I was taking against a poster who was BS'ing about the stock.
I had one other experience with a poster who had enough clout to have my posts removed immediately for "TOS" violations. I was simply posting charts and I have since posted the same sort of material without their being removed. That poster was "Roger Mangane" on the Yaho IMGN board. He was obviously a broker and appeared to scare people out of their shares. His posts and ID have since been completely wiped from that board.
Last week my ID was blocked. I created a new ID and after a few posts that was blocked. A third ID was blocked so I assumed there was a domain level block. I created a fourth ID under another domain that I control and posted on that one for a while and it was blocked. An attempt to create a fifth ID under a third domain was unsuccessful so I assumed there was a IP level block.
I sent an email complaint with the title "POSSIBLE SEC VIOLATION" and contacted someone by phone. I was told that there were NO BLOCKS showing in the system at a management level. I know that I was blocked because I had bogus ID's blocked when I was fighting against IMGN's porno boy (another story) and I know the behaviour of the page when it is blocked.
I found that a friend of mine was able to post to my ID from an ISP in CA, but I was not. The block was removed late in the day and I got a cryptic e-mail from Yahoo saying they believed the problem would not happen again.
There are those who would say this is paranoia speaking, but the lawsuit referred to on the IBCL board contends that it does happen.
Be careful out there folks, lots of sharks in the water!!!
Interesting info on lawsuit against RB and manipulators:

Policy is now closer to Daytek policy. I am not surprised becuase they would have lost 90% of their customers if they change Daytek to Ameritrade rules and they consolidated clearing houses recently.
Freetrade has changed their daytrading margin policy -
I can now wholeheartedly recommend it.
Or lack of asenine pseudo-religious morality in the legal system.
O.T. Check out ORCH for a good deal, MM's are dumping the traders and I expect them to make a run from here.
