Not too pleased with my state government today. The unintended consequences of the new immigration law make it's signing completely unacceptable, to me.

More are asking: What's the matter with Arizona?

Arizona is "turning into a punch line," one of the state's newspapers reported Friday after surveying the latest global commentary about the state featuring choice phrases such as "wingnut paradise," "nuttiest legislative body," "America's dumbest state," and "blazing a trail into the fringe."
It was hardly news to Arizonans, though. Last fall, the state's governor, Jan Brewer, was caught on video in Tucson expressing her "great relief, to say the least, to get out of that hellhole in Phoenix."
Even some of the state's own politicians have begun referring to Arizona as a "laughing stock."
Meanwhile, in Google searches, the rhetorical questions "What's the matter with Arizona" or "What's wrong with Arizona" are turning up with increasing frequency.
The sources of derision?
There was the "birther" bill approved by the Arizona House this week requiring presidential candidates to prove their citizenship by displaying birth certificates.
There's an immigration measure that effectively converts the state's police departments into immigration officers, mandating that they stop and question people they suspect of being undocumented immigrants.
And there's the new gun law that allows anyone besides convicted felons to carry concealed weapons without registration or background checks.
Finally, for good measure, there's the sideshow Republican Senate primary starring J.D. Hayworth, a serious challenger to Sen. John McCain, and his now-famous observation that same sex marriage laws would lead to men marrying horses.
So, what is the matter with Arizona?
"Relationships have just deteriorated to the point where government is not serving its essential function, which is serving the people," said Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley. "The rhetoric has gone up several notches to the point where everyone is taking it personally."
"Immigration is the federal government's responsibility, and we have failed to address it," Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said in a statement to POLITICO. "State and local governments, particularly in Arizona, are bearing the brunt of our inaction, so I don't blame the Arizona legislature for trying to pick up the slack."
Flake said the immigration measure "isn't the bill I would have written, but it's difficult to criticize the state for trying to deal with a problem created by the federal government."
"People are asking 'what's the matter with Arizona'" added Andrei Cherny, a Democratic candidate for Arizona treasurer in a post in POLITICO's Arena. "Under the very brightly shining sun, we too are losing our wealth, population, and standing. But there is nothing wrong with Arizona – except for the 'leaders' the state has elected to public office."
Most observers, including those who object to the immigration bill, believe the state is right to be alarmed by the porousness of the border and associated violence. They do not put immigration in the same category as the plainly mischievous birther bill.
But, according to some observers, there's a disinterest in state politics among many state residents that permits things to get out of hand.
Arizona's population – particularly that of the sprawling capital Phoenix – has swelled in recent decades with former residents of major eastern cities and nearby California, all looking for a more affordable lives and few interested in the state's affairs.
"The vast majority of Arizona is not native born and we have this very large metropolis in Phoenix of people who are from someplace else. Most people don't feel rooted in the community," said Democratic state Rep. Kyrsten Sinema – a native Arizonan and one of the most pronounced critics of the immigration law.
Sinema added that Arizona has "become the laughing stock of the nation" after passing the "worst immigration bill in the country" as well as the "ridiculous and offensive" birther bill.
The disconnect between the size of the population and the number of people who actually engage in the political process has left plenty of room for a wide variety of interests to take plum political spots.
The leader of the legislature's recent immigration action is state Sen. Russell Pearce, a Republican from Mesa who shepherded the immigration bill and is an ally of both Hayworth and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio – the local politic power who is facing a Federal civil rights investigation.
"Because of low turnout in the primaries and the fact that defections of independents from both parties have left registered Republicans and Democrats more ideological, Arizona has had for many years a legislature that is very conservative compared to the population of registered voters," said Bruce Merrill, a political scientist at Arizona State University who runs the ASU/KAET poll – the gold-standard political survey in the state. "This particular legislature is led by Russell Pearce who is way more conservative than even the conservative Republicans in the legislature."
The proposed immigration law demonstrates the dynamic that has taken over the state.
McCain has bent over backwards to say he supports the measure, which represents almost the exact opposite approach to immigration reform he sponsored with Massachusetts's Sen. Edward Kennedy in 2006. This after McCain recently declared that he was never a "maverick" despite branding himself as one during his run for president.
Hayworth meanwhile has been basking in the glow of the new bill, touting the support of the border patrolling Minutemen while brushing off protests by civil rights groups.
And Brewer hasn't demonstrated any clear stance on the bill – recently freezing for 20 seconds during a press conference when asked for her thoughts, only to say that she needs to examine the issue before making a decision.

damn, you beat me to the surfit reference.
It was surfit in the room.
At least that's what he told IBAFT.
jimmy, please tell me "AT" isn't Alan Treffry.
AT said they have a record of the number BUT couldn't send him proof.it was all electronic?
Usually covered by an insider, or a "consultant" working closely with a market maker. The T/A is probably gagged, and you are taking the company's word that they only have 5 shares.
That's gobbledygook. Maybe at some point in time they were worth their face value. Obviously, when JBII acquired them, they traded at a substantial discount.
The media credits are worth exactly their face value based on the actual ad rates that the market determines is their actual ad rates that the media outlets themselves charge.
The stock is traded on a public exchange where it's value is easily determined. Is there a market for the media credits? Do they trade at face value? (We all know the answer to this question). Using the stock value is quite inferior to what?? What superior valuation method was used in valuing the media credits?
If the stock is highly illiquid and can move 20% on $5.000 in volume then using the stock value method is quite inferior.
I did think it was me, until I saw my window shutters swaying.
I'm in old town, Scottsdale.
That's a first for me. Kind of creepy, it's like, my brain was not afraid, but my body was, my legs were tingling. Just a gentle little sway back and forth, back and forth, about 4 or 5 times.
I just felt an earthquake. At 3:43 Phoenix time. That was weird.
LOL, ...if mommy is a commie, you must turn her in.
Uh Oh, he said the "E" word.
AS MUCH evidence AS IS possible.
I think it helps take away some of the pain.
My God. HOW can they be so stupid?
we need a class project.
hmmm, Michael Williams name is at the top of pg 23.
Page 22, line 16. Redacted = ??
Maheu,Glenn,Desormo,Ed Dhonau That's not bad, I wouldn't have Dhonau batting cleanup though.
really Brig, you think that?
Or did you just call the company?
LOL... shoulder on, perv. The little guy would have wanted it that way.
Tonight! Phoenix Orpheum, second row center. Oh yeah. This will be the 4th time I've seen Joe since summer 2008.
Bonamassa, Bonham, Hughes and Sherinian "Mistreated" 17 March 2010
Maybe you're right, I made the mistake of believing him when he said he invented the damn thing.
It looks to me like the guy who patented the mirror mitt (the original sandlizzard??) died in 2008.
Wow, as you noted in your post in 2008, you really were sick.
This is not a game, or a contest, or even a battle with the outcome yet to be determined. Stick a fork in it, this thing is done.
There mistake was not realizing who the defendant was.
You mean people post there? I never can get past the I-box.
Yes ma'am I'm here, red face and all. Just making a few ...ahem... adjustments.
Definitely not Hodges suit. CMKM is the defendant.
Govt Mule - Beautifully Broken
Exactly, this company will never see a dime from those bonds. Any cash from a redeemed bond, would have to go to the preferred stock holder. No bank would ever be foolish enough to take them for collateral. They serve one purpose, pump and dump. So again, the company will never see a dime, the insiders of course, are a different story. Thanks for playing.
Bonamassa/Clapton at Royal Albert Hall
It's either the international head quarters of Ameritrust Groupe Inc. (Michael Cottrell), or a house across the street from it.
There's the rub, IQ1. Frizzell already has the proof, one way or the other. For whatever reason, he's not releasing the information on his own. Why don't you compel him to do so?
This is the hardest one to prove especially since these organizations are not willing to cooperate fully.
One trillion shares, 15 million average holdings per shareholder. Do the math smart guy.
Chuck, where is the post of 70,000 shareholders?
