iPadversaries! 32 Tablets, Slates, Pads, and More
Get ready for the coming onslaught of rivals to Apple's tablet--it's going to get crazy:
http://technologizer.com/2010/08/12/ipad-alternatives/
How many of these will actually make it to market and will any of those pose a serious challenge to the iPad?
I'll believe it when I see it and hold the best one(s) in my hands.

Why buy some other portable platform? Cost, I suppose.
Of course, as Android continues to grow, iPad prices will come down.
But how low? Any speculations?

This could be a strategy by the corporation. If iPhone users are more sexually active than others we might expect them over the long haul to have more children who might very well turn out to be iPhone users. This process might rapidly snowball.
Hence another way for AAPL to dominate the planet. . .and perhaps beyond.

Given the economic climate we're in there may be pressure to lower prices or offer special deals as the holidays approach.
We'll see. I'm willing to wait.
The serious competition goes both ways with Android clearly pulling away from AAPL over the next year in market share.
That, of course, doesn't mean Android will have the best OS.
I presently prefer iOS4, the total package (security, integration, iTunes, The App Store, etc.) and most of the business model the company puts on the road, but I'm not religiously attached to it.
The only AAPL stock I own presently is via ETFs. I like to avoid specific stock risk; I scare easily.
Yes, and I wonder what's going on behind the scenes as SJ and company discuss this issue. . .
AAPL sells a lot of products, but not 200K iPhones per day. . .and Android is just getting started. The prospective market with smartphones, tablets, and who knows what else, is nascent.
Android App Sales Still Half The Size Of iPhone's, Says Big Mobile Developer:

The power of iTunes and The App Store. . .
I'm especially interested in a smaller iPad that adds to the functionality of the current one in terms of features and power.
The present iPad while very close to magical is too heavy and large for carting around, IMO.
I've been spoiled by my iPod Touch which I'm very fond of with the exception of the screen being too small. . .and it's a bit slower now with iOS4, too. But, wow, do I like those folders to organize Apps!
BTW, see: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2010/08/05/businessinsider-how-do-you-organize-your-iphone-apps-2010-8.DTL
Yes. . .and to that I would add price, marketing, and distribution power.
And ask how fast and wide can Android continue to grow?
Hmmm, very interesting. Know anyone who's done that?
Thanks, gottfried.
. . .Windoze, stand alone? Probably not. . .we have three of those already.
Reliability, functionality and longevity are especially important.
The initial price of a Mac Mini, 699, is about top for what I want to spend presently. I could see that coming down, to maybe 599, as the holidays approach.
A basic PC would be less, but doesn't run both OSs.
Thanks. Yes, that particular computer is used for the basics.
What do you think of inexpensive desktops by HP, Gateway, eMachines, Dell, and Lenovo. Do any stand out?
Another, but more expensive alternative, would be to get a new Mac Mini and run both OSX and Win7 on it.
Anyone have suggestions?
7" Android Tablet for $125:
http://dealnews.com/7-Widescreen-2-GB-Internet-Tablet-w-Google-Android-for-125-free-shipping/381220.html?ref=alert
This may not be the device. . .but the day is near when someone puts together a tablet about this size and price that includes reliable hardware with a good capacitive touch screen, processor and memory, and a battery life of a solid 8 hours or better, etc. + a top notch, secure Android build.
. . .then the game changes, and we'll see impressive features and price competition.

The power of product + marketing.
What's going on behind the scene at Apple as Jobs and the key players discuss this?
Tight trading range for SPY in the last 15 hours or so.
Market participants are undecided which way to go.
We have a 6 year old WinXP Dell desktop with a 2.4GH processor (single core) and half a Gig of memory. The memory is Rambus. It's a fast enough CPU the way it's used, but with obviously limited memory.
We'd like to increase it to 2 Gigs, but Rambus memory is very expensive.
Is there any inexpensive way to increase the memory with other modules given the motherboard or is it better to just buy a new computer?
