WILL FARRAKHAN BE ARRESTED FOR CALL TO KILL WHITES?

Minister Louis Farrakhan, the 82-year-old leader of the Nation of Islam
Preaching directly from the Quran before a packed Baptist church, the Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan told his adoring audience that violent retaliation is the only way for American blacks to “rise up” and overthrow their white oppressors.
Conservative black leaders told WND Wednesday they believe Farrakhan’s statements went beyond the limits of free speech into the real of criminal incitement, although a noted constitutional attorney cautioned that prosecuting on these terms would be an uphill battle.
“I’m looking for ten thousand in the midst of the million. Ten thousand men who say, ‘Death is sweeter than continued life under tyranny,’” Farrakhan told the congregants at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Miami in a speech that he posted on his Facebook page earlier this week.
He then launched into a poetic tirade against whites backed up with Quranic verse.
“Death is sweeter than to continue to live and bury our children, while white folks give the killer hamburgers.
“Death is sweeter, than watching us slaughter each other, to the joy of a 400-year-old enemy. Yes, death is sweeter.
“The Quran teaches persecution is worse than slaughter. Then it says, ‘Retaliation is prescribed in matters of the slain.’ Retaliation is a prescription from God, to calm the breast of those whose children have been slain.
“So if the federal government will not intercede in our affairs, then we must rise up and kill those who kill us. Stalk them and kill them and let them feel the pain of death that we are feeling.”
The crowd responded with a standing ovation as the 82-year-old Muslim preacher bathed in the moment.
Watch the clip of Farrakhan’s sermon to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Miami:
One former follower of Farrakhan's was not surprised by the bombastic tone and content of the speech.
"When I was young I used to go listen to Farrakhan and I bought into his racist and hate-filled message," author and radio talk-show host Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson told WND. "To young people who don’t have stable families and fathers around to guide them, Farrakhan’s anger and rhetoric seems like courage and strength. In my anger, I would have killed for Farrakhan. I know what it’s like for these angry black people to be manipulated and convinced to mindlessly follow this black racist."
Peterson said Farrakhan is no different than ISIS calling for an attack on Americans.
"He's calling for an American version of a suicide bombing," said Peterson, an exclusive WND columnist and author of the book "Scam: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America."
Read Joseph Farah's brilliant take on Louis Farrakhan's "declaration of war" on white America
'At least he's honest'
Robert Spencer, author of the blog Jihad Watch and several books about Islam including "Stealth Jihad: How Radical Islam is Subverting America without Guns or Bombs," said he admires Farrakhan for one thing: His brute honesty.
"Farrakhan apparently figured his audience knew that the Quran does sanction the murder of unbelievers who are considered to be at war with Islam. He knew that they would see in the Quran the justification for his blood-chilling call to violence," Spencer told WND. "As monstrous as he is, at least his honesty is a refreshing break from the legion of pious dissemblers who constantly insist that Islam is a religion of peace and that only ignorant 'Islamophobes' think otherwise."
Jack Cashill, a WND contributor and author of the new book "Scarlet Letters: The Ever-increasing Intolerance of the Cult of Liberalism Exposed," said the presidency of Barack Obama has resuscitated and breathed new life into Farrakhan's ministry, encouraging him to spew ever-more outrageous racial invective.
"The Obama presidency has given the 82-year-old Farrakhan new life," Cashill told WND. "By racializing just about everything he has touched, Obama has raised black paranoia to new heights, and Farrakhan is exploiting that paranoia with potentially lethal consequences."
Media blackout
While Farrakhan's Miami speech has been going viral on social media, Cashill was bemused by the lack of interest from the corporate media. This from the same media that gave wall-to-wall coverage of Donald Trump's comments about illegal aliens, Paula Dean's use of the "n" word, and former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling's racist comments to a mistress.
"Still, not a word from the White House or the media on Farrakhan's call to wage jihad on America's police," Cashill said.
Alveda King, an evangelist and pro-life advocate with Priests for Life, said the Islamic leader should take a cue from her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"I would pray to remind Minister Farrakhan that my Uncle Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that 'we must all learn to live together as brothers [and sisters], or perish as fools.' Violence begets more violence," King told WND. "Nonviolent albeit brave and courageous conflict resolution has proven to be very effective throughout the ages. Living by the sword or other human weapons of destruction cause death by the same."
Farrakhan's assumption that the "federal government" should intervene in the affairs of black people is misplaced, she said.
"The government cannot deliver a people, only God can do that," King said. "We must pray to live and not die to declare the works and Word of the Lord."
Looking to spark race war?
Peterson said Farrakhan is a longtime demagogue looking to tap into black angst and spark a "race war."
"Farrakhan claims blacks are suffering under the 'tyranny' of whites, but the only tyranny that's controlling black Americans today is their own anger and hatred toward whites," Peterson said.
Peterson said Farrakhan is deceiving blacks and he's "leading them to the slaughter."
"Farrakhan is a racist. He has referred to whites as blue-eyed devils. He's taking advantage of the anger that exists in the black community for his own personal gain.
"This man is a domestic terrorist and he needs to be arrested immediately for making terrorist threats. This is against the law," he continued. "No white person could incite and encourage violence toward blacks and get away with it. They would be locked up and shunned. What Farrakhan is doing is evil and it’s not good for America. Whites are not causing the suffering and misery that exists in the major urban areas. The breakdown of the black family, dependency on the government, and lack of moral character are the real issues hurting blacks."
Christians applaud Islamic preacher of war
The fact that Farrakhan made his remarks at a black church is even more troubling to Peterson, himself an ordained minister.
"That indicates that these men and women agree with his hate speech. There is no way you can believe in God and applaud and cheer for a demagogue," he said. "There's no way you can be a Christian and listen to someone who encourages you to hate your fellow man. That is not showing love. The people listening to Farrakhan need to repent. These people are encouraging the next generation to hate whites. At this rate, this race issue will never end."
With his outrageous words Farrakhan may be bumping up against the outer limits of what is considered free speech under the First Amendment, but getting a conviction would be difficult under the criminal statutes of most states, said Herb Titus, a constitutional scholar and former law school professor at Regent University.
Before a case could come to the level of federal First Amendment rights, it would first have to go through the criminal courts, Titus said.
"The criminal law requires immediacy, particularity and, with a general statement such as this, it's very difficult to find in the criminal law statutes that he's actually done anything that you could convict him of. There is no such thing as a threat to murder. And attempted murder is very difficult to prove," he said. "There's some catch-all criminal statutes like mayhem but even then there requires evidence that someone is acting on whatever the person is encouraging them to do."
Terroristic threats?
Terroristic threats may provide the best option, but even that wouldn't be a slam dunk.
"That's troubling in itself. What is terrorism? What does that mean? It's never been clearly defined. So again, that's going to give wide discretion to the prosecutor. And laws threatening terror are very wide, one of the first things you are taught in law school is you have to define the elements, and oftentimes threatening behavior just doesn't calculate into criminal behavior."
Titus cited the landmark case of Watts v. United States that ascended to the Supreme Court in 1969.
Robert Watts, a young black man, allegedly stated during a protest rally in Washington, D.C.:
"They always holler at us to get an education. And now I have already received my draft classification as 1-A and I have got to report for my physical this Monday morning. I am not going. If they ever make me carry a rifle the first man I want to get in my sights is L.B.J. They are not going to make me kill my black brothers."
Prosecutors charged Watts with violating a federal law that prohibits threats against the president. Watts countered that his statement was a form of crude political opposition, according to the First Amendment Center.
A federal jury convicted Watts of a felony for violating the law and a federal appeals court affirmed his conviction. On appeal, the Supreme Court reversed, ruling that Watts’ statement was political hyperbole rather than a true threat.

Claims made, concerns expressed, questions asked .... pffft
Trading stock? Meh, not so much.
Now, this statement does have my curiosity up.
The company has consistently filed their notice of late filing, a big plus since that means they are staying current with the required paper work.
And, and ... ugh, umm, oh well
Hey, yeah, apparently the company is getting new investors.
We'll have those wind turbines, oil wells and Native American housing up and going any time now. They may even get that CBM field in Alaska producing.
Anybody else NOT holding their breath?
IF it goes to $100, I'll have doubled my money by selling IF and when this stock hits $100.
BUT< since the current share price is what it is, odds are not in favor of that happening. Wouldn't you agree?

Breitbart Non-Syndicated
http://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2015/07/09/china-just-nationalized-6-trillion-of-stock-losses/
China’s stock market had what traders call a “Dead Kitty” bounce on Thursday as the communist authorities dispatched police and security personnel to “encourage” insider-buying and to arrest short sellers. With the Chinese market still highly inflated even after falling $3 trillion in value, China took action last night to “nationalize” about $6 trillion in losses.
China is about to show its third straight quarter of negative real (after inflation) GDP growth. The nation had been relying on a stock market boom to play a “decisive role” in funding the nation’s “Silk Road” reforms to transition to a consumer economy.
But as Breitbart News warned in “China’s Lehman Brothers Weekend Begins,” the “Red Dragon” has suffered a financial collapse equivalent in degree to the U.S. stock crash in 2008-9. Unlike the U.S., which used a formal government bailout to stabilize markets, the Communist Party instructed the nation’s banks to use their own balance sheets to guarantee the current $8 trillion stated value of all of China’s 2800 listed stocks.
As Stratfor’s John Minnich points out, “market capitalization of Chinese stock markets hovered around $1 trillion to $2 trillion” before the recent stock boom. At its peak on June 12, “China’s stock market capitalization, all the markets across the country, was something in the area of $10 trillion to $11 trillion.”
Minnich comments that people before the boom might gamble some of their personal savings into the stock market, but “it wasn’t critical to financing, corporate financing in the Chinese economy. Almost all corporate finances came through the state-owned banks.”
But President Xi Jinping’s Silk Road reforms aimed to “privatize” the risks of financing state-owned-enterprises off of the balance sheets of state-owned-banks and onto the balance sheet of the public. Over the last two years, the number of Chinese stock brokerage accounts for small individual investors grew from 20 million to about 100 million as the markets boomed.
The vast majority of these new “investors” came from middle class families along the advanced coastal regions of China. They were expected to be the vanguard that would lead the rest of the public to play a “decisive role” in deepening the financial markets (equity capital) to fund China’s “Silk Road” domestic reforms and consumer expansion.
A bull market in stocks was crucial to the communist leadership, because during the boom period that Chinese stocks rose by 150 percent, the real (after-tax) output growth in China was actually negative, despite official figures showing 7 percent growth, according to Lombard Street Research.
Those GDP numbers would have been much worse, except that 85 percent of stock trades in China come from small individuals who experienced a “wealth effect” from about a $9 trillion increase in China stock prices. The fact that people seem to have felt richer probably stimulated a $2 trillion increase in consumption.
But with the Chinese people suffering $3 trillion of losses since June 12, over half of all shares suspended from trading for up to six months, and banks stretched to finance the entire economy and bail out the stock markets, China is about to suffer the worst negative “wealth effect” of any nation since the US Great Depression.
As Breitbart News reported in “China Debt-Bomb Fuse is Burning,” China is buried under “crippling local government and corporate debt”. The country’s debt restructuring plan has consisted of banks rolling over all their non-performing state-owned-enterprise loans and relying on individual investors to bail out the banks by having unsophisticated retail investors buy new public offerings of insolvent state-owned companies.
But with the Silk Road reforms amounting to “little more than creative financial-engineering,” Lombard Street Research assumed that the Chinese government would eventually still have to nationalize $4 trillion, or about 50 percent of GDP, worth of insolvent state-owned-enterprise loans that were still on the books of their state-owned-banks.
And now, with their creative financial-engineering scheme to inflate the stock markets having steered the nation into a 1929-style stock crash, the Chinese Communist Party was just forced to have state-owned banks nationalize another $8 trillion loss, or about 100 percent of GDP.
Political trivia question, who said?
"You can take all the Democratic candidates for President and all the Republican candidates for President. Put them in a sack and shake them up. Take the first one that falls out, grab him by the nape of the neck, and put him right back in the sack. Because there is not a dime's worth of difference in any of them."
I think we can apply the same logic to members of Congress, today.
Now, even the Pope is getting into the act:
"Francis also called for a new global political authority tasked with “tackling … the reduction of pollution and the development of poor countries and regions”. His appeal echoed that of his predecessor, pope Benedict XVI, who in a 2009 encyclical proposed a kind of super-UN to deal with the world’s economic problems and injustices."

Whatever you are doing or planning to do with water that falls on or flows across your property, get it done, now.
President Obama’s administration on Wednesday claimed dominion over all of America’s streams, creeks, rills, ditches, brooks, rivulets, burns, tributaries, criks, wetlands — perhaps even puddles — in a sweeping move to assert unilateral federal authority.
The Environmental Protection Agency, along with the Army Corps of Engineers, says it has the authority to control all waterways within the United States — and will exercise that authority.
“We’re finalizing a clean water rule to protect the streams and the wetlands that one in three Americans rely on for drinking water. And we’re doing that without creating any new permitting requirements and maintaining all previous exemptions and exclusions,” EPA head Gina McCarthy told reporters Wednesday.
The moves comes as part of the Clean Water Act and federal officials say they are simply trying to help businesses comply with regulations.
“This rule is about clarification, and in fact, we’re adding exclusions for features like artificial lakes and ponds, water-filled depressions from constructions and grass swales,” McCarthy said. “This rule will make it easier to identify protected waters and will make those protections consistent with the law as well as the latest peer-reviewed science. This rule is based on science.”
The Supreme Court has twice questioned the breadth of powers decreed under the Clean Water Act, prompting Wednesday’s actions.
McCarthy claimed the new powers would “not interfere with private property rights or address land use.”
“It does not regulate any ditches unless they function as tributaries. It does not apply to groundwater or shallow subsurface water, copper tile drains or change policy on irrigation or water transfer.”
Not surprisingly, Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, THE top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee, loves the plan.
“The Obama administration listened to all perspectives and developed a final rule that will help guarantee safe drinking water supplies for American families and businesses and restore much-needed certainty, consistency, and effectiveness to the Clean Water Act,” she said in a statement.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise said:
“EPA’s attempt to redefine ‘navigable waterways’ to include every drainage ditch, backyard pond, and puddle is a radical regulatory overreach that threatens to take away the rights of property owners and will lead to costly litigation and lost jobs. The House is committed to fighting back against this radical policy, which is why we passed bipartisan legislation earlier this month to stop the EPA in their tracks from moving forward with this misguided proposal. It’s time for President Obama’s EPA to abandon these radical proposals, all in the name of protecting wetlands and waterways, that instead will only lead to more American jobs being shipped overseas at the expense of the American economy.”

GOP RALLYING TO SAVE OBAMA’S SECRET TRADE DEAL
It is an understatement to say that there is a certain amount of distrust between Congressional Republicans and President Obama. This distrust is most acute on the issue of Obama’s executive powers.
Yet, inexplicably, Republican leaders are striving to grant Obama additional executive powers. More baffling is the fact that the public has no idea how these additional powers will be used or to what end.

JUDGE: CHILD RAPIST ‘DID NOT INTEND TO HARM’
In one of the most shocking decisions in recent memory, a California judge reduced a child rapist’s sentence from a mandatory 25 years to 10, claiming that the longer sentence would constitute “cruel and unusual punishment.”
Superior Court Judge M. Marc Kelly informed an Orange County jury that 20-year-old Kevin Jonas Rojano-Nieto, who sodomized a three-year-old girl at his home last June and covered her mouth so she could not call back to her mother, who was calling to her, “did not intend to harm” the child, adding, “there was no violence or callous disregard for the victim’s well-being.”

this is what immigration "reform" is about
Dem. Rep: Amnesty Fight Will Decide Who Controls Country for Next 30 Years
An Oregon Democrat believes that the fight for amnesty for illegal immigrants is the “civil rights battle” for millennials that will decide who controls the the country for the next three decades.
“Immigration reform is probably the biggest issue of the 21st century,” Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) reportedly said at an “Immigration Day Action” event this weekend. “It will decide who is in charge of this country for the next 20 or 30 years.”
According to the Portland Tribune, Schrader made his remarks at an event that was sponsored by Causa, a prominent Oregon pro-amnesty group, and he compared today’s amnesty fight to the civil and voting rights movements in the 1960s, saying the amnesty movement is “the civil rights battle for the younger generation.”
“They, too, had a different background — different ethnicity, different race — and yet they had rights to participate in this country of ours that had been denied them,” he reportedly told the gathering at Chemeketa Community College. “This is what is at stake now for a lot of you and your families. I feel a kinship and a need to support all people who had an opportunity to come to this great country.”
As Breitbart News has emphasized, though, “the civil rights movement of the 1960s was about ensuring that black Americans received all of the rights they were due as citizens of the United States while today’s pro-amnesty movement is about demanding full rights for non-citizens who entered the country illegally.”
Oregonians for Immigration Reform, which has opposed Obama’s executive amnesty, acknowledged that “immigration built the foundation and wove the fabric of our sovereign nation,” but emphasized that it “is concerned about the utter disregard for existing United States immigration laws.”
“A sovereign American nation has both the right and the responsibility to limit immigration and control its borders,” the group reportedly said.
The White House on Monday asked for a stay of a federal judge’s injunction against Obama’s executive amnesty while it readies its appeal. Judge Andrew Hanen last week issued an injunction after a majority of states sued the Obama administration over its executive amnesty. As the Tribune noted, though, Oregon, whose progressive voters overwhelmingly rejected driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants last November, was not one of those states. Oregon actually joined 11 other states and Washington, D.C. to file a brief in support of Obama’s executive amnesty.
Schrader also predicted that since “Republicans are desperate” to get Hispanic votes, they would soften their position on comprehensive amnesty legislation. But as Breitbart News detailed, an Eagle Forum report last year “concluded that massive amnesty legislation would be ‘suicide'” for the conservative movement and the Republican Party:
As Eagle Forum President Phyllis Schlafly noted, although “a Harris poll found that 81% of native-born Americans believe schools should teach patriotism,” 50% of recent immigrants do not want their children to be “taught to be proud of America.” Schlafly said that means new immigrants will be offended when conservatives emphasize patriotism and assimilation.
The Eagle Forum report concluded that, though “Republican outreach to Asian and Latino voters” is “critical,” Republicans “can never turn liberal-leaning immigrants and their adult children into supporters of limited government faster than the current high level of legal immigration (one million a year) is bringing in new liberal voters.” The report found that new immigrants “and their adult children are significantly more liberal than the average American voter on a host of policy issues, including the size of government, Obamacare, affirmative action, gun control, greater environmental regulation, and other issues championed by the Left.
Calls to legalize illegal immigrants, whom Americans opposed to amnesty have referred to as “undocumented Democrats,” also turn off white working-class voters. As Democrats noted in their autopsy report of the 2014 midterm elections, which curiously did not mention the impact that Obama’s proposed executive amnesty had in giving Republicans back control of Congress, white working-class voters have been abandoning the party.
“In order to win elections, the Democratic Party must reclaim voters that we’ve lost including white Southern voters, excite key constituencies such as African American women and Latinas, and mobilize the broadest coalition of voters possible to not only recapture state houses but also Congress,” the report concluded. “In order to better understand how to bring this large coalition together, the Task Force recommends — in tandem with the National Narrative Project — that the DNC’s research delve more deeply into the barriers that keep people from identifying with, and supporting, Democratic candidates. This also includes working to better understand drop o? and independent voters.”
If white-working class voters continue to abandon Democrats en masse because of issues like amnesty, the party will need new voters to replace them. Perhaps that is why Democrats have gone all-in on Obama’s executive amnesty–even uniting to filibuster the House’s Homeland Security funding bill over it–and comprehensive amnesty legislation.

Video: Americans Want Obama to Repeal the Bill of Rights
Respondents blithely agree that liberties should be completely eviscerated in the name of fighting ISIS
I realize this is, basically, a prank but I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
by Paul Joseph Watson | January 26, 2015
Beachgoers in San Diego blithely agreed that President Barack Obama should be given the power to completely repeal the Bill of Rights in the name of fighting ISIS in another disturbing insight into the unthinking malaise of many Americans.
Told by media analyst and author Mark Dice that Obama had announced he was to repeal the Bill of Rights in order to “help make sure that we can keep everybody safe here in the homeland,” almost all the respondents agreed that eliminating constitutional rights was perfectly reasonable.
Asked, “Is that the right decision – should we get behind Obama to make sure the ISIS threat doesn’t rear its head here in America?,” one man responded, “Yeah I would agree with that,” before adding, “Only time will tell whether it’s the right or wrong decision,” agreeing with Dice that Obama’s political advisors “know what’s best”.
When another woman was told that both Republicans and Democrats were supporting the move to repeal the Bill of Rights, she responded, “Well if they’re agreeing on something then maybe it is a good thing,” before Dice adds, “It’s what’s best for the new world order.” “Well, let’s do it, let’s get behind it” urges the woman.
Given “what happened overseas in Paris,” another man agrees that if the “experts” think the Bill of Rights should be repealed then Americans should support the move.
Dice then interviews a woman who “absolutely” supports the move to repeal the Bill of Rights “for our own good” and to stop ISIS attacks. The woman then admits she is drunk and probably shouldn’t be doing interviews.
Another man unflinchingly expressed his view that it would be “best for the country” to repeal the Bill of Rights and “modernize” the new world order. “That sounds great to me,” he exclaims.
“Whatever he wants to do it’s probably best for the country,” agrees another woman before adding, “Go Obama!”
Dice’s video once again underscores how Americans will dispense with critical thinking and go along with virtually anything if asked about it in a calm and assertive manner. Note how Dice nods his head as he is asking the question, prompting instantaneous fealty and obsequiousness from each individual.
Last week, Dice also trolled San Diegans by telling them that Martin Luther King, who was murdered nearly 47 years ago, had just died. Instead of correcting him, the respondents went on to concur with several other erroneous claims, such as King being the first African-American to walk on the moon and the first African-American to appear on Mt. Rushmore.
The beachgoers seem to be particularly fervent about relinquishing constitutional rights. In number of separate videos, Dice gets them to agree to repealing the 1st amendment, the 4th amendment and the 5th amendment.
In another segment, college students sign a petition to imprison all registered gun owners, while in another video San Diegans support a move to confiscate guns from Tea Party members and repeal the 2nd amendment.

A Doomsday Plane Reminder: Nuclear Weapons Haven't Gone Away
The following is cut/paste from Forbes, if nothing else read the last paragraph.
The article begins:
Here’s a news item you may have missed over the holidays. The “doomsday planes” are being upgraded. Four E-4B flying command posts that would be used by U.S. leaders to manage military operations in a nuclear war will receive communications upgrades to enhance their “connectivity” during a conflict that could spell the end of civilization as we know it.
The reason you may have missed the story is that almost nobody besides InsideDefense.com reported it. National media were too busy covering more weighty matters like the efforts of North Korean agents to suppress a Sony film farce that insults the Dear Leader, and the attack on a French satirical magazine by a motley crew of extremists. How could nuclear Armageddon compete with that?
In fairness, the proposed upgrades to the “national airborne operations center” are just part of a routine reprogramming request that the Pentagon has submitted to Congress. But how often does any facet of the nation’s nuclear complex see the light of day in national media? Other than cheating scandals and an occasional misplaced weapon, the media have ceased paying attention to the most likely way in which America might one day disappear forever.
America’s military hasn’t. One of the four doomsday planes is kept on continuous alert and manned at all times. The planes are designed to stay airborne as long as a week with aerial refueling. All of the on-board equipment is hardened against nuclear effects, including the cockpit windows which are covered with mesh similar to that on your microwave oven. If called into service because of a nuclear crisis, the heavily modified Boeing 747s could each carry a crew of over a hundred specialists for managing the conflict, with communications transmitted through satellite uplinks and a wire antenna trailing five miles behind the plane. If the president and defense secretary have been killed, there are plans in place for devolving command to the most senior official still available.
U.S. military planners take this threat so seriously that when the president goes overseas, one of the doomsday planes always follows. It needs to be nearby at all times, as does the military aide within a few yards of the president carrying nuclear launch codes and communications gear. Similar provisions have been made in Russia, which maintains most of its intercontinental ballistic missiles on a high state of alert for fear of losing them in an American first strike.
The Russians are improving the survivability of their long-range missiles by deploying more of them on mobile launchers that can’t be targeted as easily as fixed silos. But you probably haven’t heard about that either, so let me tell you a bit about them. Most of the missiles will likely be equipped with four warheads that can be independently targeted. We don’t know what the explosive force of each warhead is, however a typical yield for the Russian strategic force is around 500 kilotons — equivalent to half a million tons of conventional high explosives.
There’s nothing conventional about nuclear weapons, though. When a conventional munition is exploded, it heats the immediate vicinity by a few thousand degrees. The heat of a nuclear blast at its center is more akin to tens of millions of degrees. So if one of those 500-kiloton warheads is exploded a mile above Boston or Dallas, everything within a one-mile radius is destroyed, heavy damage extends to three miles, and fires will be widespread out to five miles. Not that it will matter to most of the people near ground zero — they will be killed immediately by blast effects or a wind-spread firestorm that expands faster than they can escape (initial wind speed: 700 miles per hour). People further away will linger longer before succumbing to the effects of prompt and delayed radiation. Electronic devices will be shut down for a hundred miles in every direction due to the electromagnetic pulse generated by the blast.
And that’s just the effects from one nuclear warhead. Russia has over 2,000 nuclear warheads capable of reaching America, a fact that will not change materially if pending arms-control agreements are implemented. That’s actually a big improvement from where things stood at the end of the Cold War, when Russia had over 40,000 strategic and tactical nuclear weapons in its arsenal; the number has shrunk by 90% today if you don’t count the weapons awaiting disassembly.
However, there things are likely to sit for the foreseeable future, because as you undoubtedly have heard, Washington and Moscow aren’t getting along these days. In fact, the relationship is going so poorly that many in the Russian capital fear an attack from the West, which is one reason why strategic rocket forces are kept on a high state of alert. The likelihood of new arms agreements in such circumstances is not high. Besides, U.S. arms-control strategy is grounded in a series of assumptions about how to stabilize the strategic balance that requires giving Russia an “assured destruction” capability against America, so arms agreements aren’t going to eliminate the specter of nuclear war. U.S. military experts figure that if the arsenals on each side fall much below a thousand “deliverable” warheads, cheating would be encouraged by the prospect of achieving military advantage in a future nuclear exchange.
Thus the main protection Americans have against Russian nuclear aggression today is Moscow’s awareness that the U.S. force could ride out a surprise attack and then retaliate by laying waste to the Motherland. That strategy appears likely to work well as long as Russian leaders are rational and don’t make miscalculations in a crisis. If they are crazy, or prone to mistakes, or lose control of their arsenal during a period of instability — well, then all bets are off. You see, a corollary assumption of the way the U.S. currently practices nuclear deterrence is that America’s own homeland can’t be well-defended. That might make Russians worry about the credibility of their deterrent, leading to a destabilizing arms race.
So here we are, apparently doomed to live with the possibility of nuclear war indefinitely. Just ten of the warheads in the Russian arsenal, optimally targeted, could collapse the U.S. electric grid. Fifty would be sufficient to render uninhabitable every U.S. city with a population of over half a million souls. Two hundred would effectively wipe out the U.S. economy, destroying all major transportation, communications, medical and financial networks. There is no guarantee that the nation could ever recover from such a catastrophe (maybe China could pick up the pieces).
Why doesn’t this story get more attention, since it’s the only manmade threat that really could wipe out our civilization? One possible reason is that people think nuclear war is very improbable – a failure of imagination, as Thomas Friedman put it after the 9-11 attacks. Another reason, perhaps, is that they’ve simply gotten used to the danger, and prefer not to think about the unthinkable. But a third possibility, which would be worth testing, is that a majority of Americans believe they are defended against nuclear attack, even though in the common-sense definition of that term they are not.
Somehow, Americans have arrived at a time in their history when they spend hundreds of billions of dollars shoring up the security of countries on the other side of the world, but have almost no protection against the one danger that could obliterate everything they cherish. This isn’t just a catastrophe waiting to happen, it is a political cause waiting to be embraced.
