Newly, so you are buying gold with Canadian dollars? I love it! Maybe I should go skiing in Whistler after all.....
I was hoping for a stock play in there somewhere, but I don't think there is much of one. Closest I can get is GS = blood sucking. Only kidding.
Anyone here know what the deal is with the movie New Moon? I stopped last night in Vacaville at a SBUX which is in a small shopping center anchored by a movie theater. The place was jam packed. Not a parking space around with many folks waiting for the midnight showing.
This oldster is not up on the buzz for this. I imagine if it is a stock play we are too late but a push up could be a short.....
Do you really think age slows our ability to trade and keep up with posts? (I'm looking for some excuses and rationalizations....)
I thought the market would be a little more perky today, with more sideways action. It looks like we will have to wait for the typical Monday rise.
OT Snow on Mauna Kea, where the observatories are (although not open to the public). High elevation almost 13,800. We were supposed to go up there - at least to the visitor's center but the road was closed. Apparently the locals go skiing up there and it is quite the scene.
It seems that many folks who move to Hawaii get bored and want to return to the mainland. Selling homes right now is tough there too. I was amazed by the people who build on the old lava flows. These folks get their water by a catchment system. If they don't catch enough they must send for a water truck.
I didn't get to Waipo canyon but when I read the description I thought of you escaping there, but you would have to be a strong rower to get to your gold holdings outside the US. Waipo sounds like the descriptions I got of Zayante Canyon near Santa Cruz in the late 60s - 70s. Who knows maybe even today....
Newly, you are the true traveler in this group. My trips are typically to the same places. NY in Dec again.
OT, I'm not much of a picture taker and my computer set up is too slow these days to post pictures. Maybe one day when i get it figured out.
I did see a white Pantera while at Costco there. So I was thinking of all of you here, especially the guy that owns a red one. LOL
BTW, Although I loved my trip, the weather wasn't so wonderful. Snow is following me on my excursions (NY in Oct too). I'm leaving for Chicago on Saturday, so beware any travelers to that neck of the woods....
Newly, Hawaii is lovely, but can be pricey. Although some retirees claim they can live cheaper there than CA. Not the stuff tourists need though, - food and gas.
Hey Newly, I'm having trouble keeping up with stuff these days. Being in Hawaii didn't help. :)
My understanding is that there is a test underway of pricing options in $.01 increments. That is why it is limited to certain securities.
Close on the Highs
Watch because COTH is unusual for a Friday as of late...
There is level zero, with buying and selling options I think. To short something you need level one. Naked is level 3.
Aside from the tax question, ROTHs are great for estate planning purposes as well. Your heirs will LOVE you!
It just seems to be there are better short ideas right now than REITs.
It is a nice surprise to find you back posting again. I hope you can stay with us for a long time.
The rug may be pulled but not as much as many of you are hoping as far as REIT share prices go. In this low interest rate environment, people seem to love the dividends that are paid out, even if some of it is in stock.
Newly, from what I gather, any flu sypmtoms are being catorized as H1N1 regardless of if they were verified with a swab or not. In addition, for most people, especially boomers, the symptoms are astonishing mild for a flu, including lack of fever.
It is possible that I had it but never went to the doctor. I know of several others who had it - some verified, some not.
Zab this is why Ann Minch, created her video starting a Debtor's Revolt. She has gotten her credit card company to see the light.
PS, Congratulations to you! I'm catching up on a few posts and read that your cruise was a very special one. So nice to hear happy news.

Fine article. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Joe, between the markets, flooding, and now repair, you have a lot on your plate. Plus you pick these challenging but apparently rewarding preferred plays. You rock! (as the kids would say!)
I thought Missouri was the show me state.
Solar names catching bids. I wonder whats up.
excellent job!
Good luck with the SCO, hatelosses, but I would be shaking in my boots. I caught T Boone Pickens talking $85 - $90 oil yesterday and that is with our crummy economy. Of course he would like it to be higher, but he isn't a dummy either. The other thing is holding on to any Ultra ETF especially these days with rule changes hanging over our heads with futures markets and the often discussed tracking error.
I think inventory numbers are coming out in about 10 mins. First pass test, if you will.
<<Joe, Larry and Shasta>> Is this like Moe, Curly and Larry? LOL
BTW, the ag stocks did well today and some might think they have put in a near term bottom. I have some POT, but I also liked it higher too.
Schiff was banging the table on POT.
Thanks, I hope your patience pays off. i was in but took my loss long ago. Every once in a while I think about getting back in but haven't so far.
Its not about the consumer. Its all about the dollar decline.
Thanks for sharing the good news for Eliz Blackburn. Do you still own GERN?
Wow, that would be incredible but kinda late for me. I guess your charts are giving you that #, but with some other folks long the TBT, I'm wondering if that will come to pass. Seems like a hell of a move.
Actually at around 10:30am they adjusted up from yesterday. Bastards! So, JO, do you still think there will be a further dip in the $TNX this month? Thanks.
fun read.
Newly should be living there by then, so we can visit her and see the games!
You're welcome, Mark
As far as closing out an option prior to expiration. Sometimes this is done after the event that is anticipated - in this case - earnings. Let's say ISRG goes up after earnings - your puts lose value but don't go to zero as you will have a few more weeks left prior to expiration. You might want to sell your puts after a favorable earnings result.
On the other hand, if ISRG dumps after earnings, you might want sell your puts for the gain in the option after you think the downtrend is over (especially if you might want to protect a long-term position in the stock). The puts will lose any time value they might have as you approach the expiration date.
Sometimes the best way to learn options is to do some small stuff in the beginning. Too bad ISRG is such a high dollar stock to train on. However, I think your efforts will be rewarded in reducing stress and risk in the long run.
By the way, kudos to you for doing this stuff in the wee hours.
Hi Mark, I'm not sure where there is a particular site to learn options. But the first thing to do is get approved by your broker to do options. A protective put is simply buying a put to protect a long position you have. 1 put equals 100 shares. Since you are looking to protect yourself for earnings pick a month for expiration after the earnings date. In this case you would select November or later. The more in the future you go the more expensive they are. Then you would have to select a strike price. Take a look at the option chain to familiarize what strike costs what. Put options increase in price the higher the strike (or exercise) price is.
There has been a lot of discussion on Joe Stocks thread about options. You might want to take a look there.
When you get more familiar you might want to mitigate the cost of that put buy selling a covered call. You cap your upside (if the stock goes above your strike price on a call it will be sold from your account for that strike price typically at expiration - the Saturday following the third Friday of the month) but depending on your circumstances, that might be a good thing.
When you buy or sell options you can always undo the position prior to expiration. Your decision will be based if the option is in-the-money and how much time if left in the option.
Of course there is some more to know but I threw a lot at you and I'm not sure what knowledge you have. This should get you started. Maybe some other folks here have some favorite sites they can share on options.
Some protective puts might be a better way of staying in. If they miss it could drop like a stone way below your stop. Just a thought even though the co sounds like they are firing on all cylinders.
I'm curious as to your plan with ISRG. Its a really scarey stock. Priced for perfection but when they deliver its to the moon.
Hi and Thanks BT, I spent about 2 grand about 6 years ago. I figure I could get something really fine for about that much but I would go a little higher if there is good reason to. Maybe I should do something that is more portable than my heavy old Dell (Latitude 810) and have a docking station (although I'm not sure how that works).
BTW, I've been on this board for many years. I don't post that often though. I guess I'm kinda shy. :)
OT I need a new laptop which I use as a desktop replacement about 40% of the time. Any recommendations? I'm not very computer savvy and frankly, I don't know how I decided on my current model other than it has a big screen (for a laptop).
<<He buys BRIC nation stocks, primarily Chinese, and his kids take Chinese language lessons, He believes, and so do I, that China is the center of the economic world NOW.>>
This sounds more like the guy who used to work for Soros and has his own fund. I think he moved to Singapore since China was too polluted
OT If I knew who you were, I wouldn't let you pay for your restaurant meal either. Thanks for your wonderful public service. Which reminds me, I was going to take a CPR class......
