GDX pinching super tight this morning...trying for a quick flip on my paper trading account.
That's what I was thinking too...catching em at the STP completes is great, but if you're sifting through 30 results, you also may miss a nice tall candle by just a few minutes.
Since I apparently have all the free time in the world without Facebook, I'm going to have a lot more fun playing with scans...LOL
NRG looks like it may be about to take off finally...keeps trying and keeps getting knocked down. I think this time may be successful.
Think or Swim is killing me...
Dunno what I did, but I market sold a few things for a profit and somehow I have $-1200 option buying power.
Kinda interesting since I only started the account with $500. LOL
Interesting results!
When running the scans, are we more inclined to look for the pinch forming, possibly needing more to complete (ie CCI negative, Trix < 0, etc) or should we be looking for the STP to be nearing completion (ADX's crossing positive, CCI spike, etc)?
I'm playing with the scan workbench on stockcharts.com again...running into an issue, maybe one of you is more familiar with how it all works out?
In my scan, I have:
AND [CCI(20) < 0]
But in my results, I'm getting stuff that on my chart the CCI hadn't dropped below 0 once in the past two days. Which tells me this is likely looking at hourly data perhaps? Does anyone if we can set the timeframe of chart it's looking at so we can set it to read through the 10-minute timeframe rather than hourly?
Morning all!
What are we watching today?
I hear you! Not sure how I'm still awake myself...been working 11-13 hour days all week. I'm used to going in at noon and being home for dinner and working all weekend. This 7am crap is for the birds. :-p
On the plus side, I've been trying to learn the ThinkorSwim platform. Lots to learn but there's some really neat features it offers that etrade doesn't.
GDX looked pretty good this afternoon...almost hit my calls. Will see if it carries that momentum into tomorrow.
We need to talk on here more after hours...I temporarily deactivated my Facebook today and am already going stir crazy. I keep trying to check it out of habit, I tried to make a post about how difficult it is not using FB (oh, the irony...), and then I got mad that I missed one of my best friend's posts that he was in a car accident today (but he's ok as is the girl who hit him). I need something to occupy my time! lol
Time to go install some games or something...
Morning!
Another loooong work day here...roofers say they'll be done today though. Sleeping in until noon tomorrow! hahaha
On my watch list for today...in my paper account just for fun...no real money invested:
I put low bids in on GDX, AMD, and XLE calls as well as 100 shares of RAD. These are not buy recommendations. Just me testing out various strategies. My track record says don't buy. LOL
Morning all! 13 hr day at work yesterday...13 hr day again today and possibly tomorrow...
Getting a new roof installed on the boss man's house.
Supplier delivering the shingles yesterday decided to try to lift a full skid up to the roof with his boom truck and (who was already looking like he hated his job while unloading supplies off the truck) ended up catching the gutter on the garage, ripping part of it off and then dumped the entire skid of shingles on the ground and left hoping the Mexican workers would take the fall for the damage but I was nearby when it happened and informed the their boss. Supplier now has to replace the skid of shingles and our gutter/expensive gutter guards and paint it to match if he can't get it exact.
Arghhh....and not a good arrrr. hahaha
OCN
Friday close: $3.44
Monday open: $3.44
Current high: $3.53
Chart looks good though, very nice STP this am...might still have more steam left.
BGCP
Friday close: $14.47
Monday open: $14.51
Current high: $14.82
Chart is looking white hot...I think this one it caught the tail end of the run and is about to cool down.
I'll shoot you a PM...right now it's just a test area and we're not discussing anything pertinent. Just playing with features to determine if it's a route we may want to take in the future. It will ultimately be Sam's decision where we go from there...I'm just throwing out some ideas to play with. Nobody's being kept in the dark though and no secret discussions are occurring...once a decision is made and everything is configured folks here will all be notified.
I agree...my buddy and his girlfriend were there when it happened. He said they were at the MGM when the shots started going off and they ran for their lives. A nice couple with a condo nearby let them take shelter with them until they cleared the scene.
They act like the shooter just snapped but this was VERY well planned and he apparently had class III firearms...something had to have really set him off. I'm going to be curious about his motive...reminds me a lot of Charles Whitman.
Hope your dad's ok!
If you can break that time down into hours from days, you will be golden... where are you building your custom scan engine/pulling the data from?
Yep, you can upload them via ihub somewhere but I find it's easier to just use a free host half the time...lol. I had that saved already so it was pretty easy to toss online.
Did all my settings and colors look correct? I thought I had triple checked it in the past, but never really bothered to verify it.

If any of you see any mistakes, let me know! lol
I agree...what's odd is in one of their examples I was reading it was testing for all stocks with an RSI over 70 and in the example, they said check your results and they should all be over 70. Not sure why ours aren't returning stuff that's still meeting our criteria...
Definitely a pain to deal with.
I'm sitting here researching advanced scans...it's looking like they only are letting people scan on a daily (or longer) timeframe. My guess is if they allow hourly...you gotta be someone close with them. Probably very server intensive if all their members were running scans on their databases searching through hourly data.
We'll get there!
Maybe we should play with a scan that's searching for the pinch right before it takes off... looking for a negative CCI, etc. Or possibly scan the previous day for being near bottom and in the same scan, look for the early indicators to reverse. Not sure how accurate we'll get though...
Argh had an idea I was going to post but realized it was going to have the same effect as the current scans...
I was thinking using something like [CCI(1) > 100] where it would only catch stuff above but no it won't. It'll just catch all tickers that had the CCI briefly spike above 100 even if for only a split second.
We'll figure this out...just gotta think outside the box for a bit.
That's just a test area for now so til we figure out what direction we're going we should probably stick to this or PM/email or we may all end up in different conversations lol
Don't wanna leave anyone out!
Is it free without the real-time data?
Sounds good...I'll brainstorm on this some and pick a buddy of mine's brain. There may be variables we can use that can act as a workaround by only returning results that are current without actually using any form of time variables.
I hear you! I upgraded my account to play around with the scans... is there any syntax that allows you to only see results over a specific time period?
ie. I want to see tickers CURRENTLY with an RSI over 70 and CCI > 100 (just using those as examples), but my results are showing me tickers that at some point that day met those qualifications but may not be meeting them any longer.
Great for catching past runs but not so great for catching current/future ones...lol
I'm getting the hang of these scans though...computer programming and web coding were my hobbies when I was in school so I should have some fun with this.
News must have broke on RAD...bad news that is...
Huge gap down, setting new 52 week low and may break under $2 at
this rate
Sorry to hear that, Kim...I lost my mom when I was 16, but it doesn't matter how old you are, it never really makes it any easier.
If that's what happens, you just gotta give him some time to grieve...if he's got any hobbies he likes to do with friends, maybe try to get them to take a few days and get away from things. Friends always make things better when men are feeling troubled. It's easier to look weak in front of the guys than the woman you love.
Will keep your family in my thoughts.
Looks like it's awaiting email confirmation, then you should be good to go!
If you didn't get the email anywhere (it just says Forums as the sender currently...will change that later), let me know. I'd just manually switch you over, but you'll be my test dummy to make sure those emails are going out and functioning properly. lol
Paper Trading
I've been looking for a good paper trading simulator that can do options as well...I knew TD Ameritrade offered some paper trading capabilities but since I don't use my account, I never really gave it a look.
If you don't use TDA, you need to get an account...even if you have zero intention of putting money into it. When you register an account with TDA, you're also registered for their PaperMoney® deal. I haven't looked into it on my laptop so I'm not sure how it works on there, but if you use your mobile, it's accessible from their ThinkorSwim app. You can set limit orders, market orders, stop loss, etc...and trade options using it. It works IDENTICALLY to trading with real money, except it's just paper trading. They start you with $200,000 of paper money to play with so more than enough to restart until you develop consistency.
...now I just need to learn how to use the TOS app better. lol
But I highly recommend using this to practice until you can develop consistency and then switch to using real money whether it's with your TDA account or another brokerage.
ARR looks pretty good... was worried it may be near its peak according to the 2 day/10 min chart but 10 day/30 min looks like it's still headed north?
Check out PI...might be a nice play for next week. If I'm interpreting the chart properly, I'm thinking little more downward movement before it reverses or it may be in the process of a reversal now. ADX's were all beginning to cross positive but CCI still hasn't shot up yet...and sell volume looks to still have a bit more drying up to do before it takes off.

Thoughts?
Yep, when you change your quantity, it recalculates your commission... that one is based on my etrade so for 20 contracts, it would adjust to $14.95 in commissions.
It shows $4.95 by default as the quantity is 0.
Paper Trading Options
I just uploaded this rather than having to email it...
http://www.blackshireserver.net/files/options.xls
It's just a basic spreadsheet, but it gets the job done.
Check your email buddy...sent you a link to some test stuff...
Anybody else on here pretty good with web development/coding?
I think that would be pretty neat!
I have a decent sum of $$$ available here this weekend...was going to put some new shoes on my Jeep, but they're not bald just yet so I might reset my account. I had thoughts on a new strategy...does this sound effective?
Start with approx $500...avoid options while playing on my own and when I feel the time to buy, buy STOCK. Sell when it hits my intended "strike price" and see if I was correct on my timing or if my options would have expired worthless. It allows me to practice timing with real $$$ but if it tanks or trades sideways for a week or two I can either sell for a far smaller loss or sit on it another week or so to hop out even.
Paper trading is tough...I do have a spreadsheet to use for paper trading. If anyone wants it, post or PM me your email address and I'll send it your way. All the formulas are already entered so you just plug in your quantity and buy/sell prices and it figures out your gain/loss for you. You'll just need to edit the commission formulas to match your brokerage's commissions.
A.B.S. ?
Will definitely be willing to help!
Awesome...I'll have to upgrade my Stockcharts account to allow scans at some point.
If RAD flies here this week (or next), I am hoping it will leave me with enough cash to start my account over fresh. Fingers are crossed!
Long time no talk, man! This board is awesome!
I've got 7 $3 calls left for Sept 29th...hope a deal comes through next week! I won't get rich on these calls but hoping it gives me enough $$$ to start fresh again.
Gotta put some new tires on the Jeep here soon...bye bye $600 of free $$$ :(
I'm thinking one thing that may also help when our accounts are low...when we buy in, don't go all in right away but rather keep enough $$$ free to average down if we jumped the gun. I got stuck losing money on $2.50 calls this week because I had a $.21 average. Had I left some cash available, I could have averaged down enough last week to catch a jump and get out even or with a small gain.
Either way, my timing and patience are improving and I'm feeling much more confident reading the charts. I need to work on refining my spreadsheet for paper trading so it's nice and simple and quickly/easily calculates gains and losses.
RAD picked up a few 9/29 $3 calls for $.08 as a gamble if we get a short squeeze...pricing was weird...ask was 3x as much for the weeks prior and even more after.
Yep, I ran outta money...been stuck with those 9/15 $2.50 and $3 RAD calls for weeks.
Was hoping to see a jump even just to somewhere near my break even price so I'd have a couple hundred to play with but I've been down about 80% since mid August. Going back to paper trading after this. I've got a spreadsheet I'm working on to make paper trading a bit easier. Just gotta revise it a little more so it's nice and streamlined.
Surprisingly there are no apps for paper trading options...grrr...lol
