?Green Asset International Inc., which targets for acquisition cutting-edge medical marijuana and social media companies, is dedicating an unprecedented $100 million funding facility to develop the corporatization and rebranding of the cannabis industry's ancillary businesses, CEO Cheryl Shuman announced on Wednesday.
Shuman, who estimates at least a billion dollars in current ancillary business opportunities, will review and acquire legal businesses within the medicinal cannabis industry.
"As one of the world's most respected voices of the movement, it's Shuman's challenge and responsibility to remove the negative stigma and stereotypes of the cannabis user," Green Asset said in a press release. "Real men and women in the corporate world are taking a stand to make a change by boldly 'coming out of the closet' to show their support and the validity of this great, growth-potential business by investing in the cannabis sector."
Green Asset announced the formation of the cannabis industry's first acquisition vehicle to take advantage of the $1.7 billion medical marijuana market. To further assist potential investors, Green Asset will host a series of symposiums to share information and present opportunities.

?The company said it plans to target for acquisition cutting-edge medical marijuana and social medical companies, with a focus on consolidating those sectors. The funding agreement is broad and allows Green Asset to fund its objective of finding and acquiring established companies in expanding medical and social media fields and consolidating them for maximum efficiency and profitability.
Green Asset said it will target for purchase "profitable and successful companies that need more capital to reach their full potential."
"This creates a wonderful opportunity for entrepreneurs and smart investors to be on the ground floor of this exciting and groundbreaking industry," Shuman said. "There are great financial rewards coupled with a chance to be involved in a hot ticket business that is on the cutting edge.
"The beautiful thing about the cannabis plant is that it not only has the ability to heal a multitude of illnesses, it also has the power to heal the economy by creating desperately needed jobs that can grow small businesses," Shuman said. "Even in the face of this dismal national economy, the legal medical cannabis industry is growing and creating those jobs.

Cheryl Shuman, Green Asset International: "The therapeutic value of socialization and the building of community cannot be overstated"
?"There is a huge network of educated and sophisticated cannabis consuming investors that envision enormous rewards financially, environmentally and socially," Shuman said. "It's a win-win-win."
Many investment groups and businesses have shown serious interest in the great opportunities in this sector but haven't yet done so, partially due to a lack of information. Green Asset says it addresses this by educating with market data and knowledge.
Experts and investors agree that the medicinal cannabis industry has lots of promise. The formation of Green Asset, and the subsequent response to it, is indicative of the evolving nature of this industry and provides investors with opportunities, according to the company.
Green Asset says its symposiums are the next logical step for the medical cannabis industry. The symposiums follow in the footsteps of the many other industries that have educated investors on startups, such as the biotech and green industries.
The medical marijuana business has a five-year market potential of $8.7 billion and sales in 2011 were reported at $1.3 billion, according to the See Change Strategy market report.

She is an expert in anti-aging, alternative healthcare and community activism.
"The therapeutic value of socialization and the building of community cannot be overstated," Shuman said. "The right of patients to peaceably assemble -- to socialize and build family and community, and network and organize -- is paramount for their health and recovery.
"Our social networking platforms and development and marketing of alternative medical treatment options will provide fellowship for consumers, patients and activists internationally," Shuman said.
"We as a modern society can fiscally improve our budget by moving cannabis from the criminal sector into the lawful sector," Shuman said. "This is not a left or right issue -- it's really common sense.
"Regulation and taxation of marijuana could produce billions of dollars in additional tax revenue, as well as save on the enormous costs of law enforcement," Shuman said. "Bottom line is the prohibition of marijuana has been a fiscal fiasco.
"Green Asset's group of investors is the answer to resolving these issues," Shuman said. "Green Asset represents the largest financial commitment for cannabis related investment in history."

?Advocates Applaud Decision to Review Long Beach and Riverside Dispensary Regulation Cases
The California Supreme Court issued an order on Wednesday indicating it will review two controversial medical marijuana cases that have resulted in the suspension of several local dispensary ordinances across the state.
As a result of Wednesday's order, Pack v. City of Long Beach and City of Riverside v. Inland Empire Patient's Health and Wellness Ctr., Inc. have both been vacated in anticipation of the High Court's ruling. The Pack decision held that some dispensary regulations may be preempted by federal law and the Riverside decision held that localities could legally ban distribution altogether.
Americans for Safe Access
Joe Elford, ASA: "These cases were very problematic for patients and their ability to safely and legally access a medication that works for them"
?"These cases were very problematic for patients and their ability to safely and legally access a medication that works for them," said Joe Elford, chief counsel of Americans for Safe Access (ASA), a medical marijuana advocacy group. "We're very pleased that local governments will now be unable to use appellate court decisions to deny patients access to medical marijuana in their own communities."
Arguing that Pack was erroneously decided, ASA, along with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), and the County of Santa Cruz filed a brief on December 12 requesting that the California Supreme Court review the case.
"The medical marijuana community applauds the Supreme Court's decision to hear both cases, and hopefully, this will finally give cities in California the right to regulate medical marijuana in their communities, since many cities have chosen to ban or refuse to regulate medical marijuana because it's federally illegal," said Cheryl Shuman of KUSH Magazine.
According to Bob Selan, CEO of KUSH Magazine, the California Supreme Court has recognized that states' rights issues are at the forefront of the safe access provisions that were inherent in Proposition 215, voted into law by Californians back in 1995.
The laws which were further codified in SB 420 in 2003 by the California Legislature have been the subject of several controversial lawsuits pitting the state's medical marijuana laws against federal cannabis prohibition.

Cheryl Shuman of KUSH Magazine (with bullhorn) inspires a Long Beach Collective Association (LBCA) medical marijuana rally at Long Beach City Hall.
?Although the Pack decision, issued in October of last year, contradicted other appellate court rulings, several cities and counties across California have used it as a reason to suspend regulatory ordinances or completely ban local distribution. In its latest crackdown on medical marijuana in California, the U.S. Justice Department has even cited the Pack decision as a reason why localities should not adopt distribution licensing ordinances.
One of the cases that contradicted Pack was the Riverside ruling issued in November, which held that medical marijuana distribution was not preempted by federal law, but cities could lawfully ban it. However, now that both decisions are out of play, local governments will now have less cover with which to implement or continue such bans.
"The Pack decision is a dead letter and can no longer be used to defy the implementation of state law," Elford said.
It will likely be at least a couple of years before the Supreme Court rules on the cases. In the meantime, advocates will be urging their local governments to adopt regulatory ordinances that establish the means by which California's hundreds of thousands of patients can obtain a medicine that is legal under state law.
A third medical marijuana dispensary case, People v. G3 Holistic, was also granted review by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Medical marijuana advocates hold a rally outside Long Beach City Hall
?A coalition of advocates and public officials filed an amicus "friend of the court" brief on Monday, asking the California Supreme Court to take the appeal of Pack v. City of Long Beach, a controversial medical marijuana decision from early October.
The coalition, which includes Americans for Safe Access (ASA), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), as well as the County of Santa Cruz, is also seeking outright depublication of the Second District ruling.
The Long Beach City Council decided in November to appeal the Pack decision to the California Supreme Court.
Advocates say the Pack decision, which held that certain provisions of the Long Beach ordinance were preempted by federal drug laws, is not final and has been widely misinterpreted by localities across California in hurried attempts to ban distribution and crack down on existing dispensaries regardless of their compliance with state law.
ASA
Joe Elford: "The Pack ruling contradicts three other appellate court decisions that have rejected federal preemption, indicating this fight is far from over"
?"The Pack ruling contradicts three other appellate court decisions that have rejected federal preemption, indicating this fight is far from over," said ASA Chief Counsel Joe Elford, coauthor of the amicus brief tiled on Monday. "We stand today in support of Long Beach and other cities' right to regulate medical marijuana distribution under state law."
Two published decisions from the Fourth District Court of Appeal -- County of San Diego v. San Diego NORML and Qualified Patients Association v. City of Anaheim -- and another from the Second District in City of Riverside v. Inland Empire Patient's Health and Wellness Ctr., Inc. have all held that California's medical marijuana law is not preempted by the federal Controlled Substances Acte (CSA).
In June, coalition members ASA, ACLU and DPA filed a brief before the Pack court arguing against federal preemption, but it was disregarded.
Monday's amicus brief argued that the Pack court got it wrong and the Long Beach ordinance was "well within the scope of the government's historical police powers as it concurs criminal law enforcement, medical practices, and land use."
The amicus brief also asserted that by holding the ordinance preempted by federal law, the Pack court "gave the CAS greater preemptive effect than Congress intended or that the 10th Amendment allows," and "significantly undermined the authority of state and local governments to regulate in these critical areas."
"The Pack court did not entirely invalidate the Long Beach ordinance or any other dispensary ordinance in California," Elford said. "The ruling is also contradicted by other appellate courts, which would give localities pause before changing or rescinding their dispensary ordinances.
"The Pack court held that parts of the licensing scheme enacted by the City of Long Beach -- specifically provisions that granted permits through a lottery system at a significant, recurring see -- are preempted by federal law," Elford said. "However, the court made a distinction between a licensing scheme and an ordinance that would merely protect such facilities against local civil or criminal prosecution, leaving open the possibility that Long Beach could comply with the court's decision simply by making certain changes to its ordinance."
The California Supreme Court is expected to decide whether to review and/or depublish the Pack decision sometime in the spring of 2012.

LBCA
?The fate of the entire American medical marijuana community could depend on decisions made by the City of Long Beach. The recent court ruling of Pack v City of Long Beach could take cannabis medicine away from ailing citizens and lead to lost jobs, lost tax revenue, and increased crime rates.
On Wednesday, December 7, the Long Beach Collective Association (LBCA) submitted amendment language to the mayor, Long Beach City Council, and city attorney, which recommends language that would allow the current ordinance to remain functional under the evolving California law.
This "third option" was drafted by the LBCA's legal team at the request of Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal and several other council members at the November 1 council meeting.
The Kemp Group
Carl Kemp, LBCA: "This document amends the current ordinance in a way which we believe allows the City of Long Beach to be in compliance with the rulings in the 'Pack decision' and allows those collectives that were authorized under the current ordinance to continue to exist"
?"This document amends the current ordinance in a way in which we believe allows the City of Long Beach to be in compliance with the rulings in the 'Pack decision', and allows those collectives that were authorized under the current ordinance to continue to exist," said LBCA advocate Carl Kemp.
The City of Long Beach has already collected more than $700,000 from registered collectives and through their ordinance, required millions of dollars of construction to accommodate cultivation within the city. With some permits being issued and deadlines for construction plans being sent from the city, collectives believed they were on a course for legitimate existence in the City of Long Beach.
A repeal and ban would likely result in lawsuits that would result in costly claims and lawyers fees. LBCA said it would very much like to keep this out of the courtroom.
"The LBCA wants to make whatever contributions are legal to recoup the City's costs to regulate our collectives," said LBCA President Greg Lefian. "Where the law limits that participation, we are committed to contributing the balance of the current annual fee to worthy community causes, such as after school programs, youth sports, or care for the homeless."
Contrary to the federal claims, crime actually rises when medical cannabis dispensaries are closed down, according to one study by the RAND Corporation. The study showed an increase in crime after the City of Los Angeles closed 70 percent of local medical marijuana dispensaries. The study found a 59 percent overall increase in crime within 0.3 miles and a 24 percent increase within 0.6 miles of shuttered dispensaries in the 10 days following their closure, as opposed to the 10 days before.
RAND took the study offline after vociferous complaints from Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich's office. After all, science is inconvenient, isn't it?!
Cheryl Shuman
Cheryl Shuman, KUSH Magazine: "Counter to the claims of medical marijuana opponents, dispensaries increase neighborhood security and deter property crimes"
?Hypotheses to explain this increase include the loss of security provided by the dispensaries, reduced foot traffic in the area, and a change in police presence.
"Counter to the claims of medical marijuana opponents, dispensaries increase neighborhood security and deter property crimes," said Cheryl Shuman, director of public relations for KUSH Magazine. "This possible ban would backfire on the City, causing an increase in theft, breaking and entering, and assault.
"Medical cannabis is a safe and effective treatment option for many serious medical conditions, and patients should not be forced to purchase their medicine from criminals, drug dealers, and gangs, which will be their only point of access if the city forces dispensaries to close," Shuman said. "In addition, thousands of workers will be forced from their jobs in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the great depression."
"We believe this amended version maintains the City Council's original legislative intent to both provide for patients in need of medical marijuana, while concurrently protecting the community from an over-proliferation of collectives," Lefian said.
"Throughout the document, we have sought to leave in place those restrictions originally included by the City Council," Lefian said. "And where there were 'requirements,' we have changed the language to read as restrictions, thereby honoring the Council's intent and comporting with Pack."
"Though it hasn't been easy over the last two years, the Long Beach City Council has demonstrated leadership in the area of creating legislation that legitimizes the needs of those in need of medical marijuana," Kemp said. "We took their request to come up with a third option seriously, and paid our legal team to come up with something we believe is a solid starting point.
LBCA
?"It is our hope that as this city's policy makers, they meant what they said at that meeting," Kemp said. "We know that City Attorney Shannon has never been a fan of collectives, but we believe it is his responsibility now, as it was in previous ordinance drafts, to carefully consider language that follows the Council's previously documented legislative intent."
The Long Beach city attorney plans to bring forward a recommendation to repeal and ban the existing ordinance on December 13. He has also asked the California State Supreme Court to rule on the Pack decision, and this request to ban and repeal would happen before the courts have even considered a ruling.
Prior to the Long Beach ordinance, approximately 100 collectives existed in the City of Long Beach according to KUSH Magazine. After the ordinance approving 28 authorized collectives in the city was finally voted on by Council, numbers dropped to fewer than 40.
Since the discussion of a repeal and ban, illegal collective numbers have begun to creep back up, suggesting that a ban in the city could lead to an explosion of noncompliant storefront operations.
Concerned citizens are urged to visit the website of the Long Beach Collective Association to get the latest updates and make a donation (early Wednesday afternoon, the site was still "under construction"). You can also get involved by becoming a fan at www.facebook.com/LBCollectiveAssociation.

?On Friday, four U.S. Attorneys in California announced a new federal policy in the state which would be counter to the Obama Administration's long-held policy of not interfering in state medical marijuana laws.
The new policy will target collectives operating within 1,000 feet of schools or parks, despite the fact that local zoning ordinances have often allowed collectives to operate as long as they were more than 600 feet from schools. It may also be used against providers who distribute in excess of a certain amount, whether or not those providers were acting in full compliance with state and local law.
"The Obama administration has lost its way on medical marijuana and is about to seriously anger millions of Americans," said Aaron Smith, executive director of the National Cannabis Industry Association. "For some inexplicable reason, they have suddenly decided to target providers who are faithfully complying with state and local laws and pay their taxes.
Cheryl Shuman
Aaron Smith, NCIA: "The Obama Administration is trying to destroy them"
?"Without citing any harm caused by these providers, the Obama administration is trying to destroy them, kill thousands of jobs and drive medical marijuana patients - and profits - back underground," Smith said. "This new policy favors the criminal market over legitimate, taxpaying businesses and is absurd."
Friday's announcement is another example of the Obama Administration's inexplicable attempts to keep the marijuana market underground and unregulated. In July, the Department of Justice issued the Cole memo, which said that medical marijuana providers could be -- and might be -- prosecuted vigorously.
This, along with a number of U.S. Attorney statements, resulted in Gov. Lincoln Chafee in Rhode Island officially putting the state's dispensary system on hold last week, and earlier this year resulted in Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire vetoing a bill which would have legalized and licensed dispensaries in that state.
The same U.S. Attorneys in California mentioned above are currently sending letters to landlords who rent to medical cannabis collectives, advising them that they are in violation of the law and could be prosecuted.
Earlier this week, the IRS just informed Oakland's Harborside Health Center, the largest dispensary in the world that it owes the federal government $2.4 million, based on an audit in which an arcane provision of the tax code was applied to the fullest extent possible.
In Colorado, the ongoing refusal of the Obama Administration to address the concerns of financial institutions with respect to working with medical cannabis providers has produced a crisis, with the last remaining bank in Colorado to work openly with medical cannabis providers dropping all of these clients last week.

West Coast Cannabis Expo
?Inspired by President Barack Obama with his American Job Act, the West Coast Cannabis Expo's organizers say it will be the very first to feature a Job Fair with career opportunities in the $1.7 billion legal medical marijuana industry.
The event launches this Friday, October 7, and continues through Sunday, October 9 at the Cow Palace - South Hall, located at 2600 Geneva Avenue in Daly City, just south of San Francisco.
The Job Fair idea came from the dynamic Cheryl Shuman, executive director of celebrity, media and public relations for KUSH Magazine and director of special projects for the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA).
"Working with KUSH Magazine, I see hundreds of job opportunities," Shuman said. "West Coast Cannabis Expo organizers are taking a more serious look by focusing on getting Americans back to work."
Shuman heads the list of more than 30 top speakers, entrepreneurs, activists and industry leaders participating in the speakers' program, including California State Senator John Vasconcellos, Stephen DeAngelo of Harborside Health Center, Debby Goldsberry of ARCH Collective, Dale Gieringer of California NORML and many others.

?"The beautiful thing about the cannabis plant is that it not only has the ability to heal a multitude of illnesses, it has the power to heal the economy by creating desperately needed jobs," Shuman said.
Sponsored by NCIA, the national trade association for the cannabis industry, the job fair will feature many local job opportunities within the growing medical cannabis industry.
"Even in the face of a dismal national economy, the legal medical cannabis industry is growing and creating jobs across the country," said NCIA Executive Director Aaron Smith. "The jobs showcased at this fair represent only the tip of the iceberg of a growing national industry."
Cannajobs -- a member-business of NCIA -- has been named as the exclusive service to execute the Job Fair mission at West Coast Cannabis Expo. Cannajobs specializes in working with companies that are looking for employes, affiliates, representatives and salespeople in the medical cannabis field. Job seekers are encouraged to bring their resumés and prepare for on-the-spot interviews.
Cheryl Shuman

?Companies lined up to participate in the Job Fair include Cannajobs, WeedMaps, Cannamist, Phototron, Versativa, IAMBUD, Jerome Handley Law, Sweet Leaf Collective, Simply Chronic, California Earth Supply, Cannabis Career Institute and many others, according to Shuman.
"Cannajobs' mission is to provide information about how to make the leap into the cannabis industry and match those seeking jobs in the industry with companies that need assistance," said Robert Calkin, CEO of Cannajobs. "These aren't just medical marijuana dispensary jobs; there are many attractive options available in this industry, from sales to growing to legal assistance to activism."
Cannajobs.com is a new online resource for cannabis jobs that aims to fill employment needs in the medical cannabis industry. The site offers free job posting and applications, and provides a free video conferencing system that allows online interviews, meetings and file sharing.
Cannajobs is also the home of The Circle, a free social networking platform where members can create groups for their businesses or interest, join live video conferences, and connect with others in the industry. Circle members cash conduct "CannaMeetings" and job interviews using the site's online videoconferencing technology.
At this event, Cannajobs will provide candidates with an honest assessment of their skill set and experience. They will also teach interested parties how to enter the industry, overcome skill gaps, develop compelling resumés, and make themselves attractive to cannabis employers.
Cannabis career candidates will complete a brief intake form and talk to a Cannajobs career counselor to determine which types of jobs match their preferences, if there are any immediate matches, or if they need additional experience or training to become better qualified for their target career.
Cannabis industry job seekers who attend the expo will have access to the Cannajobs.com website, where they may post their resumés and query job openings. They will also receive access to a free video conferencing room that they can use to network and promote themselves.
Businesses will be able to sign up with Cannajobs at no charge. They can also initiative free video conferences to promote their goods and services, as well as conduct interviews with prospective employees privately and efficiently.
"Cannajobs offers a valuable public service by offering information and guidance to anyone who wishes to move into the medical marijuana industry," Calkin said. "After the job fair, job seekers can continue their search for jobs on Cannajobs.com and interview for positions by using our free video conferencing room called The Circle."
Medical marijuana companies are urged to contact Cannajobs prior to the event to discuss their current hiring needs. "There is still room for companies in the medical marijuana industry to join the job fair," Calkin said. "It's best to contact us in advance, but since this is an informal event, you can also just come by our booth at the show and talk to potential employees."
The West Coast Cannabis and Music Expo will take place Friday, October 7 from 3 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, October 8 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, October 9 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cow Palace, located at 2600 Geneva Avenue in Daly City.
Single-day tickets are available for $23.25, and three-day passes can be bought for $45. The event is open to the public, but attendees must have a valid doctor's recommendation to enter to designated medicating area.
Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online at http://westcoastcannabisexpo.com/buytickets.html.

There has to be a Number One in every category. When it comes to pot rallies, Seattle Hempfest is the biggest and arguably the best on the planet.
The monster marijuana rally -- or "protestival," as organizer Vivian McPeak puts it -- is marking 20 years of existence with this year's event, held at Myrtle Edwards Park on the beautiful Seattle waterfront -- and for the first time ever, Hempfest is slated for three days.
The party begins at high noon on Friday, August 19 and continues until 8 p.m., then things start up again at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, lasting until 8 each night.
If you've never been to Seattle Hempfest before, the energy of hanging out with a couple hundred thousand like-minded people is just incredible. It's a gentle, uplifting vibe, and not something you ever forget.
This year's event features the legendary Kottonmouth Kings at 7 p.m. Friday on the Parker Memorial Main Stage, sure to be a huge crowd favorite. National Stereo Underground takes the Main Stage at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and local favorites the Herbivores will headline the Main Stage at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Countless other great and up-and-coming musical acts will be featured throughout the weekend, with the Seeley Memorial Stage and the Peter McWilliams Memorial Stage also featuring full slates of speakers and musicians. What this means is that any given time at Hempfest, you'll have the option of no fewer than three major stages.
Many of the biggest names in the cannabis movement will be on hand to speak during the weekend, including of course the legendary organizer Vivian McPeak, without whom these 20 years of Hempfest would never have happened.
In addition to McPeak, other marijuana luminaries speaking include NORML's Allen St. Pierre, MPP's Morgan Fox, Oregon NORML's Madeline Martinez, KUSH Magazine's Cheryl Shuman, state Representative and Congressional candidate Roger Goodman, marijuana activist/attorney Douglas Hiatt, Cannabis Culture's Jodie Emery, Harborside Health Center's Steve DeAngelo, West Coast Cannabis magazine's Ngaio Bealum, Congressman Dennis Kucinich, TV travel host/writer Rick Steves, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, Cal NORML's Dale Gieringer, The Hemp and Cannabis Foundation's Paul Stanford, the U.S. Marijuana Party's Wayward Bill, NORML founder Keith Stroup, YEP's Don Skakie, NAW's Alison Holcomb, Craig X. Rubin, and the Guru of Ganja himself, Ed Rosenthal -- and that's just to name a few.
A number of interesting Speakers' Panels will be featured on the Hemposium Music Stage throughout the weekend up until 3:45 p.m. each day, at which time musical acts will take over the stage.
I'll be on one of those panels, "Media - From Puns to the High Road," along with Morgan Fox, Ngaio Bealum, Russ Belville, and Shaun Apple.
For those of you who might want to see me speak (yeah, both of you), I'll be giving speeches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the following times and on the following stages. Keep in mind that all times are approximate, as stage schedules tend to be revised in the heat of the moment. You should show up early, and remember that you'll be negotiating through a huge crowd, so it'll take a bit of time to get from one end of the park to the other:
Steve Elliott speeches
• Friday, 3:50 p.m., Share Parker Memorial Main Stage
• Saturday, 3:50 p.m., Seeley Memorial Stage
• Sunday, 4:45 p.m., Peter McWilliams Memorial Stage

See you at Hempfest!

Cannabis has captured the attention of the world. From December 17-19, 2010, the Colorado Convention Center will be buzzing with thousands of medical marijuana experts and enthusiasts in what is being billed as the largest cannabis lifestyle convention to ever take place on planet Earth - KushCon II.
The NORML Women's Alliance fundraising weekend begins a day early with a business-to-business networking event sponsored by the Medical Marijuana Business Alliance and Kush Magazine on Thursday, December 16, where the elite of the cannabis industry will gather to celebrate the movement and to organize product and service giveaways expected to raise more than $100,000 for the charity.
The international media has extensively covered the "Stiletto Stoners" phenomenon, fascinated by professional women's use of cannabis. Celebrities like Melissa Etheridge and Alanis Morissette are putting a new face on this controversial plant.
Riding that wave, the national office of NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, announces the NORML Women's Alliance steering committee's first annual major fundraising weekend event at KushCon II.

?Heading up the steering committee for the fundraising weekend is former Beverly Hills NORML Executive Director Cheryl Shuman. Shuman is the director of public relations and media for the Kush brand including Kush Magazine, Kush Conventions and DailyBuds.com, a social media network for the cannabis community.
"It's my job to remove the negative stigma and stereotypes of a cannabis user," Shuman said. "Real women and men behind the marijuana reform movement are taking a stand to make a change by boldly coming out of the closet to educate the public at KushCon II."
Shuman brings 25 years of experience working with media, celebrities, marketing and health care in Beverly Hills. She found her passion in the cannabis movement since 1996, working as an activist and legal cannabis patient. Since using cannabis therapy, she has survived cancer and injuries from two car crashes.
"The therapeutic value of socialization and the building of family and community should not be underestimated," Shuman said. "The right of patients to peaceably assemble - to socialize and build family and community, and network and organize - is paramount for their health and recovery. KushCon II is the center of the universe for patients and activists."
Graphic: KushCon II
"We as a modern society can fiscally improve our budget by moving cannabis from the criminal sector into the lawful sector," Shuman said. "This is not a left or right issue -- it's really common sense. Regulation and taxation of marijuana could produce billions of dollars in additional tax revenue, as well as save on the enormous costs of law enforcement. Bottom line is the prohibition of marijuana has been a fiscal fiasco."
Among the more than 400 vendor booths spanning more than 300,000 square feet will be everything from extreme skateboarding demonstrations to local DJs and headline artist concert series.
KushCon II will have something for every member of the family including gourmet cannabis cooking demonstrations, cultivation experts, more than $100,000 worth of giveaways including a complete $46,000, 28-foot Growbots mobile growing system, blown glass, hydro lights, leather jackets, cannabis lifestyle clothing and more.
"This will be the place to finish your last minute Christmas (KushMas) shopping, or win some fantastic prizes," Shuman said.
The KushMas party will continue throughout the weekend with a daily concert series featuring artists and DJs such as the Flobots, The Dirty Heads, Mickey Avalon, Asher Roth, Mic Master Mike, Aaron Lewis of Staind, War, and former Santana lead singer Gregg Rollie.
This is the second time Kush Magazine and dailybuds.com have brought the cannabis convention to Denver. In April 2010, KushCon descended on the Denver Convention Center with thousands of patrons perusing hundreds of booths.
In addition to entertainment, KushCon II is really about the dissemination of information about the cannabis culture. There will be breakout rooms with speakers from within the medical cannabis industry and the cannabis movement, including growing expert Ed Rosenthal, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, U.S. Congressman Jared Polis, Matt Cook of the Colorado Department of Revenue, attorneys Rob Corry and Warren Edson, and Brian Vicente.
Medical information for patients about marijuana and its uses will be presented by Dr. Robert (Bob) Melamede.
Keynote speakers from NORML include founder Keith Stroup, Sabrina Fendrick, Greta Gaines, Anne Davis, Russ Belville and Cheryl Shuman. There will also be speakers from other activist and nonprofit organizations from around the world.
With all of the recent news about cannabis, Kush hopes to continue with efforts towards legalization.
"The cannabis movement is not just the 'Stiletto Stoners' or the medical marijuana patients or the stereotypical Deadheads from the 70s," Shuman said. "It includes a broad cross section of Americans who should have the right to responsibly use marijuana without the fear of prosecution."
"As prohibition of alcohol finally ended, it is our goal to have the same outcome -- end the prohibition of marijuana," Shuman said. "We invite you to join us in building a better informed, kinder and more compassionate world."
KushCon II will be cannabis free and open to the public (no medical marijuana card required to enter), with all ages welcome.

HempCon 2010 Los Angeles is already a huge success, with thousands of festive attendees on the convention floor. Stay tuned, San Francisco... your turn is in April.
?A three-day celebration of all things cannabis opens Friday in downtown Los Angeles.
HempCon 2010 Los Angeles, at the L.A. Convention Center, will host exhibitors from across the country who'll be showcasing products and services relating to medical marijuana and the movement to legalize pot, reports the Los Angeles Daily News.
Smoking and marijuana won't be allowed at the event.
"There's not going to be any cannabis -- but we're trying to spread the word," said Cheryl Shuman, executive director of Beverly Hills NORML 90210, a branch of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Cheryl Shuman, NORML 90210: "This is our time"
?According to Shuman, more than 150,000 people are expected to attend.
"Los Angeles is the heartbeat of the entire cannabis community," Shuman said. "Everyone looks to Southern California for leadership and guidance. Now is the time to come out of the closet."
"I think what you'll find is that the negative stereotype of the laid-back stoner is wrong," Shuman said. "People who need and use medical marijuana include business professionals, lawyers, doctors, teachers and corporate types."
HempCon is showcasing booths from medical marijuana collectives, retail vendors, graphic and Web designers, appliance manufacturers and cultivation experts, according to Shuman.
Plenty of food stalls are available in case the munchies strike.
Actor Cheech Marin also will be there. He's promoting his new documentary, Light Up America.
Marin, who was at the Convention Center Thursday for a news conference, said he supports "across-the-board" legalization with restrictions similar to those of alcohol, according to NBC Los Angeles, who apparently thought it would be cool to use the name "Toke of the Town" as their headline without bothering to link to this site.
"It's a movement whose time has come. It's inevitable," he said. "Society since the Bible has needed a socially acceptable intoxicant, and here it is. This has been our drug of choice. It's... much healthier, has more benefits than alcohol."
"My goal is full legalization for responsible adult use so California can save its economy," Shuman said.
"We have such momentum now. This is our time."

Professional women across America and the world are coming out of the cannabis closet.
?The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), the nation's oldest cannabis advocacy organization, today announced the launch of the NORML Women's Alliance.
The NORML Women's Alliance is a nonpartisan coalition of educated, successful, high-profile professional women who believe that cannabis prohibition is a self-destructive and hypocritical policy that undermines the American family, sends mixed and false messages to young people, and destroys the principles of personal liberty and local self-government, according to the organization.
"The prominent role of women in the effort to end marijuana prohibition is pivotal, necessary, and long overdue," said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of NORML. "According to recent national opinion polls by Gallup and others, the dramatic rise in the public's support of marijuana law reform is being driven primarily by an increase in support among American's women."
According to St. Pierre, "The NORML Women's Alliance will bring a contemporary approach to the public policy debate, and will proudly represent the interests of modern, mainstream women who believe that the negative consequences of marijuana prohibition far outweigh any repercussions from marijuana consumption itself."
NORML.org
Film producer Ann Druyan, charter member of the NORML Women's Alliance
?Charter members of the NORML Women's Alliance include NORML Foundation chair and film producer Ann Druyan; "Republican mom for marijuana," attorney and political activist Jessica Corry; editor Shelby Sadler; best-selling author and Time magazine columnist Barbara Ehrenreich; Beverly Hills NORML director Cheryl Shuman; NORML Foundation board member Jeralyn Merritt, Esq.; cannabis activist and author Mikki Norris; Cannabis Action Network and Berkeley Patients Group founder Debby Goldsberry; NORML board member and director of Oregon NORML Madeline Martinez; law professor Marjorie Russell; and former ACLU president Nadine Strossen.
The founding group of women also includes physicians, researchers, business leaders, editors, publishers, mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers.
The NORML Women's Alliance holds the following positions:
1. The NORML Women's Alliance believes that the fiscal priorities of marijuana prohibition are wasting billions of dollars on a failed policy.
2. The NORML Women's Alliance believes that marijuana prohibition violates states' rights, and improperly expands the reach of government into the families and personal lives of otherwise law-abiding citizens.
3. The NORML Women's Alliance advocates for an open, honest conversation about marijuana with America's youth that is void of all propaganda and misleading information.
4. The NORML Women's Alliance endorses the science-based evidence regarding the therapeutic applications of medical marijuana as well as the continuation of research into the subject.
5. The NORML Women's Alliance strongly opposes the sexual exploitation and objectification of women in pot-culture and business marketing.
"A marijuana policy that fosters children selling marijuana en masse must immediately change, and be replaced by one that effectively stops children from trafficking in marijuana," said Sabrina Fendrick, coordinator of the NORML Women's Alliance.
"The NORML Women's Alliance seeks to replace a failed, tax coffer-draining and child endangering 73-year-old cannabis prohibition with functional, tax-producing and youth-friendly cannabis policies consisting of legal and social controls that are not at all dissimilar to our existing, common-sensible and ever-evolving alcohol policies," Fendrick said.

Absolutely Beverly Hills Cannabis Club Events - I'll post the info on the website.
Checking out the CANNACig Testimonial on You Tube now for inspiration when I shoot mine :)
Wonderful! I can't wait LOL :) Sheesh!
Cheryl Shuman Bio from 2010 - Some of you have requested that I post additional information about myself. I found this bio from 2010. It needs to be updated of course, but perhaps it will allow you to get to know me a bit.
Best,
Cheryl
Who Is Cheryl Shuman?
"If You Knew Exactly How Much Time You Had Left to Live Life As You Know It.......How Would You Live the Rest of Your Life?
On December 18, 2006, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was told that I would not live to see my birthday. I have learned to live each day as if it might be my last. To best describe my "life story" it's somewhat like a fairy tale, soap opera and chick flick combined in a video diary that I'm sharing with you over the internet. My goal is to get to know you while I can and make the best of every minute that I have now. I grew up as a child of poverty with one of those "rags to riches stories". The media has referred to me as the "Real Life Beverly Hillbilly". I hope that it will be inspirational.
There's a saying that when you're dying, your entire life flashes before your eyes. In my case, I've worked in television and celebrities practically my entire adult life. I started keeping a video journal in 1974 to record my thoughts and experiences. I was always too tired to write in a journal, but I found my video camera to be my best friend and confidant'. It is my hope that as I review some of my history, memories and experiences with you that you will learn, laugh and grow and perhaps even be inspired by being a part of my life as I embark upon this journey with you. Because I don't know what my future holds, my planis to simply try to live each and every day to the fullest extent possible and to share that with you It is my sincere hope that we can become friends and get to know each other. It is also my hope that I can add something positive to your life through my experiences.
You'll be getting to know much more about me personally as we continue this "Video Diary" experience. I must stress, that this project, the experiences and videos are all real. There is nothing scripted. I am NOT now NOR HAVE I EVER BEEN AN Actress! I've never had a desire to act. I have worked in television, yes, but my work in television has been that of what is considered to be an "expert" commentator in my respective fields of work.
I was born near the tri-state border of West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio referred to as the gateway to Appalachia. "General Hospital" ironically the same name as a popular daytime Soap Opera was the stage for my delivery to the world in Portsmouth, Ohio. Located on old Scioto Trail surrounded by Shawnee Indian burial grounds, this humble beginning is my foundation for the life I have made for myself. My mother is the product of a European Aristocratic background and first generation American when her family relocated to Portsmouth, Ohio during wartime. My father was born to Irish immigrants who came to this country in search of the American Dream of prosperity. They met in high school, fell madly in love, married and were supposed to live happily ever after. Portsmouth, Ohio was hard hit with poverty. Jobs were scarce. The stress of two young newly married 19 year olds with a baby drove my father to seek out any employment he could find. Sadly, it was out of the country in the military. The distance and stress tore my parents and their young family apart. My parents divorced when I was three years old. I never had the opportunity to know my father during my childhood. His absence left a whole in my heart that impacts me to this day.
My mother was so heart-broken about the dissolution of our young family, that we just "never spoke about it". In essence, my father became dead to me. Some might argue that how can you miss something if you never had it to begin with? She remarried a man who in the beginning seemed to be the answer to her prayers. It was only after we were isolated that she realized that he was an abusive alcoholic that would turn our lives from bad to worse in a nightmare that lasted until I was 16 years old.
I have learned over the years, that sometimes God delivers lessons to us in the form of conflicts so that we can grow and learn from these experiences. I grew up as a child laborer on a tobacco farm for fifty cents an hour starting at age 8. From these humble beginnings, I learned the value of a dollar and how hard work can drive you to success. I went on to become a young entrepreneur with various small businesses ranging from the typical babysitting to knitting sweaters on consignment to a scottish terrier breeder for pet stores throughout the state of Ohio.
Childhood was challenging. We moved 17 times forcing me to change schools repeatedly. Although it was difficult to always be "the new girl in school", it enabled me to learn the people skills in social environments to make new friends quickly and adapt to almost any social environment.
Because money was always an issue in our family, I contributed in any way I could from the various jobs and small businesses I had through my teenage years. Then at age 16, I created something that would change my life and lifestyle forever. Through my friends at school, neighbors and church groups, I developed a project of saving grocery packaging and using coupons that provided an annual income of about $20,000 a year of refund offers from various consumer products and a savings on our grocery bills of up to 80%.
In 1978, at the age of 18, I made my debut with the Bob Braun show on WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, Ohio and was dubbed America's Coupon Queen. Braun was so impressed that he offered me a position as a regular on the show. Within days another offer was made where I appeared nationally on the popular television series PM MAGAZINE. As an entrepreneur and the nation's youngest syndicated television journalist, my couponing and refunding system made me a branding expert with America's biggest corporate brands.
My career was cut short by a near fatal car crash that ended my career. Transforming myself, I served an apprenticeship with an Optometrist in,Ohio and survived with a backup plan as a Licensed Optician. I moved to California and married Extra TV and Fox News reporter Phil Shuman. After a chance meeting with Michael Jackson, I became the darling of the film and television industry by making house calls with designer eyewear to the most famous faces in the world.
Beginning in 1984, known as the Optician to the Stars, I was one of the pioneers in marketing the fashion industry to the entertainment industry. As an Optician having direct eye to eye contact, I realized the power of celebrity and how that power can make a designer or product a household name overnight. I was quickly single handedly credited with some of the biggest trendsetters in the history of sunglasses and eyewear. Terminator 2, When Harry Met Sally, Thelma and Louise, Bat Man, Mission Impossible and Erin Brockovich are just a few of the more than 3,000 feature film and television projects that I have been credited with during my 20 year history.
I have appeared on hundreds of television programs, newspapers and magazines, including, but not limited to: Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Extra, Mike and Maty (ABC), Today Show (NBC), HBO Entertainment News, and more. Through my personal relationships and connections with Hollywood Royalty and the media, I can now share all of the latest trends in celebrity inspired fashion trends, hotspots for travel, spas, dining, sports, comedy and everything else you can imagine all through the technology of streaming video on the internet and television syndication outlets.
My optical business expanded during the 1990's by adding product placement, public relations, marketing and media services to other brands and products in fashion, lifestyle, electronics and service oriented businesses and products. I found myself being contacted by hundreds of others wanting to learn my secrets of aligning their products and brands with the trendsetters, influencers and early adopters of the elite social circle I have created over the years.
My company still maintains the core business of optics, eyewear and sunglasses to this day, servicing not only society elite, but consumers around the world through virtual opticians on the internet on StarryEyes.org. The public relations division of my company places products and brands with celebrities and through my television background we create, write and product feature stories for the media, including print and video features that are distributed through traditional media outlets and the internet to create buzz that translates to sales for the companies involved.
With my experience as a small business owner and entrepreneur, I can now serve others with their entrepreneurial dreams of starting and building their own companies.
In November of 2006, I received a call from my mother telling me that after a 43 year absence, that she and my birth father had reunited. Not only had they gotten back in touch with each other, but they fell in love all over again and married just a few months later. Excited by the possibility of having my first ever family Christmas with my parents, I rushed to their side throwing my baggage in the back of my Porsche and drove cross country back to my hometown. Upon my arrival, my mother noticed my skintone and lack of energy and forced me to see a doctor. With the knowledge that my uncle had just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died just weeks after his diagnosis, the fear was that I too might have cancer.
The fear was quickly realized that in fact, the moment I was examined by the doctors I too, was diagnosed with Cancer. I was rushed to the hospital and immediately sent to the operating room. I was told that I would most likely not live to see my next birthday and that I should "get my affairs in order and say my goodbyes". I did that. I prepared for the end just like I did everything else, with dignity and a straight forward business approach. After planning my own cremation and memorial, my birthday came and went. I had started working with alternative health practioners that I believe has saved my life thus far.
One of these alternative medicines is the use of Medicinal Cannabis. Although I know this is a controversial issue, I have chosen to "come out of the closet" about a subject that I knew very little about until my diagnosis. I truly believe that Medicinal Cannabis has not only saved my life, but has provided me with a better quality of life today than I have ever had. I also believe that it has stopped the growth of the tumors that continue to live inside my body.
I went through the legal requirements to used Medicinal Cannabis in the state of California and have become so passionate about the issue that I formed my own Medical Cannabis collective in Beverly Hills to help others obtain the medicine they need safely, legally and with compassion and understanding.
Recently, Marie Claire Magazine wrote an article about “Stiletto Stoners” where they mention an “anonymous optician that had a secret about marijuana”. Fortune Magazine featured a cover article on “How Pot Became Legal” . You will be hearing more about my involvement in the Canna-business world and my activity in politics.
On September 25, 2009, I was honored and privileged to be asked to form and direct the Beverly Hills Chapter for NORML. I have accepted that challenge. My plan is to use my experience in working with media and celebrities into a more active role for the movement. This will include Celebrity Driven public service announcement campaigns and events in the Beverly Hills area. I would love to have you join us to take a more active role in legalizing marijuana and gaining more mainstream public support.
Today, I have been able to rebuild my life, my work, my health and my family life. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the gifts I have been given and dedicate my life to sharing the wisdom and life lessons I have learned with others.
