Generally speaking...
orders placed after 4PM (market close) receive the NEXT market day closing price.
There are plenty of exceptions, but usually they play against you. i.e: the deadline is earlier than 4PM.
So, an order placed today before 9.30AM usually receives the same price (today's closing price) as one placed later in the day. (as long as it is placed before the deadline)
Hope this helps.
It's 20% cash, and he even said he would like that figure to be a bit lower. (Probably between 15% and 10%)
He very rarely goes to 80% cash (not even when he is bearish) as he also keeps several long term positions.
Take care.
I have TurboTax Basic 2002 in front of me.
I didn't open the box yet, but in the comparative table in the back it shows that TT Basic "Imports 1098, 1099, and W-2 Data" , "Imports from Quicken, QuickBooks & MS Money", and "Transfers 2001 TurboTax or TaxCut data", among other things...
It's actually the day before to Jan 2nd.
The key to understanding dividends is the price you pay for the stock. If you pay "full price" (up to the day before it goes ex-dividend) then you've got the dividends.
If you pay the "new, adjusted, ex-dividend" price then you don't have the dividends.
What confuses people is an oscure and (almost) useless rule, that delays (a couple of days) the registration of dividends to your name if you buy the stock less than 3 days before then "ex" date. (Basically you cannot vote your dividends for a few days if you do that, but unless you are seeking control of the Board it shouldn't make a difference for you <g>)
Tuesday 24th (Tomorrow) is a half day. Market closes at 1:00PM EST
Wed. 25th Market is closed.
The rest of the year is normal schedule.

Final Comments.
- Even if I'm not using real money yet, I take the decisions to buy and sell in real time. (if I'm in front of the computer when the signal is given --otherwise I use a time and price biased to the "worst" case)
I've been running this program only for 6 days, so any conclusions are likely to be very premature, but I'll throw a couple anyway:
- I'm using 1% and 3% as triggers for going short, and long. The actual data values are usually far more extreme than that. I was tempted to change them to (let's say) -15% and +15% but it doesn't seem to affect the results much. (and the "one trade per day only" rule takes care of the whipsaws better, it seems)
- SPY seems to have less volatility than QQQ, but ADVN seems to be more sensitive than ADVNQ. ADVN has triggered changes earlier than ADVNQ in all cases. (so far, of course) It would be interesting to trade QQQ using ADVN as trigger.
I'll keep testing this system as it looks that there might be something to it.
If there's interest I'll keep on posting results as they become available.
This is the log and trades for the Oddball System applied to Nasdaq.

MM, thank you for the link!
I have been very busy, and I was not able to implement the Darvas method yet, but the Oddball system looked intriguing, and much easier to test.
As I didn't have historical data available (till now) I did a smal program to "forward test" it. (See more details below) When I have some free time I'll adapt it to test the historical data you provided.
This is what I did with the Oddbal System so far:
My program "forward tests". That means that it collects RT data and applies Oddball to it as it comes.
I run two independent tests, one for NYSE, and another for Nasdaq.
I use &ADVN and &ADVNQ (as numbers of advancing issues for NYSE and Nasdaq) and SPY and QQQ as the stocks that are bought and sold.
I keep data points each 15 minutes for archival purposes, but the percentage of change is calculated every minute or so against yesterday's value closest in time. (i.e. today's 10:12 &ADVN against yesterdays 10:12 &ADVN value)
I place trades as they present themselves, and not in restrospect. (Except for the first day) At first I followed the rule of not operating before 10AM but I broke it today as the % was way over 100%.
I added an arbitrary rule to avoid whipsaws: (and pattern day-trading) Only one trade per day. So far it has served well.
In the following EMails I'll post data and trades for the last 6 days. (All I have so far...)
When you stare too long into the PPT, the PPT stares back at you.

Windows ME is one of the worst Windows versions ever. (sorry... <ng>)
I understand your reservations about the XP copyright policies. I made the switch to XP with big reservations last year, and I didn't have any problems since. I guess Microsoft received so many complains that they have made dormant their "big brotherish" aspirations. (All the code is still there, of course, if they feel that they can get away with it)
Windows 2000 (as it was already pointed to you) is another good alternative. (Except that many games don't run)
Good luck.

Thinking Like a Criminal
(Idle thoughts while I watch RYVYX appreciate)
Of all the justifications I heard for this rally the one that holds more water is that the Wall Street establishment needs it in order to get good Christmas Bonuses. Can they pull it off? Sure. No problem. They own the circus, they can do whatever they want.
Yesterday they just stopped selling, (high raise in prices with very little volume) and today they added volume to the mix.
Now we have a huge short squeeze that fuels on itself. (All they have to do is to make sure that the prices don't backtrack too much)
What can we expect now?
Well, let's see, have they reached their objectives?
Not yet. The money fueling the rally is the old hands, and shorts covering. They still need the public at large to get in. (Up to a point, of course. Many were badly burned last year. --But people have short memories...)
Moses makes his investment decisions during the week-end. So Friday has to be a "non-negative" day to generate buying power for Monday.
Then perhaps a mild correction Tuesday or Wed., (not too deep, so shorts are still on hock) and then fireworks again going into the Thanksgiving weekend to bring even more reluctant capital into play.
Just some food for thought.

Pardon me for barging in...

so far, it's 65% accurate on up and down... not good..
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I read in several places that 60%-66% is the maximum theoretical accuracy that you can get in systems like the ones we are talking about. I never followed the mathematics, but people I respect assure me so.
So 65% is quite good. I would try to combine it with some money management criteria, and give it a spin...
(My own system --which I'm not willing to discuss at this point -- started with 75% accuracy, and I was elated, 6 months later it reverted to about 66%, and I can still make good money out of it)

My thoughts exactly...
Opening over 1426 and running it up from there is the movement that will scr*w the largest number of people. (With a huge short squeeze to follow)
Tomorrow is going to be interesting...
I'm quite interested in the subject matter of this thread, regretfully it doesn't seem to have reached "critical mass"
I'm collecting information on Darvas boxes to later evaluate whether I can add them to my methods.
I was not able to get Darvas' book (yet) and the (free) information around the internet is rather sketchy.
These are the best links I found so far:

I went to a second computer, and I found out that it works OK if I don't log-in. If I log-in I still get no charts.
Regretfully the feature I'm looking for (60 minute historical quotes) is only available if I log-in.
I'll contact the Lycos people, and run the gauntlet <g>
Thank all for your answers.
Train Guy, (or anyone)
I understand you use Lycos LiveCharts.
Is it working for you?
I have been unable to see the charts (any stock) for the last 2 days, and I wanted to know whether it was liveChart's problem, or my computer's.

Be careful what you ask for. This bear may still have sharp teeth behind those lips...
In ETrade you can switch everyday, low commision, (may be waivered) and cut-off time of 4PM.
I investigated several brokerages and this was the best. (For Rydex funds)
Many of them makes you stay 2 days minimum, and charge commisions. (some of them quite high)
Hope this helps
I don't know anything about the new law, but you can try giving a foreign address, (from a family member, or a friend) and have an american "mailing address" and/or have all statements sent only to an electronic address.
Good luck.
Not that I know.
I compile it myself during the day as part of my trading system.
Feel free to ask me when you need it.
(now 56 Mil. against 45 Mil. yesterday -> +24%)
FWIW,
Accumulated QQQ volume is aprox. +23% over same time yesterday, and that figure has been more or less constant since 10AM.
If this ratio holds QQQ volume at the end of the day will be 110 Mil. which is the highest of the last 7 days.
Ah, OK.
I seldom watch TV, so I thought it was "new news" when I caught a passing glance at it.

Zeev,
everybody is wondering about today's rally, but I didn't see the following news commented anywhere:

This sounds as an "economy reactivation package" to me:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
"a $355.5 billion package giving the wartime Pentagon (news - web sites) "every resource, every weapon and every tool they need." and "4.1 percent salary increase for military personnel"
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
This buys a lot of integrated circuits, and the 4% increase in salaries translates immediately into more liquidity for the economy at large.

Bush Signs Defense Spending Bill
1 hour, 43 minutes ago
By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer
President Bush (news - web sites) signed into law Wednesday the biggest military spending increase since Ronald Reagan (news - web sites)'s administration — a $355.5 billion package giving the wartime Pentagon (news - web sites) "every resource, every weapon and every tool they need."
Overwhelmingly approved by Congress, the measure contains a 4.1 percent salary increase for military personnel, $7.4 billion to keep developing a ballistic missile defense system and $72 billion for new weapons.
With the president contemplating war against Iraq, and U.S. troops involved in an anti-terror campaign across the globe, the law increases Pentagon spending in almost every area for the budget year that began Oct. 1 by a total of more than $34 billion, or 11 percent, over the previous year. It was the biggest increase in 20 years.

She is truly an evil entity that

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Agreed that AJC is a leech, but don't forget who pays her salary. (Hint: it's NOT the public at large)
Regretfully she does her job well. A big part of the blame should be placed on the media that portraits her as giving uninterested advice, while she is instead just a piece of the "fleecing machine".
(after I posted this I read a message from ChrisJP stating more or less the same. No plagiarism here, only parallel thinking, he, he...)
I reduced my RYVYX exposure to 50%.
My system signals "down" for tomorrow, but by looking at the chart I can expect a far larger movement to the upside than to the downside, so I remain bullish, but with only 50% of the money in.
While I do not agree with your personal take of Donald Sew, I'd say that his work stands on its own by relevance and originality, and by those merits alone it more than deserves a place here.
OK,
Some suggestions:
While I'm a big fan of diversifying, you just cannot do it with $2K! Commisions will eat you alive. (even if you are planning to hold for several years)
Your best bet with that money is to pick ONE stock (not even two) that will probably have a strong move and stick with it.
In choosing this stock I would disregard all previous "prima donnas" History shows that very rarely they lead the pack in the next investment cycle. (And the 2000 bubble bust closed the 1990-1999 investment cycle) A new cycle is coming, but the leaders will mostly be new blood.
What to do then? It's tought. I would look at Zeev's long term picks. (There's a list around there somewhere, maybe Agieboo can help finding it...) In choosing these stocks Zeev takes into account both Technical, and Fundamental issues, and looks for (fairly) unknown undervalued sound companies.
That's probably what you should be looking for for your ONE pick.
(Note: Do not confuse the "Q" with this "long term" list, they are quite different stocks)
Hope this helps.
I not only covered last week, but went long.
(AMZN is showing too much strength compared to the market)
Just closed AMZN short @16.85 (it hit my stop) for a +4.5% in 3 days.
Federal Reserves, your posts are a great contribution to the thread. Please keep them coming!
FWIW:
I think that the Fed injected extra liquidity coming into 9/11 (to buffer the system against any "unexpected" event) and now is just in the process of draining it back.
The way the market is reacting to both the ramp-up, and the drain tells about its internal health.
Sorry to barge in, but I think ETrade is the way to go: (but you can only trade Rydex funds: RYVNX, RYVYX, etc)
Cutoff time: 4:00PM
No fees.
You can flip within the fund family the next day, and you have to wait one day if you want to go to cash.
I'm no sure about the minimum starting capital. $15K?
Hope this helps.
James B, just a quick THANK YOU! for that post:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Short AMZN at $17.57. No way it stays up here for options expiration.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
We had just bounced off 1247, Zeev was back in his bear suit, I had just closed my QCOM long <see note below>, and was looking in the stocks of the Q for a short...
Then I read your post and I said "That's it!"
A quick look at the charts, and I shorted AMZN at 17.73, and more later at 17.56.
The idea is to hold until Naz 1250 or so, (with stops, of course) but it sure doesn't hurt to be +5% off the gates!
Thanx again.
* <NOTE> The Blind Squirrel Corner.
I bought QCOM on 8/28/02 @27.71 based on these posts from Zeev: #msg-479122 and #msg-479239 Zeev later disclosed his target for QCOM in #msg-480067
I was waiting for "just under 32" but when the Naz bounced off 1347 today I knew it was time to close the position: (sold@30.62) a nice +10.5% in exactly 2 weeks.
This post is not to gloat (OK, I'm gloating a little bit...) but to show that is possible to swing trade using Zeev's medium term picks, and his upside/downside targets for the Naz.
Before QCOM I did the same thing successfully with AAPL, ( #msg-466886 ) and now trying with AMZN (not a Zeev pick, Zeev doesn't short) to the downside.
Hi, Joe.
First of all I want to say that I don't know the future.
But I wouldn't dismiss the chart so readily.
What it really shows is how highs in the Dow correspond to the "peaking" of ground-breaking technologies:
1834: ?
1906: Railroad
1929: Automobile
1966: <Big> Computers? (and maybe the 1987 mini-peak was <personal> computers)
2000: Internet (or maybe Cell phones)
Another thing that is way clear from this chart is that Every Time that we went through the excesses and turmoil proper of a new technology we followed with a <long> period of "<in>digestion".
I believe that what is totally unreasonable is to think that "this time is different" and take the slope of the trend between 1982 and now as the one to project into the future.
Surely the economy has changed, but one of those changes is that now almost everybody has stocks in their IRA's, 401K's, etc. The most efficient way to screw the largest number of people is to have the Dow reaching 3000 by, let's say, 2015.
Of course I respect your right to extrapolate "your way" but we didn't have major catastrophic events from 1906 to 1920, (oops: WW1) from 1929 to 1948, (oops: WW2) from 1966 to 1982, (oops: Vietnam) so I say we don't need any special event to slide back to the norm. (Except, perhaps, a Middle East War?)
