Closed out my ISRG short flat, but looking to short it again higher.
Followed you into FCX
Hard to see the negatives of what would be a growth story, Cy. I have been told the Walmart in the area has the highest theft rate of all the US Walmarts. I think that includes employee theft as well, so maybe with their 5-fingered discount their take-home pay is closer to that which would be earned working on a rig. ;)
Thanks again for the information. I have placed these two posts as "keep" so I can remember what you have told me.
"SOTU"? I'm having a dense moment - what is it?
Cy, thank you so very much for your informative post. You brought up some issues that I wasn't considering just yet, due to my focus on the water issues. Speaking of water, I was also wondering if a lot of water is used in the process. Groundwater is probably the big concern, especially since there are resevoirs for NYC up there. As far as the nuisance of a near-by operation, it sounds as it would be comparable to having Indian gaming and the social costs included, except for a adjacent neighbor. I imagine an operating rig? would be 24/7 until it is depleted, with a depletion rate on a case by case basis. The area is pretty rural, so I would hope that a location can be selected to impact few, if any, people directly. Maybe I am naive.
I highly doubt that there will be drilling adjacent to my family's location. The area could use the jobs and some influx of $. Its been on a decline since the 60's.
Cy, when you have a chance, can you speak to the question of water quality issues and fracking (or point me to a few resources). I'm orginally from upstate NY in/near the area that the Marcellus Shale runs though. Family still lives there. I thought I should know a bit more about it beyond as an interested investor. Thanks!
OK, I see. I thought I was missing something else - like a bidding war emerging or something. I was bummed out when XTO was purchased. I'm looking for a replacement other than CHK. APA seemed kind of expensive, so I need to remember to watch for a discount.
Why XTO? Isn't that like hitching your wagon to XOM?
ISRG might have easy comparisons for next quarter. Something to keep on my radar for the next earnings play.
It looks like GS is keeping you young today!
Glad I didn't short PNRA. What a monster.
Thanks for the report, Joe. ISRG typically gets ahead of itself. I have a small short on that I might add to.
We must be getting old on this board. Looks like no one played ISRG earnings. True to form, this one really shot off like a rocket. Maokin (?) must be smiling today. I believe he was long the stock.
Re IOC, on a previous sell-off I sold some puts. I figured I didn't mind buying at the level less what I "earned" on the put sale. With today's run-up it looks golden and I should probably buy the puts back. I'll have to see what they cost....
In edit, I thought they would have been cheaper. I hope I'm not being too piggy.

I loved your play so much that I shorted the Feb 80 puts on IOC! When Joe first mentioned a short I thought, not for me since I was kind of bullish on the sector, but it was too expensive for me to buy. Now I get to participate.
Thanks you two for bringing this to the board.
Next to DO, it is my largest holding....what does that tell you?
That I asked the right guy!
Pantera, any thoughts on CELG here? You used to really like this one. I've owned it a long time. So long I forgot why. LOL
Wow, must be lots of little blue boxes out there. Something about that TIF blue. I only got one in my lifetime, about 20 years ago and I still have the gift.
WSM as a high end retailer might be stronger than expected. From what I gather the high and low end retailers did fine, the middle of the road stuff not so. That said, I think in the next decent pullback they all go down so you should be fine. I just think there are better ponies to ride.
By the way, just sent back to WSM the worst designed coffee pot on the planet. I guess it was heavily discounted for a reason, but I couldn't get past the melting plastic smell and steam on my hand at every pour. And I thought Krups made good stuff. Oh well.
Nice to know I'm not alone.
I must close my Etrade account or transfer most of my funds out of there. I am tired of their terrible service and I think the only thing that has kept me there are the good borrows on stocks to short versus Schwab.
Let some POT go this am and immediately had seller's remorse as it continued to run. Now I'm feeling better, plus I still have some.
I wish I liked selling more.
You might encounter borrowing difficulty in shorting the ETFs.
I was thinking GRMN would be a good short candidate but I need to check into it a bit more. I'm thinking I want to short it because my brother is still whistling their Christmas commercial from last year (give-a, give-a, give-a Garmin)
I'm one counting my blessings on MOS, but I believed the bad news was already reflected. The expectation is still the same for better potash pricing and sales for 2010. I actually own more POT but I move in and out of it with a small core.
The ag names have been fairly strong despite the dollar strength in Dec. MOS and POT are longer-term plays for me. I feel the weak quarter is already priced in, but with today's move up, I'm not so certain anymore. Running out of time here to decide.
MOS earnings tomorrow. I have a small long position and I'm scared.
I don't go to SI anymore, but that sounds like a nice feature.
Is there a Reader's Digest version of all the posts I've missed in the past several weeks? Only kidding. I'll go back and read and try to get a handle on things.
I hope everyone had a great holiday and wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Green like the hills in Ireland. Do they still make Reingold? If not I'll have a Youngs Double Chocolate Stout.
CMTL - nice find! Congrats!
So true Jim. You played the plan well.
Any ideas for now? Waiting for your low first?
I guess instead of saying you have done well with that fund, I should have said you knocked the ball out of the park!
Whatever you do, diversify your holdings. So if you decide to do the dividend paying stock route, then pick several. There are good choices paying 3 -4%, but that would give you $1,000 a month tops. Could you live with that, especially when the underlying is subject to the market?
Same thing with bonds or mutual funds - Pick several. I, for one am not that fond of bonds at this juncture. However, JimQ has been doing well/or has done well with a Pimco bond fund that is traded on the exchange.
Keep in mind - highest monthly income typically equates to the higher risk selections. It doesn't sound as though this is money you can afford to lose.
Isn't the proposed tax on stock transactions only (at this point)?
Wow, thanks for sharing that!
Joe, funny you should bring up HD and their slow pay ways. I happen to think about this on Friday. I was on the road and Clark Howard was on the radio. (Clark Howard is a personal finance and consumer advocate.) Anyway, he had a caller on who was one of AMZN's marketplace sellers (their competition to EBAY). She was describing a system of slow pay to the sellers by AMZN and how the sellers are kind of trapped into the system since they built their business there. The slow pay goes on for months. Seems short-sighted to me.
Yeah Joe, I was going to try to figure out the HD puzzle, but when I saw how complicated it was I had to drop it. Only so much time in a day. But you showed your impressive sleuthing ways back in that pursuit. How wonderful your hard work paid off in so many ways! Now I wish I tried a bit harder!
Actually, I think you should be the one to move on. I don't want my friends here to be sucked into a scam. That's how I see it.
