Peace out.
I remember a line from the movie Cold Mountain when they are going to get a dead bull out of a stream that was going to ruin the drinking water for the people downstream. "Let's do this in chapters" so that is what I shall do in the coming week or so.
First the Llama Llama chapter which is changing by the day

Winter Reading Challenge 2020 - Llama Llama Tour
They paid a year and a half of interest payments a year and a half in advance, then bought $80 mil in debt for $50 mil when no one expected them too, still people say they need to do more and the stock and company that does billions (with a B) in business should trade for pennies on the dollar, sure no problem, SMH and they think they are brilliant while doing it.
Stupid people will step over a dollar to pick up a penny every time because it's shiny.
Peace out.
Some heavy hitters on board here, they are the ones that bought the shares this is getting more interesting by the day. These are serious power players involved with this thing.

Rainbow Rangers and Llama Llama are now in thier second season and have since August started to heavily license commercial products especially for Rainbow Rangers.
Michaels, Dollar General, Spirit, Target, Walmart, Kohls, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Buy Buy Baby, Wegmans
Books, DVD's, Downloads, Dolls, Puzzles, Plush Toys, Apparel, Bike, School Supplies, Vitamins, Decopac’s cake design and decorating kits available at grocery and bakery stores, party accessories from Prime Party and Creative Converting available at online retailers, stationery items from Inkology, In September, the Company will unveil Halloween costumes from Disguise at Walmart, Party City and online retailers; and a Halloween retail program with Rainbow Rangers’ costumes will be available in approximately 1,200 Spirit stores.
I have read every single shareholder letter (cannot say you weren't kept informed, but all the way back 3-4 years ago it was said take 3-4 years for the money to start rolling through licensing, that is how the business works starting from idea the heavy merchandising. Now it is starting and although I agree many are frustrated but now it is starting to roll exactly how the CEO said it would and people are trying to run it down, the end of the rainbow is in sight kids been a long wait but now its time. Its like a biotech watch them till the time/trials/approvals are in thats when the income starts. Its all about building that revenue stream (river) have it coming from everywhere you turn.
This is from the PR in September of 2018 explaining us how it would be rolled out and it has started to just as they said, they even have bikes.
"Genius Brands International Signs Deals With KIDdesigns and Basic Fun!, Expanding Rainbow Rangers Product Lines for the 2019 U.S. Retail Launch"
"KIDdesigns and Basic fun join approximately 20 blue-chip industry-leading licensing partners for the retail launch, including Mattel Inc. (master toy), MacMillan Publishing (master publishing), Bentex (master apparel), A.M.E. (sleepwear), Berkshire Fashions for cold weather accessories, BioWorld (bags, backpacks), Ceaco (puzzles), Disguise (Halloween costumes), Handcraft Manufacturing (packaged underwear), H.E.R. Accessories (jewelry and hair accessories), Jay Franco (bedding and bath), Dynacraft (bicycles), Kid Galaxy (bubble toys), Kiddieland (foot-to-floor ride-ons), and Planet Sox (hosiery) as well as Spirit Halloween for a direct-to-retail program. The retail program for Rainbow Rangers will begin rolling out in Back-to-School (July/August) 2019 with over 300 product SKU’s coming to the marketplace."
Like I said all these things take time and the man has said from the jump how long it will take and it has come to fruition its all starting and this year (Superhero Kindegarten with Stan Lee and A. Swarzeneggar names in it and Ali Baba already signing on to partner for China/Asia and are throwing 7 figures out there for the privelage. Now is the right time at the right price to take a piece on a dip its all up from here.
Just this year along the first 9 months see how much licesning is up from previous year By this time enext year that number will have another zero in it especially after The Lee/Swarzeneggar deal that will license imediately here and Asia/EU etc.
Licensing & Royalties
Nine Months Ended
September 30, 2018 $302,140
September 30, 2019 $674,107
in 2018 they only did $450K total in licensing the entire year and $472K in 2017 watch how high these numbers are this Q and the full year for 2019 and what they will be as the skus grow. That is the key with this watching licensing #'s rise and how quickly they rise it will be fast and furious.
https://toybook.com/genius-brands-rainbow-rangers-and-llama-llama-hit-retail-with-new-product-lines/
The just had a DVD released RAINBOW RANGERS: WELCOME TO KALEIDOSCOPIA (DVD) NEW (2019) Format: NTSC Number of discs: 1 Studio: Genius Brands DVD Release Date: December 3, 2019. That hit right in time for Xmas.
Another Llama Llama DVD was hit for Xmas after releasing two others in October. Its building more and more as it pushes into 2020 it will continue to grow at a more rapid pace the more sku's the more coming in day after day. The company has 200-300 more skus in the works for Rainbow Rangers in 2020 and Kindergarten Superhero will have that many from the jump worldwide as licensing will run concurrent with the release of the series and it is an entirely different already known entity.
"A DVD, Merry Christmas Llama Llama will debut at mass retail and online for holiday season 2019." This just after releasing a new book that hit NYT's best seller list September 15th. Now that this train is rolling is when things start happening getting the masses now just execute and give the people what they want Llama Llama has 25+ new skus in three months and it will contue to grow, past is the past now its time.
They had a series delivered and paid Q3 the second series of Lama Llama and a lot more licensing items rolled out with that brand as well although not the way it is starting to roll with Rainbow Rangers rolling out steady.
They are rated the #2 girls show on Nick Jr. for its age group here are the numbers from October and some of the licesned items up to that point.
http://www.geodesicmanagement.com/theatrical/rainbow-rangers-live/
Just relax, the CEO himself last year put $3.25 million in so to advance all these deals etc. Now with literally the icing on the cake this coming year of the Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten series set with Arnold Schwarzenegger and it will be distributed in China and Asia with partnership with Alibaba a final number hasn't been nailed down but is in the 7 figures.
Delivery date in US is 2020 a pilot of it was shown in Cannes This past October and it was a top pick, not sure if the delivery to the Chinese market can also be 2020 but with this much of a start with the new partnership signed I don't see why not.
2nd one down.shows delivery date 2020.

Items are already being developed for licensing in one video of the most recent shareholder letter October 15th Arnold is holding one of the lunch boxes. This is all happening as expected and the timing is perfect with bottom of the chart for the stock when the greatest rewards can be reaped.

This suffered from people waiting, shorts, and the all expected selling of shares (mainly to the CEO) to finish getting everything clicking but the float becuase of the CEO going deep certainly isn't expanding as those shares won't see the lght of day for a long time to come. This isn't the first time at the rodeo for this lot they are already succeses with CEO having already sold one company to the big boys in Hollywood. Take a very good look look into all the players and their histories this is winner winner chicken dinner, its been a wait but will have been well worth it, IMHO.
This was the first holiday season with a significant amount of licensed products out there and growing for both Rainbow Rangers and Llama Llama I think people will be surprised and many don't get this business when building from scratch takes a few years, well, now we have arrived to the honey pot.
Grab a piece on a dip, thank me later.

This is gonna be one of those ones everyone was like when did that making/increasing revenues YoY Q after Q happen? It was just time 2020 Superhero Kindegarten gonna change things up quick, first they will have retail merch to coincide with air date the partnership to take it to Asia with BABA merchandising a known entity Stan Lee, The Arnold that is already licensing gold could be platinum but most certainly gold.
The last Stan Lee/Arnold Schwarzenegger end of story Hollywood/animation gold.
Stan Lee’s Final Project Is an Animated Superhero Show for Kids Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger
https://www.indiewire.com/2019/05/stan-lee-final-project-arnold-schwarzenegger-animated-series-1202145400/
This is a very big thing in many quarters of the industry, very big.
Ask yourself a question, why did the CEO buy $500K of the debt this year, why did the CEO buy so much of the stock privately placed this year (almost all of it)? Why not just pump the obvious and dilute to the market as almost every other company does/would/has? I shouldn't have to answer that question.
Now this has zero to do with Stan Lees Kindergarten Superhero lets just preface it with that.
But, with this trend that has spread across both the US and Canada this past year how fast do you think that the cartoon series will become a must watch and probably incorporated into teachers classrooms. 2 + 2 = 4 everytime. This is just a a few from December.

I am going to surmize that Stan Lee and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Kindergarten Superhero will go over rather well and I would bet dollars to donuts that the fine people in licensing circles and the company have an inkling too.
Peace out.
Okay kid. Whatever. You have a good day.
You don't know me, you only think you know me.
Peace out.
Well, watch and see. You aren't the first and you shall not be the last.
It is all about the market cap and revenues increasing 50%+ Q over Q for the next 2 years (2020-2021), watch.
Peace out.
It is getting close to another shareholder letter, that is one thing that people have to admit with GNUS as frustrating (like a biotech) as it has been for many holders, one cannot say the CEO has not communicated and kept people aware and been totally up front from the jump.
I am ready for the vitamins to hit next the pre-launch page is up got added recently I check everyday, but, would imagine when that goes live will get PR from company and Integrity Vitamins that is the next real biggie that is a steady revenue stream from licensing, kids take them everyday and that s just another that will just keep clocking every week/month/quarter more products licensed more checks rolling in.
https://shopintegrityvitamins.com/pages/rainbow-rangers%E2%84%A2
And then the dolls, evidently it was open secret dolls were coming as a lady mentioned she would be happy when they were out and wanted to know when, the reply they got was when we are able to tell you we will, soon. That was on facebook page.
Fisher Price has something coming its on Amazon already but no date just the pages where they will be, it says out of stock, well it's never been in stock yet. Anna Banana is one of the girls evidently its all gonna keep flowing, timing all about timing.
Fisher-Price Rainbow Rangers Ranger Ready Anna Banana
https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Rainbow-Rangers-Ranger-Banana/dp/B07MCFBJZC
Here is a link where Kraft Foods is contemplating a kids tv dinner with rainbow rangers, I would imagine there are umpteen things being worked on by different companies, they develop it they bring to GNUS say here is what we have GNUS okays it gets a check and then gets another revenue stream. That's where I think people/companies are working overtime on products for Kindergarten Superhero. That lunchbox Swarzeneggar had in that interview in November that was just one of dozens already in the book IMHO.
https://tvdinners.fandom.com/wiki/Rainbow_Rangers_Chicken_Nuggets
IMHO we end the year with $10+ mil revenue this year 50-60 the year after when kindergarten Superhero is really rocking 1/4 of a billion in 2021
and that's all just income just because you have the
copyrights/trademarks in hand. Just my own guesses we will just have to see.
When they got BABA to sign on then I knew it was on like Donkey Kong, I already knew it could be, but, BABA signing on to take it to Asia, winner winner chicken dinner, IMHO.
Its not how much you make from one licensing deal its how much from 300-500 products in merchandising deals from dozens and dozens of countries. And like I said Kindergarten Superhero Stan Lee/Arnold Schwarzenegger
with international release with BABA goes into an entirely different category, that's the key have licensed items selling 24/7 around the globe.
I have read some people not familiar with how this business works, saying things like "Andy just keeps wanting to have everything a library of cartoons etc, why not focus on one or two big ones" well you do, but you want that big library of trademarks/copyrights revenue streams rolling in just filling up the sack.
Peace out.
BTW the release date I refer to has been quoted in many Hollywood articles and industry sites, on Arnold Swarzenneggars IMBD site says its going on as we speak the voice overs.
Catch a piece on a dip IMHO and put it in a coffee can, shoe box, cookie jar or underneath the bed and forget about it, it will grow, 2020 IMHO this thing gets real.
It is the way it is with DVD's so much is sold online when it comes in that realm (books/DVD's etc.) Having it out in multiple countries/languages so quickly shows just how fast a track it is on now (merchandising).
It is has been frustrating for people I get it, imagine many of the initial holders that bought in big, original funding) they all still have their shares, but, they know the game. Kindergarten Superhero is a horse of a different color Stan Lee, Swarzenagger its a "we want to license this/that etc" knocks at the door from the jump. Obviously, but, with things like RR and LLama LLama takes time, they signed the merchandising deals with like Mattel before the cartoon ever even hit the screens, everybody wanted to have their slot and be ready, well now it flows like water.
Kindergarten Superhero is going to be in another time zone Stan Lee/Comic Con Arnold Swarzeneggar this time, this price, IMHO it is at its most investable with the greatest opportunities going forward IMHO.
I would not be surprised if there were already 100+ merchandisable items already set, being worked on etc, right now. That's just how the Hollywood Entertainment game is played its release is 2020 you can bet people are already eating/sleeping/drinking that cartoon from many different quarters. We shall see.
Its on now, its really on.
Peace out.
Peace out.
The newest one just came out for holiday season the "Welcome to Kaleidoscope" it was 12/3/2019 since September there has been a rollout of new licensed merchandise that is to continue through 2020+
I am going to post a full DD page on all that has and is going on with licensing for Llama Llama, Rainbow Rangers and the Stan Lee Superhero Kindergarten with Arnold Schwarzenegger. CEO said from 3-4 years ago would take 3-4 years for it to really start pumping as it just takes that long to get a hit cartoon (now they have two, soon the biggest will be three) and get the merchandising rolling out in earnest.
I think/thought all along about GNUS as like a bio tech, frustrating to say the east but then, when it happens and the wheel starts spinning it just goes faster and faster.
Good thing about the new one in production now with Alibaba partnering to produce a Chinese version (Chinese dubbing) to be released along with the English version. I am sure with all the hits Arnold Schwarzenegger has had in film there is a "go to" guy that has a pretty good impersonation in Chinese of his voice.
One of the many other other good things about the new cartoon besides it being Stan Lee/Arnold Schwarzenegger and all the press/attention that garners is the merchandise will run concurrent with the release. Llama Llama and Rainbow Rangers they needed to wait for them to be hits before any licensing could be done so there was a 1-2 year gap there, where as with the big names in Kindergarten Superhero people immediately start knocking on the door to license goods.
Rainbow Rangers and Lama Lama had to first be hit in the US then in North America (check) then South America (check) then Europe (check) then Asia (check) then companies want to license products it is as the CEO said 3-4 years ago a timely expensive process. But, then let the good times roll.
Just did a quick search to see when that latest DVD came out (another came out for Llama Llama just before Xmas too, but anyway I found this a Portuguese version for South America https://mundoftp.com/rainbow-rangers-2019-iso-capa-dvd/ (Brazil/Portugal) you would be surprised just how fast that merchandising is now spreading worldwide for Llama Llama and Rainbow Rangers since September, watch what happens. When worldwide checks start rolling in from 100+ countries, then, then its on.
Things are going that fast now out in the US the licensers they wat to sell they get it out quick, where as GNUS just takes the fees and royalties now, just like biotechs, now the drugs are on the market and doing well and the best drug the cancer drug (Kindergarten Superhero) is set for release in 2020 and that wheel starts spinning immediately.
Timing/price its always about that and with this one the timing could not be better, its all about the market cap, money gonna flow like a river and its priced like its a stand at Comic Con selling t-shirts.
I will put a full DD post Monday with everything going back 3 years to show the timeline, everything has gone as the CEO said.
People aren't getting it, the spigot got turned on in mid/late September in a big way and it is only going to get better every week/month https://finance.yahoo.com/news/walmart-leads-halloween-retail-program-130000520.html
Peace out.
This one it is all coming together, timing is key and that has arrived IMHO.
Catch some on a dip, thank me later.
Peace out.
Blew me away it dipped to what it did, but, never mind it is what it is, you cannot stop short sellers they stay right at about 30-35%. Nothing but solid from here forward, things haven't looked this good at FRAN in 3 years yet it is being shorted down to half what it was a year ago? Crazy.
The market is just to easy to make money if one is willing to be just a tad bit patient.
Peace out.
I see a 3+ by ER release. Peace out.
You too.
Now I will ask you nicely, one more time don't respond to me act as if I am not even here.
You haven't a clue.
You have a nice day.
Peace out.
Apples and oranges they do limit themselves there in NA and Asia cannot imagine there are more than 250-300 million children in their demographic.
Lets just agree to disagree.
Ass cash or grass no one rides for free anymore, hears a thought read and comprehend.
Everything isn't like it has always been many things have happened but it is glossed over by tunnel vision.
Been shorted to death the past couple months last report date was Nov 29th short interest was up 313.89% from the 2 weeks prior. New numbers out this coming week, I would imagine numbers are up again 100%+
Peace out.
Apples and oranges. You have a good one.
Peace out.
I watch them til everything is set the capitulation takes place and people take their eye off the ball. This new series in 2020 is stepping into a whole new arena IMHO.
I like the all hope is lost theme, that's my favorite time for me to take a position on something I been watching.
The CEO just bought 1 million shares for.76 right before the Nov 15th CC putting your money where your mouth is with me. He can do that I can do .20's
From the Nov 15th press release, no expensive CC needed...…..
Andy Heyward, Chairman & CEO of Genius Brands, commented, “This has been an extremely productive quarter and we are now seeing the first results of our strategy to create valuable children’s content, beginning to pay off. We recently announced a transformational partnership between Genius Brands and the Alibaba Company of China. Alibaba, China’s largest company, will co-produce Stan Lee's Superhero Kindergarten with us, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as distribute, promote, and oversee licensing of consumer products and merchandising in China. China represents an enormous potential market for this series, four times that of the U.S. with over 1.4 billion consumers. We believe the brand appeal of a Stan Lee production, combined with the star power of Arnold Schwarzenegger, will make the series and associated products, a major success not only in China, where they are hugely popular iconic figures, but equally around the world. In the U.S., we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from potential industry partners, manufacturers, as well as consumers.
"""We look forward to providing further updates on our plans to roll out the series, as well as announce a master toy partner, and tentpole licensees in the weeks ahead.”"""
Like I said catalyst on deck.
Peace out.
It is what it is, that's how companies grow and get things done.
This project last year has been expensive but the rewards reaped from it will be extensive. The CEO bought a million shares just recently, that's all he has ever done.
They are finally making decent revenues up 500% YoY and with the new comic cartoon and its partnership with BABA for China with it being near done this is like biotech just gather up the bottom til no sellers are left.
This thing IMHO will go from 0 to 60 like nothing.
Peace out.
Glad its done, now that can be shoved to the side and forgotten. $3.20 EPS after guidance for the Q was 0.00 to -1.00 for the Q. This guidance they set the bar low again no doubt to beat it yet again, no DB's in 12 days wiping $2 million in losses per week right from the books.
Loading when shorting is heavy from here out all gutter trips I shall be right in the middle of it.
Peace out.
Because they play these things, 90%+ of people online are short termers, not investors, they are looking for the 10--15-25% move or stop loss at 3-5% they spend their year winning/giving back/winning/giving back me I just buy when no one else wants it and count up my 1000% wine every year and its all so easy, just buy put it in a sock drawer and look at it quarterly like investors do.
Day to day is for people chasing that paycheck not investors.
Sold about 3% of my MR today and 2% yesterday and loaded some others including 140K ADMP as long as revs keep rocking costs keep dropping I could care less about anything with the FDA.
Short term thinkers just never get it, fundamentals. He who has the most toys wins and I am by far the leader of that pack.
Peace out.
Yep, I literally do count the days for Dressbarn, that is gonna ab a 180 degree changer, and I still have to pinch myself at times that about the liquidation happening during the holiday season, sell right up to Xmas no extra advertisement needed to clear out then like clockwork, the after Xmas sales that everyone already knows about just to mop up the dregs, you been in retail you know what I mean.
Peace out.
Believe it or not I welcome the RS if it comes through, takes a lot of smaller flippers/shorters out of it. But, a few things having me think they may not do it, not that it matters. The EPS gets multiplied just as much as the share price in a RS and RS's for big name companies aren't bad like they are for share printing factories that RS just to raise money.
Hell even one of my long time OTC stocks rose after RS, if you are making money and are set to make more the share price will follow suit. The only thing that changes is the OS/Float nothing else 15 more days no more Dress Barns we lose $2 million in weekly losses, pooooof.
And all that cash from liquidating the inventory, I would not mind if they bought more debt if they can get it at a discount in the 40% range again, that would be great. The large debt payment isn't due for 2 1/2 years if they keep buying it at a discount each Q they have the cash, which losing Dressbarn will give them plenty of that, they could have the debt virtually wiped off the books in 10-12 Q's just have to see.
Buying that $80 million of debt for $50 mil was worth what ? About .40c/share in enterprise value most people don't even get that, this stock should have shot north of a dollar just on that IMO regardless of the Dressbarn closures, which is huge $$ wise going forward and that they are in the best Q of the year.
Holiday sales are holiday sales as are holiday sales, they don't call it Black Friday for nothing that's when most retailers make the bulk of their $$ for the year.
I am as happy as a man could be with that last Q surprise of .18 a share and the buying back debt was just over the moon.
I have heard various things from a few different people, buying shares/selling Justice, either of which I would be very pleased with as I would a RS like I said it is nothing but a multiplying of the share price and when you are making positive EPS that just multiplies that as well.
Peace out.
Only a rumor I have heard a few places this morning different chat rooms/people I respect, but, time for playing this puppy may be coming to an end. Something other than RS may be in the works for $1+
And RS is always PRed immediately after the vote
We shall see.
Peace out.
I love how they write these headlines so they can remain as negative as possible even when they can't because the realities won't let them.
"Ascena crushes profit estimates but sales still sag "
https://www.retaildive.com/news/ascena-crushes-profit-estimates-but-sales-still-sag/568795/
Sag? Right so with 3,363 stores for Q1 2020instead of the 3,635 stores they had in Q1 2019 so with 10% less stores to generate revenue they were only down 3% in sales not 10% while making .18 per share net income increased 437% and that is somehow that is a negative?
Closing money losing stores and starting to make 437% more money is somehow a bad thing, okay, sure go with that. I guess when they close another 544 losing Dress Barns in a few weeks all those profits added to the balance sheet will just be a bad thing too? LOL, glad none of these Einsteins never ran any of my businesses in the past.
300 losing stored dropped profits jumped 437%
wonder what they will go to in a few weeks when 544 more losing are closed? .40 EPS per Q maybe?
Peace out
It shows the extra $10 mil drawn on the revolving credit and yes a loss on the balance sheet +/- for the Q.
The EPS is never "just" about how much is taken in how much is sold, would never have those ridiculous losses that come out in companies Q's etc. like last year when FRAN was "losing" 20+ mil a Q they weren't but showed that.
How about "write downs" those too show EPS +/- but really have zero to do with it. I would love if EPS was just about EPS.
But, over they years accountants have muddied up to the point it stays muddy and things they "made up" before to save Taxes/show wins when their weren't etc make Q's about as far from what EPS was as they can be.
You spent this much you made this much you are plus/minus this much for the Q. I usually only play retail every 10 years so that point did slip my mind that companies would show worse Q's than usual because of all the spending gearing up for holiday sales, cash on hand would be off and EPS would be off.
Peace out.

Did Hedge Funds Drop The Ball On Ascena Retail Group Inc (ASNA)?
Compared to these stocks Ascena Retail Group Inc (NASDAQ:ASNA) is more popular among hedge funds. Our calculations showed that top 20 most popular stocks among hedge funds returned 37.4% in 2019 through the end of November and outperformed the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) by 9.9 percentage points. Hedge funds were also right about betting on ASNA as the stock returned 73.1% during the first two months of Q4 and outperformed the market by an even larger margin. Hedge funds were clearly right about piling into this stock relative to other stocks with similar market capitalizations.

They sold it off June-September
Then when BK was out of the picture and Dressbarns lease/landlord issues were resolved started loading the boat, and by all signs from Thursday afternoon through Friday's close they piled in even more taking up where short term traders and shorts decided to sell the stock off after an outstanding Q as large blocks one after another after another ending at the HOD most certainly weren't traders, .18 a share in earnings is .18 a share and buying back 6% of their debt due in 2 years at .60 on the dollar is buying back debt at .60 on the dollar.
RS no RS when a stock is trading far below its value hedge funds like it as they see the future. coupe weeks the largest anchor around Ascena ASNA's neck Dress Barns 544 get cut away which means even better numbers going forward. All the "there will be nothing happening/no news til next Q" is a fantasy what does one think will happen when they lose Dressbarn and it loses the $2 million a week in losses that Dressbarn causes (2019 -$101 million)?
Think that will go unnoticed, unreported ignored, not taken into account, think again. RS or no RS "all big name billion dollar companies don't drop after an RS most/all go the opposite direction" watch and learn kids.
Short volume +50% Friday and still it rises

Peace out.
MR its a beautiful thing, finally getting multiple upgrades and some respect with deep pocket players loading.
I was along in the wilderness with this one for the longest time, no one seemed interested. As long as they keep doing what they do all is well in the world.
Been a holder/adder since .20's not exciting but makes money.
Peace out.
On Tuesday, Ascena Retail Group (ASNA) , which owns Ann Taylor, Loft, Lane Bryant, Catherine's and Justice and is in the process of shutting down Dressbarn, released surprisingly good first-quarter results. The market has seemingly presumed bankruptcy for Ascena due to declining results and a debt load seen as unmanageable, but the company is making the case that it may not be dead yet.
While same-store sales were flat (excluding Dressbarn, which saw those sales up 10%), Ascena earned 16 cents per share from continuing operations. Unfortunately, the company no longer garners any analyst coverage, so while there were no estimates for comparison, it looked like a decent quarter overall. ASNA ended the quarter with $262 million in cash, which was down from $328 million at the end of last quarter, primarily due to building its inventory in anticipation of the holiday shopping season.
There was an encouraging sign on the debt front; subsequent to the end of the quarter, Ascena repurchased $80 million of its term loan (due 2022) for $50 million. That tells you a couple things. First, the debt is trading at a deep discount due to bankruptcy fears, and second, the company is confident enough to spend $50 million of its cash to take advantage of the discount. Ascena's debt stood at $1.34 billion at the end of the quarter, and the company has prepaid quarterly interest payments through November 2020.
Market reaction to Tuesday's results was interesting to say the least. Ascena shares were up as much as 35% in pre-market trading, opened 25% higher, were up as much as 43% during the day, but closed up just 2%. Volume of more than 17 million shares was more than five times average volume.
Clearly, there's a lot going on here. Ascena is a distressed name for sure, but one that is in better shape than the market presumes. In addition, there has been a great deal of short interest, to the tune of 32.7 million shares, or nearly 19% of the float, as of Nov. 29. I presume there was some short covering on Tuesday, but we'll know when the new short interest figures are released. So there's the real possibility of a short squeeze.
I am still waiting to buy shares for .06-.10 you promised more than a year ago when it was heading from 1 to 2 that .06 shares were coming, I am still waiting.
Peace out.
Well I trimmed out 63% my shares and am now riding free, so I will hold the rest of my sack. Sold the oldest shares today to benefit from the paper loss as they were bought in the .40's and /50's hopefully this will continue to turn around, will just ride out the storm from this point with the .10-.14 shares, honestly though was going to be a 100% loss, but somehow some way they pulled it off.
Here is hoping going forward, looking forward to the holiday numbers maybe can break .05 EPS and continue to get rid of some old inventory margins are less but carrying old merch is useless.
Peace out.
LOL they do what they do ha ha. I added my last little bit 100K .464-.476 will regret not adding more no doubt like the last 10K I added of RCEL @5 rethink that moment a dozen times a week LOL.
Didn't planning on buying any but its less than 1/3 of what earnings were this Q and less than 25% of what they will be for 2020 its just a no brainer.
Traders play today they will be off to something else tomorrow.
Will be good we get a RS we can lose the small money people they aren't much individually but get 400-500 of them each with their $1-3K they can cause short term chaos as they make their couple hundred for the day.
Peace out.
