UK gamers charged more for inferior PS3
By David Derbyshire, Consumer Affairs Editor
Last Updated: 5:49pm GMT 23/02/2007
British gamers wanting to get their hands on the new Playstation 3 will have to pay £100 more than their American counterparts for an inferior machine.
Around 250,000 PS3s are being shipped to Britain for the launch, to ensure stocks do not run low
Sony today announced that the European version of its games console will only play a "limited number" of old Playstation 2 titles when it goes to sale next month.
The American model, in contrast, has much better "backwards compatibility" and plays almost all the old Playstation games.
The revelation has infuriated British computer games enthusiasts who say they are repeatedly treated like second class citizens by Sony.
Not only was the launch of the Playstation 3, or PS3, delayed in Europe for three months, but the console costs £425 in Britain - £105 more than its American price tag.
advertisementSony is also refusing to make the cheaper 20GB version of the PS3 available in Europe despite selling it in America and Japan. British gamers will have to buy the most expensive 60GB model.
Backwards compatibility is a big issue for gamers, particularly those who already own a Playstation 2 and want to upgrade to the new, more powerful, games console.
When the PS3 launches on March 23, they will either have to keep their old machine, or throw out their old games.
The reaction to the news from dedicated games fans today was swift and angry. One contributor to the Eurogamer website said: "To do this to early adopters when there's very little quality PS3 software around is absolutely disgraceful, especially as they're charging more money than other regions and giving them less hardware."
Another wrote: "The Euro PS3 is more expensive than anywhere else in the world, is being released later than anywhere else in the world and now is actually inferior to the model being sold everywhere else in the world."
Sony defended its decision, claiming that gamers would benefit.
David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said: "Rather than concentrate on Playstation 2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology." A few years ago Sony's dominance of the games market was assured. The Playstation and Playstation 2 were market leaders, loved by dedicated players and casual fans.
That dominance should have continued with the faster, more powerful PS3. The new console runs "next generation" games with cinema-quality special effects and plays high definition movies using the Blu-ray disc format.
However, Sony was slow to develop the PS3. Microsoft launched its XBox360 high definition console more than a year ago, while Nintendo astonished the industry with the success of its much cheaper Wii machine before Christmas.
In Japan and America, the PS3 is in second place, behind the Wii. That pattern is likely to follow in Europe.
Ellie Gibson, editor of the online news website Gamesindustry.biz said there were signs of a Sony backlash.
"There is definitely a buzz because Playstation is such a huge brand and it is the market leader," she said. "But there is a definitely a backlash in the hard core community because of the price and the backwards compatibility issue."
It is too early to say whether the PS3 launch will be disappointing for Sony. During the run up to the Nintendo Wii before Christmas, retailers found it hard to get enough consoles to meet demand and many ran out of stock.
Industry experts believe the supply of PS3s will be much greater - with some estimating that 250,000 are being shipped to Britain for the launch.
Yesterday, most stores were still taking pre-orders and promising delivery on the launch date.
HMV, Woolworths, Argos, Game and Amazon said they could still offer PS3s for March 23. Play.com said demand was greater than for the Wii or Xbox, but that it was avoiding stock shortages.
An Argos spokesman added: "We have been taking pre-orders for the PS3 since the start of February and demand has been extremely high. In fact this has been our most successful pre-order campaign for a console ever. We still have plenty of stock."
