I like to watch the newer comedians too. Tim Allen, Will Ferrell, Mark Russell are three that pop into my head. But my favorites are the older ones Laurel & Hardy, the 3 Stooges, etc. Lot of good new comedians though.
New Species of Bird Found in Remote Northeastern India
Tuesday, September 12, 2006
NEW DELHI — A new bird species has been found in India, the first time such a discovery has been made here in more than 50 years, an astronomer and keen bird watcher said Tuesday.
The multicolored bird, Bugun liocichla, was spotted in May in the remote Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary in India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh near the border with China, said Ramana Athreya, a member of Mumbai's Natural History Society.
Athreya, who found the bird, named it after the Bugun tribe, which lives in the area. The bird has a black cap, a bright yellow patch around the eyes and yellow, crimson, black and white patches on the wings, he told The Associated Press.
Birdlife International, a global alliance of conservation organizations, described it on its Web site Tuesday as "the most sensational ornithological discovery in India for more than half a century."
Athreya caught two of the species, but released them after making detailed notes and taking photographs — and keeping feathers that had worked loose in his net.
"We thought the bird was just too rare for one to be killed," Athreya said.
"With today's modern technology, we could gather all the information we needed to confirm it as a new species. We took feathers and photographs and recorded the bird's songs," he said.
Though the bird was discovered in May, the news was kept under wraps until it was confirmed that it was a new species.
Athreya said he had first briefly spotted the bird in 1995. "But it was only this year I had a sufficiently good look that we could move into the matter."
U.S. trade gap widens to record $68.0 bln in July

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. trade deficit widened by 5.0% in July to a record $68.0 billion, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. The July deficit surpasses the previous monthly record of $66.6 billion set in October. The trade deficit was above the consensus forecast of Wall Street economists of a deficit of $65.4 billion. The deficit was $64.8 billion in June. Imports rose while exports declined in July. The U.S. trade deficit with China widened to $19.6 billion in compared with $17.6 bln in the same month last year. (Corrected to show that the previous record was last October.)
Yes I was looking on IMDB they were on the radio from 1931 - 1954. Chester Lauck never played any other character except Lum in his 35 year career on radio and movies. Norris Goff (Abner) also appeared in "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Gomer Pyle"

Italian recluse taken from apartment after 26 years Mon Sep 11, 9:33 AM ET
MILAN (Reuters) - When Italian health officials came to remove a woman from the apartment she has not left in more than two decades they had to don respirators against the stench, newspapers reported Sunday.
The woman, named only as "Carmela," was in her late 50s, weighed about 30 kg (66 pounds) and had hair two metres (seven feet) long when officials came to take her to hospital, La Repubblica, Il Giorno and La Stampa newspapers reported.
Firefighters and health officials in Macerata, a city about 200 km (120 miles) northeast of Rome, found the apartment's windows sealed with adhesive tape and the shutters jammed shut.
A bout of influenza 26 years ago terrified Carmela so much that she tried to seal herself off from germs by barricading herself in her home, the papers said.
Her plight came to the attention of Italian authorities after her brother, who leaves tinned food outside her front door, called police to say that upcoming medical treatment would prevent him from carrying on.
"Adamo" has not seen his sister in 10 years, La Republicca reported.
Carmela's main contact with neighbors has been to shout a single message through her door.
"Shut the window on the landing!"

Funny, funny show. I got this one on DVD.
Good show. Has two of the Stooges in it, Shemp Howard and Joe Besser. And the former heavyweight boxing champion Max Baer.
Very good book "Profiting with Forex" ElderWolf. I finished reading it a few minutes ago. Gives a lot of information on both fundamental and technical analysis plus some good money management rules. I found the chapter on "Support, Resistance, and Fibonacci" to be most interesting. Also liked the parts on inflation, China, and oil. Thanks for recommending the book.
Your Welcome. I prefer reading the President in his own words instead of the spin/opinion we get in the news.
Office of the Press Secretary
September 9, 2006
President's Radio Address
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This Monday, our Nation will mark the 5th anniversary of the attacks of September the 11th, 2001. On this solemn occasion, Americans will observe a day of prayer and remembrance, and Laura and I will travel to New York City, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon to take part in memorial ceremonies. Our Nation honors the memory of every person we lost on that day of terror, and we pray that the Almighty will continue to comfort the families who had so much taken away from them.
On this anniversary, we also remember the brutality of the enemy who struck our country and renew our resolve to defeat this enemy and secure a future of peace and freedom.
So this week I've given a series of speeches about the nature of our enemy, the stakes of the struggle, and the progress we have made during the past five years. On Tuesday in Washington, I described in the terrorists own words what they believe, what they hope to accomplish, and how they intend to accomplish it. We know what the terrorists intend, because they have told us. They hope to establish a totalitarian Islamic empire across the Middle East, which they call a Caliphate, where all would be ruled according to their hateful ideology.
Osama bin Laden has called the 9/11 attacks, "A great step towards the unity of Muslims and establishing the righteous [Caliphate]." Al Qaeda and its allies reject any possibility of coexistence with those they call "infidels." Hear the words of Osama bin Laden: "Death is better than living on this earth with the unbelievers amongst us." We must take the words of these extremists seriously, and we must act decisively to stop them from achieving their evil aims.
On Wednesday at the White House, I described for the first time a CIA program we established after 9/11 to detain and question key terrorist leaders and operatives, so we can prevent new terrorist attacks. This program has been invaluable to the security of America and its allies, and helped us identify and capture men who our intelligence community believes were key architects of the September the 11th attacks.
Information from terrorists held by the CIA also helped us uncover an al Qaeda cell's efforts to obtain biological weapons, identify individuals sent by al Qaeda to case targets for attacks in the United States, stop the planned strike on a U.S. Marine base in Djibouti, prevent an attack on the U.S. consulate in Karachi, and help break up a plot to hijack passenger planes and fly them into Heathrow Airport or the Canary Wharf in London.
Information from the terrorists in CIA custody has also played a role in the capture or questioning of nearly every senior al Qaeda member or associate detained by the U.S. and its allies since this program began. Were it not for this program, our intelligence community believes that al Qaeda and its allies would have succeeded in launching another attack against the American homeland. We have largely completed our questioning of these men, and now it is time that they are tried for their crimes.
So this week I announced that the men we believe orchestrated the 9/11 attacks had been transferred to Guantanamo Bay. And I called on Congress to pass legislation creating military commissions to try suspected terrorists for war crimes. As soon as Congress acts to authorize these military commissions, we will prosecute these men and send a clear message to those who kill Americans: No matter how long it takes, we will find you and bring you to justice.
As we bring terrorists to justice, we're acting to secure the homeland. On Thursday in Atlanta, I delivered a progress report on the steps we have taken since 9/11 to protect the American people and win the war on terror. We are safer today because we've acted to address the gaps in security, intelligence, and information sharing that the terrorists exploited in the 9/11 attacks. No one can say for sure that we would have prevented the attacks had these reforms been in place in 2001 -- yet, we can say that terrorists would have found it harder to plan and finance their operations, harder to slip into our country undetected, and harder to board the planes, take control of the cockpits, and succeed in striking their targets.
America still faces determined enemies. And in the long run, defeating these enemies requires more than improved security at home and military action abroad. We must also offer a hopeful alternative to the terrorists' hateful ideology. So America is taking the side of democratic leaders and reformers and supporting the voices of tolerance and moderation across the Middle East. By advancing freedom and democracy as the great alternative to repression and radicalism, and by supporting young democracies like Iraq, we are helping to bring a brighter future to this region -- and that will make America and the world more secure.
The war on terror will be long and difficult, and more tough days lie ahead. Yet, we can have confidence in the final outcome, because we know what America can achieve when our Nation acts with resolve and clear purpose. With vigilance, determination and courage, we will defeat the enemies of freedom, and we will leave behind a more peaceful world for our children and our grandchildren.
Thank you for listening.
END

Chase Tosses Personal Information on 2.6 Million Credit Card Holders
Thursday, September 07, 2006
NEW YORK — Personal information on 2.6 million past and current Circuit City (CC) credit card holders was mistakenly thrown out as trash, a division of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM) said Thursday.
Chase Card Services said it mistakenly tossed out computer tapes with the personal information of Circuit City card holders. It said it believes the tapes, inside a locked box, were compacted, destroyed and buried in a landfill.
"We deeply regret that this has occurred and apologize to those impacted," Chase Card Services Chief Executive Rich Srednicki said in a statement.
In the past year, several U.S. companies have reported lost or stolen personal data on customers and employees. One of the largest mishaps happened at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which said in May that data on 26.5 million veterans was stolen.
Chase said it has begun notifying customers and is monitoring affected accounts and has not identified any misuse of personal information. A free, one-year credit monitoring service is being offered to individuals whose social security number was on the thrown out tapes.
No other Chase accounts are involved in this incident, the bank said. Chase Card Services issues bank-branded and private-label credit cards for electronics retailer Circuit City.
"We certainly empathize with the affected cardholders, but this is a business that is administered by Chase," a Circuit City spokesman said.
I agree, WOW. I hadn't seen that. I can't believe all the videos we can get for free off the internet now.
Fed Beige Books sees slower growth in many regions
By Greg Robb
Last Update: 2:00 PM ET Sep 6, 2006
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Economic activity continued to move forward in August, but there were signs of a downshift in the rate of growth, according to a Federal Reserve Beige Book survey of current economic conditions released on Wednesday. Five of the 12 Fed districts reported a "deceleration" in growth in their regions, while the other seven reported continued moderate growth. The reports of slower growth were clustered in the Northeastern region and in Kansas City. The Dallas Fed also reported slower growth, but only from super-strong to strong. There was no sign that inflationary pressures are heating up. Although there were sustained increases in the cost of metals and energy and other raw materials, the report found "most of these increases do not appear to have passed through to finished consumer goods.

Joe E Brown
Joe E Brown joined the circus in 1902 at age 10. He toured in burlesque in an acrobatic act and also briefly played semi-pro baseball. He begin his movie career in 1928. Brown alternated between playing naive young men who made good despite impossible odds, or brash braggarts who had to be taken down a peg or two. His trademark was his huge mouth, cavernous grin, and drawn out yell.

[01:30 Australian Q2 GDP Grew 0.3% (0.7% Expected)]
Went short aud/usd this afternoon. It's starting to pay off. +33 pips so far.
Yes, I just started reading it over the weekend. I'm to chapter 11 "Breaking News". I agree it's a good book. I thought the chapter on oil was very interesting. Learned a few things I didn't know.
[17:57 AUD/USD: No Rate Rise Expected from RBA Tonight] San Francisco, September 5. The AUD/USD continues to hold onto afternoon gains but no rate rise is tipped by the RBA tonight and since the central bank does not issue a statement when it does not change rates, traders will be forced to continue to watch data to gauge the likely outlook for Australian rates. The latest data shows a mixed economy with the ACCI-Westpac survey released last night of industrial trends showing that the manufacturing sector remains robust. But data from the automotive industry shows that car and truck sales dipped 5.2% in August. In addition, the AIG-Commonwealth Bank PSI showed that the services sector in Australia stagnated, dropping to 50.2 in August. A fall under 50.0 will reflect a contraction. The Australian also warns today of a slide to negative equity in housing with mortgages that are higher than the value of housing.
The Australian press today also notes that expectations favor a rate hike before the year is out with Nov 8th tipped as the likely date. GDP data for Q2 is due later tonight with median expectations for a 0.7% rise taking annual growth to 2.6% though note that this is down from median expectations of a 0.9% rise last week. The data may help solidify the rate outlook for Australia. Option defense of 0.7725 continues to stall gains with AUD at 0.7708/13 currently.

Tests May Indicate 'Significant' Oil Discovery in Gulf of Mexico
Tuesday, September 05, 2006
OSLO, Norway — Tests of a deep-water well in the Gulf of Mexico could indicate a significant oil discovery, three companies announced Tuesday, in the first project to tap into a region that reportedly could boost U.S. oil and gas reserves by as much as 50 percent.
The Jack 2 well was drilled by U.S. oil company Chevron Corp. (CVX), with partners Statoil ASA of Norway and Devon Energy Corp. (DVN) of Oklahoma City.
"Test results are very encouraging and may indicate a significant discovery. The full magnitude of the field's potential is still being defined," Statoil said in a statement.
During the test, the Jack 2 well sustained a flow rate of more than 6,000 barrels of oil per day, Statoil said.
The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the region where the well is located could become the nation's biggest new domestic source of oil since the discovery of Alaska's North Slope more than a generation ago.
The Journal said Chevron and Devon officials estimate that recent discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico's lower-tertiary formations hold up to 15 billion barrels' worth of oil and gas reserves, a total that would boost the nation's current reserves by 50 percent.
The well was drilled in the Walker Ridge area of the Gulf, about 270 miles southwest of New Orleans and 175 miles off the coast. It followed up a discovery made by Chevron in 2004.
"This area is one of the new and promising deep-water areas in the Gulf of Mexico," said Oivind Reinertsen, senior vice president of Statoil's Gulf of Mexico assets in Houston.
"The Jack 2 well test data are encouraging and may form the basis of future development projects in Walker Ridge," he said.
In a separate statement, San Ramon, Calif.-based Chevron said the well set a variety of records, including the deepest well successfully tested in the Gulf of Mexico. Chevron said it was drilled to a total depth of 28,175 feet in waters that are 7,000 feet deep.
Chevron has a 50 percent stake in the field, while Statoil and Devon own 25 percent each.

Cardinal says Pope John Paul was spied on
Informers reportedly worked for Polish secret services in the communist era
Updated: 2 hours, 19 minutes ago
ROME - Pope John Paul was spied on by Vatican informers working for the Polish secret services in the communist era, a Polish cardinal was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
Cardinal Joseph Glemp, archbishop of Warsaw, was quoted as telling Italy’s ANSA news agency that John Paul was the target of espionage between his election in 1978 and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
John Paul was “spied on, and how,” ANSA quoted Glemp as saying in Assisi, where he was attending a religious conference.
Glemp was repeating allegations that have surfaced in Poland since John Paul’s death last year. He is one of the highest ranking Polish churchmen to speak about them openly.
“There were spies in the Vatican. Moscow had great interest in knowing what was going on in Rome with a Polish pope in office,” he was quoted as saying.
John Paul was the first pope from a communist country. He supported the Solidarity free trade union which challenged communism in Poland in the years leading up to the collapse of the Soviet bloc.
Soviets behind assassination attempt?
Earlier this year, an Italian parliamentary report said Soviet leaders planned the failed assassination attempt on John Paul in 1981 because they feared he would destabilize the East bloc.
Last year, documents released by the Polish National Remembrance Institute, which oversees research into communist-era files, said it had evidence that Father Konrad Hejmo had been an informer for the Polish security services.
Hejmo was for many years in charge of Polish pilgrims visiting Rome and was close to the papal entourage.
Hejmo has denied being a spy, saying he was “naive” because he had shared information with a Pole living in Germany who was later uncovered as a spy.
But Glemp said he was convinced that Hejmo had been a spy.
“Certainly, he was a spy. The documents and papers that were made public last year prove it. Personally, I am convinced that Father Hejmo made accusations and wrote reports,” ANSA quoted Glemp as saying.
Two months ago, Poles were shocked to learn that a leading Catholic priest in Poland, Father Michal Czajkowski, had admitted spying on dissidents and clerics for communist secret services in Poland for nearly 25 years.
The National Remembrance Institute says that up to 10 percent of priests in Poland may have knowingly or unknowingly worked with the secret services.
My favorite British comedy
Fawlty Towers
John Cleese....Basil Fawlty
Prunella Scales....Sybil Fawlty
Andrew Sachs....Manuel
Connie Booth....Polly
Only 2 seasons and 12 shows were made. I like this plot outline from IMDB:
Inept and manic English hotel owner and manager, Basil Fawlty, isn't cut out for his job. He's intolerant, rude and paranoid. All hell frequently breaks loose as Basil tries to run the hotel, constantly under verbal (and sometime physical) attack from his unhelpful wife Sybil, and hindered by the incompetent, but easy target, Manuel; their Spanish waiter.
They're not as well remembered as other comedy teams of the time like the Three Stooges or Laural & Hardy. They were funny though. If you like shows like Green Acres or Petticoat Junction you would probably like Lum & Abner.
I finally got around to reading that e-book "Cooking In The Forex". Some interesting stuff in there. Thanks for posting it.
Lum (Chester Lauck) and Abner (Norris Goff) played the co-owners of the "Jot 'em Down Store" in the fictional town of Pine Ridge Arkansas. They aired on the radio from 1932 - 1954. And Made 7 movies:
Dreaming Out Loud (1940)
The Bashful Bachelor (1942)
Two Weeks To Live (1943)
So This Is Washington (1943)
Going To Town (1944)
Partners in Time (1946)
Lum and Abner Abroad (1956)
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) plays their shows sometimes. That's where I saw them.
Here are some movie posters of them.
