Was IDCC's ITC filing their response to NOK's filing of appeal? Both filed on the same day. IMO, just keeping pressure on NOK in the absence of the CAFC ruling.

IMO..Lets also not forget the fact that the success of Apple's i-Phone and Google's Android OS has created a whole new market paradigm. The Nortel patent sale merely establhised a value for this new dynamic. Had both Apple and Google been unsuccessful in their entry into the wireless world, I believe the Nortel patents would have been sold in the 100's of millions and it would still be all about NOK.
Thank you Apple and Google for breaking that seemingly stranglehold on the wireless market.
I hope to enjoy a buy as much or more as they enjoy a sale!!
What is it with these negative headlines....

The point is it cost NOK $500,000. The same point IDCC wants NOK to license their patents; that is, pay for the IDCC resources/IP that NOK uses at IDCC expense.

Latest Key DevelopmentsInterDigital, Inc. Issues Q1 2011 Revenue Guidance Below Analysts' Estimates
Wednesday, 23 Feb 2011 06:48pm EST
InterDigital, Inc. announced that for the first quarter of 2011, it expects revenue contributions from existing agreements to be in the range of $76 million to $77 million. According to Reuters Estimates, analysts were expecting the Company to report revenue of $87 million for the first quarter of 2011.
IMO..The market seems to pay more attention to an observation that IDCC did not meet some external entities guess-timate of what quarter's EPS should be versus the reality that IDCC had a great quarter based upon the following highlights.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/InterDigital-Announces-Fourth-bw-2486926550.html?x=0&.v=1

Jim, the dividend trasaction itself will not show up in my transaction history until tomorrow, however, the additional cash in my cash available for trading balance calculates exactly to the 10 cent per share IDCC dividend in all three of my accounts.
Dividend...in my 3 Scottrade accounts.
The world is finally determining that wireless is NOT just about NOK. With Windows 7 Mobile and Android as very viable and successful wireless operating system platforms, any technology manufacturer can create a wireless product.
IMO, NOK (Elop) is going to announce that same realization and start making smart phone with Windows 7 Mobile and/or Android to get some kind of market share in smart phones.
vg_future, your comment about only NOK's numbers can beat everyone else's conservative numbers, reminded me of the royalty payment check that NOK sent to QCOM in one of their more recent license disputes and QCOM summarily returned it to NOK (if memory serves me correctly).
Great discussion. Thanks eom.
NJ...Excellent article. Thanks for all the work you do for this stock.
IQ and NJ...certainly glad you were able to attend the hearing. You both have done a tremdendous service to this board with your detailed report.
IQ, if you saw the guy get up and leave the courtroom after his phone rang in the court room, you looked directly toward me. I was the guy wearing a long-sleeved blue/white shirt sitting one row in front of the person who left the courtroom. Quilix was sitting across the ailse from me.
Quilix, it was a pleasure to meet you as well.
Good luck to all longs.
IQ...Thanks for attending and sharing all your notes from the hearing. I was present at the hearing. I concur with your summation of the judges' demeanor, the respective IDCC, ITC, and NOK presentations. the IDCC rebuttal, and the proceedings overall.
IMO, Dunner did a very good job of presenting the facts in IDDC's case and in his final rebuttal. On several occasions, Dunner gave specific references to pages in the IDCC brief to substantiate his tehnical point or his point in law to the panel of judges.
IMO, Ms. Valentine had difficulty in making a clear case in support of the ITC ruling by the ALJ.
IMO, NOK had to spend time recovering from the ITC's disjointed and confusing presentation of the ITC's case.
IMO, Bryson was the most engaged by asking questions followed by Newman. I assume that since Newman sat in the center chair, she is the chief judge for this panel. Mayer was quiet almost to the point of seeming disinterest. Mayer certainly did not engage himself in the proceeeding like the other two judges.
As IQ reported, Dunner definitely had a broad chesire grin on his face as he left the courtroom.
While Dunner was waiting for the elevator, Dunner turned to those around him (I assume his collegues) and said with that same smile; We will see you back here next week. That comment was followed by some light-hearted laughter. IMO...I took his comment to mean that he expects to be back at CAFC next week to hear the judges ruling in favor of IDCC.
Partly cloudy, the sun is shining, and the roads are clear.
True, but I was hoping DR or someone else from the IHUB board might have attended CES to give us their IHUB'er on-location report.
Does anyone know what IDCC preseneted in their booth at the CES?
Verizon Finally Lands the iPhone
By SHAYNDI RAICE and YUKARI IWATANI KANE
The phoned is finally coming to Verizon Wireless.
The largest U.S. wireless carrier will make the long-awaited announcement at an event Tuesday in New York City, a person familiar with the matter said Friday.
The move will for the first time let U.S. consumers choose the network that carries their iPhone and perhaps give them additional pricing options that could affect their monthly bills.
It will also upend the balance of power in the industry, ending Verizon rival AT&T Inc.'s exclusive hold on the device and leaving smaller players like Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA facing two well-capitalized competitors offering the world's most popular smartphone.
It wasn't immediately clear when Verizon would have the device in stores.
The Verizon phone will be similar to the iPhone 4 but run on the carrier's CDMA technology, people familiar with the matter have said.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group Plc.
Apple is moving to expand its carrier base in the U.S. at a time when it is facing increasing pressure from phones powered by rival Google Inc.'s operating system, called Android.
Google gives its software away, hoping to stake out space on mobile phones where it can sell ads and other services.
Android-based phones passed the iPhone in sales in the second quarter, according to research firm Gartner. The surge appeared to get to Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, who made a rare appearance on a conference call with analysts in October and criticized Android as fragmented, referring to the myriad ways the software appears on the many different phones that use it.
AT&T has had the iconic device to itself since its introduction in June 2007.
Since then, the iPhone has fueled much of the carrier's subscriber growth and has given it a solid lead in smartphone customers.
The arrangement between Apple and AT&T was groundbreaking at a time when carriers tightly controlled the appearance and function of their phones, and put Silicon Valley companies like Apple and Google in the wireless industry's driver's seat.
Verizon will announce on Tuesday that the network will support Apple's iPhone. Earlier, MarketWatch's John Letzing talked with Lauren Rudser about a cryptic invitation Verizon sent and the significance of the anticipated announcement.
Apple feels it has had tremendous success through its exclusive relationship with AT&T, but it recognized that it needs to partner with Verizon to grow sales faster in the U.S., a person familiar with the matter said.
"It's a big boost for Apple," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of New York-based Solaris Asset Managmenet which counts Apple in its portfolio worth $2 billion. "It opens up a huge uninstalled base for them in this country."
Verizon Wireless fought its way back into the smartphone race last year by heavily promoting Google-powered phones made by companies like Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. and HTC Corp.
Top Verizon executives have continued to meet regularly with their counterparts at Apple, however, and have long expressed interest in carrying the iPhone, which could help add to the carrier's base of 93 million subscribers. Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst at Sanford Bernstein, has estimated that Verizon could add more than 10 million U.S. iPhone customers.
"It's great news," said Michael Benkoski, 55 years old, who works at a technology leasing company in Chicago. "I've been waiting for it for about two years."
IPhone users have long complained about dropped calls and poor service on AT&T's network, even as the carrier boosted spending to improve coverage. A Consumer Reports survey last month ranked Verizon's network as most reliable among the major carriers and AT&T's as the worst.
Analysts fear AT&T could see one to three million fewer new subscribers because of the Verizon iPhone. AT&T has been preparing for a loss of exclusivity, however.
This summer, it made it easier for customers to upgrade to the new iPhone 4, in the process locking them into new two-year service contracts. The carrier says many are also on family or business plans, making it tricky to switch.
Colby Synesael, an analyst with investment bank Cowen and Co., said that "the loss of the iPhone is more of a headline risk than a financial impact."
Smaller carriers like No. 3 Sprint and No. 4 T-Mobile could be harder hit, however.
"This is the worst case scenario for the other carriers," said Roger Entner of Recon Analytics. "When Verizon comes out with the iPhone, there's only one carrier in the U.S. that will gain customers, and that's Verizon."
While Verizon's network is popularly perceived to be better than AT&T's, it has yet to be tested by the heavy volume of data use that accompanies the iPhone. The carrier has been strengthening and testing its network for months to avoid the public relations nightmare AT&T has suffered from, one person familiar has said. Verizon executives also point to their success handling laptop traffic and the data demands of a growing base of Android phones.
Analysts will be eager to know when other U.S. carriers might also get to carry the iPhone. They aree also waiting to see whether Apple will offer the CDMA iPhone to other CDMA operators around the world in countries such as in India and China.
Verizon sent out invitations for an event to be held in New York City on Tuesday asking that recipients "Join us as we share the latest news," but didn't specify the subject matter. The event will be headlined by Lowell McAdam, president and chief operating officer of Verizon Communications.
The event threatens to overshadow Verizon's keynote address Thursday at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, where the carrier touted its new 4G network and announced a number of Google-powered phones and tablet PCs designed to make use of the network's capabilities.

Verizon iPhone will be announced Tuesday:
reportBy Suzanne Choney
The news many consumers have been waiting for — that Verizon Wireless would finally carry Apple's iPhone — will be announced Tuesday, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
"The largest U.S. wireless carrier will make the long-awaited announcement at an event Tuesday in New York City, a person familiar with the matter said Friday," the Journal reported, although there was no word on when the iPhone would be available for sale.
It will be the first time since the iPhone was released in 2007 that it's sold by more than one carrier in the United States. AT&T has had an exclusive contract for the phone until now.
The phone's arrival on Verizon's network comes not a moment too soon: In the past year, sales of phones running Android, Google's mobile operating system, and available at all four major carriers, have steadily been eating into the iPhone's market.
Last month, tracking firm comScore said that the number of smart phone owners who use Google's Android OS in the U.S. is almost as great as those who use the iPhone.
Word of Tuesday's announcement was indicated earlier today by our own Wilson Rothman, who first published the invite for the mysterious event. He noted that it would be hosted by Lowell McAdam, president and COO of Verizon Wireless's parent company, Verizon. Wrote Rothman:
"After a week of high-level Verizon Wireless announcements surrounding the carrier's launch of 4G LTE, we get yet another invitation, this time to an event sharing 'the latest news' hosted by a bigger cheese than any of the super high level guys here at CES in Las Vegas. So what is it? We assume that Apple will announce the Verizon iPhone before Verizon does, but seriously, Verizon? If this thing isn't an iPhone, you are going to have an angry mob on your hands. We love LTE, but bring it out already!"
In survey after survey over the past three-plus years, iPhone users haven't had a lot of complaints, but AT&T's exclusivity and service has been among them. The carrier has been working furiously to improve its network, especially in the past year.
Despite that, Consumer Reports said last month that AT&T is the "lowest-scoring cell-phone carrier in the U.S., according to a satisfaction survey of 58,000 ConsumerReports.org readers. Of all the carriers rated, AT&T was the only one to drop significantly in overall satisfaction."
More than half of survey respondents with AT&T owned "some verison of the iPhone," Consumer Reports said. The magazine’s data, "reflecting all versions of the phone, found that iPhone owners were much less satisfied with their carrier and rated data service (Web and e-mail) lower than owners of smart phones on other carriers that, like the iPhone, have a host of apps to encourage heavy data use.
"Our survey suggests that an iPhone from Verizon Wireless, which is rumored, could indeed be good news for iPhone fans,” said Paul Reynolds, the magazine's electronics editor.

Absent any very positive IDCC news out of KOP to provide support for the current increase in PPS, it may be nothing more than the anticipation of a settlement with NOK favorable to IDCC on the courthouse steps in advance of the oral arguments on January 13.
I believe an increase in PPS has occurred on prior occasions in the IDCC/NOK saga.
I am still hoping for a LG license with all the LTE-based product being promoted by LG at the CES.
JMHO
Quite possibly LG announces its product launches today, IDCC announces the LG license tonight or tomorrow morning so not to steal the initial limelight from LG.
JMHO
The Reuters clip is a very good mention. I still have (want) to believe there is more to come in order to explain this signigicant price movement.
JMHO
These type of announcements by LG is the reason I believe that IDCC shall announce a license with LG that includes LTE.

JMHO
IMO..I believe IDCC shall announce the LG license renewal with LTE included in the renewal. Possibly IDCC licensed the SlimChip modem core to LG.
My apology if the article below was already posted.

LG claims first LTE terminal modem chip design
By Will Strauss
Forward Concepts
Will brings us up to date on Long Term Evolution (LTE) development issues, including its role as a catalyst for new modem (baseband) designs.
Announced in early December, LG Electronics claims to have developed the world's first Long Term Evolution (LTE) terminal modem chip. Developed at the company's Mobile Communication Technology Research Lab in Anyang, Korea, the device is said to have achieved wireless download speeds of 60 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps. The fastest HSDPA cellphones currently on the market have a maximum download speed of 7.6 Mbps.
Considering that the initial 3GPP (Release 8) LTE specification was frozen only about three weeks ago, and final approval is not expected before March 2009, we doubt that the chip is even close to being productized. Besides, it requires substantial backward compatibility with GSM/GPRS/UMTS and/or CDMA 1xEV-DO to be a real cell phone product. No information has been released on process geometry or power consumption, so it's unclear how far LG is from having a viable product. And when the chip is ready for production will LG cease buying advanced basebands from its current main 3G supplier, Qualcomm?
A slap at Qualcomm?
LG claims that through its own LTE development it has secured 300 (applicable?) patents. According to a company spokesman, LG “will see a dramatic decrease in its license burden.” LG's spokesman also says that, “since it now has the technology, it has the upper hand to greatly lower LTE license costs through negotiation. And if it supplies chips to other firms in the course of commercialization, it can secure additional license cost reduction.”
Multicore DSPs for LTE
With the additional processing demands that LTE brings over that of UMTS, we are hearing of new modem (baseband) designs that will employ between six and eight very small DSP cores. Tensilica's announced licensees in Japan for multicore implementation include Fujitsu, NEC, and Panasonic. We suspect that the Japanese semiconductor houses, long noted for strong inter-company relationships, have an overall grand architecture in mind. We have also heard rumors of a six-core baseband architecture underway in the West, due to be announced this summer.
With several tiny (45-nm) programmable cores, each with a dedicated set of tasks and algorithms, it becomes possible to employ different clock speeds and individual power control for each core and so to generate additional computing horsepower at lower overall power consumption. Such a feat is impossible with a single-DSP approach...that would require a higher clock speed, resulting in greater power consumption. In a multicore architecture, a dedicated FFT engine (for OFDM) could clock at a higher speed than a core dedicated to, say, channel estimation. We'll keep you informed as we get more information.
Freescale enters netbook chip market
Following on the heels of Qualcomm's announced netbook market entry, Freescale has announced its entry to that market with its i.MX515 application processor chip. The i.MX515 is based on the ARM Cortex A8 architecture, but with some differences from other ARM V7 implementations (like Qualcomm's Snapdragon and TI's OMAP 3). The Freescale product supports both mobile DDR2 and far-cheaper DDR2 memory (at one-fifth the cost of mobile DDR2). The company claims that a complete bill of materials, including the i.MX515, associated chips (PMU, audio codec, accelerometer, and touch sensor), and Linux can be as little as $20.00, compared to about $60.00 for an Intel Atom-based XP solution...leading to the possibility of a $200 netbook with much longer battery life.
Massively parallel processor chip companies: Fewer in number
With the recent demise of Ambric, Inc., we felt that it was time to review the status of companies working on massively parallel processor chips. Although Ambric's technology appeared to be solid and was gaining market momentum, in November Ambric abruptly announced that it was shutting down its operations and would be trying to sell the company and/or its IP. The company's VC backers declined to invest at the next level, presumably feeling that under current market conditions their exit strategy (usually an IPO) would be a long way off.
Table 1 presents our understanding of the current status of the most recent crop of massively parallel processor chip companies. If any of our readers have more recent information, I'd love to hear from you.

Wireless infrastructure holding up well
Shipments of traditional DSP chips were down again sharply in November (results released 12/31/08). Revenue shipments were down a whopping 33 percent from October and down almost 49 percent from November 2007. Shipments to all regions were down over 30 percent, including Asia Pacific (Taiwan, China, Korea, and Singapore). All applications were down substantially, with the exception of wireless infrastructure, which was down only a modest 3.4 percent.
Cell phone processors, consisting of both DSP basebands and application processors, are reported in two major categories by WSTS (cell phone DSPs and cell phone SoCs). Combined, their November revenue shipments were down only 12 percent from the previous month.
Overall DSP shipments appear to be headed for a 2008 revenue drop of 14 percent from 2007. To put things in perspective, the DSP drop in 2001 after the “dot-com” bubble burst was a much worse 24 percent. So don't you feel better now?
As always, I invite your comments.

AT&T adds 9-inch Android tablet and e-reader to lineup
By Suzanne Choney
The Pandigital Multimedia Novel was announced by the wireless carrier Tuesday, prior to the start of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. (Even though the show doesn't technically start until Thursday, it's game on for most companies who want to get the word out about new stuff.)
The $279 price includes AT&T connectivity for book downloading; Internet browsing needs to be done via Wi-Fi only. AT&T says no contract is required. No contract is required to use Apple's iPad on AT&T's cellular network, but it does cost either $15 or $25 a month for service, depending on the amount of data used.
Barnes & Noble's NOOKbook Store will be the bookstore of choice for downloads of books, newspapers and magazines. Most books cost $9.99 or less.
But while you'll be able to surf the Internet and download Android apps from websites with the Pandigital Multimedia Novel, you won't be able to download Android apps from the Android Market, Pandigital says.
The tablet/e-reader comes with 2 GB of integrated memory for storing hundreds of books, Pandigital says. It also has an integrated SD, SDHC and MMC card reader that accepts up to 32 GB memory cards, and a "mini-USB port" for transferring eBooks and other files to the tablet.
Like Pandigital's other eReaders, the Multimedia Novel will let readers highlight text, choose different font sizes and keep bookmarks. It also has a "night-read mode" that inverts the text and background colors for "more discrete viewing," the company says.
Among other announcements from AT&T Tuesday:
• Wireless Vitality GlowCaps are now available on Amazon for $10 per cap and $15 per month for AT&T service. "The intelligent pill caps are designed to help consumers take medications regularly by sending reminder calls, weekly e-mail reports and monthly updates sent to your physician," AT&T said.
The caps fit on regular prescription bottles and use light and sound reminders. Those can be "followed by a phone call or text message so people don't miss a dose. Each time the pill bottle is opened adherence data is recorded and securely relayed to Vitality over the AT&T wireless network."
• The wireless carrier now has an agreement with BMW "to wirelessly deliver an enhanced suite of safety and infotainment services to future BMW models. These enhancements build on BMW's existing portfolio of connected services — known as BMW Assist — which includes, among others features, direct access to emergency and concierge call center services, traffic information and an online portal for weather forecasts, fuel prices, and news. Further information on enhanced services will be made available at launch."

Quilix, you will need the case number for IDCC vs ITC. Ask for the ITC and NOK reply briefs. Go to the clerks office in the court house building in Wash DC. You will go through a security check as you enter the building. Security can direct you to the clerks office. Be prepared to spend some time copying as there is only one copier and there was a waiting line. Bring cash as you will need to purchase a stored value card and place a cash value on it. You use the card on the copier to make the copioes.
Just a thought...what if all the new licensees mentioned by Bill Merritt (WM) this morning are those companies that held out on an agreement pending a NOK settlement?
Why would WM mention these names now such as MOT?
UPDATE 4-No-brand vendors hit Nokia, smartphones next-Gartner
Wed Nov 10, 2010 10:02am EST
* Q3 cellphone market sales grew 35 percent
* Growth boosted by no-brand Chinese vendors, smartphones
* No-brand vendors next to target smartphones, using Android
* Top 3 -- Nokia, Samsung, LG -- all lost market share in Q3
* Nokia market share down to 28.2 percent, lowest since 1999
(Adds details on Android)
By Tarmo Virki, European Technology Correspondent
HELSINKI, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Nokia (NOK1V.HE) and other established handset makers are quickly losing global market share to a push by Chinese no-brand vendors into emerging markets, research firm Gartner said.
Surging growth of no-brand manufacturers coupled with growing smartphone sales boosted third-quarter cellphone sales 35 percent, Gartner said on Wednesday. It raised its outlook for growth in 2010, which it forecast would top 30 percent.
No-brand manufacturers -- mostly small Chinese firms using chipsets from Mediatek (2454.TW) or Spreadtrum Communications Inc (SPRD.O) -- have this year quickly expanded their reach outside China into Africa, India, Latin America and Russia.
Next these manufacturers -- who sell in total roughly as many phones as Nokia -- will focus on smartphones, using Mediatek's new Android chipset, Gartner said.

IMO..I believe the financial institution is required to send that information to the IRS. This is how the IRS can cross check it to your tax return.
The point the Scottrade rep was making is that Scottrade does not perform tax withholding on dividend/interest/capital gains. Tax withholding and tax payment is the account holder's responsibility.
