Cadre of research assistants
Well, I am used to having research assistants, and you are one of the tops in that category, performing at a higher level than most of the graduate student research assistants I have had the privelege and honor of working with and mentoring :).
Thanks.

However, I do not own any TIVO or a Tivo set. The closest thing I own to Tivo is a hand-painted silk TIe

The question about the Chicago store is, though
Will it make money for Apple?
How much should be charged off to the advertising budget?
Ron
Fi, don't have a clue about q3 and 14
but since I do not currently have any aapl, I might view such bad news as an opportunity to purchase some shares.
What are the forecasts?
It is a beautiful store
I wonder what impact the stores are having on Apple's bottom line. Anyone have any figures on the cost of the stores v. the revenues they are bringing in?
I like them (never having been in one). Wonder if/when there will be enough information to make some statements about the business of the stores--statements based on real data :)?

Thanks Louis. EOM.
.Mac's outgoing mail server has not worked on my iMac for the past 24 hours.
I have sent mail using my ISP's outgoing mail server. First thing I did last night was to repair permissions. That did not work. Has anyone else had this issue?
Also, does anyone know the Unix command used to check the hard drive after doing a restart holding down (I think) the command and S keys?
thanks

Cotton, of the options in the dallasfed article
I like depreciating the dollar the best. I did not read the street.com article, cause it wanted me to register and I don't particularly care for Cramer :)
thanks cotton,
If bankrupting the country were not a current obsession of the party in power, talk of tax options would not be needed. Instead we could be talking about how we were going to allocate the interest we are currently paying on the national debt as it got paid down.

Sophomoric
Now we need the demographics of iChat via OS X broken out. I suspect those are significantly different than the general AOL subscriber base.

Also, Matt, if Apple were to do that it would lose pricing power. Now it has desktop computers that range in price from $799 (monitor and G4 chip included) on up. It has laptop computers that range in price from $999 up. I would suggest that this is adequate. Would I like to see the eMac for $699--frankly, yes, but it is not going to happen yet.
One of the big problems for corporate proftis in today's environment is that they do not have much in the way of pricing power. Apple should not give away what it has, particularly given the fact that its net profit margins have, I have read, been not much more than the money earned on that 4.x billion dollars in cash and cash equivalents that it has.
Ron
Matt Last time something like that happened (the clones), it almost put Apple out of business. They now have 4 billion in the bank. I like this way better. That does not mean I don't think Apple can or should never put out a version of its Unix OS for other platforms, it just means now is not the time.
Ron
Fi you wrote about your dissertating daughter:
but a wholesale change of OS AND word processor (not to mention an upgrade of her EndNote app) in the middle of a dissertation is not very appealing.
It would have made me absolutely suicidal, and it would not have taken much :). Finished mine up in WordPerfect 3.5, a whale of a program for academic writing. Wish Apple would take over the Mac version and bring it to OS X without many changes--particularly without changing the ability to see codes and change them.
Those were the good old days.
Ron
dilleet
iChat is strictly amateur hour. Not so much the technology, as the community members between .mac & AOL.
So, as far as you know, the technology is okey dokey and at par with what you are using, but the user universe of ichat is too small for your liking. Is that what you are saying?
Ron
Jim, ya doesn't have to be so.....wordy :). eom.
dilleet is there any reason why the iSight
camera would not work with any video chat program?

Woody and his children
Pinza, you have struck a nerve. I discovered Woody in the 70's through the back door of Bob Dylan. Have seen Arlo in concert multiple times. Stopped and spent a day in Okemah, OK, where Woody spent some of his growing up years, on a trip across the country in 1973.
Great stuff-I particularly like the verse of This Land is My Land, the one that is never sung
As I was walking across this land
I say a sign, it said no trespassing
the other side it didn't say nothing
that side was made for you and me
ok, it could be a rural legend, but there it is :).

Apple link, read it earlier this morning
Discounted some of it as standard view of Apple, a view I don't share fully.
I think Apple will continue to build a compelling case for its products. The case will be built for consumer and for business on the basis of features and functionality and, for the first time in a few years, speed--not to mention some neat new products.
I think later this summer could be a time to load up the Apple wagon. In the short term, a upgrade cycle for Pro users, one that will bring some amount of bang for the next year and a half, Panther, continued conversion of 'nixies and the possibility of WinMusicStore will keep the lights on.
I use a Windows box at work all day, and the iMac at home. Both work fine, but there is no doubt about which one I prefer to use.
Ron
The lust factor here is low
but the 17" iMac does all I need it to do and its been ages since Kathy has done any free-lance graphics work. Seem like the move, the increased salary, the lower need for the cash, the lack of ready-made customers combined with the desire to play in the dirt...errr take care of extensive flower beds has removed almost all desire to sit in front a computer at home when she sits in front of one at work more than she wants to.
The party line here is: "Whatever makes you happy darling"
OTOH, the lust factor for an iPod has increased, and I would like an iSight camera.
Ron
Apple climbing in pre-market. I see the exit sign lit at the door.

Ron
Annie,
I don't need one either *laugh*
The thing that makes iChat cool
Is that it will *just work( for many of us who would not have bought a thrid party solution. Apple will make some money from it, though not much. But, it may sell on or two Mac boxes.
Ron
A question, how many of you
would, given the available resources, order a G5 now? How many would do so because they had a professional/work need for it? How many would do so without a *real* need for it?
cotton, iChat
maybe you get get some sessions in with LK. why you have not ignored that person is beyond my understanding :).
Cotton, making money
I am thnking of buying a bear fund around the first of the month.
Think I'll make any money this month if I do so :). My sales on Thursday and Friday paid off--calvf down double digits today, WHT down about 4.5% since I sold it. PAAS is down since I sold it.
Thought of selling American Century Global Gold, but decided to hang on to it, given the volatility of that market. Looks like the move of all but small/midcap money in 401k may have been a good move. Frankly, I'd be satisfied with the 15% gain I have this year even if it meant little sit in a money market fund for most of the rest of the year. That exceeds the expectations I had for the whole year anyway.
Still holding some WHT, CDE, BGEIX and as a speculative play IIJI. Have more cash than I have for a long time. If HUI, the gold bugs index, drops to 140 or so and bounces off--if the dollar's bounce is reversed, I'll add some metals. Will watch Apple with an eye toward selling it on any end of quarter pop in the market late this week / early next week.
Interested in how Fed action affects the dollar.
