Sarah Palin throws Ted Stevens under the bus
http://voices.kansascity.com/node/2564
Give Sarah Palin credit: She stung fellow Republican and Alaskan Sen. Ted Stevens on Monday after he was found guilty of lying on financial disclosure forms. Palin basically said Stevens was guilty as charged.
"The verdict shines a light on the corrupting influence of the big oil service company up there in Alaska that was allowed to control too much of our state," Palin said.
"And that control was part of the culture of corruption that I was elected to fight, and that fight must always move forward regardless of party affiliation or seniority or even past service."
The strong words, of course, helped Palin re-establish her credentials as a fighter of corruption in Alaska. Still, the development Monday is not likely to change the basic fact that most Americans don't think Palin is qualified to become vice president.
The federal jury found Stevens guilty on seven counts of lying -- mostly for not listing gifts and home renovations on financial disclosure forms.
Most gifts came from Bill Allen, former chief executive of an oilfield services company called Veco.
Palin knows Veco well, because she has spoken out against corruption in the Alaskan oil industry.
Stevens, who's represented Alaska for 40 years, is fighting to keep his job in the Senate. That job just got a lot harder on Monday, thanks to the jury's verdict and Palin's stinging words.
For the past two months, a major news service has been engaged in a legal battle with the United States Navy over records that show that John McCain once was involved in an automobile accident that injured or, perhaps, killed another individual. Vanity Fair magazine and the National Security News Service claim to have knowledge "developed from first-hand sources" of a car crash that involved then-Lt. McCain at the main gate of a Virginia naval base in 1964, according to legal filings. The incident has been largely, if not entirely, kept from the public. And in documents suing the Navy to release pertinent information, lawyers for the NS News Service allege that a cover-up may be at play. "Plaintiffs have also obtained documents showing that law enforcement officers were ordered back to the accident scene to retrieve personal physical effects. The Navy has never publicly acknowledged this information," one document reads. "This request involves federal government activity, as it addresses what may be an attempt by the Navy to protect by concealment the involvement of a former Navy officer, sitting Senator and Presidential candidate in a serious incident involving the injury or death of another human being."

another mccain - palin coverup? nice
and he allowed the GOP to select Palin as his running mate - that was one bad choice imo.
mccain should have been a real maverick and chosen his own running mate.
he let the GOP run the show and not palin is trying to sink mccain before our eyes.

Medical Debt Sending Many Over Financial Brink
By Amanda Gardner
TUESDAY, Oct. 28 (HealthDay News) --
Since 1999, Keith and Deborah Krinsky of Magalia, Calif., have seen their health insurance deductible soar from $1,000 to $10,000.
And their health-care costs have put them in a financial hole.
A combination of Keith's chronic asthma and potential heart problems, Deborah's connective tissue disorder and fallen arches, and their kids' various scrapes and stumbles led them to amass a pile of credit card debt and forced them to refinance the mortgage on their house -- which they now are having trouble paying.
Keith, once a plant manager for a trucking company in Chico, took a $30,000 pay cut to get a job with better health benefits. Deborah, who doesn't work because of her disability, said they are still fighting desperately to stave off foreclosure.
"Right now, we are in the process of losing our home. We will probably go to my mother-in-law," Deborah said Monday.
The Krinskys are not alone in their scramble to make ends meet because of medical issues.
The connection between medical debt and the current credit crisis isn't a direct line, but it's strong enough to prompt Mike Leavitt, head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to declare at a recent news conference, "If we had any idea how many mortgages were foreclosed because people were crowded out by medical issues . . . Health-care costs are at the heart of many of the things happening."
A Kaiser Family Foundation poll conducted in April, way ahead of the current economic meltdown, found that 28 percent of Americans reported that they or their families had had a serious problem paying health insurance or medical bills because of changes in the economy.
And data from the Commonwealth Fund puts 41 percent of working-age adults -- 72 million people -- as having medical debt or having a problem paying medical bills, up from 34 percent -- or 58 million people -- in 2005.
Many families find themselves managing until a crisis sends them over the edge. "The way people get in trouble is have substantial debt they're managing, they're paying mortgages and paying off credit card balances, but they're managing. Then a shock occurs," said Dr. Steffie Woolhandler, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and co-author of a medical bankruptcy paper from the Consumer Bankruptcy Project. "In bankruptcy, in about half of those cases, that shock is a medical shock."
"The shock often takes the form of higher bills. It can also take the form of higher bills and loss of work because you're sick," added Woolhandler, who is an advocate of national health insurance.
This is what happened to Donna Smith and her husband, Larry.
The Smiths, who raised six children together, consistently had employer-sponsored health insurance. Like the Krinskys, however, they began to notice a drift upwards in the cost of premiums as well as higher co-pays and higher deductibles in the 1990s.
"While we were both well, we could absorb that creep," said Donna, formerly a newspaper editor and now a community organizer for the California Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee in Chicago.
But then the medical crises set in: Larry was diagnosed with serious artery disease, Donna with uterine cancer.
"Our debt was accelerating, but it wasn't just accelerating in medical debt," Donna said. "What you do is you hang on, you borrow from another place and pay the doctor. It's a balancing act all the time." The Smiths took payday loans, Donna pawned her engagement ring, and they even crawled to relatives.
"I can't tell you how humiliating it is," Donna said. "By the time you've gone through that kind of trauma, you've tapped out the good will of family and friends. You call them, and their tone of voice changes. You've damaged personal relationships. People are less excited about seeing you."
By 2004, their health insurance policy had a maximum out-of-pocket exposure of $9,000, and they were sued by a dermatologist for an unpaid bill. The amount? A mere $600.
Donna's wages were garnished, and the couple were forced to declared bankruptcy and sold their house for pennies on the dollar, all while they were technically fully insured.
The couple first moved in with a daughter living in Colorado and are now renting in Chicago.
"I don't know if we have enough working years left to buy a house," Donna said. "That's pretty heavy punishment for having gotten sick."
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE MCCAIN WILL GIVE YOU 5 GRAND - YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BUY A FULL YEAR OF COVERAGE BUT WHO REALLY NEEDS HEALTH CARE RIGHT???

McCain Calls on Sen. Stevens to Resign, Palin Does Not
Susan Davis reports on the presidential race.
The Republican presidential ticket appears to be of two minds on whether or not convicted Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens should resign from the Senate. John McCain called on the longest serving Republican senator to step down today in a statement.
“It is clear that Senator Stevens has broken his trust with the people and that he should now step down. I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will be spurred by these events to redouble their efforts to end this kind of corruption once and for all,” McCain said.
His running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, has not called on her home state colleague to resign. While the statement released by the campaign today had the McCain-Palin logo on it, it was a statement only from the Arizona senator. CNN reported Monday that Palin called the conviction a “sad day” for Alaska and said she was confident that Stevens “from this point on will do the right thing for the people of Alaska.” She did not respond when asked if she would vote for Stevens on Nov. 4.
Stevens vowed his innocence Monday and said he would continue his re-election fight against Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich.
we are dropping that is for sure. the big boards look more like the pinksheets now+
Seven Counts of Guilty for Stevens; Palin Still Doesn't Take a Position
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/10/seven-counts-of.html
PALIN ON STEVENS
Palin: I have great respect for the senator…. His voice, his experience, his passion needs to be heard across America. So that Alaska can contribute more. So that we can be producers. So that we can help lead the rest of the U.S. I, again, have great respect for him. There’s a big difference between reality and perception regarding our relationship.
So here’s my question: If Sarah Palin was such an all-American maverick, what was she doing palling around with a suspected felon like Ted Stevens?
palling around with felons eh sarah???

US considering talks with Taliban: report
WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States is considering taking part in talks with elements of the Taliban in a sharp change in tactics in Afghanistan, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday citing unnamed officials.
"Senior White House and military officials believe that engaging some levels of the Taliban -- while excluding top leaders -- could help reverse a pronounced downward spiral in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan," the paper said on its website.
The report said the new approach was contained in a draft recommendation in a classified White House assessment of US strategy in Afghanistan. Talks would be led by the Afghan government, "but with the active participation of the US," it said.
The final White House recommendation is expected next month after the US presidential elections, the report said.
Earlier this month, Afghan officials met with former members of the Taliban government in talks in Saudi Arabia.
The Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan has grown steadily despite the presence of tens of thousands of international troops helping the Afghan security forces. There is consensus that the violence will not be ended solely through military means.
The Taliban ruled from 1996-2001 using a restrictive and extremist interpretation of Islam before being overthrown by US-led forces.
On October 8, General David Petraeus, incoming head of the US Central Command, said that attempts were being made to open talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Petraeus used a similar approach in Iraq, where a US drive to enlist Sunni tribes in the fight against Al-Qaeda in Iraq helped sharply reduce the country's violence.
