Hi tdium. It's been awhile since I've said it here (see post #2882 in September) http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=4100303
I am just a subscriber like most of the people who post on this forum.
Are there any serious problems at StockCharts that should be shared with members of this forum?
Who ever knows that for sure about any company.
StockCharts.com addressed today's problem on their site.
Now they have posted as follows-
09-February: 5:05PM EST - SITE PROBLEM UPDATE Everything is back online at this point. We'll be watching things closely throughout the evening and tomorrow morning prior to the open. Unfortunately, we cannot be 100% sure that the problem is corrected until the market reopens and we start getting live data again.
As aggravating and frustrating as it is when something like this occurs, technical problems are a fact of life for any business.
Overall, I'm really quite happy with the product that StockCharts.com has produced. The ease of use, the education material, John Murphy's messages, the ability to save groups of favorites and run scans; all of that stuff is great.
Like everybody else (them, too, I imagine) I wish the site was never down. It's a real pain when it is. But I don't sell my car every time GM has a recall, and I won't be changing charting services over this, either.
I've been a full-time, independent trader going on seven years now. Almost all of my trading is T/A based, and a great deal of what I know I learned through the StockCharts site and John Murphy's books.
Basketball is coming on a few minutes so I'll end this book I've been writing here.
Lets hope everything is fine tomorrow.
Good trading,
Cush
This on the site now -
09-February: 2:36PM EST - SITE PROBLEM UPDATE We are running in a limited mode right now to try and keep the charting working through the market close. Scans, user-defined PerfCharts, and SharpCharts2 Beta 5 are all off-line right now.
I see the following message posted on the StockCharts.com site.
We are experiencing problems right now...
We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience that this outage is causing. Rest assured that we are working as hard as we can on fixing the problem as quickly as possible. Check back here for updates every 20 minutes or so. When the site returns, be sure to check the "Site News" section of the "Members" page for more information.
Status:
February 9th @ 11:34AM - UPDATE: We are unable to retrieve data from our data feed effectively this morning. The problem started right as the market opened. We are continuing to investigate and work with our data vendor to track down the problem. The site may be up and down throughout the day.

Site seems fine, now. eom Cush
Hi sonk. I just ran a scan. Everything worked as usual - really fast results - like one second.
When did your problem start? Is this happening with Standard Engine scans and AUI scans?
I had trouble with a number of sites (not StockCharts.com) when I added several spyware blocking programs to my system. Have you added anything like that lately?
Cush
Nebt. Everything seems to be working as usual at StockCharts.com for me.
If you're still having a problem, post again with some more details. Did this just start, etc.
Cush
Hi Bull. Could be that one of the other StockCharts.com subscribers has already asked Support that question and will see your post and answer it here, but if not you'll have to go directly to the source and ask StockCharts.com Support.

Cush
BULLarkey. No, I can't.
Cush
GR, that's great. I think that's the best way, by far, to learn how to create scans.
Cush
Hi GR. I don't use the Aroon and so I haven't ever tried to create a scan for it.
Note, I say create rather than write because I find it much easier to work with the Standard Scan engine unless I am trying to write a scan that requires the Advanced User Interface.
Using the Standard Scan Engine, I would start by working through the criteria you want, one by one.
Under Additional Technical Expressions, it's relatively easy to select Aroon Up (set the default to 9 instead of 25) (set the date to 1 day ago) then select the X, then select Aroon Down (set the default to 9 instead of 25) (set the date to 1 day ago).
Above the 70?
Do you mean the Aroon Osc above the 70 or the cross above the 70, or something else?
When you try running this portion of your scan limit the group you are scanning by selecting some fairly high average volume. Otherwise you'll find too many stocks with just the Aroon criteria.
See how that goes and then I'll give you some suggestions for how to set the volume and price criteria, if you need them.
Let me know if you don't know what I mean.
Good luck.

Hi anejames. I ran a scan using the Standard Scan Engine. It opened a new window and showed 0 results in that window. The window stayed open until I closed it.
I ran a scan using the Your Favorite Scans from the Member's page, and it did not open a new window. The page changed to one showing scan results - 0.
Cush
anejames, I haven't noticed that. But I have noticed that when I annotate now and click on the upload button, the window automatically closes. This is saving me a step. Up until now, I've gotten the blue screen with the Close button in the lower left corner. I don't know if this is permanent, or even if it's something StockCharts.com initiated, or something that my own system is doing, but I'm happy with the change.
I'll try running some scans later to see if a zero results scan causes me to automatically return to the User Defined Scans screen.
Cush
Hi Smooth. I hate Java problems.
You said - I get the annotate screen box with the small puzzle
This sounds like Microsoft's alternative to Java. That's what I use because I don't like the way Java works on my machine. I don't think the recent releases of Java work all that well with Windows 98, and that's what I'm using, too.
So, do you get the Java steaming coffee cup logo when you try to annotate, or the Microsoft puzzle?
If Java is open on your system you should have the little steaming coffee cup down beside the time (bottom left of your screen).
Cush
Smooth. Is this a problem that developed?
Have you been able to annotate in the past?
Are you a new subscriber?
Just what happens when you click annotate? Anything?
That's a good list of things you've tried.
I'll try to think of something else to suggest overnight.
Cush
Able. If you send in a request, using the Support page on the StockCharts.com site, the ticker you are looking for will usually be added.

Hi Shawn. It doesn't appear you're going to get an answer here on the forum. It hasn't come up here before.
You probably should direct your question directly to Support.

Perhaps you could post the answer back here for the rest of us.

Hi BA. Do both computers have exactly the same configuration of software, etc.?
For example, do both computers have Norton on them?
Cush
Well, BA, you've got me stumped.
Did you say that you can access StockCharts.com from a different computer? And if so, does the same thing happen from both computers?
Cush
Been Around. From your last post-
I then started to eliminate indicators one at a time. I updated the chart and then tried to annotate each time. On all 3, I was able to annotate in the chart view at some point during the elimination process. It always took more then one indicator but did not seem to be indicator specific.
When I reopend the original,I again could not annotate. If I eliminated the crucial indicators, I then could again annotate.
This may be way out in left field, but are these charts that you've been annotating for long enough to have had some of the annotations slip off the left side of the chart?
That certainly happens with some of my heavily annotated charts. Especially those with short time frames that I don't look at every week.
Once the limit of annotations per chart is reached, even if they have slipped off the left side, further annotations cannot be added. The only way to work around that is to do what you did, remove some of the visible ones, or use the "delete all" button at the top of the annotation page.
This may have nothing to do with the problem.
I should be back online tomorrow.
Cush
Been Around. I am reluctant to suggest anything regarding Java, but here goes.
If you are using Sun's version of Java, (I am not) then there is a separate cache for Java programs that might be causing problems.
In Windows, to clear that Java cache:
1.) Find the Java coffee cup icon near the time display (lower right corner of the screen).
2.) Right click on that icon and select "Open Control Panel"
3.) Select the "Cache" tab
4.) Press the "Clear" button
5.) (Optional, but recommended) Uncheck the "Enable Caching" checkbox, then click "Apply"
6.) Close the Control Panel window
7.) Clear your Internet browser cache
8.) Reboot
Cush
Leon, which specific "Spy Bloc program" had you installed and now removed.
Cush
Spy Bloc program Ya, that sounds like another good possibility.
I'm not having the problem you fellows have been experiencing with StockCharts.com, but I have had a series of problems with other sites since I was forced to install a bunch of spy blocking software.
For example, I use the Canadian S.E.D.I. site to access info on Insider Trading. It's an important trading tool to me.
http://www.sedi.ca/
I can no longer go anywhere beyond the opening page. When I click on either the English or French options, I go to the infamous "this page cannot be displayed" screen. Pretty frustrating. I haven't had the time yet to disable all the blocking software I added, to see if that works.
Cush
Hi BA. Don't give up on me.
As I said in a previous post, intermittent problems are always hard to diagnose. That's the case whether you're dealing with computer software, hardware, cars, whatever.
Like the rest of you here, I am a StockCharts.com subscriber. This forum is an ideal place to discuss and try to figure out a problem like you're having. For me, that's the purpose of the forum.
One of the first things the forum does is help identify where the problem is. So, for example, if the StockCharts.com site goes down, we can come to this forum and we know it's not just us experiencing the problem.
Second thing the forum is useful for is problems like this.
If someone has already had the problem and solved it, someone here might know about it.
Or, as in this case, you find out you're not alone, but the problem doesn't seem to be universal.
You have already tried the two things that occur to me, Memory (cache cleaning) and Java. I don't have anything else to suggest right now, but I'll keep thinking about it.
Since now there are two or maybe three of you with the same or similar problems maybe if each of you describe the problem you are having (with lots of specifics, time, chart type, annotating from which view, etc. etc.) and describe your systems (manufacturer, speed, memory, browsers, programs open or active when the problem occurs, isp type, general location, and anything else you can think of) maybe we'll notice something else you share in common, besides this problem.
Or maybe we'll discover that you've got three unrelated but similar problems.
An intermittent problem in a car, described over the internet, would be really hard to diagnose and fix, and that would be dealing with something concrete. This is probably going to be a lot harder to nail down.
Cush
Hi Been Around. I did noticed that the Java icon did not want to appear annotating chart(1). It did with chart (2) and didn't help with (3) or the retry of (1).
Well, if it isn't a memory problem (and it may still be - just one we haven't figured out) then Java does seem like the next possible problem area.
I am very hesitant to suggest any solution to a Java problem.
I run both Netscape and Internet Explorer, as well as some proprietary stock data software, and I have experienced troubles when updating the Java program. So, I would try to find a problem/solution elsewhere before I'd do that.
Next time you have the problem, you might try immediately clearing your cache, and then immediately retry annotating to see if that fixes the problem. That may or may not point to the problem of course, because intermittent problems are notoriously hard to diagnose.
I can't remember if you've already said this - what size is the memory in your computer?
Cush
Hi Been Around. I would find that pretty frustrating.
It sounds like it could be a memory problem, but I am far from an expert on these things.
Do you regularly clear the browser's cache?
Any other memory hogs running on your system?
Are you doing much large copying and pasting?
Cush
traderg, charts are loading as usual.
Yesterday there was a problem that lasted for about ten minutes.
Cush
Hi GR. Same problem for me. Charts are not loading.
Cush
Hi Jim77. Are you trying to do that scan in the Standard Scan Engine or the Advanced User Interface?
If the AUI, then perhaps you could copy and paste the text of the scan here.
Between the MACD clauses, you need to use "or" which can only be done using the AUI.
Cush
Thanks trading fool. Some of the security I have added to my system must be blocking it. I'll have to fix something at my end.
Cush
Hi guys. If anyone happens to be around today -
I can't go beyond the initial page on the SEDI site.
http://www.sedi.ca/
Would you go to the site and click on the English or French link and let me know if the site opens for you.
Thanks.
Cush
miklos, the next time I update that Scan Library, I will include this SAR scan you've suggested.
It looks simple enough to create in the Standard Scan Engine. Is that what you are using?
Cush
Fargofern. This sort of issue (symbol change) should be sent directly to Support at StockCharts.com

Hi guys. I haven't been running a lot of charts these past few days, but when I have, everything's been working as usual for me - with StockCharts, at least.
Yesterday, I had a problem with a couple of other sites loading very slowly. I shut my browsers and ran my programs looking for viruses and spyware. Didn't find anything substantial. When I re-opened everything seemed fine.
Same thing this morning, with a site directly at my ISP. Closed up everything, again. When I cleaned the cache and re-opened, everything working ok. It's a mystery.
Cush
Hi sfbala. That version of Internet Explorer should be fine.
If I think of anything else to suggest, I'll post you another note.
Cush
Hi sfbala. Quite a puzzle.
You can identify the browser version by clicking Help in the top menu on your screen, and then "About Internet Explorer".
Are you able to annotate charts?
Cush
Hi Garden Rose. It's been a while since I've been working with anything less than Daily charts.
If there is a way to display, only a prior day's minute chart, I don't know how. If I ever knew, I've forgotten.
As for a close look at yesterday's indicators, perhaps expanding to a SuperWide view (if you haven't already) would help.
Cush
Hi sfbala. Does the pop-up say Add/Modify Chart at the top?
What browser are you using?
What version?
Cush
Hi sfbala. Here's the info from that previous post with some added info in bold print.
Changing the time frame on charts in a Favorites List.
Under SharpCharts view, do as you describe and click "update chart".
That is the first step.
Then, at the top of the page, open the choose from: menu that says "-Your Favorite Charts-".
In that menu (2nd from the bottom) you will find "Add/Modify the current chart".
Click on the "Add/Modify the current chart". Let me know if that doesn't produce the pop-up referred to in the next step.
That will give you a pop-up with "Chart Name" and "Favorite List" to confirm. If those are correct, click "OK".
That change should now show in your Favorites List.
Cush
Hi sfbala. Followed your advice to "Chart Name"and "Favorite List" to confirm--here I was unable to find "OK" to click on.
If you got to a small pop-up window, with some resolution settings the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons don't show.
The window can be expanded, either by clicking on the top, or by dragging a corner with your mouse.
Are you getting a pop-up window?
Cush

And here's some more info.
You can change every chart in that Favorites List if you now click on the option at the bottom of the page that reads -
"Use the current style on My Favorites in ...."
Caution. Caution. Caution. Make sure you want to change every chart in the list to all the settings on this chart before you use this option.
