SEED more on rev recognition:
from a Feb.2007 webcast
"the company takes a 10% to 30% deposit on the seeds prior to the finish of the production of the seed. That then goes into the benefits from customers on the balance sheet. Then, once the entire order is placed by the distributor, who is a customer to Origin, the remainder of the 70% to 90% of that sum is collected and then booked at cash as advance from customer on the balance sheet. Once the product is shipped as we see it with very little incidence of return, it is then booked as a deferred revenue. And after the entire contract is fulfilled and the final type is set, then it becomes full-fledged revenue."
http://seekingalpha.com/article/27584-origin-agritech-roth-capital-conference-presentation-transcript?page=8
SEED lumpy rev recognition
Origin Agritech Limited Reports Second Quarter Fiscal 2008 Results
During the second quarter of fiscal 2008, the Company generated revenues of RMB 1.56 million (US$0.22 million), increasing 50.54% from revenue of RMB 1.04 million (US$0.13 million) for the three months ended March 31, 2007.
Deferred revenue more than doubled to RMB 400.15 million (US$57.07 million) at March 31, 2008 from RMB 112.05 million (US$15.36 million) at December 31, 2007. This deferred revenue reflects the value of Origin’s crop seeds after evidence of a sales arrangement is confirmed, delivery to the customer is made, and full pre-payment from the customer is received, but before the final sales price is fixed and determined. The final sales price is primarily determined by sales volume incentives that Origin gives to its customers. It is expected that majority of this deferred revenue will be recorded on the income statement in the fiscal 2008 third quarter ending June 30, 2008.
http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080602006576&newsLang=en
"Due to the seasonality of the seed industry, our revenue is mainly recognized during the several months up to and including September of each year. Thus, our performance each year is most accurately determined after the end of our seasonal year, which now tracks our year-end of September 30th of each year."
Deferred revenue
Because of our revenue recognition policy, we sometimes carry sizeable deferred revenue on our balance sheet. This deferred revenue reflects the value of our canola seeds delivered after evidence of a sales arrangement is confirmed, delivery to the customer is made and full pre-payment from the customer is received, but before the final sales price is fixed and determined. This aspect of our revenue recognition policy does not have a significant effect when deferred revenues in the periods being compared maintain roughly the same proportion to overall sales. However, when the proportion of our sales classified as deferred revenue varies significantly from year to year, as sometimes occurs, our revenues and earnings as reported in our financial statements may not exactly reflect our operating activities.

Fiscal 2008 Guidance
Based on its current outlook, and existing and anticipated business conditions, Origin reiterates the revenue guidance for FY 2008 in the range of US$75 million to US$80 million and net income range of US$0.5 million to US$2 million, for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2008. This net income figure is inclusive of roughly US$2.7 million dollars in expected non-cash interest expense from our convertible debt offering. Exclusive of this non-cash expense, we expect a net income range of US$3.0 to US$4.5 million.

their customer, NewSight, still without the financing to pay off the note due. the note was extended again, probably, because the grocery chain in the Chicago area, Meijers, would be a nice plum to have under mgmt. with full rollout and they still have over 80 stores that haven't had digital signage installed yet
CFO John Witham left. this happened after last weeks annual meeting which is a bit surprising. don't know any further details. Witham had a long history with Jeff Mack at Olympic, then renamed Arcadia Financial.

It comes down to a matter of faith... If you believe the KFC and Yum Brands contract is just a matter of time, hopefully a short time, then the 30% haircut from the $7+ area to below $5 was a great opportunity.
If they choke on their expenses in endless anticipation, there will be more pain in the price.

key cpst analyst from lazard out with positive comments
mcmike: Sanjay Shrestha at Lazard Capital is out with a key call this morning that shows the company's huge backlog was not only stellar. That backlog may actually be understated as far as the analyst is concerned.
"The company posted stellar backlog of $27.9 million (428 units), reflecting a 113% increase sequentially and 458% year/year. The reported backlog number does not include the services and components backlog, which adds about $10 million.... We are raising our FY09 revenue estimates again, to $58 million from $50 million, reflecting the current backlog trend."
We noted that last night's reported backlog is actually more than all of 2007 revenues combined, but this new data may actually make that prior huge number seem tiny. So far we have seen more than 224,000 shares trade hands in pre-market trading with just over an hour to go before the market opens. Shares closed at $3.41 last night and the last trade seen was at $3.69.

only negative i heard was the care they are taking re. deployments of cash which is not at a level where they can do a pedal to the metal ramp of more personnel, more shifts, or production in anticipation of orders
the OfficePower announcement is, imo, BIG. leads the way for more NYC installations from other providers which is what i have been waiting for some 2+ years.

Pinch Play entry signals
for those who don't care to catch the exact bottom....
i created a series of watchlists for pinch plays using telechart over a 6 week period
the "winners" were culled and various indicators studied for reliable correlations
imo, having the share price cross the EMA8 was generally a positive entry.
slope changes in ppo or adx were less sensitive or outright erroneous
rsi9 moves above 30 was late (i find rsi2 much too whippy for my taste)
the relative slopes of the ppo and adx (more extreme the better) before the pinch sets up for better reversal bounces
in some cases the pinch took many sessions to produce a winning entry point e.g. USNA or EPIC
in these cases identifying resistance and setting an alert for the resistance break would have been profitable
candle analysis or your favorite sell indicator works when you want to take profit; e.g. OMG & WNR had a stochastic rollovers

i have the impression that they want to give NewSight as long a leash as possible because the Meijer's grocery chain still has over 80 stores to roll out in, and that is a nice number of screens (averaging 5? per store) to have under a recurring revenue contract.

RCH short interest
how much comfort do institutional short interests take when a specialist on a listed exchange helps move prices down when they are net short from buyside activity?
when a stock moves to the Naz does their comfort level cause more conservative action (i.e. short covering) because there is no longer a specialist to help control the price?
gapper pick: CAEI only 20' left of RCH
once the professional shorts lose their ally in the AMEX mkt maker they will be less brazen in holding their short positions
that, coupled with the bell ringing later this week should help it work higher.
