The world needs to be prepared for "unpredictable pandemics" from viruses making the leap from animals to people, scientists in Taiwan say.
Their warning follows the first reported case of a common bird flu, H6N1, being detected in a woman, earlier this year.
The patient recovered and no other cases have been detected.
But the Lancet Respiratory Medicine report said "intensive" monitoring of bird flu was needed.
In May 2013, the first human case of an H6N1 bird flu was detected in a woman in Taiwan. One of her neighbours bred ducks, geese and chickens - although the precise source of the infection has not been detected.
Many sub-types of influenza, such as those that cause seasonal flu or the swine flu pandemic, are known to infect people, but H6N1 is not one of them.
The report, by the Centres for Disease Control in Taiwan, said: "The occurrence of a human case of H6N1 infection shows the unpredictability of influenza viruses.
"Our report highlights the need for influenza pandemic preparedness , including intensive surveillance for ever evolving avian influenza viruses."
Prof Wendy Barclay, from Imperial College London, said these infections may have happened in the past but improved technology had meant this one had been discovered.
She said: " Is this a truly new thing or are we now just better at seeing it?"
She told the BBC she expected far more of these cases to be reported in the next few years as more hospitals were geared up to look for novel bird flus.
Prof Barclay added: "This is a single case with no evidence of human transmission, but as always we should keep an eye on it and do studies to see how close it is to being able to spread between humans."

Forzo, ciao, add us in @ sdboze@gforcecable.com
I agree that NNVC doesn't get any respect from sticky-fingered investors. We've become the Rodney Dangerfield of Bio start-ups.
But, it's outside the US that Dengue is the biggest threat, including protectorates of EU countries. Their approval of Dengue would have huge ramifications.
Apparently, the winning of Orphan Drug Status for Denguecide by NNVC in Europe isn't worth a tinker's damn, judging by the stock market's reaction..
Apparently the New York investors are too blase to appreciate Doc Seymour's earth shattering presentation. It seems nothing will tempt them beyond positive human trial results.
In most industrialized countries births are below the replacement rate. Japan and Italy are stark examples. This introduces the problem of supporting an aging population. Maybe we need more Eskimo ice floes.
Good for you, Weedie. We have two animal facilities where I live. One is no-kill and I and my friends support it. NNVC - saving lives - both man and beast.
Thanks for the post nano.
Fat Finger Syndrome.
I agree. In this age of BIG BROTHER and 1984, the government already knows more about me than I like.

I agree. The information is old and inaccurate. Just a penny stock pumper with no DD.
Still does. Just asking.
Okay!! Someone, anyone, what the heck is going on with NNVC stock?
Does anyone know when Ihub will populate the NNVC stock data tables and charts? They've been blank since the split.
Sorry for your sister's dire prognosis. Best to you and the family. Hawaii can wait.
No! Because hope springs eternal in the NNVC optimist's breast. BK is just being his conservative self. Fill the glass.
I don't think so. I believe it was a local contractor who did some of the preliminary site work.
I believe Diwan said that the contractor for the new facility was taking part of his fee in stock.
I went for my annual flu vaccination this am. Afterwards, I remarked to the nurse that I thought flu vaccinations would be a thing of the past in 2 or 3 years. I explained that a new nanoviricide is being developed that could eliminate the flu virus. Her comment was, "that would be wonderful, but do you think the big pharmaceutical companies will allow it." Obviously, we are not the only ones contemplating such a push back. What are the chances NNVC can be derailed by Big Pharma?
Perhaps NNVC's IHubbers can have their first annual reunion in Berkeley Square. It's a magical part of old London town. Weedie can exchange her Hula skirt for a Burberry.
Nano, how good is your Italian? Come on, give it a break.
Go Magnus 1!!!
Good article ZF, well stated and non-confrontational. Good on you.
Why the abrupt change in NNVC's SP.
Once NNVC and CASI complete the official tox tests, what is needed to file the IND. Then, what steps are necessary by FDA to grant the IND? When that is done, who selects the clinical test sites and test subjects? Who actually runs the tests and what verification is required by FDA to obtain their approval after each phase?
Because the licenses to NNVC, for which Diwan is president, were for viricides only. The discoveries may be applicable to any number of therapies, all of which may be added to NNVC's arsenal of licenses.
The "scam" that is Theracour, owns all the Diwan patents that have been licensed to Nanoviricids. Some useless organization that is.
The IR person is Seymour's daughter. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Fidelity.
But, Madoff didn't have dozens of reputable, independent scientists verifying his Ponzi scheme. Had as many knowledgeable economists and financial academics looked at Madoff's formulas, he would have been exposed long before he was.
The last time I looked that "solid advance" was down another 30 cents.More good news like the KARD tox tests and we'll be back below a dollar (old stock).
Aznzvour, do the French-Canadiens do the hula differently than West Virginians?
Let me try this. The small plane taxis out to the runway, destroys all the militants with their RPGs along the way, then takes off leaving a vapor trail for the 777 to follow.
Once again, long before you came on the board, fast track status and probability was discussed ad nauseum. You'll have to go back several thousand posts to find those discussions.
We've known these "facts" for over five years, long before you became the authority on all things NNVC. Your condescension is still off-putting and annoying.
The problem for most of the oldtimers on the board is that "right now" is ten years and waiting. As much as I hate to agree with some on this board, yesterday's announcement appears to be a sop thrown to the masses to satisfy Dr. Seymour's promise of "tox tests" by the end of September.
That close was obviously not what everyone was expecting after this morning's PR.
Norm Crosby, old Mr. Doublespeak. I remember him well. He made as much sense as the politicians in Washington are making.
