Greece and China have signed shipping, trade and energy deals worth $4bn during a three-day visit to Athens by Li Keqiang, the Chinese premier, who asserted that Greece should become his country’s “gateway to Europe”.
Antonis Samaras, the Greek prime minister, echoed Mr Li’s remarks on Friday as the two men inaugurated a 17km rail link from a Chinese-controlled container operation at Piraeus port to the main line connecting Greece with the Balkans and central Europe.

“Greece can become the main European entry point for China thanks to our strategic location and our strong shipping industry,” Mr Samaras said.

China to invest US$5 billion in Greece shipping industry
PREMIER Wen Jiabao has signed 13 deals after attending his talk with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou in his four-nation tour in Europe where Greece is the first stop, reported Xinhua.

The deals cover areas concerning maritime transport, lending facilities, telecommunications, exports and cultural exchanges.
Premier Wen said first China will set up a special fund with an initial part of US$5 billion on China-Greece shipping co-operation. Also, Cosco has decided to invest EUR4.3 billion (US$5.19 billion) in the modernisation Piraeus, the big Greek container port, to develop it into a major gateway for Chinese products and services to Europe.
Konstantinos Papadopoulos, general secretary of international economic relations and development co-operation in Greek foreign ministry, said that Greek and Chinese firms have invested $2.5 billion this year in ship building within an overall planned investment of $5.5 billion.
