In addition to maybe some good things coming in the future...I would think there would be some short covering going on before the 17th?
if that was the case I think the dividend would have been much higher. I unfortunately think it was from pressure from shareholders who are going to be irate when management soon gives themselves huge bonuses for a year in which they made no progress on significant liscenses and ended a cluster of a SA period. They did sell off a portion of the company to add to a pile of cash that they haven't done anything with as long as I can recall. I don't see how this relatively small dividend means the company is selling....I hope i'm wrong or that they at least reliscense LG and/or Sam.
I do think you are right that it is good news.
That is true, but at that time there was no expected big cash sale of patents and the management had suggested they had something to spend the cash on. It now seems that has changed and that management would just be sitting on cash for even longer. I think that is why sentiment changed.
Great post
I have to admit, I was dead wrong in my take on a dividend. I did not think they would do it. Nice to have a move that rewards management and shareholders in the same move.

I like the low volume climbs, it makes up for all of the times the stock has significantly dropped on low volume for seemingly no reason in the past.
I don't know that they should get bonuses if they give out a 1$ dividend. If they make a dividend aren't they rewarding themselves with that dividend money through their shares already?
so when they get their big bonuses with no significant liscenses and the big ones set to expire with no resolution....what can we do about it except cry on this msg board.
I would love to get a special dividend b4 year end, however, anyone who thinks we are...go back and listen (not read) the last cc where somebody asked management if they would be maybe giving one out and the way they answered it sounded like they scoffed at the thought of it. The transcript was that they look at all options of everything in board meetings, but to me it sounded like they snickered at the thought b4 they said that. I don't see it happening unless they are getting a ton of pressure and feel they must. MO
Are giant undeserved executive bonuses exciting to you? I have a feeling that is the only news we will be hearing about.
In the last conf call when one of the analysts brought this up it sounded like the board had to choke to not LOL at the suggestion of it.
OMG, that is probably the funniest things I have seen this week.
Maybe they called and asked...this isn't an IDCC press release from what I can tell.
The Language management used in the last teleconference by management seemed to say that they did NOT expect the other patent sale they had discussed in the past to happen this year. Nothing is certain, but I took that to be inferred in that call. I would not expect it this quarter.
This is once again the super rich wanting a different set of rules than the rest of us. If you were knowingly buy stolen property you would be held accountable...even if you didn't know it was stolen when you bought it and it was discovered you would lose out. I don't see what infringers are doing any different than the scenario above other than at a macro level and then trying to abuse the court system to delay justice.
Cisco Calls Patent Trolls Racketeers
Merrit already foreshadowed that not happening by EOY. It seems everytime he mentions that it's expected soon but might go beyond..it has gone beyond...by years.
It is my guess that Nok is going to use this to try to see if the courts are dumb enough (like IDCC management was) to think that what Apple is paying IDCC is a fair price for them. I think this is a step in that direction in this case. I could be wrong.
I thought right before the SA IDCC was ready to strike..it seems that blunder really killed momentum of the company organically growing and renewing some key liscensees. I would argue it was better then. The CAFC seemed like it would be helpful, but it seems obvious in the case of Nokia that the court system is aiding and embedding to let them never have to pay in a meaningful timeframe. It's quite shamefull.
I didn't hear the whole call...but I missed them saying anything about the 800million in (3-5) years. Does anyone know if they have already abandoned that or was it somewhere in there still?
He actually literally laughed out loud at the suggestion of giving the cash to shareholders when RS tried to get an answer out of him.
Investors can expect the board will be on top of the cash all right.
I expect earnings to be a non event. The street already knows about the patent sales so that isn't going to help from here. I don't expect any concrete news on new liscenses. I hope there is something however...that would be great.
I don't think 5.78 vs 6 will matter much in the whole scheme of things...maybe short term a dollar or 2. Management needs to execute on something or we are stuck imo.
I think that the stock market shares work like gold to the dollar..they just keep making more up and the shares themselves are just figures on books....options/shorting/etc have made shares less relevant. If they can make a buck selling or buying that something that doesn't exist and there are no regulations that are enforced to stop it..they will do it.
They (nok) seem to still have plenty of cash to spend on frivilous court cases/appeals.
You can't put out a headline like that unless it's true. Does anyone know if Iphone 5 is really going to benefit IDCC unless there is an announcement of a deal? If there was a deal in place for sure I would certainly agree.
I think it was a no brainer that they would file. If they had went this far what possible reason would they have to stop their obvious delay tactic. I don't see them stopping and settling until they get a ban threatened.
to suppress the stock price?
Based on the delay history it is difficult to not hate that there was a joint filing to move the date that far out.
Hopefully Nokia doesn't fool IDCC management again by telling them they will play nice and IDCC comes out with a thought of making significant progress only to let Nokia delay things for another year only to reneg again. Please don't be that naive again management!
I believe the original judge suggested a ban if the cafc overturned....could that speed things up? Does anyone have that verbage from the original case or recall if I am correct?
I don't know for sure, but it seems a safe bet to assume management screwed that up in the deal too. Don't worry though, they got their huge bonus for market share out of it.
At this point it makes me wonder if the CAFC is doing IDCC a solid by not making a technical ruling and instead letting their case with updated patents play out to see where that lands? I dont' even know anymore.
someone asked and they said they aren't going to comment on that.
If I heard right, it sounds like only 200 of the patents sold were US based.
There were quite a few analysts on the call..seemed like more than normal so maybe there is no conspiracy with the 6pm call?
They said they have been contacting the cafc to check on the case from time to time which is different than everyone has said or thought.
calm down, no big conference ever starts on the second. geesh
I certainly could see them pursuing sales, but I would hope they don't announce it as a process and stopping all communication. I can't imagine them trying that one again.
