Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer - Question:
With CFRP being stronger than steel (apparently up to 5x stronger) and weighing less than aluminum in relation to strength, it seems to have potential to take a substantial bite out of the aluminum msrket.
The advantage of aluminum is its lower cost. From what I've been reading so far, carbon fiber production cost has been coming down, but have not found any specific numbers yet.
Does anybody have info or links relating cost of CFRP vs sluminum..and..or..potential future cost reduction of CFRP?
Thank you.

McCain Proposes Strategic Energy Independence
Wednesday, Jun. 25, 2008
By AP/ GLEN JOHNSON
(LAS VEGAS) — Sen. John McCain says he would seek to break U.S. reliance on foreign oil by 2025 by stepping up offshore drilling, nuclear power and conservation.
Aides to the Republican presidential contender say his aim is strategic energy independence _ a U.S. economy where oil is no longer be the primary fuel or dependent on cartels such as OPEC.
McCain made his pledge Wednesday in a speech at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Nevada is shaping up as a potential swing state in the general election.
McCain faces local critics concerned his plan to build 45 new nuclear reactors will generate waste that has to be dumped at a controversial proposed repository at Nevada's Yucca Mountain.

As Gas Prices Top $4 Nationally, GE Helps Businesses Cut Fuel Costs, Prevent Carbon Emissions & Increase Productivity
GE Capital Solutions Fleet Services expects to save customers more than $145 million in fuel costs, avoid 270,00 metric tons of CO2 emissions by 2011
Last update: 10:53 a.m. EDT June 10, 2008
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Jun 10, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The United States passed a painful yet historic milestone this week as the national average price per gallon of regular gasoline surpassed $4 for the first time on Sunday, June 8. As rising fuel costs continue to put the breaks on the overall economy, some businesses are pushing ahead by reducing average fuel costs by 15 percent with savings up to $15,000 per vehicle.
They are taking advantage of a new, comprehensive program called Environmental Performance from GE Capital Solutions Fleet Services. Combining technology and analytical solutions, Environmental Performance, one of GE's first Ecomagination-certified services, includes telematics that baseline where and how each vehicle is performing. Ecomagination is a GE business strategy to help meet customers' demand for more energy-efficient products and to drive reliable growth for GE.
Metrics centrally captured for analysis include total distance driven, fuel use, drive time and CO2 emission by vehicle along with speed and time spent idling. Based on this real-time data, GE helps fleet managers re-sequence their existing routes and re-assign deliveries to different drivers. The resulting benefits from harnessing and then using the information to better manage a vehicle fleet are notable--double digit plus improvements in accidents rates, overtime costs, customer retention, workforce productivity, carbon emissions as well as fuel costs savings.
Customers Realize Immediate Benefits
One customer that's truly been delighted is Truly Nolen of America, one of the largest family owned pest control companies in the United States. Headquartered in Tucson, Arizona with 75 branch offices in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Utah, the company has deployed GE's solution in more than 400 of its service and sales vehicles to date, says Bob Hartley, vice president Technical Services at Truly Nolen.
"We realized benefits immediately as we saw that technicians were leaving vehicles idling to run air conditioning while on service calls. Having line of sight into that wasteful practice allowed us to stop it, saving us about $300 in fuel costs per vehicle per year while also lowering CO2 emissions," Hartley said.
"Additionally, GE's solution has helped us optimize our driving routes, prevent misuse of fuel cards, and reduce speeding. It's been great so far, and keeps getting better as more features are added," added Hartley. "That's why we're in the process of deploying this GE Fleet Services offering across our entire fleet of 900 vehicles."
Another company that's realizing big benefits is Boca Raton, Florida based Amtec, a national provider of outsourced solutions to the cable television, telecommunications and broadband services industries throughout North America. According to Gene Hollenbeck, Corporate Director of Assets, Risk & Safety for Amtec, they began using Fleet Services telematics offering in November 2007 on approximately 700 of their service vehicles.
"The big issues for us are controlling fuel costs, knowing where our service vehicles are and what they're doing. So far, telematics has been very good for us. "
Like Truly Nolen, reducing vehicle idling time was an area for immediate savings.
"We've seen tremendous reduction in minutes our vehicles are idling--upwards of 40% in fact. That's a big savings for us and also helps reduce our CO2 emissions," says Gene. "We've seen significant reductions in driver speeding offenses too, which hopefully reduces our risk exposure. Overall, our experience with telematics has been very, very positive," said Hollenbeck
Telematics is just one element of GE's Environmental Performance program. "We work with our business customers from the starting line, helping them select which vehicles are best for their business over the lifecycle of a lease. Selecting the right car or truck is one of those decisions that individual consumers spend a lot of time on. For a fleet manager who is responsible for procuring and operating dozens, if not hundreds or thousands of vehicles, that decision is all the more complicated with major business consequences. We make that process easy," said Bob Mitchell, President and CEO GE Capital Solutions, Fleet Services.
"GE understands what businesses are up against today dealing with crude oil, gasoline and diesel increases. We have a solution that's going to save our customers a lot of money and give them a great return on their investment-up to 15X ROI or $15,000 per vehicle per year. We can also help them help the environment and proactively get out in front of legislation aimed at stabilizing CO2 emissions. It is welcomed relief for business fleet operations that are under tremendous pressure," said Mitchell.
Good Start, Huge Opportunity
Fleet Services tested its telematics service with several dozen customers last year. Its goal is to deploy 40,000 units this year, which when reached will produce $26 million in fuel cost savings (based on $4 per gallon) and 48,000 metric tons of CO2 reduction for customers.
"That's just a start," added Mitchell, whose business has more than 1.6 million cars under lease and service management through operations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, "We conservatively expect to help our customers manage data from more than 220,000 telematics units by the close of 2011, saving them at least $145 million in fuel costs while preventing some 270,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions."
Mitchell noted the potential for even more significant impacts, citing the fact that there are approximately 12 million commercial vehicles on the road today in just the United States. With annual savings per vehicle up to $15,000 that can be achieved through GE's Environmental Performance solution, annual savings could reach $1.8 billion.

President & COO Kevin O'Hara to Step Down; Sunit Patel to Remain CFO
March 10, 2008: 08:00 AM EST
BROOMFIELD, Colo., March 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Level 3 Communications, Inc. announced today that Kevin O'Hara is stepping down as the company's president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. The company also announced that Sunit Patel, the company's current chief financial officer, will continue in the role of CFO. The company has terminated its previously disclosed search for a new CFO.
"Kevin O'Hara has worked closely with me for more than 20 years and this was obviously a difficult decision for both of us," said Jim Crowe, chief executive officer of Level 3. "Kevin is one of the founders of our company and has made enormous contributions to its success. I want to personally thank him for his professionalism and commitment to our company over the many years we've been together. At this time, however, Kevin and I have agreed that a different perspective will be of benefit to our company."
Neil Hobbs, currently executive vice president, sales and network services, has been appointed to the newly created position of executive vice president, operations. Mr. Hobbs and Mr. Crowe will be assuming Mr. O'Hara's responsibilities going forward. Mr. Crowe will assume the additional title of president.
"I have worked closely with Neil Hobbs for several years and particularly closely over the last few months as we have worked to address our service activation and service management challenges," said Mr. Crowe. "I have great confidence that Neil will continue to provide the leadership that has already shown significant positive results in the early part of this year.
"In October, we announced that we were beginning a search for a new CFO. At the same time, we began implementing internal organizational changes aimed at both retaining Sunit Patel and bolstering our financial operational capabilities. During the search process, it became clear that the company would be best served by Sunit remaining CFO. I am particularly pleased that our company will continue to benefit from Sunit's broadly recognized leadership and strategic financial thinking. He is a gifted, financial executive with a deep knowledge of and commitment to the company."
As part of the internal finance organization changes, the company appointed Neel Dev to the new position of senior vice president, finance with responsibility for financial planning, budgeting and analysis for operations and the company's customer facing market groups. Mr. Dev has years of experience in finance and operations, and in his new role will report to Mr. Patel.
"Over the last several months, we have said that our company's primary goals for 2008 are to increase sales and service installation rates and to achieve sustainable, positive free cash flow as soon as reasonably possible," said Mr. Crowe. "We have already made real progress toward achieving these important objectives. I expect that the organizational changes we are announcing today will further contribute to the improvements we have already realized."

I haven't been keeping up on it since Forsee at Sprint had to step down. Things were on track then imho, but the train got derailed, when Forsee was knocked out.
Also too many other things to dd right now.
It's clearly great for trading by looking at the chart, but I haven't been greatly interested getting back into it.
Still speculation on "if they CLWR/S will come to agreement".
INTL is stuck in WiMax with some many billions. Those things will probably come together.
But with the slowing economy / recession already (dare I say it) / reduced consumer spending / more severe competition, etc. , seem it will add much greater challenges to an already overwhelmingly challenging situation.
If they CLWR / Sprint finalize their deal, INTC throws in another $2 bil........and then CLWR pps takes a severe dive after that I might jump back in to catch a bounce.
It would be nice to get some more people back on the board here discussing it.
Have a nice weekend, Excel!

Report: Intel will put $2B in Sprint-Clearwire WiMax effort
Friday, February 15, 2008 - 11:18 AM PST
Puget Sound Business Journal (Seattle)
Sprint Nextel Corp. and Clearwire Corp. may receive a $2 billion investment from Intel Corp. for the parties' potential WiMax joint venture, according to a published report Friday.
Despite the deal reported in TheStreet.com, which would create a company that combines Sprint's licenses in the 2.5-gigahertz wireless spectrum and Clearwire's spectrum, company officials on both sides refused to comment.
"Rumors are just kicking around again. It's rumor," Sprint spokesman John Polivka said. "We don't comment on rumors. There's nothing going on."
Added Intel spokesman Kari Aakre: "We're not commenting on any speculation. It's our policy to not comment on rumors."
WiMax, the high-speed wireless network that promises data connections three to five times faster than currently available, is now in "soft launch" with Sprint.
In Chicago, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Sprint employees have access to the WiMax network. The commercial launch is slated for the middle of the second quarter.
In November, Sprint and Clearwire canceled a joint deal to develop Sprint's $5 billion WiMax network.
Although not commenting on the latest reports, Aakre said Intel has enjoyed a relationship with Sprint and Clearwire during the past few years.
In July 2006, Intel invested $600 million in Kirkland-based Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR) to help accelerate deployment of WiMax in the United States. Likewise, in the middle of this year, Intel will provide the chips in laptop computers to enable them to be WiMax ready.

The thought of stockloser actually having such logical behavior and follow through is very pleasant considering the other alternative.
There was considerable consolidation in BI in 2007 and seems DWCH is maybe one of the single most attractive targets especially at this current pps.
I'm sure you saw that minuscule OS too.

Man, this stock is boring with this light volume! Having said that... with their cutting edge products, huge list of well-established companies, their incredibly small market cap etc. they seem completely ripe for a takeover with an offering well above the current pps.
Actually there is already a new CEO and Pres. Still doing dd, but haven't found anything unusual in his selling his shares other than he his in the process of retiring.
It did impact the eps, but given the small OS, it was to be expected imo.
Still doing dd.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing if I were in the position.
One thing to keep an eye on imo, if they float down later, is that BTP outbid Lion's Gate on DISK lastyear.
Speculation of renewed interest in DISK by Lion's Gate could be interesting.
Maybe not,
