Thanks, Zorax. I didn't get charged nor was my RAV listed as a free trial. It certainly did come from Microsoft whatever they say. The scams people run these days are more and more sophisticated. This one apparently affected a large number of people, since, of course, most of us run windows and have to update from time to time, and that's where this program comes from for sure! I hope enough people complained to MS that they investigate this problem. I worry now about what else might get downloaded with those necessary MS updates. . .
Well, I can tell you, there was no other way that RAV could have gotten onto my computer. This is my trading computer only and I am very strict about how I use it in order to avoid being hacked. I haven't downloaded a new program in years and don't visit unfamiliar sites, receive emails on it, etc. Plus the fact that RAV installed the same date as the MS updates and used the Defender icon in Security settings makes me certain that is where it came from. Perhaps MS was unaware that an update got bundled with RAV, but sure makes one wonder what else got downloaded with those MS updates that we are told to trust implicitly since they come directly from Microsoft. . .
No, it sure doesn't make sense that MS would bundle their updates with another company's antivirus, but I have no other explanation since the MS updates were done on September 9th the same date the RAV antivirus showed as downloaded and I have not downloaded anything other than those MS updates or clicked on any questionable links or visited any odd websites since then. It is also curious that it used the Window Defender's shield symbol which when clicked opened the RAV antivirus program. That was why I was wondering at first if this was an official MS program replacing Windows Defender. Obviously it was not! Strange for sure!
The uninstall as I outlined previously went very smoothly, no problems, quick, efficient and thorough as far as I can tell. Just completed a full deep scan with Windows Defender and it found nothing.
OK, here's what I did. Because this program was using too much CPU and RAM, and Windows Defender had worked fine for me in the past, I wanted to remove RAV and all its components, even if it is a legitimate program..
First I double checked to see when all that RAV stuff was downloaded -- yup, 9/9/24, the day I downloaded and installed all the accumulated MS updates, as I suspected, so somehow this program had to have been bundled with those MS downloads -- sneaky little bugger!!!
Then I went to Settings, Apps, installed apps, found RAV Antivirus in the list, clicked on it and chose uninstall, which it then did.
Next I went back to settings, Update and Security, windows security, virus and threat protection, virus and threat protection settings, and clicked on real-time protection to turn Windows Defender on (it had been in the OFF position). VOILA! As I suspected, Windows Defender was still on my computer, just turned off by RAV!
Then I went to Task Manager to ensure rsEngineSvc was no longer listed under Processes. It was gone! Just for luck I then scanned with Malwarebytes. Done.
All's well that ends well. Perhaps others will find this helpful if they encounter the same problem I did finding RAV on my system after downloading Microsoft Updates!
Newly
Will do, Cintrix.
Thanks, cintrix, yes I had already seen that. I just want to be sure if I delete RAV, which can be a legitimate program or a virus, I can get my Windows Defender back if, in fact, it is no longer on my computer.
Thanks, Larry. I had considered that but wasn't sure whether windows defender is actually gone off my computer because under settings, windows security, virus and threat protection, bottom of page says I can keep my current provider (presumably RAV) and turn on for windows defender antivirus to check periodically for threats. Do you suppose this means if I delete RAV windows defender will return to monitoring??? I notice that RAV actually took over when one clicks on the WD shield which makes it look like it comes from microsoft.
I'm well, Larry, thanks for asking, just not trading as vigorously as previously, LOL
I am running Win10. On Sept 9 I downloaded accumulated windows updates. Now my Windows Defender is gone and something called RAV antivirus is installed. I downloaded no other programs except the windows updates. Does anyone know if this program comes from MS? If not, how did it get downloaded with windows updates? How do I get my Windows Defender back? When I go to windows security in settings and click on virus and threat protection then click on the windows defender shield RAV comes up.
Is anyone else experiencing this???
TIA
And a very Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year to you, too, Trinityz1.

Hi, sidedraft. Reading in batch mode is for premium (paying) members only except during Happy Hour (like now -- one hour after market closes every Friday when everyone can access premium featues). Have you never tried it on Friday afternoons? It's enough to make one want to pay up and join, LOL.
Morning, Dave. I notice that when reading posts one at a time the post number shows as for example "Post# 888 of 888" but when reading in batch mode it now only shows the post number and not the total number of posts. Is that going to be permanent or will both post number and total posts again show when reading in batch mode? It is annoying to have to switch to individual posts from batch mode just to find out how many more messages one must read to be caught up and then having to switch back to reading in batch mode.
TIA
Dave, Just wanted to add my voice to others with regard to the hover feature of the Main Menu. Every time I go to or return from my browser's back arrow (top left) I cross that Main Menu hover feature and it is rather annoying. I do hope you intend to correct it to a click only in the near future. TiA.
I also notice that the new format has eliminated the notice that used to be at the bottom right of the screen stating who you are and what Web # you are on. Will that be added back in future?
Precisely my point! It always amazes me when reading the premium boards to see the total lack of respect some presumed adults have for other people and their opinions. It shouldn't require a TOS to make Ihubbers act decently and with some maturity. Disgusting what some people will do and say when they believe they are anonymous!
Of course, when presumed adults are engaging in fisticuffs over masks on airplanes, it is obvious that bad behavior is not restricted to Ihub, but has become pervasive in our society!
Are all members and threads obligated to obey the TOS! rules???
Apparently not, since some premium boards are full of name-calling, personal attacks and swearing, all violations of the TOS for stock boards.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Admins.

Looks interesting. Let us know how you like it.

Sounds like you are as cautious as I am with info on your computer.
Every time I buy a new computer I methodically go through and delete or disable everything I don't want/need, change what services I can to manual, delete questionable preloaded programs (like Cortana), disable all remote connections, etc. Every time I run an MS update, I recheck to ensure MS hasn't turned on any service I don't want turned on.
I also immediately install WinPatrol on any new computer as it alerts me if MS tries to change a program (MS contantly tries to reawaken OneDrive, and WinPatrol warns me so I can refuse this program as I don't want my info in the cloud).
Also, for years I have been following BlackViper's suggestions re services. See:
https://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-10-service-configurations/
It's like a game of cops-and-robbers with MS and computer owners, isn't it, LOL.

I also notice funny business with updates going on with my computer, despite trying to stop updates without notification and approval by me.
The latest problem is when I first turn on my computer and the main screen has loaded it cycles for some time before I can open any program which tells me you are correct and MS is doing something in the background when I boot up. I've tried making some changes but nothing helps.
Anyway, I also shutdown using a power strip, but after shutting down with the start button. I suspect MS might be sending updates when the computer is off but somehow they load when I boot up each day (is that even possible?).
One thing you might try instead of shutting down with the power strip is to first do a hard shutdown by pressing control+alt+delete a few seconds, then turn off the power strip. Somehow that feels safer to me, but not sure.
I am also tempted to go to a Mac but dread the learning curve, LOL.

Hi, Geoff. I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but like mr40, I backup all my files onto flash drives as I create them, and never leave anything I create on any of my three computers. I just plug the flash drive into whichever computer I want to use whenever I need to access any file I've created (all three computers have the same programs on them). This way I don't have to backup the files again, since I always access them from the flash drive. Once a week I use the primary flash drive to update the files on a secondary flash drive, so I have two identical sets of files just in case of a problem with one of them. I also backup specialty programs I use (those that cannot be downloaded online or for which I have no installation disc) just in case of problems. This isn't exactly synchronization but it works for me!
Hope all is well with you and yours. How's Reagan? Happy Thanksgiving -- I believe Canadian Thanksgiving is the same date as U.S.'s, correct?

Sorry, I don't know why I thought that post was to me. Duh! I used to love S.I. back when it was in its prime with all the info a trader could want. Then it started to go downhill when most everyone jumped ship and ended up here. I don't post there anymore either.
Anyway, have a nice trip and a great Thanksgiving. Good talking to you.
Newly
Well, that was me some years ago when I first started posting here. I suppose I should update it but I don't have a more recent photo worth posting.
Anyway, nice to see some of the old timers still here. I remember you from SiliconInvestor. Jane, isn't it? I don't post much anymore but I'm still here and still trading.
Good luck to both of us on T. I see it has turned down again, but I still think this is the area where it should reverse if it is going to. What do you think of the charts?
Newly
in edit: T certainly pays a nice dividend. . .
I actually do buy-and-hold in another account, an IRA, but I guess I'm just not as good at it as Buffett because I always make more money in my trading acount, not to mention trading is more fun.
As I said, each person has to find what works for them personally. . .
I'm watching T closely. It turned up right in the area where I expected it, but remains to be seen if the move is sustainable. Mind you, I wouldn't be surprised to see price drop a bit further, but it certainly appears to me the charts are setup for a sustained move up from this area. Hope isn't in my traders' toolbox so I'm ready to jump ship if necessary. . .
Newly
In edit: the greater market isn't being very cooperative today. . .
Right you are, see my last post (edited).
Newly
Well, Buffett is an investor. I'm a trader. Different species, LOL. Certainly there are many ways to skin a cat. We each have to find what works for us and use that. Buffett found his milieu; I found mine. Different strokes for different folks. . .
Newly
Really? Wow, I always thought all-time low meant forever, LOL. Anyway, mute point now. Price has fallen to my projected reversal point. Do or die time for T and me. . .
Newly
In edit: Thanks for the "moot" not "mute". I thought something was wrong there when I wrote that, LOL. Brain fart! And yes, I also use F/A as part of my traders toolbox, though mostly only to identify stocks I want to trade.
Yes, I can agree with that. Nothing can predict stock price movement with 100% accuracy. However, the chart reflects the attitudes and actions, past and present, of other market participants, thus offering a glimpse into the probabilities of future price movement and direction. Of course the chart is open to interpretation and must be analyzed and integrated with other available information. If the trader is good at that, he/she will win more times than he/she loses. If not, well. . .
Personally, I do not use T/A in a vacuum. I have been trading actively for over 22 years now as my main source of income and I am not a gambler. T/A is the best road map I have, bringing together all the information available to me and is thus most helpful to me in my trading.
But then perhaps I am just lucky at guessing because I have far more winning trades than losing ones!
Newly
You could, of course, be right, but I have to follow my T/A. Time will tell the tale. . .
BTW, Price is not currently breaking the all-time low -- my charts only go back so far but show a low of 18.85 in March of '03. Can't say if there is a lower low prior to that. I expect I will sell my position well before that point if price continues to deteriorate.
Good luck to us both.

Dr. Paul Marik speaks out about his lawsuit and the pandemic. I quote Dr. Marik: "It's tragic what's happening in our world." "It's all about money."
Long, but worth the watch before this video disappears (was posted on YouTube 11/17/21):
IMO T should reverse up in the very near future. Would help if the overall market would just cooperate a little, LOL. My money is on support around 23.77 and, if not, beyond that is 19.29 (if greater market persists in this downward move). T's Monthly, Weekly and Daily charts all look ready for an upward swing. . .

A better solution: download either Iris or f.lux (free programs) for adjusting the color/brightness mix on your display. I have been using f.lux for several years because as a trader I am on the computer for hours each day and was developing a severe case of dry-eye due to the blue light of the display. Since I installed f.lux, my dry-eye is gone and I can easily adjust the display colors/brightness as desired.

LOL. Reminds me of my first car -- I was 16 and got an old 1932 Chevy coupe. My boyfriend and I rebuilt the engine completely and for years I fixed my cars myself. Nowadays I look into a car engine and can't even find the carburetor (do modern cars even HAVE carburetors?). I get that same feeling when I look at that picture you posted of your computer. Just looks like gobblygook to me, LOL.

OMG, you're right, Bruce had the Dream Machine board. I forgot there was a computer board other than this one way back when. Oh, well, blame it on premature senility, LOL.
Newly
I have to thank Bruce Thompson who originally moderated this thread (may he rest in peace) for helping me when I built a computer using his specs. I've learned a lot since then, but still miss Bruce and all his help with computer problems! Things change so quickly, there's always more to learn. . .
Newly
LOL. I'm still using Quicken 2001 and WordPerfect10, as well as programs from my DOS computer back in the 80's and I can tell you it ain't easy bringing older DOS programs forward to new computers with more advanced OS's. . .
Newly
I agree. System updates are very annoying -- MS keeps changing things but don't seem to make anything better, and it is a pain having to learn a new system right after mastering the older one, LOL. I still use WinXP on my old computer and I think it is the best microsoft OS. They should have stopped there!!!
Newly
I have never used Win7 (I have Win10) but every time I do a system update I recheck to ensure One Drive has not been reactivated, but it never has been. I believe files are not automatically backed up to One Drive unless you set up your computer to save your files there. I immediately disabled One Drive when I bought my Win10 computer (and also Cortana), and back up all my personal files onto thumb drives so even if my computer gets hacked, they won't find anything useful on it.
Newly
To uninstall One Drive (Microsoft's Cloud) in Windows 7 Click the Start button, type Add Programs in the Search box, in the list of results, click Programs and Features. Click Microsoft OneDrive, and then click Uninstall. You may be prompted for an admin password.
