Sirit broadens its patent portfolio with three additional applications
Designed to enhance functionality and performance of readers in the
supply chain
TORONTO, March 15 /CNW/ - Sirit Inc. (TSX:SI), a leading provider of
embedded RFID reader technology, announced today that it has filed three new
patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. All three
patent filings are related to UHF radio frequency identification technology;
two of the patents are in the area of RFID reader architecture with the third
addressing high-efficiency RFID antenna technology.
"Sirit continues to believe that the success of UHF RFID will depend on
exhibiting superior reader performance, coupled with simple installation
requirements and cost-effectiveness for the end user," said William Staudt,
President and CEO. "The patents filed today are all linked to those goals. Our
team of dedicated RFID engineers continues to push the envelope of advanced
RFID techniques that will position Sirit to deliver best-in-class,
next-generation RFID reader technology designed to meet increasing market
demands for higher performance and more robust functionality."
The first patent covers a method of generating extremely linear amplitude
and phase modulation as used by the reader's transmitter. The method allows
for such linear modulation while at the same time maintaining a high DC
efficiency for the transmitter power amplifier. Requirements for linear
modulation combined with a high DC efficiency for the power amplifier are
traditionally difficult to unite. As a result of this method, Sirit is able to
deliver superior reader performance while simultaneously supporting Power over
Ethernet (PoE) for the RFID reader. PoE readers do not require a separate
local power infrastructure for the customer, thus facilitating faster RFID
infrastructure installations ("plug and play" with standard networking
equipment), resulting in minimized downtime and lower installation and
maintenance costs.
In addition to enabling PoE support, the ultra-linear modulation
performance minimizes reader-to-reader interference especially in "high-
density reader environments", without sacrificing performance where multiple
readers must coexist in confined warehouse or distribution environments.
Although this feature is key in geographic regions governed by FCC regulations
(e.g. North America), it is especially advantageous in regions governed by
ETSI regulations (e.g. Europe,) as the characteristics of such regulations
make effective operation in "dense reader environments" even more difficult.
The second patent covers a transmitter power control method that allows
for a highly controlled RF power setting by the user while also minimizing the
impact of potential transmitter phase-noise behavior. The method results in
enhanced reader performance through heightened reader sensitivity, which
allows for more tags to be read in real-life situations where RF tagged
objects absorb some of the RF energy. The accurate power control also allows
the user to set power levels for the RFID reader without the need to verify
the results, thus allowing for faster installations with reproducible results.
The third patent covers a reader antenna concept that allows for improved
antenna gain conservation, and subsequently enhanced performance not realized
through traditional antenna concepts. As a result, the Sirit antenna concept
allows for improved tag read performance and read rates (at any random spatial
orientation) that are less susceptible to possible degradation resulting from
frequency hopping.
Sirit expects these patents, along with other filed and proprietary
innovations to be implemented in Sirit's forthcoming next generation UHF
products.

LXE, Intel and Sirit to Collaborate on Forklift-mounted RFID Data Collection Solutions
By Editorial Staff
Supply & Demand Chain Executive
Atlanta — March 2, 2005 — Technology companies LXE, Intel and Sirit are collaborating on what they say will be the first forklift-mounted radio frequency identification (RFID) data collection solutions for use in warehousing and distribution that will enable customers to garner the benefits of RFID throughout their warehouse beyond simple compliance.
As the lead in this development, LXE brings its 35-plus years of experience in developing wireless products and solutions, antenna engineering talent through its sister divisions in EMS Technologies, and a customer base including most of the top companies implementing RFID in their supply chain operations today, according to the provider.
The new systems will utilize the Intel IXP4XX product line of network processors for application processing and network transmission. The processors are based on high-performance, low-power Intel XScale technology, enabling implementation in a variety of form factors.
Sirit brings its RFID design capabilities and will provide the RFID expertise and RFID reader module components supporting EPCglobal Class 0, Class 0+, Class 1 and UHG Gen2 protocols. The reader will leverage Sirit's existing technology collaboration with Intel to produce standards-based building block technology for RFID readers, the solution providers said in their announcement of the project.
"LXE has always excelled in delivering products and solutions for mobile data collection," says Jim Childress, LXE president and general manager. "Our history illustrates the value of real-time mobile data capture, versus static or batch. Now LXE extends that value to RFID-based data collection."
Dick Sorenson, LXE director of product management, added that as companies move beyond pure compliance operations, they are coming to need reliable solutions for forklift-based operations. "With a mutual commitment to open standards, we've got the right teammates in Sirit and Intel with complementary skills to meet the challenge," Sorenson said.
Doug Davis, vice president of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group and general manager of the company's Infrastructure Processor Division, noted that Intel provides a range of computing and communications building blocks to support the growing RFID infrastructure. "This development effort can help customers use that infrastructure to rapidly realize cost-savings at the warehouse," he said.
William Staudt, president and CEO of Sirit, said that his company anticipates building on the relationship that Sirit has had with LXE over the past three years. "In particular, we look forward to following the success of a mobile, standards-based solution such as LXE's MX3-RFID with a forklift solution as supply chain customers move beyond compliance to reap benefits of RFID internally," Staudt said.
For a contrary view of the future of the RFID market, see the article "The O'RFID Factor: A 'No Spin' Look at Where Radio Frequency Identification Is Headed," in the October/November 2004 issue of Supply & Demand Chain Executive.

Looks like some good gains here.
Too bad the volume is so low.
Oh well, it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp, burnt stick.
Good morning! Gotta run. See ya.
OK. Good Morning!
I'll get back to you on that.
Hey Burp....I see lines stretched across roads quite frequently where I live. Road construction is ongoing...never seems to stop around here as the population steadily increases and existing roads simply aren't adequate.
Am wondering if SIRIT has any contracts here. Do you know?
.
Oops, you got the wrong letters in there. It's sirit.com not sint.com
update ,,,thanx , burp this may help some for srttf,,,the page is
need the http://www.sirit.com
Hi mick, nice to see you. I was trying to see if anyone else knows about this company but they're pretty obscure.
They're based in Toronto. They make RFID (radio frequency identification) systems. For instance, put a small radio transponder in vehicles, so that they don't have to stop when they drive through a toll booth... the toll booth identifies the vehicle with a radio burst and payment is automated.
Or, useful for driving in & out of parking garages without stopping, etc.
The applications for RFID are interesting.
I saw someone walking around Zeev board with a pair of shoes that looked suspiciously like mine, but I didn't say anything.
I've never figured out why this stock stays so low volume. RFID industry is kind of a buzzword... you'd think there'd be more interest here.
Oh well, thought I'd ask since you mentioned it a while back. Thanks for taking a "look" at it.
hi burp , surfing and find you have something new for my viewing and it looks interesting.
SRTTF,,,
I Burp! Find your shoes? LOL, Sorry I don't have anything to add about Sirit. But I think that you're right it is not a trading stock. Looks to be a good investment though.
I picked this up as a long-term play quite some time back based on the industry (RFID), the company management, etc. and other DD from back then.
I haven't considered it as a trading stock, nor have I done continued research.
Maybe I'll do a search to see if anyone else on iHub has mentioned it...
Do they stuff in Canada where you can see insider trades? I would check that out if they do.
Well it doesn't usually move much in either direction. Looks good to hold onto for awhile. Sad thing is the volume is so low.
Thanks for any input you can provide here. I may be the only person on iHub with stock in this company.
Yesterday was a selloff though, I'm guessing in anticipation of earnings.
It's a pretty obscure stock. I see there was a volume spike yesterday. What's the volume today?
Must have been expected and added into the value already. Not much movement either way on SI.TO
