Thanks for the warning, gp. ( :
At least I'll be sitting outside on a warm sunny afternoon when I smoke it.
Whoa! My experience with the Ancient Warrior is it has a 'left jab' somewhat akin to Mike Tyson! LOL
Great taste, just be aware they hit back!
Enjoy the smokes and Florida. Sounds like a great place to be right now with the rainy, dismal last few days we've had around here.
Heading to Florida for a couple weeks soon so I got a Drew sampler that includes a couple of Tabacs, one of my favorite smokes.
And to treat myself, I got a nice single to try.
A Gurkha Ancient Warrior El Duke torpedo 4 3/4 x 60
Yes, this is a good smoke, for sure. They are smooth, but with ample flavor and body. I enjoyed my 'virtues' and would not pass the opportunity to obtain more!
Nexst up to write about, the Man o War Virtue.
Yummy! Another EXCELLENT cigar. When you take a puff of this sucker, you get a nice, mild taste that lingers without being wimpy. I would rate it mild to medium, another finger burning good cigar that goes nice with watching the lake! Small hint of butter after a nice puff, really a good smoke. Pretty much the opposite of the Obsidian which is a real bold smoke.
Rough life GP, lol.
Here is the Pinar Del Rio Sampler I had:
5 different cigars in all. Don't remember all the names, but the Yellow one is the one you give to one of your friends you don't like. The other 3 colored ones are ok, but the Obsidian is MAGNIFICO!
Bold deep taste, nice draw, really fills the mouth with earthy richness. I can almost taste the soil that the tobacco was grown in. (In a good way, lol) It was finger burning good, and a cigar I put on my list of all time faves! The 10pk at CI was $25, a great deal for these smokes.
After that, the red label one was REALLY good, then the black label, blue label, and the yellow label you give to the dog.
Sounds like a plan! You'll have to figure out a portable humidor! Plastic bags will work with something inside to hold the moisture. Maybe a small humi-pak such as comes in a box of Fuentes! Or one of the small devices the various mail order plaecs sell.
If you have access to Cubans then you certainly must have something to keep them humified! LOL
5 Vegas ain't bad. I had to ssacrifice a Feunte Hemmingway maduro yesterday, sitting out in the sunroom with a huge steaming mug of good strong coffee, looking at the lake ..... Tough!
I still have a bunch of Gurkhas, still a good smoke. I packed a bunch of Tabak Especials with me on the trip, the Pinar Del Rio 5 packs sampler (The Obsidian was in it, AWESOME!) and a few Rocky Patels. After I ran out of my stash, had to hit up the foreign PX and get some Cubans. They were dry as heck, and I din't have my humidor, so I suffered, lol. One of the first things I did when I got back was get my humidor back in shape, rotate my cigars, and suck down a 5 Vegas.
LOL, I'll say! I packed about a week of cigars with me, which lasted 5 days. Luckily they sell Cubans out where I was, a foreign run base that had a nice selection of smokes. I smoked a lot of MonteCristos and Cohibas.
Glad to see you made it back all in one piece. That one week trip got a little long in the tooth, didn't it?
I've heard that. I ordered a lot of Gurkhas my last order ... should have varied it up a little more. It's pretty damn uppity to tire of Gurkhas, eh?
FIRE EM UP!
Hey GP. Got LOTS of cigars to write about, and so little time. As a quick preview, let me just say one thing:
Pinar Del Rio Obsidian.
Man oh MAN is that a great and tasty smoke.
Hello GP. Forst off, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Yep, I get some real Cubanos out here. SO far, the best in my opinion has been the Guantanamera. Oh man, finger burning good! Will need to smok one up and do a review. I have smoked a BUNCH of cigars since I last posted, forgot to write down my thoughts, but will do so in the coming days. Yesterday, smoked up a Cuban Cohiba Panetela. Nice small smoke when you just need to do a quickie.
Let me know how that Gurkha Crest is. The last Gurkha I got in my humidor is a 'Special Maduro' I also still have about 7 Spec Ops from the travel humidor deal. Gave the knife and coin to my father.
Enjoy Thanksgiving with family! Will be eating some turkey tonight after a nice run. HOOAH!
Sounds like you enjoy those Widow Makers ... I'll have to try one.
Don't think I asked already, but I might have .... Do you have access to Cuban smokes in any of the foreign commissaries/PX's? Just thought it might be a possibility, since we're the only country who cuts off our own nose just to spite our face by boycotting Cuban cigars.
As for me, I'll have to settle for a Gurkha Crest myself tomorrow. Going to the Casino I think so have to take a couple of smokes to burn while I am there.
It's getting close to 'restock' time. Humidor is getting low!
Watch your 6 in those 'nasty areas'.
Hello Slojab and other cigar lovers! Got back yesterday from a trip to some nasty part of Afghanistan. Smoked some cheapies, nothing to write home about. Will hopefully be smoking a Gurkha this afternoon. I got a Widow Maker on tap.
They have coffee samplers, too. Java, I'm not crazy about.
I like Tabacs the best. I mentioned them before and I think you tried them.
Thanks Slojab, I will try the Patel sampler. I am also a HUGE fan of the coffee cigars. I forgot what I have now, but any listing of what you think is good will be appreciated for my next order.
I've gotten the Acid Collection a couple of times, myself CM.
The Kuba is the most flavored Acid I think and also comes in one of the Drew samplers along with the Isla de Sol you mentioned before. The Sols are awfully inconsistent.
I think you'll like the Acid Infused Tea.
My flavored favs (not to be confused with Flavor Fave, the goofy guy with the clock pendant!) are still the Tabacs, though. I'm a sucker for anything coffee.
I just finished a Patel sampler, btw. The last one was the Vudu. Nice one to end with and highly recommended. No review other than that. ( ;
ACID KUBA KUBA
Alright folks, my first REAL write up of a cigar. I am not as good as GP, but I will try.
FOr the first real review, had to go with what I actually smoked last night, which was an Acid Kuba Kuba, 5 X 54. For all of you cigar afficianados out there, you know that the Acid cigars are flavored. I am a big Acid fan, it makes for a great change of pace here and there after smoking regulars. Of course, being an Acid fan, I have really only ever smoked the Kuba Kubas. That will all change soon, as I got a collector's tin of ALL the different Acids, and my mouth waters just thinking about it!
Well, back to the smoke. THe Kuba Kuba is tasty as heck. Can't really describe the sweet taste it has, but it is a wonder on the lips before you even light it. I use a punch, so I made my nice hole, lit up, and took a draw. Mmmmmmm.....Like dessert after a good meal! The taste fills the mouth, especially on the roof of the mouth. Smooth! Not too sweet, but sweet enough to enjoy every puff, right up to the end.
On a scale of 1 - 10, this is a hard one, as it is flavored, but I give it an 8.5 for enjoyability and taste. Can't wait to start smoking the other ones and try the different flavors.
Tonight, I am smoking up an Alec Bradley Prensado, and will have the review tomorrow.
Your mindset won't allow anything but.
discuss pretty much nothing and enjoy it.
All negotiations should be done while enjoying a good cigar. ( :
Thanks Alpine, but we have TONS of cigars out here as well! WE put in a nice order with CI that we are all starting to smoke, and there are plenty of people out there that donate cigars to the troops.
Smoked up a real Cuban MonteCristo last night. Can't really rate it, was a rush smoke, I put it out and cut it off early, had a minor paperwork emergency that killed the smoke! I am hoping to start tomorrow on writing up all the different cigars I smoke. I got them all, from real nice Gurkhas and Cubans, down to some cheapo fun smokes.
How is the stash you got there?
It's funny, we have stupid meetings on some such idiocy every damn day out here, the kind that make you want to gauge your eyes out, and we END our day with a Cigar Club Meeting, and discuss pretty much nothing and enjoy it.
Hay CM, this is what I have left from Roatan if you Guys need anything please ask will send !
Had over 200 and only cost me 125$, had a guy show up any were I would go, at the marlin event we got food and drink he showed up behind me gave me a bag of cigars and a wink ,and because I smoke cigars had dealers showing me what they had! here try this! was great!
At the end of a brutal day, nothing is better than smoking up a fine cigar and letting the mind wander with the smoke.
Couldn't agree more. Brutal or not. ( :
As much as I enjoy ending the evening on my back porch, if it weren't for my cigar, I'd probably recline back and fall asleep. lol
Hey CM, I've been meaning to tell you that if you guys run low on smokes over there, just give me a yell. I've got a buttload of them and don't mind sharing. So just let me know what you're looking for and I'll do my best to hook you guys up.
Excellent article Slo! 100% agreement over here. At the end of a brutal day, nothing is better than smoking up a fine cigar and letting the mind wander with the smoke.
An insight into the art of cigars
By AUSTIN SMITH, Opinion Columnist

Smith is a student at the University of Northern Iowa.
Anybody who has known me for longer than a few minutes can tell you that I am an enthusiastic cigar smoker. It is something that many people identify me with and it is one of my favorite pastimes.
But this love for cigars does not stem from the nicotine or the tobacco leaves, and this article is not written in an attempt to deny the potential health risks of tobacco usage. Rather, this is an attempt to show that a cigar is so much more than what most people consider it to be.
When alone, a cigar is a way to reflect and collect one's thoughts. Many aficionados are content to sit by themselves with no other stimulus and consider issues in life, be them trivial or profound. The slow roll of the smoke and the lingering flavor is a way to slow down and remember that life, like the brown leaves, is burning away and should be cherished for all the work and effort that comprises it.
Marcus Aurelius wrote in his “Meditations” that a man should be able to retreat within himself when he feels the need to escape the world, for a man cannot always convalesce to a beach or mountain home to become isolated, but he has always with him his own mind and conscience.
In this, a man should be able to withdraw into his thoughts and his own soul to escape and remove himself from the overwhelming world in which he has so little control. I believe in this sentiment, and have come to find that cigars are a method through which I am able to smoothly transport to that place of mental serenity, as if striking a match equates to turning the ignition and beginning a cerebral retreat.
As unusual or un-Christian as it may sound, many of my most heartfelt prayers and penitent moments with God have come at the butt of a Man O' War or Rocky Patel.
One is hard pressed to come off a cigar feeling less content with the happenings of life than before they began it, and based on multiple conversations with others I am sure to not be the only person who feels this way.
The social cigar is another great thing and is valuable in its own ways. I firmly believe, and have witnessed repeatedly, that a cigar can bring out of even the immature man conversations of depth and understanding. One would be very hard pressed to find an instance of a group sitting to enjoy a smoke in which the ensuing conversation was of purely trivial topics, or where regret for having given both time and cigar to the persons involved was greater than the appreciation for the conversation and company.
My closest friends and I consistently indulge in discussions pertaining to life, death, humanity, relationships and philosophies amongst the smoke. This simple roll of combustible leaves is often a catalyst for respect and connection between human beings, even in an instance of getting to know a new person for the first time.
Many consistent cigar smokers openly offer their own cigars to others, even when hardly knowing them; for the time spent in their enjoyment is always well received. It is not difficult to be grateful for all that was brought by the cigar you let somebody else smoke.
It is a thing that is associated often with degrees of manliness and sophistication. Cigars do bring these things about in an individual, but not necessarily for the reasons people often assume.
Yes, a cigar can give presence to a modest man on aesthetics alone. But the act of smoking a cigar, especially with others, deepens relationships and subtly develops a sense of character that is reflected in the one who partakes.
And while it may seem strange to think of a female cigar aficionada, they do exist and are just as welcome (if not more so) into any given group of smoking men for their rarity of company as well as perspective. It is for this that I think people see the character of it, even though it is not often recognized as such.
Whatever the case, I continue to keep cigars as a part of my life because they help reinforce meditations, thoughts, prayers and the most valued of friendships. I cannot imagine what my personality would be like without the effects that cigars have covertly melded into it. The secondary and tertiary effects on lifestyle and mental health are very much real, and are nearly impossible to deny by anybody who has experienced them firsthand.
GP, are you around bro? Smoking a LOT of good cigars out here, and need your expertise.
Going to be smoking a Nicaraguan/Honduran mix tonight, a Graycliff Turbo Edicion Limitada Super Toro. I am currently out in Afghanistan on a tour, and I started a cigar club out here. Got about 8 of us that went in on a bunch of cigars, and we try to do a different one each night.
Yesterday was an Isla del Sol, a sweet cigar, but nice and smooth.
Also got lots of Cuban cigars out here, as this is a NATO base, so the German and Dutch PXs sell the real Cubanos. Will buy and smoke and give some reviews.
It has been a LONG time since I posted on here, hope everyone is still enjoying a good cigar and will share their experience.
Friday night flying down to Roatan to do a little fishing and load up with Honduras Cigars

Thanks .. will check it out!
LOL, sorry GP. If I win the lottery over at the "Club Lotto" board, I will buy you a case of each. If you ever get bored, take a gander over there, great people!

Well ....... not quite, but I'm working on it! LOL
I have had three Opus X sticks, and they were good. That's about it though, as far as anything in the $25.00 range or higher.
I guess I'll just have to make do with my Cohiba Black Supremos, and Ghurka Centurians... for now.!
You know how to make a guy feel truly deprived, CM ...
The Most Expensive Cigars in the World
I just KNOW these are all in GP's humidor!

I found a great article that just had to be a Sunday Fun piece. But $1,500 for one cigar? That is one expensive stogie…
Ever wondered how much the 10 most expensive cigars in the world will set you back? As anyone who regularly smokes cigars can tell you, the hobby is not a cheap one. In fact, it’s common for anyone entering a cigar shop for the first time to be overwhelmed by the “normal” $2 to $28 price tag on a premium hand rolled smoke. After examining the ranks of decent, good, and great cigars, you’ll come to find a different class of smokes: the super-premium elite. Below, you’ll find ten of the world’s most expensive cigars.
¦Padrón Series 1926 80 Years – $30.00 The Padrón Serie 1926 80 Years was blended to celebrate the 80th birthday of the company’s founder, Jose Orlando Padron. This cheapest of the premium cigars comes both maduro and natural wrappers, packaged in boxes of eight, but can also be purchased one at a time from many local cigar shops.
¦Cohiba Esplendido – $34.00 The Cohiba brand was originally founded in the mid-sixties in Havana, Cuba, where its production continues today. The cigar is normally packaged in boxes of 25 and packs of three, which range in price from $92 for the three pack to almost $750 per box.
¦Stradavarius – $34.70 The Stradavarius Churchill is the most expensive of three sizes the cigar comes in. It is a mix of Nicaraguan, Dominican and Mexican tobaccos rolled in Dominican habano seed wrapper leaf. The cigar comes packaged as ten cigars in individual coffins inside a humidor chest.
¦Louixs – $50.00 Goldwin Metropolitan Company, manufacturer of the Louixs cigar claims that it is “the finest cigar money can buy.” It is made for the Beverly Hills Cigar club in a six inch by sixty ring gauge size and is available only as a single cigar in a rosado wrapper.
¦Arturo Fuente Opus X BBMF – $55.00 The BBMF in the name stands for Big Bad Mother- and I’ll let you finish the rest. It packs quite a punch and is extremely difficult to find most of the time. A few online retailers still have a few five packs left in stock, but they won’t be around for long.
¦Fuente Don Arturo AnniverXario – $78.00 Fuente president Carlito Fuente created this special tribute to his father, Arturo in 2001, but not released until 2008. The cigar comes in a chest of 46 maduro and 46 natural wrappers for a total of $7,500.
¦Arturo Fuente Opus X “A” – $79.00 A huge powerhouse of a cigar at 9.2 inches long and a 43 ring gauge, and one of the rarest in the world to boot. It comes only as a single cigar, and is available only in select shops and a few online retailers.
¦Cohiba Behike – $470 The first run of the Behike was released in 2006. One hundred custom humidors of 40 were released with serial numbered bands and a total cost of $18,000. The cigar is 7.5” by 52 ring gauge and is being re-released as a different blend this year for about $50 a stick.
¦Gurkha His Majesty’s Reserve – $750 Infused with Louis XIII Cognac, only 100 boxes a year are produced and dolled out personally by the company owner, K. Hansotia. It is 7.5” by 52, and at $750 per cigar, a box of twenty will set you back a cool $15,000.
¦Gurkha Black Dragon – $1,150 The most expensive cigar of the list is the first production of Gurkha Black Dragon. Only five hand carved camel bone chests of one hundred cigars. The cigar comes in one size, 8.5” by 52. One chest can be yours for $115,000. The second released “similar” blend is $10 to $15 a stick.
She'll be back, just thought it was time for a change. I miss her too!
Nice signature, BTE .. but I think I preferred the last one .. LOL
Will do GP, and THANKS for all the great posts you do, I have a bunch saved to go back to and try out those smokes you rave about.
I can see where knowing you have a good smoke waiting .. could mean a hell of a lot. I well understand the need for a little touch of home and civility in any foreign land.
You make sure you stay in touch here, both before and after you ship out. Need to hear from ya every once in awhile!
I am getting ready to head to Afghanistan in the summer, you can be sure I will have a nice bunch of Gurkhas with me. They are very military friendly, and send freebies to the boys overseas all the time.
Speaking of which, I need to make sure I get my dream humidor set up for the long trip over! I need as many good sticks as possible to keep me sane over there. Montecristos and Cohibas helped me make it through Iraq.
Yes sir, and you too!
I have to mow tomorrow ... always a good opportunity to burn one!
hi gp
smoking a Camacho Triple Maduro Robusto today outside as i mow the yard, great smoke but a bit overly hyped imo w/ an uneven draw, taste great a bit spendy tho, i got a pretty good deal on some 5 packs so i gave them a try
ps i will for sure let ya know how them "Wicked Indie's" turn out
enjoy my friend
I have seen that one online and in the catalogues .. Haven't tried it yet, but will have to after reading that review. Sounds like another Gurkha hit!
I have liked most every Gurkha I have ever tried, some more than others for sure, and a couple that didn't quite live up to the hype, at least in my opinion, but never really a bad one. I have a five pack of the "Crest" in my 'cooler-dor', just waiting for me to sample .. will be the first for them too.
Be sure and let us know how you like this "Wicked Indie". It sure sounds like a good smoke.
And come around more often .... you've been "AWOL" from the board long enough! LOL
Have a great one today and better one tomorrow.
thx for the info gp100357
gonna look into them
ps here is one i am awaiting on, i ordered a box last week and should be getting them any day now
Gurkha Wicked Indie Robusto: 5 x 52 Box of 50
i found them online for approx 3 bucks a stick
here are a couple reviews i found
http://www.cigarbeat.net/blog/tag/wicked-indie/
http://www.seriouscigars.com/gurkha-wicked-indie-cigar-review-a-444.html
They are as follows:
• Robusto: 5 x 52
• Toro: 6 x 54
• Churchill: 7 x 50
• XO: 6 x 60
The Gurkha Wicked Indie arrives in a box that resembles an older styled crate. The banding is very unique. If they are purchased by the box, they will come with 50 cigars in each one. Many of the reviewers seemed to gravitate towards the Toro size, and so the information below will be geared towards describing that particular stick.
When the Gurkha Wicked Indie was first lit, many of the reviewers said that the flavors were quite simple. It included a peppery type flavoring and a slight hint of wood. Soon after the beginning of the cigar, many reviewers noted that the taste profile changed to include a more significant cedar wood note that has a nice sweetness to it. About a tenth of the way through the smoke, the flavor profile began to ramp up quite a bit to include floral notes as well as a hint of a very flavorful mint taste. It was here that the flavors began to become deeper.
About half way through the cigar, a different type of flavor was detected. Caramel flavoring, mint and the cedar wood type notes were still very much present. The cigar remained smooth throughout the length of the smoke. The nub was even cool to the touch right down to the end.
The Gurkha Wicked Indie cigar was rated very highly among those that reviewed it. All of them said that they would like to include this stick in their humidors, and that they would recommend it to other smokers and friends. People who normally do not care for notes like floral or mint sang the praises of this great cigar. The complexity of the stick was highly rated. The burn and draw were also rated as excellent. The body and strength were rated mild to medium.
Just wanted to pass on informtion that I have found a new 'cheap' cigar ... that is just a pretty darn good smoke. They're called "Pirate's Gold", and they're made by Rolando Reyes, the maker of Puros Indios cigars. I ordered a bundle of 20 of these in the 5 X 50 size, with maduro wrappers, and they have proven to be a pleasant, medium bodied smoke that doesn't break the bank. They're normally available for under $2 a stick, and I snagged mine on the cigarbid.com auction site for $20 and change.
If you're looking for a decent 'cheap' smoke, you might give these a try. Good taste, good draw, pretty nicely constructed, and I've had a good even burn on the ones I have smoked.
I am sure you can do a lot worse ... as have I in the past. And at that price you can afford to pass out a few to those moocher buddies.
Just got my 'spring' order in yesterday. Several Ghurkas (mostly 5 packs of different ones), some CAO Blacks, a bundle of Puros Indios, a box of one I'm gonna try - Cuba Libre - and some more assorted five packs and samplers, including one of Don Lino Africas, something I have wanted to sample for a while.
I'm set for awhile.
Cigarbid.com .... good auction site, if you watch your bids closely. I saved nearly 50% from the normal selling prices. Only way to go!
Check 'em out!
Geesh, man, missed your post. Sorry. Hope you had a good weekend, good Easter holiday, a good cigar or two and maybe even a shot or two of good rum (I know that's cruel! )
Oh man, what a coincidence ..
Last evening, I was privileged to make myself a good strong cup of java, and head out to my deck, where I proceeded to destroy by fire one each, 'Genuine' Partagas Limited Edition 2004.
Talk about smooth ... and tasty ...... I had to consciously keep myself slowed down, to avoid burning it too fast!
I have never before had such a cigar in my life. Even the "Genuine" Cohibas I have enjoyed would not measure up to this Partagas. The draw, taste, burn, and overall construction were superb.
It was enough to make me want to move south, to a certain island located just under 100 miles from the Florida Keys.
So, I hope you are able to have some equal pleasure this weekend, while burning a few good ones yourself!
Happy Easter GP. Hope you smoke up a few good ones this weekend.
How about we add to that....
Ah, forget it, I was gonna say 'a woman' but that was before my wife handed me the list of chores I need to do!
