Your research is most likely correct about New Zealand. Back when I began my Peak Oil board, I put a geologist, the late Dr. "Zapata" George Blake, on retainer for a year to acquaint me with the Peak Oil topic and to guide me in my learning. We had lengthy talks on many Saturdays; he was quite knowledgeable.
I learned from Zapata George that he had a house built in New Zealand and he had a condo in Canada; his home was in Zapata, Texas. He wanted to make the move to New Zealand, but I believe that he was cut down my cancer.
In my youth, I was researching the prospect of moving to Australia, but doing so would have been questioned during the Viet Nam war. It was a nice pipe dream which I wish happened.

The North Island up around Aukland doesn't seem bad, nice sub tropical climate. Most of the immigrants from Europe live in that area. That is one remote place.
You and I are in the same boat ny friend. Prepped but outside the world.
In case of fuel shortages I am too far from anything to walk to. On the other hand we are too far for predators to walk to.
There is a horse farm a few miles away and I can ride so that is always on the back of my mind. Clydesdales though.
There is a corn farm about that far too. I figure that will turn wild but still produce something. Cattle corn though not food corn.
b4
yes we need to ready where we are! know your ground! know what you can do to make the most of it!
My research suggests the elites are moving to New Zealand.
b4
Right AP and av, Time may be too short for re-locating.
b4
but those who are trying to be Prepare, we can do it! look back in time and today add what you can be ready for anything!!!!!
Looks like we know why FEMA is building those long term underground facilities. When they come up out of their hole that 90% reduction in population should be done with. Their hands will be clean because they will say "Look, God did it not me".
I am looking hard but may not make the time! things are happening fast! get ready all! please be ready for anything!
From what little I've read, once you are settled down there and get your paperwork cleared you can have your belongings shipped in duty free. Now i've only looked into Central America, to get away from radiation in the US you need to get way south of the equator.
Been looking the hard part is moving my tools have to have!!!!!!
Looks like moving down into the southern hemisphere is the only prep needed. Beneath the southern cross there be safety, at least for a while. The old movie "On The Beach" may have been a prophecy.
Gee, it is hard to stay positive. Be sure not to eat food for the next 600 years.

If you have a group of people and a ready source of timber it is feasable. I was thinking along the line of a small family unit that just doesn't have the man power to spare, so solar fits in with my requirements.
I figure cell phones and internet will be off line. So unless ya'll are hooked up with ham radios with antenna towers it will be tough.
Seems like steam and turbine generated electricity works for most of the world.
Impossible to store enough fuel?
Wood is used to heat households now and was the primary fuel 100 years ago.
Of course, I've never built a steam driven electric generator cheeply.
Nuclear power is steam driven electricity on a large scale.
I think what you fail to realize is the labor that is needed to support independence from any power grid or fossil fuel source.
Or here's a bicycle driven generator:
Communication is super important. Without electric how can you check on the family. I agree it is last in the heirarchy of needs but I sure would like comms if TSHTF.
b4
Generators are great but the motive power is problematic, it's almost impossible to store enough fuel for long term off-grid use. Steam is labor intensive between supplying wood & stoking the fire plus minding the pressure guages. An exception and probably the best would be water wheels in a fast moving stream or mill pond.
Now solar is kind of expensive to set up but afterwards requires nothing other than wiping dust off the array and routine care of the batteries. Assuming we are in a time of great stress electricity is very low on the priority list (unless it runs the well pump) as labor needs to be focused on food, water and shelter.
Examples of simple steam engines
http://www.john-tom.com/html/ElmersEngines.html
Fascinating for me, I have no knowledge about electricity generation.
Any electric motor can be a generator of electricity.
"Steam turbine generators, gas turbine generators, diesel engine generators, alternate energy systems (except photovoltaics), even nuclear power plants all operate on the same principle - magnets plus copper wire plus motion equals electric current. The electricity produced is the same, regardless of source."
http://www.electricityforum.com/electricity-generation.html
A simple power source is a wood stove with water running through copper tubing, boiling water to produce steam.
A steam engine.
I've never experimented with the idea but any gas engine could be used as a steam driven source for power.
Steam energy should be used on the up-stroke and then on the down stroke.
Mechanical valves were used in steam locomotives.

A Timeline Showing the Deterioration of Major Industries Following a Truck Stoppage
Stoppagehttp://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/read-this-first-before-you-decide-that-preppers-are-crazy
The first 24 hours
• Delivery of medical supplies to the affected area will cease.
• Hospitals will run out of basic supplies such as syringes and catheters within hours. Radiopharmaceuticals will deteriorate and become unusable.
• Service stations will begin to run out of fuel.
• Manufacturers using just-in-time manufacturing will develop component shortages.
• U.S. mail and other package delivery will cease.
Within one day
• Food shortages will begin to develop.
• Automobile fuel availability and delivery will dwindle, leading to skyrocketing prices and long lines at the gas pumps.
• Without manufacturing components and trucks for product delivery,
assembly lines will shut down, putting thousands out of work.
Within two to three days
• Food shortages will escalate, especially in the face of hoarding and consumer panic.
• Supplies of essentials—such as bottled water, powdered milk, and
canned meat—at major retailers will disappear.
• ATMs will run out of cash and banks will be unable to process
transactions.
• Service stations will completely run out of fuel for autos and trucks.
• Garbage will start piling up in urban and suburban areas.
• Container ships will sit idle in ports and rail transport will be disrupted, eventually coming to a standstill.
Within a week
• Automobile travel will cease due to the lack of fuel. Without autos and busses, many people will not be able to get to work, shop for groceries, or access medical care.
• Hospitals will begin to exhaust oxygen supplies.
Within two weeks
• The nation’s clean water supply will begin to run dry.
Within four weeks
• The nation will exhaust its clean water supply and water will be safe for drinking only after boiling. As a result gastrointestinal illnesses will increase, further taxing an already weakened health care system.
This timeline presents only the primary effects of a freeze on truck travel. Secondary effects must be considered as well, such as inability to maintain telecommunications service, reduced law enforcement, increased crime, increased illness and injury, higher death rates, and likely, civil unrest.

A client of mine made me plant some geraniums already. I kept saying, "Its only April." It was a warm day though, couldn't talk her out of it.
It sounds like you folks out East are going to get it Sun/Mon.
Hope you did not plant early!

my friend have a back up we just need to look in are psst to see how it was done! I like what we have now BUT! to be Prepare know a back up plan!
most people damn all! flip a switch wright a check! its not easy to live off grid it is work! but if you do it right I can open a cold beer and see the game on my 62" HD!!! have not paid for power, water and the taxes for it in 10 years. I love it!!!!!!!
have seen the town below me power when out wee! I have power, I have power !!!!
Can't help you my friend. My well is only 35' deep and that takes a lot of hand pumping. I don't think a manual pump could lift 300'
I don't suppose you can just plug in a multi plug power strip with an on/off switch for the backup? Maybe tape some instructions on it for folks that don't know how?
b4
In the summer I can run irrigation hoses from my lake pump. It is useful for the garden with algae and stuff. I can wash my truck and cabins to but can't drink it.
Teach her, The rule is always have a back-up, she is your back-up. Women are smart and self reliance is a must, good to have a man around but should not be helpless when they aren't.
300' have a back up, like i do! but looking at adding a new solar power setup! I can run it off what i have but have to move power to get it to work! wire here wire there! like to keep it easy!
if I'm gone who could run it?
How deep is your well? Can you refit with an add-on hand pump?
b4
been thinking that, big job but need to redo it all just in case?
OK are you ready! I'm sorry for the people in the wake of all the Tornado's but the smiling face on TV are NOT GOING TO HELP THEM!!!
What DO YOU HAVE! #1 first aide #2 water #3 food #4 shelter.
BE ready people if the GOV. is over what thay can do YOU are on your own!
Make you a well house out of stone and steel, fire no problem.
Hi Somat, I have a well, I just been thinking of needing a base of supplies under ground because I could get wild fires! I do what I can on clearing but it still could can happen!
You can't drill a well?
Angel's wings most likely.

LOL hi Fade, being here is a good add to what is needed because ANYTHING can happen, all Prepares get ready and add INFO!
in the world of rednecks, i am an intellectual giant. I guess i need to get rid of all the copper.......
so a blind squirrel found a nut. I would rather be lucky than good........
When you have prepared for everything else turkey shells are the final step.
According to Steve Quayle, the world's leading expert on giants, the giants will return in the end times and can only be killed by copper. Turkey shells are the only common gun load using copper.
http://www.stevequayle.com/Giants/index2.html
b4
You must cut the head off too.
There are copper slugs avaiable but I never saw them.
been thinking about some underground storage! because of wild fires that could happen! OK how about I use a cistern tank 1700 gal size build under ground with vents? what do you think?
Ha! You need Red Bull for that!
Congrats on a very wise purchase though. Your food grade barrels will be a great blessing in times to come.
