Seems like steam and turbine generated electricity works for most of the world.

Impossible to store enough fuel?

Wood is used to heat households now and was the primary fuel 100 years ago.

Of course, I've never built a steam driven electric generator cheeply.
Nuclear power is steam driven electricity on a large scale.
I think what you fail to realize is the labor that is needed to support independence from any power grid or fossil fuel source.
