Consumers ditching land-line phones
By Leslie Cauley, USA Today
Traditional land-line phones, once the bedrock of communications in the USA, are quickly going the way of eight-track tapes as consumers go wireless or choose Internet-based phone calling. According to a report due to be released Wednesday by the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly one out of every six homes in the USA — 15.8% — had only wireless telephones during the second half of 2007, up from 6.1% during the same period in 2004.
"America has a lot of gabbers," says Sameer Mithal, a senior principal with IBB Consulting in Princeton, N.J. "The ability to talk on the go is what Americans like to do."
For big carriers such as AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), America's love fest with wireless is having a dramatic impact on what was once a core business.
In New York, land lines have plummeted 55% since 2000, according to a new report by Sanford C. Bernstein. New Jersey isn't far behind, with a 50% drop-off.
FIND MORE STORIES IN: New York | California | Texas | America | New Jersey | Connecticut | Prevention | Centers for Disease Control | Long Island | Princeton | Time Warner | Comcast | Verizon | Internet Protocol | VoIP | National Center for Health Statistics | Sanford C. Bernstein | Voice | Cablevision | Craig Moffett | Eric Rabe | IBB Consulting
States with the fewest land-line losses include Connecticut with 10%, Texas, 20%, and California, 21%.
Even so, it won't take long for the other 49 states to catch up to or surpass New York, predicts analyst Craig Moffett, author of the report. "This is a business that is not showing any signs of recovery," he says.
Wireless is a major factor, he says. Around the globe, consumers are clamoring for anything wireless — from high-definition video to gaming and mobile banking.
The trend is strongest among young adults: 34.5% of people 25-29 years old lived in households with only wireless phones. For those 30-44, the rate drops to 15.5%. It's 2.2% for those 65 and over.
The rise of cable telephony is another factor. Big cable TV operators such as Time Warner (TWX) and Comcast (CCW) have lured away millions of phone customers with cheap, or even free, VoIP services — short for Voice over Internet Protocol.
Verizon's experience in New York reflects the trend. Long Island cable TV operator Cablevision (CVC) today claims almost 1.7 million phone customers — and has eclipsed Verizon on Long Island as the dominant phone carrier.
Big carriers such as AT&T and Verizon are stuck, Moffett says. Even though fewer people are using land-line services, carriers still have to spend billions of dollars each year to maintain the networks.
About 21% of AT&T's annual revenue comes from the land-line business; Verizon has a bigger exposure, around 29%. The business accounts for about one-third to one-half of their profits, however, Moffett estimates.

Knicks introduce D'Antoni as their new coach
On the plus side, both carriers have strong wireless businesses that can help offset those losses. AT&T is the No. 1 wireless carrier, with more than 70 million customers; Verizon is No. 2, with slightly fewer.
Verizon says it's not worried. "We saw this trend coming for a long time," says spokesman Eric Rabe. That's why the company is building an all-fiber cable network "and going after television customers."
The report from the National Center for Health Statistics — part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — also found that one out of every eight homes, 13.1%, received all or almost all calls on wireless phones even though there was a land line in the home.
If the trends continue, the group said, public opinion surveys on health and other issues conducted only on landline phones could produce distorted results.

"Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose woman."
The priest asks, "Is that you, little Tommy Shaughnessy?"
"Yes, Father, it is."
"And who was the woman you were with?"
"I can't be tellin' you, Father. I don't want to ruin her reputation."
"Well, Tommy, I'm sure to find out sooner or later, so you may as well tell me now. Was it Brenda O'Malley?"
"I cannot say."
"Was it Patricia Kelly?"
"I'll never tell."
"Was it Liz Shannon?"
"I'm sorry, but I'll not name her."
"Was it Cathy Morgan?"
"My lips are sealed."
"Was it Fiona McDonald, then?"
"Please, Father, I cannot tell you."
The priest sighs in frustration. "You're a steadfast lad, Tommy Shaughnessy, and I admire that. But you've sinned, and
you must atone. You cannot attend church for three months. Be off with you now."

New Visual Reports Second Quarter 2002 Results
SAN DIEGO, May 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- New Visual Corporation (OTC Bulletin
Board: NVEI), an emerging provider of semiconductors to the high-speed data
networking industry, today reported financial results for the second fiscal quarter ended
April 30, 2002.
Total assets at April 30, 2002 were $8.6 million, a 207% increase from total assets of
$2.8 million reported at October 31, 2001. Total liabilities, excluding redeemable
preferred stock of $3.2 million, were $3.1 million at April 30, 2002, compared to total
liabilities of $2.3 million reported at year-end. Shareholders' equity increased by 396%
between year-end and April 30, 2002, to $2.4 million at April 30, 2002, from $484,000 at
October 31, 2001. The Company had $354,000 in cash at April 30, 2002, compared to
$86,000 at January 31, 2002 and $295,000 at year-end.
The improved financial position at April 30 is principally due to the acquisition in April of
a technology license from Adaptive Networks, recorded at the Company's cost of $5.7
million, net of accumulated amortization. The increase in liabilities is primarily the result
of a $1.5 million accrual representing future payments to be made for outsourced
technology development work.
Net loss for the second quarter of 2002 was $3.2 million, or $0.08 per share (basic and
diluted). This compares with net loss of $1.9 million, or $0.06 per share (basic and
diluted) reported for the first quarter of 2002 and net loss of $1.2 million, or $0.05 per
share (basic and diluted) for the second quarter last year. The increased loss in the
most recent quarter, compared to the same period last year, was due primarily to
non-cash charges of $1.4 million and a $650,000 increase in research and development
expenses. The increased research and development expense in 2002 is related to the
Company's acceleration of development of its FPGA prototype. The non-cash charges
relate to compensatory elements of stock issuances and the issuance of convertible
notes payable. Revenues were $0 in both periods, as the Company has been in the
development stage and working to complete its technology.
Cash provided by financing activities was $3.4 million during the first six months of
fiscal 2002, and consisted of proceeds from the sale of common stock, the exercise of
warrants to purchase common stock, and the issuance of convertible notes.

Web surfers snub pricier broadband Internet access
By Andrew Backover, USA TODAY
Broadband growth continues to slow as customers balk at higher prices and
companies scale back promotions.
The number of new broadband subscribers grew 12.6% in the first quarter
from the previous quarter, based on results from eight of 17 major players,
research firm ARS says.
That means it's likely that the industry's overall growth will fall short of the
15.8% growth from the third to the fourth quarter last year.
"If prices keep going up while the economy is going down, you have a perfect
recipe for slowing broadband growth," says ARS analyst Mark Kersey. The
slowdown could worsen because the second quarter is usually the slowest for
broadband growth, analysts say.
The biggest slowdown appears to be in digital subscriber line (DSL) service.
Verizon Communications signed up 13% more new customers in the first
quarter, down from 23% growth in the fourth. BellSouth's DSL customers
grew 17% compared with 34%.
In high-speed access via cable, AT&T Broadband posted 9.4% subscriber
growth from the fourth to the first quarter, barely besting a lackluster 8.5%
rise in the fourth quarter. AOL Time Warner's growth dropped to 14.5%
from 15.4%. Behind the trend:
Price. The average monthly cost of cable modem service in the fourth
quarter of last year rose to $44.22 — up 19% year-over-year.
Monthly DSL prices rose 7% to $51.67. As consumers feel the
economic slowdown, many are deciding to skip the extra expense. A
recent survey by Jupiter Media Metrix found that 76% of dial-up users
were not keen to pay more for broadband. While about 70 million
U.S. households could get broadband, only 11.6 million do. Prices
aren't likely to fall. Dozens of broadband players have folded or curbed
expansion during the telecom implosion. "Pricing is the critical thing,"
says Dave Burstein of DSL Prime.
Marketing. After rolling out big discounts late last year, which
boosted growth rates for the first time in two years, many companies
have now scaled back such deals because they hurt revenue, says
TeleChoice analyst Pat Hurley. Late last year, Verizon offered DSL for
the first three months at $29.95 monthly, plus a free camera. In March,
the cost was $39.95 a month for the first three months, plus a gift. The
$29.95-a-month offer resurfaced Thursday without the gift. Instead,
customers get the first month free if they sign up online. Comcast was
also offering free months last year, but no longer. "There is, in general,
weak marketing by providers," Hurley says.
Content. Though customers rave about faster speeds with broadband
than with dial-up connections, compelling content, such as videos and
music, is sparse. That does not "give people a reason to switch,"
Hurley says.

Some guys have all the luck....
