There lineup is down Jeff mcneil, (LOL, there goes the pennant!) now it is down Lindor (Which is the real loss). After awhile that does matter.
Look, Lindor's injury is some bad luck, but it's hardly the excuse if the Mets stumble their way out of a WC berth. You don't have to look too far and wide to see other teams decimated by injuries who are hanging tough. Tatis, Yelich, Pasquantino, Bieber, Yamamoto, Betts, Bohm, Mountcastle...and the list goes on. Lindor's absence is much shorter than many of the names mentioned above, and the replacements for Lindor have produced at a much higher level than the replacements for most of the players I've listed. The Mets have also benefited mightily from help by other teams; c'mon, how many times do expect the Giants to beat the Snakes?
All the Mets need to do is win a few games, regardless of who they field and regardless of who their rivals play. You can talk up how "lucky" and "weak" the Braves hits were and how hard done by Seve was, but that game wasn't close by any stretch. It was a 5-1 game that felt like 10-1. Plain and simple, the Mets got ragdolled by Schwellenbach yesterday. If that happens a couple of more times before the end of the season, they don't deserve a WC spot.
Looks like Stroman is joining the growing list of Yankees pitchers slated for long relief in blowout playoff games.
The mets can win all 3 game in Milwaukee actually have there spot guaranteed have to take a trip to atlana, and than fly out to play SDP the next day, not because it matter for the mets, but because it matter for the braves.
Wouldn't that be nice? And easy to manage. Mendoza pins a not on ottavino's locker on Monday morning telling him he's starting game 1 and going 5 innings minimum. And if his pitch count is under 80, he's starting game 2 as well.
There is no scenario where a Mets clinch before Sunday is bad news, except for a freak injury. And the way it's looking now, if the DH on Monday is meaningful, it's likely that the Mets will avoid facing Sale and Fried.
The Mets should roll the dice on the #3 WC slot, even if it means playing down to it.
This Braves/Mets double header action is a fan's dream! 2 games for the price of one. And with any luck, the #3 wildcard comes out of this mess and has to front up a position player to start game 1 of the WC series vs Milwaukee.
Right now, there's no joy in being the #2 WC team in the NL. The Padres are healthy and playing well; they should roll the Braves, Mets or Snakes in front of the home crowd. The #3 WC team has a better shot against the Brewers, much as it pains me to admit it.
Go easy. Your man was just trying to help a player in need.
“It was a big play,” Torres said. “I just tried to protect Soto, but I feel like I have to be a little more aggressive.
Well, you could do a lot worse than Iglesias and Acuna as fill-ins for Lindor. They've more than carried thier weight for the Mets since Lindor's injury. Mets have bigger problems than Lindor missing games. Maybe it's a Stearns thing, but I don't see the Mets as a pitching/defense playoff team. More of a regular season team. Like the Brewers. Mets line-up is solid until it disappears against a hot pitcher, which the Mets can't match with any authority and consistency.
Nor had the Rocket. Or Giambi. Or A-roid.
the good 'ol days when even your clubhouse guys were on steroids----
Lol. Does the word BALCO mean anything to you?
Casas uninjured for a full season might have been enough to snag a WC.
Marinaccio claimed off waivers by the White Sox...
Sounds like a classic comedy skit opener. His agent calls and says, 'I have some good news and bad news"
I think it's 4 minimum for the Royals if they want a shot at the playoffs. The Twins close with the Marlins and Orioles, who will be saving Burnes for game 1 of the WC series now that the division is out of reach.
KC has the Nats, who are falling apart, but then it's the Braves. If Atlanta is still in contention for a playoff berth, they'll be a tough opponent.
Here's my list of teams that are better than the Mets IMO:
Phillies, Dodgers, Padres, Brewers, Yankees, Guardians, Astros
These teams are close to on a par with the Mets this season:
Braves, Cubs, Snakes, O's, Royals, Twins
While their run has been impressive since their disastrous start, this Mets team has a below average rotation and a below average bullpen. I think this will show up quickly in the playoffs if not before. And as much as you like Alvarez, his D is weak. Not Gary Sanchez weak, but teams with a decent running game will take full advantage. As was pointed out on this board, it was a complete stroke of luck that the ball Alvarez threw into the 3rd base bag didn't result in a tie game. And had the Mets lost that game yesterday, I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune.
Better hope the Mets take the opener in Atlanta. A 3 game cushion with 5 to play should do it. Lose the first one and the screws tighten up considerably, even though the players try and pretend otherwise.
He's been serving up a lot of meatballs. Not sure how the crew will work the starting pitching in the playoffs, but there's not a single starter on the team with enough of a pedigree to warrant even a short leash.
Freddy starts game 1. If he can go 6, that's a great outing for him. Game 2 is completely up in the air. Rea has been getting hit hard in his last 4-5 starts.
Yup, some really ugly games in Milwaukee lately. Gotta hope they find some life within the next week because another opening round playoff loss would be very hard to accept for fans.
Great to hear you fear thre Brewers, lol! At this point, Milwaukee is looking at the WC series, so there's no way the Brewers will be playing the series with the Mets with a full commitment to winning. Whether it's tight pitch counts or regulars getting rest, you'll be facing a team at 50% of it's drive and capacity so I stand by my prediction that for the Mets, the Atlanta series is the season. And the Braves have KC for their final 3, so that's going to be a very competitive series for both teams, with high levels of motivation.
If you can't beat the Brewers 2 out of 3 with the season on the line in the final weekend, it's probably best you re-tool for next year.
Totally agree. Forget about the playoffs. And forget about the Phillies for now. The Mets season will be decided by the upcoming 3 games vs the Braves. Hopefully they'll only need 1 win to clinch, like in 2022.
As they say, "help yourself", "charity begins at home".
No doubt ottavino has to go. Should have happened weeks ago. You'd be better rolling the dice with Kimbrel for the last week of the season.
More to the point, and this is a big issue in Milwaukee as well, can the Mets hit quality pitching, because that's what the Phillies rotation will be bringing every game. And the other side of that issue is the quality, or lack therefore, of the Mets (and Brewers) rotations. Seve and who? In Milwaukee, it's hoping Freddy has a quality start, but then it's Civale? Montas? Rea?
The Brewers bullpen is excellent, which can't be said of the Mets, but a quality bullpen doesn't help much when you're down 4 runs in the 3rd. And unlike hitting, where an average player can find a streak of excellence, that's much less likely to happn with pitching IMO.
Marketing move of the season: great to see MLB spruiking their product by making the free game on MLB.com the White Sox!
Lighting up Walker is to be expected. I think Howie Rose said that the Phillie's 5th starters have an ERA north of 13.
Someone had to go in Baltimore and Kimbrel was an easy call. At least now Hyde won't be tempted if the O's need some late relief help in tight games, though Seranthony Dominguez is just as scary.
Brewers wrap up another division title! This one could be the sweetest, what with losing Burnes, Woodruff and Yelich. Hate to be greedy but the crew really needs to win a round or 4 in the playoffs for the season to be deemed a success IMO.
Robles left the game with a "sore wrist". Haha!
A 2 game WC lead for the Metropolitans after the Reds take down the Braves. Not a bad spot to be in. Those upcoming games in Atlanta will decide it IMO. Chance for the Mets to exorcise some 2022 demons when they needed a single win to take the divvy and couldn't find it in them.
Bobby Witt joins the 30/30 club. What a season! Witt and Salvy, youth and age, bookending a scrapped together line up which looks bound for October baseball. From a 2023 record of 56-106 to approval of a 2 billion $$+ stadium in one year should earn KC execs some front office awards this year!
Oakland could have used this blueprint about 7 years ago.
Acuna is green. Bound to be some errors and miscues early. Lest you forget, most of the Mets infield has had some amazin' brain freezes, especially earlier in the season. Acuna sure can hit though, so far. Thumping the Nationals at home in September is exactly what the Mets should be doing.
1 run now going on the last 21 innings. This is really pathethic to watch.
This isn't about Lindor, though losing him is big for the Mets. And there's no Phillies team to blame. Mets heavy hitters just haven't clicked consistently all season. Lindor was terrible in the beginning, Pete has not been clutch with RISP, Nimmo hit the wall for some weeks. McNeil was a waste of space for a while. None of these guys have had woeful seasons, but in some cases, their numbers suggest they've been more clutch than they actually have.
IMO, the turnaround in the Mets fortunes started when they started finding consistent ABs for Iglesias. He's been their most reliable hitter and does a much better job of possibly any other Mets hitter at keeping the line moving.
Of bigger concern for Mets fans is the bullpen IMO. There's not much "lockdown" security trotting in late in close games.
So given the uncertainty in the lineup and the pen, I think the Mets' manager has done a really good job this season, especially for a rookie. Who picked that guy anyway, LOL?
Hate to see Lindor, or any player, do down to injury, especially at this time of the year. I'd have to agree with you that it's looking pretty grim for the Mets right now. Hopefully they're still in contention when they play the 3 against the Braves. Brewers didn't help you much dropping a game they should have won in the desert.
Looking like a Phillies vs Astros 2022 redux to me, as much as I'd love to see the Brewers vs the Guardians.
After watching the condensed game, the Yankees need to remind Verdoggo that he's no Ricky Henderson rounding first base.
the dodgers who want to give no help what so ever is not good, and the way there going maybe the brewers catch them for the 2 spot.
After the Braves, the Dodgers have 3 with the Marlins and 6 with the Rockies in their last 12 games, so I'm not too optimistic about the #2 spot for the Crew.
And the mets plays the D-back head to head this year they beat them, they played the padres head to head they beat them.
The Mets are 42-40 against teams better than .500 this season, so I get why you're very concerned about the schedule if you're only playing .500 ball against decent teams. .500 down the stretch usually doesn't translate into October ball unless you've built some cushion to fall back on.
Let me say this again, they have the best record in baseball since may 30th
Oakland went 15-9 in July. The Cubs went 18-8 in August. So what? Sure, I agree 100% that if the season started on May 30th, the Mets record would be a marvel to behold, but unfortunately, when you start the seaon 24-33, 18-8 in September might very well not cut it.
Mets are in with a decent shot this year. They have control of their own destiny. After their horrendous start, what more could you ask for? I mean, you could already be gearing up for Knicks games.
Adames has definitely played himself out of the Brewers 2025 price range in his free agency year. 32 HRs and 107 RBIs to date....and a huge need in Chavez Ravine.....Hate to see him go....
Agreed. Haven't smelled that kind of fear since little league! I can't imagine Bob Gibson or Randy Johnson or even Hideki Irabu putting up 4 fingers in that situation. Nor can I think of a pitcher unilaterally making that decision with no input from the manager. Not even a friggin' mound visit. You gotta have some type of huge ego to do that. Ironic though that Cole's ego wasn't huge enough to believe he could win a battle with Devers.
Yanks are hanging in there, but the games have been tight lately.
Um, This season's NL Cy winner Sale putting up a good game is hardly the case of the Dodgers rolling over. And blowing a 4-0 lead is not the sign of a playoff team.
It's pretty simple: you win, you're in. You lose and you're counting on other teams to lose, you're lucky to be in. Brewers and Adames are helping you out in Arizona the last couple of games.
Once Cole signaled for the walk, Boone said he “didn’t want to get involved.”
The only thing worse than not taking managerial responsibilty for game decisions is throwing your ace under the bus. Hope for the Yanks sake that this doesn't snowball into a slump.
The way the Mets are playing I hope they inch into at least the 2nd wildcard spot. Brewers match up better with the snakes. Or Braves.
The Braves schedule might be easier than the Mets, but they've dealt with much worse injuries than the Mets this season. The players the Braves have lost don't even have comparables on the Mets, or just about every team in MLB, but they're still in with a great shot.
What's the point of October ball if you're afraid of the Phillies? At the end of the season, only one team will feel like they've had the season they hoped and trained for. To be that team, you need a chip on your shoulder, which the Mets are building. You need some fan swagger. I for one wouldn't want to face the Mets now.
Lindor was clutch, but credit has to be given to "my GM" whose vision for this team has them in September control of their own destiny. You want to win it all, you can't be afraid of the Mets, Phillies and Brewers.
Okay, maybe the Brewers.
Brewers drops 3 out of 4 to Colorado. In Milwaukee. I hope this late season funk has a chance to play itself out before the WC series begins. Fastball Freddy hasn't been sharp. And the loss of Yelich looms larger as the lack of a reasonable replacement bat magnifies the hole in the line up.
Cashman is a proven expert at deriding and undermining his players in the press. Players, especially young ones, remember quotes like this from their GM, and it crushes their confidence.
----with any other closer, the Yanks would have a 5-9 game lead in the division....
Kimbrel has certainly done for the O's what Holmes has done for the Yankees. Late inning incompetence has at least made for a fun division race down the stretch! With Kimbrel, it was pretty clear that he wasn't going to be "the man" before the Orioles signed him. That was a GM bungle which really put Brandon Hyde in a compromised position. Holmes will see action in October because Boone is no Bruce Bochy, the lone playoff manager whose instincts reign over analytics and stats. And the manager with the finest October pedigree in baseball today.
