I learned rather belatedly that for equity stops do not trigger during extended hours. I guess that means for equity holders after markets shut one is on one's own. How wonderful.I was in a standard lot ETF that overnight went against me by $ 7 K and the stop ONLY kicked in when the market opened. So what the buy and hold crowd and AIM players do to compensate for this risk. Hmmm I wonder how many know of the risk they carry. It is concentrate on futures for me from now on.
Forgive my ignorance. How do you protect your overnight ( long term ) equity positions from catastrophic negative price changes
Does anyone ue RENKO bar charts for their AIM trading / investing and if so to what results. Tradingview has implemented Renko on their platform. I have been trialing it out on futures market with various management styles
Does ANYONE or is anyone using AIM and investing in leveraged ETF's and to what result's.
To RENKO Stockchart users.
I do not yet use Stockcharts. So my querie is In Stockcharts, in setting up a scan can one specify the type of Chart against which to run the scan. i.e. run the scan for stocastic setups but the stoc. is drawn using Renko data ? Thanks for your reply.
Will back testing ability be included in the new improved version ?
So it would appear that AIM provides almost the same perfomance as B & H but at a lower risk. No 20% p.a. advantage.
Is there a management system that beats the S&P as that is the oft stated standard?
Thanks for your revealing posting. The beauty of programs like AI that support backtesting is that they unemotionally support or debunk a methodology. There are many a management systems that sound logical and appear to be the acceptable Holy Grail in investing but it is only by proper backtesting that they can be confirmed or debunked.
Could you be more specific and post your various results so as to enlighten us all. There appear to be many AIM followers but I do not remember seeing any systematic analysis of item by item ie. etf's etc. ( no stocks as stocks depend very much on choice ).
AIM is a stock management program and daily, monthly, yearly are just data points. If it is doing it's job then it should be able handle any and in theory all the way down to even 1 minute data points. I suspect that many have accepted the logic of AIM without doing any rigorous backtesting. AIM might not hand you a loss but is it as good a management system as it could/should/would be ?
Tom, Thank you for your prompt and detailed reply. After reading some value oriented books i.e. Rule #1 and Buffettology is seemed to me that using this methodology for stock picking and then using AIM to manage them "might" be the way to go. VL's 1-5 filtered stocks appear to do the same but is seems that it does not include the concept of moats as an additional filter.
People seem to have shyed away from stocks after the crash and burn of some high profile stocks over the last few years. Question is would these stocks have even passed either the VL or Buffett filters. I have my doubts.
I wonder if the use TA indicators to support, reinforce, filter AIM buy/sell signals would help or hinder AIM results.
Have you checked out VSS software from Mark Hing to select stock candidates ? Do you still invest in stocks or have you moved over entirely to ETF's.
Thanks.
Hi Tom, I see that this strategy came to an abrupt end in 2007. Was it not fruitful and worth persuing ?
Hi Mark, Thank you for your reply. As I mentioned on the AIM board, I have nothing against a good tool that would help and simplify my investing, especially one where the developer has incrementally improved it over the years. Though free may be a very good thing it may not be very convinient.
At the same time I am reluctant to invest in partially overlapping
tools so was hoping that AI did just as good a value search similar to VSS. You are correct though on how I was envisioning using AI. Buying put and call leaps could be a profitable strategy dependant upon % of correct stock forcasts. Wish there were longer than 2 year leaps.
When I finish my present stack of books (4) I intend to purchase your PI book to see what your PI software is all about.
You mentioned that you were going to upgrade AI with VSS algrothems. I would have waited for that but the track history is not too good.
That is a pity. I was thinking of using fundamentals to find stocks and the AIMing them. AI then would fit the bill. Does VSS?I am sure you have done so, how has it worked out for you and what have you used.
Hi Mark, Could you confirm my understanding that AI does a value stock search of the fundermental data base. If so does it use the same methodology and display of results as VSS.
Thanks.
Intresting. Since posting my initial querie concerning the AIMing of Buffettology stocks, my personnel impression from reading the numerious replies is, unless I have missed any
1.there are numerous opinions on the performance of Buffett stocks but nobody has tried them. Just opinions of hearsay.
2.Discussions of Bufett type way of stockpicking. That without trying out Buffett.
3. References to tools that no one has used, again hearsay. I personally do not hesitate to invest in tools, in my work life, where reviews state would increase my profitability. If someone has built a tool and incrementally improved and enhanced it, with futher acquired knowledge, over the years, then buying it would be in my view a win win situation.
4. It appears that there is a concious movement away from stocks ( I guess after crash and burn stocks like Enron ) I can understand the reason why, but would a Buffett like examination of the books have made a difference? If anyone thinks that the books of emerging countries and their companies are anything other than fiction then you have a surprise comming. All their books are made to order. So what happens to emerging country ETF.
Just my reading of the posts and conclusions.
Hi Karw, Do you own and have you used Aptus's program to select stocks and have you then AIMed them with what results ?
Hi Adam, I would not know about the money part of it but I suspect that the books only paint us a third or the picture. I feel that the entire picture is a lot more complex and involves a lot more than just stocks. I feel certain that despite his homely demenor he is a lot more devious and will not let the entire cat out of the bag.
But using Mr. Hing's value software to find appropriate stocks and then letting AI manage them, one might get acceptable results. X_Dev might be another way to go. How about using leaps.
Has anyone done any such thing.
No, choosing stocks like he does to the best of our knowledge.
Has anyone tried AIMing Buffettology stocks ( not cigar butt )and getting out of them when their fundermentals no longer add up. If yes, how did it work out for you.
Though I have that book on hold, reviewing the user reviews on amazon they are not entirely positive. Anyway, now knowing how Buffett evaluates ( or do we really )and their results, any accountant should be able to indicate the relevant entries on a balance sheet. I gather that the dummy series have a couple of good books on this topic. I agree that using modern tools ( computers, software, internet for data ) makes the process easy. Program in all the important factors, give them the appropriate weighings (add a lot of patience ) and viola you get a slimmed down list to invest in with a very high degree of success.
MOS gives an max. entry value. Maybe good TA might help with a good entry point. Trouble with most TA indicators is that they take only price into account or only volume. Do you know any that give a value that is the resultant of both ?
AAI = AI
Do you suscribe to AAII
I just finished reading rule 1 and your report. More than a few minor differences wouldn't you say. You both start/quote Buffett and his way to evaluate companies but use different inputs. Since i am not an accountant nor a financial analyst I would not know which, if both are correct. I have seen the inputs and reasons Phil chooses them. How and why did you get around to making your choices. Guess I should read how the Oracle does it. Got a few books at the library on request.
I presume that your software ( VSS ) does a scan of all stocks in Yahoo/MSN?value Line ?? data base and provides a list of stocks that meet the criteria.
Even with a MOS Phil uses TA to validate entry/exit moments. I can see the logic of that. A Value/fundermental/TA approach. Can one use AAI for such a management purpose ?
Will post more questions as they present themselves. Thank you for all your replies much appreciated.
Rule #1 is a book by Phil Town about his method of choosing stocks. Go to amazon and do a search for Phil Town and read the reviews. I got the book from my local library. Well worth a read.
Hope this helps. Post your comments after you have read it. Thanks.
Seesh, this is a restrictive site. Won't even let me send a PM. Way better at forexfactory.
So Scarlet what is the best way to send you a pm or an email.
Thanks.
Hey Scarlet, me being a bush meat eater could you list
1. The procedure for posting ( attaching ) charts with one's postings. Is this a privilage only for the paid up crowd.
2. Have you tried your " system " on a Renko chart. Would it improve the quality of the signals etc.? I could try to post a Renko chart from my forex platform if I knew how to attach it here.
3. rule 1. google it for info.
Thanks.
I went to your PI site. There it states that PI is not for sale till 2011. Confused. Nice babe though.
Mark, When did you start selling PI software.
Hey Misty, glad to see that you have got yourself to post here on a regular basis again. I haven't visited this forum for awhile thinking that I was flogging a Scarlet's dead horse. So I have to ask
1. Have you got X_Dev working again. If so did you do the fix or is Song back on board on a regular basis or ??
2. I see that you worked on the header of this forum. Does the mean that you have restarted sales of X_Dev ?
3. Have you read Rule # 1. If yes have you tried to implement it in conjunction with X_Dev and with what outcomes ?
Hear from you and keep up your new outlook of regular postings.
Hello Mark, Does your Value Stock Selector encompass the ideas from Rule #1 . Thanks
Myst, read msg 8367 for Song's opinion on trading and this program.
Visitors and past customers who will read these exchanges can make up their own mind as to intent and purpose. Some solutions to the very simple problem have been offered but none taken. All the while you have played he part of the Scarlet Pimpernel.
Oh Myst get real. Yong,
1. Does not trade
2. Is no longer interested in this program
3. Has moved on to bigger and in his opinion better things.
4. Has never posted on this forum which also states that he is not interested and could not care less what you do or who else you get to maintain this program.
So think of it this other way, you are not replacing Yong. You are just getting temporary help while he is overwhelmed with his present duties. Yong's place on the boardroom chair will remain empty awaiting his return from his sabbatical.
Hello Arawat, By now it is abundantly clear the Mysti dearest has no intention of doing anything anymore. His postings are akin to an angler playing with a hooked fish. Must be some sort of turn on for him.
On the AIM board at this site is another program called Advanced Automatic Investor. It too is a Lichello based, well written and well regarder program. It has many other "improvements "included. These improvements being AIM followers suggestions. Do you want to guess that the deviation bands are included. I hear that the support is also pretty good. Coupling that with AAII studies should yeald good returns.
Very few people now seem to post or visit this board. Most must have given up in disgust unable to anymore trade with their software. Try the Advanced Automatic Investor. Good luck.
Hello Toofuzzy, AIM is weighed towards a systemic bull market, higher higs and higher lows-pullbacks. I beleive we are at present in a systemic bear market. The cycle will change but what about in the meantime. Could be some years ro recovery.
Whichever good authority you listened to is using the word authority frivilously.
Hello Myst, welcome back to your board. Please don't feel shy about revisiting as you are the sole contact to this program. By your absence you have left your devoted users is a state of flux and uncertainty. Leave you to resolve that with yourself.
Now about your lack of programming knowledge. May I suggest paying a visit to Elance. This site is one of the meeting places ( there are many others in todays web ) where one can hire contract programmers. You specify your project, requirements etc. and umpteen programmers will bid on it.I have used them in the past and have found them very satisfactory.
Though we all admire your loyalty to Yong, it is not fair to your customers to leave them in limbo. Also maintaining the line of communication via your posting here and voicing your problems would help greatly. I have given you my idea on resolving the data issue. Maybe others here can offer you some of theirs. But you maintaining communication is vital to this project.
Hear from you. Thanks.
Hello Kingpindg.
This is all very strange. Well he is still alive. But he seems to have discontinued the use of X-Dev as his latest charts show no mention of it. He has also deserted this forum and it seems one can forget about support. What strange behavior and actions. Makes him appear a wee bit unstable. Do you think he lost his shirt in the last market collaspe.
He, it appears, is still selling his now broken program. You make your own deductions. Everyone is now left hanging unable to use a software that they paid for and came to rely upon. I wonder if Advanced Automatic Investor program has a version of xdev incorporated into his program. It seems to have everything else.
Then again people have purchased xdev and crutial software support has been discontinued maybe the program could be decompiled. Wonder what language it was written in. Got to find a hacker. Maybe there is a site where hackers meet. They might do it for fun.
Thanks.
Hello Mark,
Do you listen to Consuelo Mack. If not check out her latest interview with David Rosenberg - a canadian - at wealthtrac.com. A very interresting video. How does his views jibe with your reading of the markets ( US ) and with what your software is telling you.
Personally I think that he spot on in his comments. But within AIM does it matter. How does a secular bear market or a flat market affect Aiming.
Thanks.
Hello Mark,
I would like to direct you to a site where you will see how he makes use of video to explain concepts. Very low tech. but very effective. It is www.khanacademy.org a pretty rmarkable site and effort on his part. Maybe it could provide some useful ideas.
How is the programming of PI progressing. Now I am being nosey, are you a full time investor/trader or is programming your day job. How did you fare this past decade. Keep up the good work.
Thanks.
Hello Roy,
What was your experience with using X_Dev. Do you have a record of your statistics ie w/l, yeald etc. I tried is many years ago during my less enlightened years in the market and did not give it the screen time I should have. As you can imagin my success was limited.
Hello Roy,
I gather that you must have had a disk crash. If you still have your drive, then there are specialist that can retrive the information for you.
If Yong can be got hold of then he might be able to reveal the source code since Myst has gone AWOL or is no longer available.
If that is a no go then a posting on Elance for a decompiler might produce someone who will take on the project for a fee. There has got to be more than one way to skin this cat.
Hello Roy,
Thanks for your reply. This gets curiousor and curiousor.
Firstly, if i am not mistaken I do not recollect Yong posting to this board. I have been off it for many years so I may have missed them. Song Yong - must be Korean - would no longer be remotely interested in maintaining this software because
1. He has progressed on in his high powered job
2. He is not into investing or trading. Though with the collaspe of his 401K I feel sure he is doing a drastic rethink. So maybe he will come back to this software or he has found a even better system.
3. He is no loger being paid to keep this system alive.
Russell on the other hand has has made a lot of money with this software or maybe someother and become a big cheese. He is no longer interested in maintaining and supporting this software for it does entail constant attention to " Hey Myst ". If this be the case then being a man of integrety that he is he should at the very least post the source code to this software so that his dependent customers have the means to rectify future problems for themselves. Then everyone can get on and make more money. So hopefully Russell will reveal the source code.
The main problem appears to be a yahoo data feed one. Why anyone relies on this unstable data - constantly changing theis format- I will never know. There are more stable data available. If there are other problems after this software being up and running this many years then it must be badly designed and programmed.
Thanks.
Hello Roy,
So the question arises. Why is it so difficult to either get hold of Russell or for him to reply. I see no reason for one to have umpteen email addresses. There is a site called Elance where one can hire programmers for $ 10 ph but principally by project to maintain, modify etc. existing programs. Do you know if Song or Russell use this program ?
