She should seek out an alternative physician to see what her problem is, it could be anything. No, you don't need a prescription for DHEA, I take it on a dly. basis and have noticed an improvement (2.5mg). You can purchase it at a health food/herbal shop or a pharmacy.
All of these physicians are trained to use alternative therapies; one should be in your area. I live in, IN. and travel to,IL. they get to the problem and don't treat symptoms like an orthodox physician does.

Sounds like my Girlfriend
If you or someone you know has fatigue, concentration difficulties, low blood sugar, achiness, allergies, whole body inflammation (chronic pain), or trouble getting out of bed in the morning
Her aunt, who is Very active and alert, recommended Siberian ginseng and Kelp tablets. I think that her doctor was recommending Iron tablets but her aunt said too much iron is not good for Asian metabolisms. I have heard about DHEA but do not know much about it. Does it need to be doctor recommended and are there any problems with just taking some anyway to see if it will help?

What is Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome?
Fatigue, PMS, Headache, Mood & Memory Problems, Weight Gain with Decreased Appetite, Skin-Hair-Nail Problems, Fluid Retention, Skin Eruptions...
Bob Filice, M.D.
Dennis Wilson, MD believes that the majority of patients with the symptoms of an underactive thyroid are not in fact under producing thyroid hormone as a result of glandular dysfunction in the thyroid gland. Instead, he postulates that there is a block in the conversion of the less active to the more active form of thyroid hormone (T4 to T3), and/or competitive inhibition of the action of T3 on body cells because of elevated levels of it's inactive mirror image, reverse T3.
It is very common for this to occur rather suddenly, and for the many symptoms of sluggish thyroid function (fatigue, dry skin, constipation, muscle aches, temperature intolerance, low body temperature, poor memory and concentration) to begin all at once.
Triggering factors can be pregnancy, stress, and excessive production of estrogen and deficiency of progesterone.
Clinically we see many patients who respond relatively well to thyroid replacement, yet I noticed how infrequently underarm temps would improve.
Before Wilson's, I used to bypass that observation as long as the patient was getting decent results from armour thyroid replacement therapy. After reading his original book nearly 10 years ago, this ignored observation became a clue that Wilson was on to something. His claim to fame is that T3 therapy does get the body temperature up, so that all body enzyme systems function optimally. He believes the low temperature is not just a sign of trouble, it is actually the cause of the patients symptoms.
Why? The answer is the body works well when all enzyme systems are functioning optimally. They can only operate efficiently over a very narrow range of temperature. Low body temp due to thyroid system dysfunction causes enzyme inefficiencies, and the entire human organism can suffer as a result.
Suggested treatment is first to wean individual who are taking all other thyroid medications off their meds, and to attempt to create a 10 day thyroid free interval. T3 can be used temporarily tide people over any uncomfortable symptoms that may occur during this weaning process.
The sustained release T3 medication is prescribed on a twice a day basis, and the dose is gradually increased while body temperature is monitored 3 times daily every day. It may take a considerable amount of T3 to get the temperature to normalize. The maximum allowable dose of T3 is 90 micrograms twice daily. When it does (or when the maximum dose is reached), the process is reversed and the dose of T3 is gradually reduced. This cycle is repeated as many times as necessary in an effort to reset the system. Theoretically a time will come when the temperature normalizes on a lower dose, maintains itself steadily for a week, and stays up during the gradual dose reduction all the way through to no medication at all. This is caleed "caturing" the normal temp. It is a sign that reverse T3 and T4 levels have been depleted, and now the thyroid is again reproducing T4, normally converting it to T3, and not overproducing reverse T3. Theoretically this "reset" allows the patient to enjoy substantial, sometimes dramatic relief of symptoms through restoration of normal body temperature.
Bottom line: Think Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome in a "hypothyroid" patient on replacement who continues to have symptoms and low temps, and in patients who develop a wide spectrum of thyroid related symptoms with fairly sudden onset. Remember, you may have all the classic symptoms of a sluggish thyroid, and even be on thyroid replacement therapy, and STILL have a problem with the thyroid system that can only be corrected by proper T3 therapy

PROPER ADRENAL FUNCTION...
KEY TO HEALTH AND ENERGY
Ross A. Hauser, M.D.
In alternative health circles, there are many articles on the thyroid gland. If a person takes their temperature when they first get out of bed and it is below 97.6 degrees, they are thought to have hypothyroidism. More commonly at Caring Medical, we find that people with low basal body temperatures suffer from adrenal insufficiency.
To appropriately test for low thyroid or adrenal function it is necessary to check the amount of free hormones in the body (not bound by proteins). In the thyroid, we check this with blood and for the adrenal gland hormones we check it in saliva.
A common case study would be the following:
A patient came in because she had a low temperature and wanted to get started on some thyroid medication. Her basal body temperatures varied from 96.8 to 97.2. Her symptoms included fatigue, losing hair, chronic pain, overweight, constipation, memory difficulties. She was tested and her thyroid tests were within normal limits but her adrenal gland salivary tests showed low cortisol and DHEA. She was started on DHEA and cortisol. After six weeks she was reassessed and stated that her energy was 40% improved, and that she had lost five pounds. Her DHEA dose was increased. After two months she had lost another 7 pounds and her energy continued to improve. She was eventually started on an exercise program. She was last seen in follow up about six months ago and feeling great. In total she has lost 25 pounds, but more importantly her memory is clear, she has hope for future and her energy level is better than it was 10 years ago.
In a study published in The CFS Research Review in December 2003, researchers found that corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH -- the hormone that stimulates the adrenal gland) caused an increase in an inflammatory hormone called IL-6 (interleukin-6) in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. Normally CRH will stimulate the adrenal gland to secrete cortisol which is anti-inflammatory, in part, by reducing IL-6 levels. This does not happen in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome because they often have adrenal insufficiency. Chronic fatigue results from insufficient adrenal gland hormones.
The adrenal gland hormone cortisol has many bodily functions including:
Helping with energy production
Helping with heat production
Mobilizing immune cells
Decreasing inflammation
Controlling allergic reactions
Raising blood sugars
Waking you up in the morning
Stimulating thoughts
If you or someone you know has fatigue, concentration difficulties, low blood sugar, achiness, allergies, whole body inflammation (chronic pain), or trouble getting out of bed in the morning, most likely they have adrenal insufficiency. They need to see a natural medicine physician and have adrenal hormone testing. To treat adrenal insufficiency, sometimes hormones are prescribed or herbal remedies are tried. Herbal supplements we use at Caring Medical include:
Adrene LN Support
Ginseng Panax
Ashwaghanda

Sounds Good Gary!
A lot of the time I don't eat any breakfast, just 2-3 cups of coffee. Now that it is getting cooler I go between a big bowl of honey oats cereal or 2-3 eggs and some ham. I usually save any big breakfast for the weekend when Tess and I might hit JBs for the breakfast buffet. Then it is no holds barred with eggs, sausage, bacon, peppers, biscuits and gravy, 'freedom' toast and whatever else I feel like having. Today was a bowl of cereal, plate of ham and a bowl of turkey soup I am still working on for lunch, and of course lot's of coffee w/sugar and milk. What hurts me the most, I think, is not really having any kind of exercise routine. I rarely even go for walks. I have no idea where my cholesterol level is although the last doctors visit, a year ago, he said that it was high and I should cut back on coffee and fatty foods. Your breakfasts sound Good to me although I don't think I could eat that much everyday. I think it all depends on your metabolism, which I am not expert in, as Tess's aunt says that Asian's have different metabolisms than others, so Tess can eat the same things I do but gain weight where I do not. I look forward to any followups you might have on the Atkins diet and how it has helped you.
Enjoy the Day Gary! :^)

BB...HARR!!! So could I, my becoming obese was not by accident, I ate my way into hell!
Thanks BB! I just gained 50 pounds back over my stay in the chair recently, it's my fault, but I think I need to take the kitchen away from my wife, she's quite famous in my family and in my circle friends for un-deniable cooking, Yum, Yum!
I'm still down 250+ in weight, however I have another 150-200 pounds to go, that's right, I was once 700 pounds. “But I’m Doing Much Better Now” HARR!!! BTW, that is a quote from John Aston on Night Court.

Best Wishes For The New Board!!!
If I were not so freaking busy I would love to hang here, for I lost 300 pounds on the hi protein & low carb' diet of Dr. Atkins.
I have did this after going on a doctor prescribed low fat diet on which I lost a hundred pounds, became a diabetic and gained back the 100 pounds and almost another hundred more!
I have a lot of recipes and tips for the Atkins’ diet. BTW, I don't care what book you follow, Atkin's was first over 30 years ago, but the medical profession said he was wrong and said it kill people, BULLCHITT!!!! They squashed him but his Truth won in the end.
OBTW, my cholesterol is a mere 202, Low Fat Kills!!!!!!!!
Weight Watchers is all right, But Atkins Saved My Life!!! JMHO!!!
Gary
The Model breakfast
To start you will need one piece of plain white bread. Take this piece of bread and put it either in a toaster, an oven or directly on the burner of your stove. Heat it until the surface becomes slightly brown, referred to as 'toasted'. Why a toaster is called a toaster, it makes 'toasted' bread. You are now ready to consume your 'Model' breakfast and enjoy your day. If you hear grumbling sounds coming from your stomach throughout the day just think of it as your body telling you 'Thank you'. Later we will discuss a Model lunch and dinner. Two things that are Optional to your daily food intake as Everyone knows that with a proper breakfast you can make it through the day.
Enjoy the Day Everyone! :^)
I've had to many of them all ready......but anything is welcome!
Need a couple of assistants....please step forward!
