Demo Plant
Building on the success of the Pilot Plant, Vulcan’s Demo Plant is progressing well. The Demo Plant will
consist of two parts: the DLE plant and the lithium hydroxide production plant. Importantly, technical
and operations personnel will train in the plant to develop a comprehensive understanding of the process
and its operation prior to construction of the first commercial plant, planned for 2024.
DLE Demo Plant
The DLE Demo Plant is a priority for the lithium team and will be installed and operated at an existing
geothermal plant. A team of around 15 engineers and technicians have now finalised the design work and
the pre-fabrication of the plant started in February 2022, offsite in Germany. Designed to produce
15 to 20 kg/h of concentrated LiCl solution from 5000 to 6000 l/h of geothermal brine, the Demo Plant
will provide important operational learnings prior to Vulcan’s planned start of commercial production in
2024. More than 80%of the equipment has been ordered and commissioning start is on track for mid2022. The DLE Demo Plant will represent an approximately 1:200 scale of the first commercial plant.
Once operational, the plant will employ more than 20 people, with the Company committed to prioritising
local jobs in the Upper Rhine Valley region.

Successful #Wärmewende means #Umweltschutz and independence from foreign gas and oil reserves. Deep geothermal energy is an important part of a supply from renewable energies. However, since not every region is suitable for #Geothermie, the energy should be generated as efficiently as possible.
For this reason, researchers at the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft are investigating rocks at a depth of 400 to 5,000 metres. The work in the underground GeoLab will be part of a roadmap that will contain five recommendations for the expansion of geothermal energy.

As our managing director Horst Kreuter recently said: "In the current time, the search for a plan B is many things, but one thing in particular: there is no alternative!" For this reason, it is important that appropriate measures are already required today and that developments are initiated in order to support a climate-friendly and domestic supply of #Erneuerbaren.
#Geothermie can make its contribution and cover a considerable part of the heat supply in Germany with a strengthened, nationwide expansion.

The acquisition also includes 100% ownership of the Insheim
production licence surrounding the Insheim Plant. Following an
MoU signed in November 2019, Vulcan had already completed the
Maiden Indicated Lithium-Brine Mineral Resource Estimation at
the Insheim license in January 2020, reporting an Indicated
Mineral Resource of 722,000 t of contained Lithium Carbonate
Equivalent (LCE), with a lithium brine grade of 181 mg/l Li2
.
• The Insheim Plant currently pumps lithium-rich brine to the
surface for geothermal energy generation before the brine is
reinjected into the reservoir.
• Vulcan will formally take over the plant from 1 January 2022 and
will retain all existing local employees as part of the transition.
Vulcan also plans to invest in the expansion and modernisation of
the power plant.
There’s plenty of room for expansion; to date, Vulcan Energy is using just one-fifteenth of the lithium resource present in the two licenses it is working on, with six licenses still untouched. Automaker Volkswagen has the right of first refusal to invest in any additional capacity the company builds out in future phase expansions.
The company doesn’t plan to license its technology to third parties, although it has various partnerships with companies through its existing production chain, including Nobian and DuPont.

Landau geothermal plant brine offtake agreement
• In addition to the acquisition of Insheim, Vulcan Energy has executed a 20-year brine offtake
agreement with geox GmbH, the operational Landau geothermal renewable energy plant in the
Upper Rhine Valley owned by the IKAV Group, a Luxembourg-based renewable energy fund
manager and operator.
• Under the terms of the agreement, Vulcan has the right to purchase and extract the lithium from
the brine produced from Landau, and return it to the plant for re-injection, with expected brine
volume from the production well of at least 100 l/s, subject to the financing and drilling of a reinjection well which can accommodate the current production well flow, and with an offtake
start date of 30 December 2024.
• The existing production well at Landau has the tested ability to produce at a rate of over 100 l/s,
but an additional re-injection well is planned to help accommodate this flow.
• In addition, subject to obtaining the relevant permissions from the authorities, the Landau plant
will provide access to accommodate Vulcan’s demonstration lithium extraction plant, with a
target start-up date of Q2 2022. Vulcan has been successfully operating its first lithium extraction
pilot plant at Landau since April 2021. Lithium grades in the brine from Landau well GTLA-1 are
approximately 180 mg/l Li (Sanjuan et al, 2016). Vulcan will seek, subject to positive feasibility
studies, to incorporate this offtake agreement into its Phase 1 development plans
Vulcan subsidiaries GeoThermal

Vulcan’s Managing Director Dr. Francis Wedin commented: “the acquisition of the Insheim Plant is
consistent with Vulcan’s strategy to acquire and upgrade existing brownfield renewable energy and brine
infrastructure and to de-risk and grow our Zero Carbon Lithium? Project. Funded with a portion of the
proceeds from our recent $200 million capital raising, which was strongly supported by existing and new
institutional investors, the acquisition demonstrates our willingness and ability to capitalise on strategic

1. Insheim renewable energy plant acquisition
• Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd. (Vulcan, the Company, ASX: VUL),
has agreed to acquire an operational geothermal renewable
energy power plant in the Upper Rhine Valley at Insheim,
Germany (the "Insheim Plant"), through the acquisition of 100% of
the shares in the entity which owns and operates the plant. A new
Germany subsidiary of Vulcan, based in Karlsruhe, will be the
owner and operator of the Insheim Plant.
• Purchased for approximately €31.5 million, utilising a portion of
proceeds from the recent A$200 million capital raise, the
acquisition of the Insheim Plant establishes Vulcan as an
operational renewable energy business.
• Owned by regional energy supplier Pfalzwerke AG, the plant
currently has the technical ability to produce a maximum of
4.8MW renewable power, equivalent to approximately 8,000

Changing chemistry
Battery chemistries are starting to adopt a more regional approach, Ledoux-Pedailles noted.
China, for instance, is dominated by lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which are lithium carbonate and not as high performing as lithium nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries, he said.
“One of the biggest threats to electric vehicles is that drivers are scared about the range they can achieve; they need reassurance they can go a longer distance. This requires NCM chemistries, which use lithium hydroxide,” he added.
Vulcan Energy’s off-takers have asked for lithium hydroxide for NCM-type cathodes, Ledoux-Pedailles told Fastmarkets.
“We can produce both hydroxide and carbonate, and we did have some requests for lithium carbonate for cheaper vehicles with a lower driving range. Battery chemistries will keep evolving, and you’ll see an evolution per region as opposed to pan-industry,” he said.
The company could also switch to producing solid-state, lithium metal batteries if they become popular in time, given the primary feedstock is the lithium chloride it will produce in the process.
“If we want to consider solid-state batteries later, we can,” Ledoux-Pedailles said.
